Outgoing 2018 President Andy Alexander was generous with messages of gratitude to the SBAOR staff, committees, and members of the association who helped him in his role as president. As he listed highlights from the year, the $650,000 in assistance that the Realtor Relief Fund was able to provide to local community members who were hardest hit stood out as a top accomplishment. Incoming 2019 President Thomas Schultheis accepted the gavel from Alexander and charmed the crowd with a short but heartfelt speech directing the audience to invest in their community. In reflecting on the challenges of the past year, Schultheis likened our roles in society to those of campers who leave an area in better condition than they found it. He vowed to do the same for the association and encouraged all members to pitch in and do their part. The Howard Gates Award and Jack Kelly Award, for most difficult transactions during the year, were both presented to Steve Golis. SBAOR Honorary Members for Life were presented to Joanne Stoltz and Gay Milligin, both of whom were commended for their professionalism, kindness, and work ethic. The Affiliate Member of the Year was presented to Guy Rivera, who has served on numerous committees and helped establish an affiliates’ scholarship fund through the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara. By far the most moving dedication of the event was when Jasmine Tennis introduced the inaugural Realtor Award of Excellence. The award was dedicated to the late Rebecca Riskin, who lost her life tragically in the January 2018 Montecito debris flow. Riskin was awarded the honor “in recognition of her most distinguished career, history of excellence and collaboration, willingness to share knowledge with others, and her well-earned reputation for demonstrating the highest standards of ethics and professionalism.” In an exchange that was tearful for everyone involved, Tennis presented the award to Riskin’s son Robert. This was a year of adversity, loss, tragedy, and resulting persistence, cohesion, and renewal in our community. This year’s SBAOR Installation Luncheon recognized and honored each of these aspects. As 2019 President Thomas Schultheis encouraged the audience to “go with gratitude” so that “we can continue to add value to the community as a whole,” he established an atmosphere of hope and set the stage for a bright year ahead. As I stepped out into the bright December sunshine, I felt inspired indeed. n

Imagine X Holds Ugly Xmas Sweater Party to Benefit Jodi House

O

n December 1, Imagine X Functional Neurology held its fourth annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party to benefit Santa Barbara–based Jodi House Brain Injury Support Center. Staff and patients of Imagine X; Jodi House staff, members, and supporters; and the general public came out with some mighty ugly Christmas sweaters and a lot of holiday cheer. Imagine X owner Dr. Adam Harcourt, who serves on the board of Jodi House, wanted to raise critical funds while throwing a fun party at the same time. The party was held in Imagine X’s attractive and spacious offices on Anacapa Street and even had karaoke this year. One guest at the party, Nina McConnell, related in an interview how earlier this year she moved here from the Chicago area because of Jodi House. A family member, Jeff, suffered a severe brain injury from a car accident, which required three years of rehabilitation. She and her daughter then searched the entire country for affordable options for the next phase, which led them to Jodi House. She shared how at Jodi House, Jeff can participate in enriching activities and is treated with amazing respect and kindness. Moreover, the support he gets from Jodi House gives McConnell increased freedom, so there has been a huge improvement in quality of life for both of them. Jodi House assists brain injury survivors in their physical, cognitive, and emotional recovery through classes, individual counseling, support groups, case management, information, and referral. Founded in 1982 by families of adults suffering from brain injuries, Jodi House serves about 115 active members this year. While there is a nominal one-time enrollment fee and a monthly sliding-scale fee, 77 percent of members pay neither because they qualify as low-, very low-, or extremely low-income under a HUD standard adopted for Santa Barbara County. Nobody is ever turned away for an inability to pay. Each week, 20 different classes are offered on a drop-in basis. Classes such as yoga and dance promote physical balance and strength, while other classes address cognitive function and memory improvement.

Emotional support is provided on a one-on-one basis and through peer support groups. Also, the organization just got grant funding for a licensed mentalhealth professional who will provide psycho-social counseling. Jodi House members work one-on-one with a case manager to identify their goals for recovery, track their progress, and receive ongoing support. Goals may include obtaining housing, learning independent living skills and coping strategies, finding employment, and re-integrating socially with the community. Recently, in partnership with Family Service Agency, Jodi House began offering a caregiver support group, which quickly filled up with caregivers grateful to have their own support group. Another recent development was the hiring of a Spanish-speaking case manager. About 20 percent of members are Hispanic. The Santa Barbara facility, located at 625 Chapala Street, is open to anyone, regardless of geographic location, and members come from Lompoc and Santa Maria. Case management services are offered in Ventura, and early next year, a support group for brain injury survivors will start in San Luis Obispo. Jodi House receives significant funding from the California Department of Rehabilitation, but supplementing that with private sources of funding is critical for Jodi House to offer the range of services it does. An offer by an anonymous boardmember to match up to $10,000 in donations made before the end of the year makes now an especially good time to donate. ‘Done Moving’ in Montecito Couple Creates Home Base for Retirement and Family

previous home. The design-build team was set. Described by the homeowners as a ghastly mishmash of design features, the home’s main living area—a wide and vaulted space linking the kitchen to a dining area to the living room and fireplace—originally showcased heavy stone pillars, archways clashing with archways, and bloated ceiling fans.

All in all, there was far too much busy detail, which would distract from the homeowners’ desire to build a nice backdrop for all the furniture arriving from their previous home. Their old place was nearly twice as big, but the goal wasn’t to downsize so much as “right-size” their post-career lives into a final home with all their favorite pieces. Meeting every Thursday, the team decided not to rush the planning process. Better to get the concepts just right—and get them all down on paper, with cost and timeline accounted for—before launching the project. After a year in planning and another year in process, their patience paid off. The Giffin & Crane team — led by project manager Dana Anderson — calmed the busy living spaces by eliminating superfluous arches, lifting ceilings, and moving

those bulky stone pillars outside where they belong. A linen closet off the kitchen became a bar. Boring cabinetry found an elegantly antique look with a bit of creative refinishing. And the three-car attached garage became a family room, office, and library, as crews built a new, detached 800-squarefoot garage on the other side of the driveway. Other highlights include a Napoleon directvent gas fireplace, custom light fixtures by Merv Newton, and all-new wood floors. With the finishing touches made in 2015 — including a French courtyard out the back, with a burbling fountain and a hidden owl box—it’s the sort of home that makes its owners say, “We’re done moving.”

uilt in 2011, the 4,200-square-foot single-family residence had plenty of attractive ingredients, such as steelreinforced framing, vaulted ceilings, and a sensible floor plan. Outside, a wooded ambiance invited quiet privacy, all within walking distance of Montecito shops and restaurants. Purchased in 2012 by a retired couple—who prefer a bit of anonymity—the house would serve as a comfortable home base between travels and a grand gathering spot when their grown children headed home for the holidays.
