Missions of Edwin Deakin One of the earliest artists to record all 21 California missions in color, Edwin Deakin visited each mission and made these field watercolor sketches between 1897 and 1899, documenting the missions as they were falling into ruin. His work had a profound impact on efforts to save them before they disappeared forever. Previously thought to be lost to the 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco, this permanent collection is one of S.B.’s most valued treasures. Noon-5pm. S.B. Historical Museum, 136 E. Spanish Days Fiesta, a Fiesta tradition since 1926. A fifth-generation Californian, Robin Emily Hill Cederlof was born in Santa Barbara and raised in Goleta, the daughter of the late Earl M. Hill and Rose Ann Fullerton Hill. Her father’s ancestor, George Washington Hill, settled on a 40-acre farm in Goleta near Fairview and Encina Avenues on July 4, 1874. He and his descendants grew lima beans, walnuts, and lemons. Earl Hill managed the farm and became Goleta’s first chiropractor. The new Saint Barbara attended Goleta Valley Junior High School and Dos Pueblos High School. She holds a radiologic technology degree from Santa Barbara City College. Mrs. Cederlof has been involved with Fiesta activities since childhood. She participated in the children’s parade, performed with the Doris Smith Dance Studio, and at the age of 16 became a volunteer for Old Spanish Days, delivering posters, badges, and programs to sponsors after school. She has served 11 years as a marshal for the historical parade. Robin Cederlof will ride on the parlor-sponsored St. Barbara float in El Desfile Histórico and appear at Mission Santa Barbara’s Fiesta Pequeña and at Las Noches de Ronda in the Courthouse Sunken Gardens n Robin Emily Hill Cederlof nightly.

This year marks the 93rd anniversary of the Fiesta Historical Parade (or El Desfile Histórico), one of the largest equestrian parades in the U.S., featuring more than 600 horses as well as floats, dancers, and antique carriages, coaches, and wagons. The parade starts at the west end of Cabrillo Boulevard, proceeds east along the beach to State Street, and then goes up State Street to Sola Street. Noon. Free-$38.

SpIriTS OF FIESTa La prEsidEnTE e r very year, two young dancers are chosen as the Spirit and Junior Spirit of Fiesta, and this year, it’s a graceful, strong, leaderly spirit that 2017 Spirit of Fiesta Norma Escárcega and Junior Spirit Eve Flores carry with them to the stage. It’s been a year of milestones for Escárcega. Besides the Spirit coronation, she graduated from San Marcos High School as their senior class vice president with AP and honors classes under her belt. The Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Center volunteer and future probation officer hopeful has danced flamenco for 15 years. “It is definitely an honor,” Escárcega said of the Spirit title. She hopes she can be a role model to other dancers, showing they “can be true to who they are, no matter the style of dance or personality. When you dance with passion and love, you can accomplish anything.” Spirit of Fie

For Flores, the Junior Spirit life has been very exciting. “I’m super excited to go place to place, to take it all in and learn what I can accomplish at Fiesta,” said the ambitious 5th grader, an environmentally conscious Hope School student who enjoys spelling bees and math competitions. “I know there’s so much in store for me.” She spent her first three years of school in Mexico, where she learned ballet, hip-hop, jazz, and more, but found the perfect fit in flamenco when she moved here in 3rd grade. Flores says she loves dancing because “I can express myself without using words and share my personality onstage,” and hopes she can inspire young dancers like herself.“If you try your hardest,” she said,“you can get it, no matter what.” — Richie DeMaria

honda Ledson henderson, La Presidente of 2017’s Old Spanish Days, vividly remembers the Fiesta parades of her youth. “My parents said it was my birthday party,” laughed the August baby. “They were really good storytellers—and really cheap.” They were right, in a way, too: Henderson would remain very close to Fiesta in the years to come. A lifelong lover of Fiesta history and lore whose family can count multiple generations in California — her father’s side arrived as immigrants and established a dairy farm on Rancho Los Osos — Henderson takes on the role of La Presidente after serving for 10 years on the Old Spanish Days Board. “It is truly an honor,” she said of the title. For Henderson, Fiesta is all about togetherness, emphasizing this year’s theme, Unity Through Community, or Unidos en Comunidad. “Fiesta truly is a community event — it takes more than 4,000 volunteers and over 40 nonprofits, and it couldn’t happen without them,” she said, citing everyone from the dancers to the police personnel who make it all happen. Mentioning the generous spirit of the late Father Virgil Cordano,
