What Punctuation Will You Put on This Year?
I
don’t know about you, but and 60 percent of men and 25 percent of women chose the this year flew by. I feel like I looked up after summer electric shock. Let’s be brave and it was Thanksgiving, and and reflect on the year! now here we are at year’s end. As the sun sets on the end of this year — and if you haven’t taken the time to go look Let’s all start with curiosity and ask ourselves: What have at our winter sunsets, add that to your list of things to we learned this year? Maybe a do! — it’s time to not just put new hobby (I took up picklea period on the experience, ball!), or how to cook someby Sara Caputo but to also add a question thing new or play an instrument. Maybe you figured mark and an exclamation point! out how to stop doing some things that Reflecting on the ups and downs that weren’t working for you. We could all use have come our way is a natural process a start-doing and stop-doing list. and a fantastic growth opportunity. I’m not a natural reflector, as I’m more of a move-forward kind of girl, but I do find the process of reflecting on the past year Time to celebrate! All of us have things to interesting and revealing as we get near be grateful for. Some of us may have to dig the end. It’s nice to know that I am not deeper than others, but I truly believe that alone in my resistance to reflection. Jay if we focus on what’s right in the world, Shetty, author of Think Like a Monk spoke we will get more of that, and research in his podcast about a recent study where proves it to be true. In the book Gratitude people were given the choice of 15 min- Works! by Robert Emmons, “People are utes of reflection or an electric shock, 25 percent happier if they keep gratitude

journals and sleep just 30 minutes longer each evening and exercise 33 percent more each week.” Dig in and figure out what you are grateful for, and then repeat that every week. Be grateful for the lessons, the laughter, the tears, and the growth. The experiences of the past have sculpted a more nuanced, resilient, and compassionate version of oneself.
The Period. A period, also known as a full stop, indicates that a sentence is complete. Earlier this year, I started following Emily Freeman, the Soul Minimalist, who has a practice of reflecting every 90 days on lessons learned. Her blog is filled with entries of what she learned this spring, fall, and winter for years and years. My biggest takeaway — life is filled with moments that when truly reflected on offer us insight and knowledge. Life can be filled with regret — but that’s about the past. It can be filled with anxiety — but that’s about the future. Or it can be filled with gifts when we stay in the
present and reflect on the here and now. Of course, in the moments of challenge, the true colors of character emerge, and the depth of one’s spirit is revealed. But if we add a C to “reactive” we can be Creative, and realize that with every Change, there is a Chance (Just change the “g” to a “c”)! So, as we turn to the final page of this chapter, let gratitude be the ink that shapes the memories. May the echoes of its lessons reverberate in the soul, and may the next chapter unfold with the grace of a well-told story. Here’s to the journey — the highs, the lows, and the beautiful mess that is life. Cheers to embracing the punctuation, for every period, question mark, and exclamation point is a prelude to a new beginning.

Adam’s Angels Hosts Holiday Events for Hundreds of Homeless Guests
Co-Founder and Board Treasurer Melissa Borders, Santa, and Co-Founder and President Adam McKaig at 2022 Christmas event
Montecito or are unsheltered, Borders related, they expect continued large numbers. When asked what motivates them to put in the long hours to plan, prepare, and host these events year after year, McKaig shared that the people they have gotten to know, both the homeless guests and the volunteers, have become his family. “I love my family and I want to keep nurturing and taking care of them for as long as I can.” In the morning before the event starts, when McKaig sees the line of guests stretching for blocks, he thinks, “Wow, we have done it,” and Borders added, “and we want to do it again.” Every day, McKaig reflects, “We wake up and ask what more can we do to help.” When they hosted the first holiday events in 2020, the first year of the pandemic, the intent was that these were one-time events. But the experiences turned out to be so exhilarating, Borders related, that they wanted to keep doing it and to make it better each year. The gratitude from the hundreds of homeless guests and volunteers in a single day, Borders shared, gives one “a feeling you just want to keep having.” For the Christmas meal, the nonprofit is seeking cookies from the community, which can be dropped off at the Veterans’ Memorial Building December 21 or 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or on Christmas Day from 10 a.m. to noon. Monetary donations, of course, are welcome year-round. Adam’s Angels has no paid staff and receives no government funding or private grants. It relies on the community for donations. The
O
