“HOW WONDERFUL IT IS THAT NOBODY NEED WAIT A SINGLE MOMENT BEFORE STARTING TO IMPROVE THE WORLD.” – ANNE FRANK For 38 years, the Fund for Santa Barbara (The FUND) has been our county’s hub for the progressive community because of our commitment to rise and meet new challenges head-on. We uplift and empower community voices to speak out against injustice and work for meaningful social change. We do this through our three programs: GRANT-MAKING
CAPACITY BUILDING
YOUTH MAKING CHANGE
• Our Grant-Making Committee of volunteer activists, representing diverse communities, truly sets us apart. They are empowered to prioritize our grant dollars to address the pressing needs of our communities.
• We serve as an activist network and convene organizations and community leaders to address emerging threats to social, economic, and environmental justice.
• Embarking on its 10th year, Youth Making Change (YMC) is the only youth-led grantmaking program in Santa Barbara County, giving youth the opportunity to engage in philanthropy and develop as leaders.
• In 2017, we awarded grants to over 60 organizations, including but not limited to CAUSE, Future Leaders of America, Immigrant Hope, Just Communities, Pacific Pride Foundation, Santa Barbara County Action Network and many other organizations featured in this guide. • Since 1980, we have awarded over $5 million to over 1,000 grassroots projects advancing social, economic, political, and environmental change in Santa Barbara County
• Over 175 different organizations each year attend our numerous educational workshops with nationally recognized trainers. • We provide over 1,000 hours of FREE direct consulting and advice to more than 300 groups each year.
Now more than ever, our role is essential, and we look forward to working with you to meet the challenges ahead. – The FUND Board of Directors, Staff, Grant-Making Committee and Youth Making Change North & South Boards

CELEBRATING 38 YEARS OF “CHANGE, NOT CHARITY”™
• The North and South YMC Boards together grant $30,000 per year to youth-led projects that address challenges affecting local youth. • Since 2008, 335 youth have participated as YMC board members, awarding $245,490 to 129 organizations.
Dear Readers, In 2017, the Independent in partnership with The Fund for Santa Barbara launched the pilot program Santa Barbara Gives!, a year-end online fundraising program for area nonprofits. More than 590 donors combined to give over $400,000 to 44 nonprofits. This year we are partnering again with The Fund for a 2018 campaign. In the pages that follow, we introduce you to 55 nonprofit organizations that range from large agencies to all-volunteer grassroots organizations, all of them working hard to make our community thrive. Each organization presents a social change project you can help fund through a donation at sbgives.org. Their work focuses on areas from arts and culture and the environment to homelessness, LGBTQ well-being, and youth and education. Faced with the natural disasters of this past year, our community showed how resilient we can be when we come together and work for the greater good. We hope that presenting these nonprofits and their projects inspires you to learn about the work they are doing in our community and to give a donation as low as $10 to help them reach their goals. The selected nonprofits are a small sliver of the nonprofit organizations that make up the fabric of our community, but they each have ambitious projects to make our community more accessible, empowered, and sustainable. The projects they put forward look to change systemic issues as opposed to fixing symptoms. It is easy to get complacent in our day-to-day lives, but now is the time to be conscientious about what is going on around us. Through this program, we hope to introduce you to organizations that you may not know about and provide an easy way to support their work to improve the lives of all of us. This endeavor was not possible without the efforts of The Fund for Santa Barbara, and we are deeply appreciative of their partnership. We also thank the Brittingham Family Foundation, the McCune Foundation, Montecito Bank & Trust, and the Santa Barbara Foundation for their support of this program, and we thank the 55 nonprofit organizations participating this year for their tireless work. Finally, we thank you for being an Independent reader. Now it’s your turn to visit sbgives.org and Give!
Dear Santa Barbara Independent Reader, The Fund for Santa Barbara is honored once again to be partnering with the Santa Barbara Independent to help raise critical funds for some of our region’s most important community-based organizations. The success of last year’s pilot program — over $400,000 raised for 44 nonprofits — shows that Santa Barbara Gives! has tremendous potential, and we are grateful to the more than 590 donors for that success! It’s not often that a media outlet is willing to leverage their platform to help raise that level of support to address community challenges. We applaud the Santa Barbara Independent for stepping up again to help our community in this way. While Santa Barbara County is fortunate to be a region of tremendous prosperity and natural beauty, our region also faces many of the same problems that challenge our society as a whole: poverty, environmental degradation, homelessness, racial and ethnic prejudices, violence against women, homophobia, and many other social, economic, and environmental problems. In this guide you will find over fifty social change and cultural projects selected by the FUND’s activist-led Grant Making Committee, who are working to address some of those problems here, where we live and work. Most of these groups are working for change by focusing on the root causes of societal problems by providing long-term solutions while operating in a manner that advances democracy here at home, and being responsive to and directed by the people they serve. We encourage you to take a good look at this guide and consider supporting any number of the organizations featured. And then please share this guide with a friend, or better yet, visit sbgives.org and share it with your social media networks. With much gratitude,

