Cute Clearview Road Cottage I ’m not scared of fixer-uppers. I’ve lived in houses that were described as “needing work.” I’ve bought houses — more than once — that were kindly referred to as being in “as-is condition,” complete with extension cords as part of the electrical system and crawl spaces that were deemed inaccessible mystery areas. I’m no stranger to the compromises that many of us make in order to be able to afford a home in Santa Barbara. But no matter the condition, you know when a house is meant to be yours. And once you’re in love, reason can fly out the window, even when making the biggest financial decision of your life. When I asked to visit the house for sale at 1621 Clearview Road, I was warned that the house is a fixer-upper, and that if it was raining, I’d see buckets in the living room. I was not to be deterred. I made sure I was wearing sensible shoes and a jacket with a hood, just in case the raindrops missed the buckets. I adjusted my expectations and headed over to the Westside. I pulled up to the house and sat and stared for a minute. It is positively adorable. Realtors would say it has curb appeal. I was just plain smitten. The front yard sports an array of succulents bursting with color. Aloe plants with bright-orange bottlebrush flowers vie for attention with tall birds of paradise, lining both sides of a brick walkway that leads up to a cheery front porch. The house itself is bright yellow, framed with turquoise wood details and a red-tile roof. It’s a quintessential Spanish-style cottage on a cute street in a desirable neighborhood. I paused to remind myself that this little cottage “needs work.” A turquoise front door with a curved peekaboo window and vintage hardware is set into the left side of the porch and opens into the living room. Hardwood floors, original wood-framed windows, and peach-colored walls grace the living room and an adjacent dining alcove. A striking fireplace set off by a white mantel and framed with orange and blue tiles is the focal point of the living room and looks like the perfect place to snuggle on chilly nights. An arched opening leads into the dining area and the kitchen beyond. The house was built in 1925, and the kitchen shows off what appears to be the original tile counter and backsplash. A back door from the kitchen opens to a big, private back-
yard, where a lawn with fruit trees leads to a one-car detached garage with a separate laundry room. Back inside, a hallway leads to one bedroom in the front and another in back, with the bathroom in between. The bathroom is evidence of why this house is a fixer-upper. It has a bathtub and a toilet, but no sink. And no drywall. It’s a project waiting to be tackled. True to the warning I’d been offered earlier, buckets stood ready, and the ceiling looks like it needs some attention. But the back bedroom has French doors that open out onto the backyard. I can imagine a patio outside that door one day, maybe sporting a fire pit or even a hot tub just steps outside the bedroom. However, those are prospects for the future. This house has plenty of needs to be tended to beforehand. I hope that someone falls in love with this little cottage: with the tiles in the fireplace, the succulents in the front yard, and the peekaboo window in the front door. I also hope that they have patience, a good imagination, and maybe even a contractor’s license. Because this house needs — and deserves — some TLC to bring it back to its original splendor and to set the stage for a magical future.

Inspiring Instructor Speaks at Braille Institute Auxiliary Meeting

t the January monthly meeting of the Braille Institute Auxiliary of Santa Barbara, Nutsiri “Earth” Kidkul, a visually impaired technology instructor at the Braille Institute Los Angeles Center (BILAC), enlightened and inspired auxiliary members and guests with her talk about her teaching role and her life experiences. Kidkul, the lead instructor at BILAC’s Connection Pointe technology center, explained how after she became blind eight years ago, she enrolled in BILAC’s internship program. With her love for technology, she joined the newly created Connection Pointe staff and rose quickly to lead instructor, teaching students oneon-one. Kidkul shared how much she enjoys teaching students, who range in age from 18 to 85, about different technologies that enable them to become more independent. She explained how Microsoft’s Seeing AI and similar apps have a wide range of uses for the visually impaired. With her phone, Kidkul demonstrated how the app takes a photo and immediately provides the user with information about the subject. It protects the blind from being cheated out of change when paying for groceries, bus fare, and other items — an occurrence that she related can otherwise occur. When photographing a person, the app will identify the person’s gender, age, and emotional state. A couple of auxiliary members were quite pleased with the ageguessing feature, which apparently errs on the side of younger years. The app saves the photo and then alerts the user in the future when that person is nearby. Kidkul explained how Instacart and other services allow people to order and pay for groceries online. Not only is picking out items in a store challenging, but the travel component is as well. Kidkul quipped, with a smile, “Travel with eggs — good luck with that.” GPS apps that tell people their exact location are also part of her instruction. Kidkul also teaches computer skills, both mainstream and accessibility skills, and on both regular computers and on pricey devices that display in Braille instead of on a monitor. Braille Institute Director of Digital Programs Ben Pomeroy shared with the group that he hired Kidkul
and had her train other visually impaired individuals to be instructors because the perspective that visually impaired individuals have makes them more effective than sighted instructors. A nice side benefit is that the instructors gain valuable work experience, which enables them to move on to other jobs outside of the Braille Institute. Each year, Kidkul trains new instructors. The nonprofit Braille Institute, which is funded almost entirely from private sources, offers free programs, classes, and services at six centers and 220 community outreach locations in Southern California. The Santa Barbara Center, at 2031 De la Vina Street, offers a wide variety of classes, including a new and popular Advanced Sensory Awareness class, which takes students to places as varied as Costco and the Santa Barbara Bowl. There are other general living skills classes and classes in cooking, art, music, fitness, and other subjects. A few classes are offered in Spanish. It also offers low-vision consultations and an orientation and mobility program. The center serves a large community, with 703 students enrolling in classes and utilizing other, nonlibrary services in the first half of this fiscal year. Even more took advantage of its onsite and online library services. The center serves people in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, and transportation is provided free of charge to qualified students who live between Goleta and Carpinteria. The Braille Institute Auxiliary of Santa Barbara is a group of 68 volunteers who raise funds, provide community outreach, and help out at the Santa Barbara Center. New members are always welcome; email Barbara Toumayan at bartoum@aol.com. The Santa Barbara Center has more than 100 volunteers who function as drivers, teachers, classroom aides, and library aides. om Henson worked alongside architect Peter Becker for 15 years, collaborating on dozens of projects, from small additions and remodels to extensive renovations and all-new estate homes, like the one pictured. Becker passed away in 2016, leaving his firm—Becker Henson Niksto Architects —in the able hands of Henson and Jacob Niksto, who work out of downtown Santa Barbara’s historic Flying A Studio.
