It doesn’t matter if you are visiting, new to S.B., or a native. If you are lucky enough to be here for Fiesta, you can be as busy as you want, or pick just a few things to do. Let The Santa Barbara Independent’s annual guide to Old Spanish Days help plan this year’s festivities for you. Circle must-sees in the guide such as Fiesta Pequeña, the mercados, Noches de Ronda, and the parades (see the entire lineup for El Desfile Histórico on p. 12), or close your eyes, point, and surprise yourself with Our Lady of Guadalupe Mercado, Fiesta at Paseo Nuevo, or a tour of Mission Santa Barbara or the County Courthouse. This year’s guide will introduce you to this year’s Saint Barbara, Christine Herrera, and you will learn about two fiesta-themed exhibits, Project Fiesta! Building a Complete History of Old Spanish Days at the S.B. Historical Museum and Picturing Old Spanish Days at Sullivan Goss, An American Gallery. With entertainment, culture, food, and tradition, there is something for everybody at Old Spanish Days Fiesta, so remember: ¡Viva la Fiesta!
On the cover: Historical photograph from project fiesta! read more on p. 13.

Meet Fiesta 2016’s
Saint Barbara
R
eina del Mar Parlor No. 126, Native Daughters of the Golden West, has selected its member Christine Herrera to portray Saint Barbara, the city’s patron saint, during the 2016 Old Spanish Days Fiesta. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Saint Barbara portrayal by a member of Reina del Mar Parlor, which was founded in 1901. A ninth-generation Californian, Christine Herrera was born and raised in Santa Barbara and is the daughChristine Herrera ter of Louis and Barbara Herrera. She is an alumna of Franklin Elementary School, S.B. Junior High School, and S.B. High School and has also attended S.B. City College. Christine is descended from José Francisco Ortega, the first commander of the Presidio of Santa Barbara. Her Presidio ancestors also include the Olivera, Ruiz, Pico, and Arrellanes families, some of whom arrived in California in 1769. Herrera will ride on the parlor-sponsored St. Barbara float in El Desfile Histórico, one of the few horse-drawn floats in the historical parade. She will be presented at Fiesta Pequeña at Mission Santa Barbara and will appear each night at Las Noches de Ronda at the Courthouse Sunken Gardens. She will be dressed in the saint’s traditional white gown and scarlet cape and will wear a golden crown, carrying the martyr’s palm frond and a golden chalice. For social events, she will wear a Spanish-style white lace gown and a traditional white mantilla. Let’s all congratulate Christina on upholding the honor of this beautiful Fiesta tradition. n

or visitors and even for some residents of Santa Barbara, Old Spanish Days can be something of an enigma. Depending on whom you talk to, either it's a deeply felt community or family tradition that goes back to the 18th century, or it’s a bunch of tourists day drinking while watching ersatz flamenco. Or, if you are lucky enough to find someone reasonable, it’s something else that exists in between these extremes of uncritical reverence and dismissive cynicism. Meanwhile, there’s no better cure for Fiesta confusion than Project Fiesta!, the Santa Barbara Historical Museum’s ongoing attempt to gather images, objects, and testimony that reveal our annual descent into an imaginary Old Spanish culture for what it is — an evolving set of practices, some frivolous, others heartfelt, all of which add up to an event and a feeling that could only happen in Santa Barbara. Project Fiesta! consolidates and documents what Old Spanish Days set out to do — invent a tradition inspired by the past but designed to create new memories rather than get lost in a labyrinthine quest for historical fidelity. This edition of the exhibit focuses by Charles Donelan on the music and dance that form the backbone of the Old Spanish Days celebration. Lilting melodies and buoyant dance rhythms fill the gallery space (at an appropriately civil volume, to be sure), leading visitors to the centerpiece of the memorabilia this time out, which is the original marimba of Fiesta stalwart and Santa Barbara legend Lencho Martinez. For 63 years, the sound of Lencho’s marimba was the siren call that let everyone know it was party time in Santa Barbara. From the Coral Casino to countless homes and backyards, this tireless and talented musician wove familiar melodies into syncopated arrangements that never failed to get people up and dancing. For a glimpse of Old Spanish Days the way it was in its 20th-century prime, there’s now a guaranteed authentic experience that includes beautiful images, carefully researched text, and danceable music waiting for you at the S.B. Historical Museum.

or sheer tenacity in following through on a project, it’s hard to beat the team at Sullivan Goss, An American Gallery. Blessed with the acquisition of several outright masterpieces related to the city’s Old Spanish Days celebration, Frank Goss and his curators began combing the coast and beyond two years ago in search of every imaginable manifestation of this Fiesta fixation in visual art, and now, with the opening of Picturing Old Spanish Days, we can share the fruits of their labor in this charmingly eclectic carnival of festive images. At the core of the show is a pair of gifted artists with decidedly romantic tendencies. Born in Mexico in 1910, Jesús Helguera crossed the Atlantic twice while he was growing up, first to escape the chaos of the revolution in Mexico, and then to avoid the economic catastrophe of the Spanish Civil War. His painting “La bamba” is an exuberant celebra-

Perfectly suited in its active composition and bright realism to reproduction as a poster or postcard, “La bamba” nevertheless demands to be seen in person, which is the only way to appreciate the extraordinarily painstaking approach that Helguera took to developing the exquisite surface of this modern icon. Drawing on influences that range from Aztec mythology to Catholicism and pin-up girls, Hel-
guera captures the essence of the sensuous fantasy that animates our Spanish-themed August bacchanal. While it was Helguera’s “La bamba” that launched this project, it was the discovery of Theodore Jackman’s work that demonstrated just how much potential there was in looking for specifically Fiesta-themed art. “Fan Dance,” an oil painting by Jackman from the early 20th century, predates “La bamba” and takes a different but still highly romantic approach to the same subject of a flirtatious dancer and her admirer. Unlike Helguera, Jackman separates the male and female figures, giving him some room to scope her out. Elsewhere in the show, we can find brilliant work by a remarkably diverse cast of artists, from current Santa Barbara resident Angela Perko’s Mayan-influenced fantasy “Cas-

tillo” to the haunting portrait of a lady with a fan by Japanese-American modernist Sueo Serisawa. Visiting this show is sure to reawaken your romantic Fiesta dreams.