ARTS MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
NOTES FOR NOTES ® WHAT WE DO:
WHAT WE DO:
Arts Mentorship Program (AMP) provides creative guidance, mentorship, and financial support to young and emerging, performing artists in the Santa Barbara area who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity. AMP provides four core programs: Scholarship Mentorship Program, Rent Subsidy Program, NO Limits, and Student Performance Companies.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: WORLD MUSIC ADVENTURES
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: SCHOLARSHIP MENTORSHIP PROGRAM AND NO LIMITS
The Scholarship Mentorship Program is an arts education project that provides financial support, creative guidance, and mentorship to low-income and at-risk youth pursuing dance education in Santa Barbara. This opportunity allows them to train, perform, and have the same experience as the most affluent students in our community. Every scholarship recipient meets with a mentor three times per year. NO Limits works in tandem and is an entirely free 4-week dance program with two classes: an Adaptive Dance class for students with disabilities and an All Access Class for students with limited financial resources. This project happens in the spring and the summer. In 2019, we would like to increase participants, mentorship, and financial support. CHALLENGE GIFT:

SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: ARTS EDUCATION FOR ALL CHILDREN
In World Music Adventures, youth ages 6-12 take a musical journey around the world! Over nine weeks, youth “travel” to various countries, learning about the geography, culture, history, and music of the region. Special guest artists give interactive studio performances using an instrument identified in the lesson. Youth reflect upon their “journey” through responsive art, drawing about what they learned and/or creating 3D replicas of instruments and making music of their own. Through this impactful program, youth discover other cultures, increasing their knowledge and empathy and expanding their worldview through the universal language of music.

Fratelli, A Men’s Chorus, is a chorus of about two dozen gay men and their allies who seek to create extraordinary musical experiences that inspire compassion, community, pride, and activism within and toward LGBTQ+ peoples in Santa Barbara. FOOD FROM THE HEART
HEALTH & WELLNESS
WHAT WE DO:
FAMILIES ACT! WHAT WE DO:
Families ACT! is a grassroots organization that envisions and advocates for a fundamental change in our mental health and criminal justice systems. We help each other navigate a fragmented system of care and work together to end the revolving door of incarceration, hospitalization, and homelessness experienced by people with behavioral health conditions.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: STOP SANTA BARBARA’S REVOLVING DOOR
In 2019, Families ACT! expects a decade of advocacy to bear fruit and dozens of new beds in hospitals, residential treatment centers, shelters and supportive housing units to be funded. As Santa Barbara City and County department heads and law enforcement agencies, local hospitals, developers, treatment providers, homeless, mental health and social justice activists at long last come together to envision and craft a more compassionate continuum of care, Families ACT! is the voice of families most directly impacted by the glaring gaps in our existing system. We will expand the depth and breadth of our advocacy to include a wide cross section of individuals and family members impacted by the lack of services, the lack of coordination between agencies and the conditions on our streets and at the County Jail. Together, we will work to transform a punitive and neglectful approach to mental health care into one that helps to restore dignity and wellbeing of people in our County suffering from complex mental health conditions. CHALLENGE GIFT: Anonymous
In every community, there are individuals who are homebound and suffering from illness or injury with no support network. Part of the healing process is being cared for nutritionally. Food From The Heart recognizes that need by preparing nutritious, healing meals that are delivered by caring volunteers to those in crisis due to illness or injury or who are under the care of hospice, visiting nurses, or other medical professionals. Food From The Heart does not charge for this service.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT:
GLEANING FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Each week, our dedicated volunteers glean more than 500 pounds of fresh, quality fruit for our clients. This year, our team has already picked more than 20,000 pounds of fruit that would otherwise go to waste. We also collect fresh produce with partners Veggie Rescue and Pilgrim Terrace Community Garden. Our bread-gleaning operation is similarly successful, collecting bread from bakeries that is still fresh and wholesome. We donate any extra harvest to charitable organizations that serve low-income families and homeless individuals in our community, such as Unity Shoppe, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, Organic Soup Kitchen, and Rescue Mission. In California, adults with mental illness are twice as likely to suffer from chronic health conditions and half as likely to seek treatment. They die 25 years earlier than others — not from mental illness but from untreated preventable illnesses: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease, exacerbated by poor dental health. The major obstacle to care is the complexity of navigating our healthcare system. The Environmental Defense Center works to protect and enhance the local environment through education, advocacy, and legal action.