nce again, this year the nonprofit Adam’s Angels will brighten the Christmas holiday for hundreds of homeless guests with a festive event that includes a nourishing meal, live musical entertainment, gifts from Santa, a free marketplace of clothing and gear, and a warm, welcoming spirit. Led by real estate agents Adam McKaig and Melissa Borders, Adam’s Angels serves homeless individuals year-round. The all-volunteer nonprofit was formed in the early days of the pandemic and just keeps on serving. The entertainment for this year’s Christmas event is under wraps, but last year Kenny Loggins and Jackson Gillies gave heartwarming performances of Christmas songs, and in the past couple of years, Alan Parsons, Lois Mahalia, Jason Libs, and many more have performed. The event, at the Santa Barbara Veterans’ Memorial Building on Christmas Day from noon to 2 p.m., is open to anyone in the community. This year’s Thanksgiving event, also at the Veterans’ Memorial Building, was quite the production, with about 500 guests and 132 volunteers preparing and serving the meal. Some volunteers who weren’t on duty that day and didn’t have family in the area came as guests. According to Borders, the holiday events are just as much for the volunteers as anyone else. “It was really nice to serve them,” Borders added. Homeless guests enjoyed shopping at the pop-up shop on-site, which featured racks of new clothing donated by Deckers, including fleece tops, hoodies, Hoka and Teva footwear, and UGG wool-lined leather gloves, hats, socks, and backpacks. For Christmas, Adam’s Angels is expecting a similar number of guests. Now that word has gotten out that the event is open to everyone, whether they live in

REAL ESTATE SCOOP KELLY KNIGHT WINS HOWARD GATES AND COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS
S
anta Barbara real estate broker Kelly Knight recently received two prestigious awards from the Santa Barbara Association of Realtors. A licensed real estate broker since 2005 and the founder of Knight Real Estate Group, an affiliate of Village Properties, Knight received the Howard Gates Award for the most “challenging and intricate transaction” of 2023, as defined by the association’s awards committee. The transaction involved the sale of a property gifted to the nonprofit Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara (SFSB), the nation’s largest community-based provider of college scholarships. The association stated that the sale demanded “exceptional perseverance, determination, diligence, patience, and expertise”. Knight, an SFSB governing board member since 2017, also received the association’s Realtor Community Service Award for her philanthropic and volunteer work serving the Santa Barbara community. Knight lends her time, expertise, and financial resources to SFSB, and her real estate team at Knight Real Estate Group contributes regularly to the Village Properties Teacher’s Fund campaign and many other local non-profit organizations. “My education and legal background have given me much throughout my life, personally and professionally,” Knight said in a statement. “I believe it’s a fundamental responsibility – as well as my greatest joy – to give back to our beautiful community.” The sale that won Knight the Howard Gates Award involved a piece of land that was partially gifted to SFSB 24 years ago and had 9 additional owners, some of whom had passed and left shares of the property to adult children. The gift to SFSB was intended to help the foundation fulfill its mission of awarding college scholarships to low-income students. But the complexity of trying to
sell the property made it difficult for the foundation to move forward. As a former lawyer, Knight has expertise in dealing with the nuances of complex real estate contracts and the ability to explain the ramifications of a transaction. She volunteered to serve as agent to all ten owners, guiding them through the legal technicalities of the sale, which occurred within 5 months and at a price of 6% more than the lot’s assessed value. This allowed SFSB to establish an endowed $400,000 scholarship using the proceeds. “Kelly never lost hope, stayed on top of every detail, and repeatedly followed-up on contacting all the parties with exceptional diplomatic and effective communication skills,” SFSB’s Interim President and CEO Mary Dwyer wrote in a recommendation letter. “Her style along with her legal background and superior knowledge of real estate transactions served all parties exceptionally well and resulted in the sale of the property.” The Santa Barbara Association of Realtors presented Knight with the two awards at its Annual Awards and Installation Ceremony on December 1 at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. “I take immense pride in having provided the vision, commitment, and determination required to facilitate the sale of the property to attain this noble objective,” Knight said after receiving the Howard Gates Award. “I hope that this Santa Barbara real estate sale success story serves as an inspiration to fellow realtors, motivating them to explore opportunities to leverage their skills for the betterment of our community.” Knight is the founder and associate broker for Knight Real Estate Group, the number one producer in Village Properties’ Santa Barbara office for 2022, and the number three producer companywide with over $150 million in sales since 2020. Knight works with associate
Gabe Grandcolas and Kelly Knight Gabe Grandcolas to bring outstanding client advocacy, true professionalism, and unsurpassed knowledge of the field of real estate to all aspects of the buying and selling process in Santa Barbara, Montecito, Hope Ranch and Goleta. The team also specializes in trust and probate sales, supporting estate trustees in the sale of real estate assets after the passing of a loved one. Message From the President