STOPPING THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING SCHEME
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: FARMING FOR LIFE
At Fairview Gardens, we believe that organic farming and eating is the route to healthier bodies, healthier communities, and a healthier planet. In 2018, we tested this hypothesis by combining our Food System Entrepreneurial Academy with the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute’s Fresh Food Farmacy program. Doctors prescribed vegetables to low-income diabetic patients, and our food system entrepreneurs grew the treatments on the farm. From March to July, Fairview Gardens provided locally grown, organic vegetables to the patients for free and improved many major health biomarkers in our pilot cohort. This year, we will go from serving 20 families to several hundred.

Children who garden spend valuable time outside, develop STEAM and analytical abilities, cultivate a deeper understanding of ecology, and feel an increased responsibility to care for nature. When school cafeterias serve school-grown produce, students gain a sense of pride and eat more fruits and vegetables at school and at home. Your donation will keep our School Gardens program thriving and alive with possibility for students at 38 schools throughout Santa Barbara County. CHALLENGE GIFT: Explore Ecology Board of Directors

WHAT WE DO:
The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network is a nonprofit organization that has been rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured, orphaned, and sick wildlife in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties for over 30 years. Our mission is to give wildlife of all sorts a second chance, whether they are coyotes, owls, squirrels, or sparrows. We answer 10,000 calls to our helpline and care for 3,500 animals annually. SBWCN is licensed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: Here in Santa Barbara we are surrounded by beautiful wild animal neighbors; we must learn to live in harmony with them. The largest barrier to saving and serving wildlife is public awareness about SBWCN and its care center. SBWCN would like to invite people to care for wildlife through educational welcome packets to homeowners, homeowner associations, and tenants, including information about whom to call in a wildlife emergency. This direct-mail and door-todoor outreach would have a special focus on North Santa Barbara County, an area from which SBWCN receives the fewest patients, but has no shortage of wildlife in need.

TV Santa Barbara recognizes the need for low- to moderate-income youth in our community to have opportunities outside of the formal education they receive at school. SB ALTERNATIVES TO VIOLENCE PROJECT
SB TEEN LEGAL CLINIC WHAT WE DO:
SOCIAL JUSTICE
WHAT WE DO:
Alternatives to Violence Project empowers people to lead nonviolent lives through affirmation, respect for all, community building, cooperation, and trust. Founded in and developed from the real-life experiences of prisoners and others, and building on a spiritual base, AVP encourages every person’s innate power to positively transform themselves and the world. Santa Barbara AVP offers experiential workshops in personal growth and creative conflict management for adults and youth in and around the County of Santa Barbara and, on occasion, elsewhere in California.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: UNA FAMILIA CONNECTADA/ FAMILIES CONNECTING WELL
At-risk youth are becoming facilitators and leaders in Alternatives to Violence Project workshops, being aware of their previous behavior and working to change themselves. The next logical step is to involve parents in their teens’ shift toward a nonviolent approach to life. Parents of these workshop grads want to be involved! They are ready to recruit others for an introductory workshop. We ask for your support to make a parents’ mini-workshop (which we will eventually develop into 18 hours) financially feasible by covering needs such as childcare, reimbursement for transportation and lost wages, and simultaneous interpretation. CHALLENGE GIFT:

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PROJECT
SBTLC’s Restorative Justice Project provides an alternative response to juvenile crime that promotes healing and peace building by returning power to individuals and communities using the principles of restorative justice. Restorative justice focuses on a collaborative rehabilitation process through reconciliation between the offender, victims, and community at large. SBTLC intends to use S.B. Gives! funds to sustain restorative justice training and to promoting our services within this community.
SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECT: KEEPING LOCAL IMMIGRANT FAMILIES TOGETHER IN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY
Santa Barbara County is home to 100,000 immigrants. More than 43,000 are undocumented, and nearly 48 percent of children in the region live in a household where one or more parent is foreign born. Yet the ILDC is the only nonprofit organization in the County providing pro bono deportation defense services, outside of the occasional case. We are building an army of volunteer attorneys in the private bar to provide pro bono representation to indigent immigrants facing imminent deportation. By providing representation in bond hearings, and some merits hearings, the ILDC offers our area immigrant families solace and support in light of the Trump administration’s antiimmigrant agenda.