BY TODD SHEA - 2023 PRESIDENT - SANTA BARBARA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®
THANK YOU SANTA BARBARA COMMUNITY, REALTORS®, AND AFFILIATES
I
This year challenged me: Walking into a room in Washington DC to speak directly to our congress member about various Senate bills and legislation that affects our area or standing up in front of City Council to talk about the permitting process and tenant/ landlord legislation, and with the architectural review committee, CAR and NAR legislative committees and high-level challenges and threats to our profession, while running our board of directors meetings with fantastic back and forth dialogue and discussion; people who are passionate about our association being the best it can be. I grew this year, as a realtor and as a person, and I thank you for that opportunity. Also, as you should when you finish something, I was excited to reflect on some great successes this year. This year was challenging and if you are feeling like not much happened this year, I implore you to take out your phones, go ahead and take them out and go to your photos. Take a minute, after reading this, and just scroll through your photos. go through a couple of weeks, get back to a few months and even the year. Mine is filled with screenshots of things I want to remember and social media stuff, but more importantly, it is filled with amazing experiences, places I have been, impactful memories, and friends, family, and co-workers I have been around. I feel so grateful. I hope you do too.
We have done a ton of amazing things this year. I will be leaving a lot out but some memorable ones for me are:
only financial contributions, but also physical work is being done by our volunteer Realtor and Affiliate Members.
NAR: • Speaking on The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) in support of the rescission of its proposed upfront fee to borrowers at the time of a loan.
• We Held our first Cross Brokerage SBAOR-sponsored member event with our successful Lawn Bowling competition.
• Speaking before the NAR consumer advocacy committee; was approved for a grant for our association. CAR: • Lobbying for more funding for the American Dream Campaign, from the $350 million spent in 11 days to another round of funding coming soon. • Advocating for our members and bringing back all the hot tips and updates from legislative, to tech and everything in between. I am looking forward to continuing this next year as a CAR director. LOCALLY: • Working with staff and CEO Brian Johnson on a Leadership Playbook for our association. A living document to help incoming leaders and committees work better with staff, know their expectations and calendar, as well as see what positions are available to move up into. • Began including video content in the SBAOR newsletter, and ‘Agents in the Wild’ social media campaign. • Supporting YPN and establishing it as an official committee with events for new members, philanthropy and more. A committee I will be proud to be a part of next year to help it continue to grow. • Working with Habitat for Humanity on two great clean-up projects, one on the streets of the Eastside and the other on a home on the Westside as well as SBAOR being recognized by Habitat as a mover and shaker this year. This means that not
• And I got to Speak to a ton of agents this year. This was one of the highlights of my year in hearing feedback, new ideas and talking shop with our local Realtors. In looking forward, we are a strong community of incredible agents and affiliates, backed by a staff at SBAOR that is a well-oiled machine under the new dynamic leadership of Brian Johnson. Thank you to Daniel and the rest of my Zia Group Team for supporting me this year. You all made it much easier, and I knew if I had conflicts someone from the team would step up and help. To my wife: I appreciate you and love you. Thank you for your balancing things, and for your insight and support. Michele Allyn: You are a very deserving president for next year, with all of your experience and volunteerism for years on boards and committees with NAR and CAR. Congratulations to you! Two pieces of advice for next year: Be open to realtor/affiliate feedback and ideas. Actively search it out and connect with members. It is the best opportunity I have ever had to meet so many of our members. This was one of my favorite parts of my presidency. Second: have a game plan. Take some time over the next few weeks and set some goals. Even if you don't reach all of them, having a game plan helped me and the 2023 board stay proactive throughout the year. Thank you all for reading my articles this year. Wishing you and yours a successful and incredible 2024.

f you are like me, once you are coming close to finishing a project, you look back and wish you could have done better or done things differently. I am feeling a little of this as the year comes to an end. I really enjoyed the opportunity to lead, work with our staff, agents, and affiliates, and write these articles each week. But looking back, of course, I wish I could have done more, impacted more, and maybe not go to more meetings, there were plenty of those!! But what an opportunity to be a leader. I wanted the best for our association this year.
