and there are hardwood floors throughout. Since the living space is all upstairs, you look down on your neighbors, with mountain views as a backdrop, for an almost treehouse feel. Completing the grown-up dorm-room atmosphere is the huge oversized garage. This space is just begging to be used as a massive playroom, the perfect open office space for your startup, or to fulfill your creative fantasies as an art studio for collaborating with your housemates.
The backyard is fenced high enough to be completely private, with a roomsized patio and a grassy area ready for a game of horseshoes while you wait for the barbecue. The location of this home is perfect, too. You’re on the very edge of the Westside, offering a quick hop onto the freeway or a straight shot to the beach in a couple of different directions. Whether you all walk downtown together or go your separate ways for the day, you’ll be happy to be back home with your besties at the end of the day. 1219 Chino Street is currently for sale in Santa Barbara, listed by Vickie Craig and Sharon Fisher of Village Properties. Walking through 1219 Chino Street, I could almost feel Chandler or Joey lurking in the next room. This home is billed as a condo but sure doesn’t feel like one. We enter through a dramatic foyer with a winding staircase up into the main room, which is a huge combination kitchen and great room with soaring ceilings and a commanding feel. This is where the family — or in my fantasy, the friends — would congregate. Unless they’re sleeping, they’re hanging out right here. The home has four bedrooms and three full bathrooms. Each bedroom feels like a master, with plenty of space and separation from the others. By Santa Barbara standards, this home is brand-spanking-new, built in 2006, but feels solid and has quality treatments and amenities. The bathrooms are beautifully tiled with well-chosen fixtures. The kitchen has custom built-ins,

t’s not just me. I’m sure plenty of us have had conversations with our best friends at various stages in our lives that revolved around moving in together and pursuing our various dreams while coming home at the end of the day to our cozy common living space. We would compare notes on our separate professional escapades while preparing elaborate meals together. We would hang out in our living room enjoying our collaboratively amassed entertainment equipment. We would play games in our dream rec room together. We would envision the perfect combination family-yet-all-grown-up lifestyles. These fantasies were fueled by Friends and plenty of other TV shows where the buddies all bunk together.

Downtown santa barbara Area Description
Santa Barbara sizzles with a unique mix of big-city cosmopolitanism and smalltown hospitality, and downtown is the epicenter of this culture, where you can eat at a world-class restaurant, walk a few minutes to catch the opera or a rock concert, and see 10 of your best friends along the way. The city offers the widest array of housing options, from mansions on the Upper Eastside to modest single-family homes and affordable condos, all within a 15-minute walk of good food, great entertainment, historic landmarks, and a vast mix of retail shopping options.

Around the Area
When the Spanish colonists arrived to establish the Santa Barbara Mission and Presidio in the late 1700s, they found the Chumash people enjoying one of the West Coast’s most thriving native economies and cultures. Santa Barbara quickly became one of New Spain’s most important cities, and the unique mix of Spanish, Mexican, and Yankee cultures gave rise to the Californio lifestyle. As such, a reverence for a shared history that is unrivaled by other West Coast towns runs through the soul of Santa Barbara, where the traditions and styles of yesteryear are beloved. The city would have probably become just another Southern California beach town with traditional Craftsman and Victorian architecture were it not for the earthquake of 1925. With much of the town decimated, civic leaders decided to rebuild with a Spanish Colonial theme, giving rise

The bulk of residents live on the grid of streets that make up downtown Santa Barbara, which runs roughly from the Mission down to the waterfront, cradled by the Eastside and Westside neighborhoods, and with the Mesa and Riviera districts rising higher in elevation on the edges. Home to an eclectic array of restaurants and bars, numerous theaters and performing-arts venues of all sizes, and a lively energy usually reserved for cities 10 times the size, downtown Santa

Barbara forms the heart of coastal California culture, a place where cultural sophistication meets small-town life. Given the iconic setting and history as a gathering place for the Chumash, Spanish, and Yankee settlers, it’s no wonder that Santa Barbara is home to so many annual parties. There’s the vividly colorful Solstice Parade every June; the five dancing, eating, and drinking days and nights of Old Spanish Days Fiesta each August; and a major civic event nearly every month, from the renowned Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February to Earth Day in April to the holiday parades on land and sea in December. Santa Barbara also boasts the best weather on the planet, never getting much hotter than 85 degrees and never much cooler than 65. Because of that, the city attracts people involved in active, healthy lifestyles, so expect to see countless joggers, bicycle riders, and other outdoor sports enthusiasts throughout the region. It’s also a hotbed for the farm-to-table movement, and many residents strive to live as sustainable, local, and organic a life as possible, made easy by multiple Farmers Markets weekly. Being surrounded by an amazing wine country and lively agricultural community doesn’t hurt either.

riginally built by renowned architect Peter Barber at the corner of Micheltorena and Anacapa streets, which was far outside of downtown Santa Barbara at the time, this church housed four different congregations in three different locations. First was St. Mark’s, a spin-off of Trinity Episcopal, but then they ran out of money. So in came the First Baptists until they outgrew the space in 1910, followed by the Seventh-day Adventists, who moved the building to De la Vina and Anapamu. It survived the quake of 1925, then the Adventists moved it to 2020 Chapala in 1932, taking over a lot that was once part of Flying A Studios. That church remained the owner until 1964, when the Central Church of Christ moved in. Next came a series of secular owners—including current owners Patricia and Richard Levee, who began leasing to McDermott-Crockett Mortuary in 2010. “With offices located conveniently in the back and the beautiful chapel functioning as the business’s storefront, not a day goes by when we don’t find ourselves overwhelmed by the sheer awesomeness of the chapel’s idiosyncrasies,” says the McDermott-Crockett website. “The regally preserved arches in the main hall frame a breathtaking display of light which pours through the stained-glass windows in the afternoon, filling the entire chapel with a deluge of warm and peaceful rose-colored light. The place truly glows when touched by the sun.”

Prynce Hopkins was born in 1885. While attending Ojai’s Thacher School, he demonstrated his fascination for the new flying machines by designing a working model for a helicopter. He earned degrees from London University, Yale, and Columbia and spoke five languages. Hopkins loved to travel, and he became deeply interested in Asia and eastern philosophies. In 1913, he returned to Santa Barbara to open a boy’s school. Purchasing 13 acres on Mission Ridge, he built a large Swiss chalet, surrounded by vegetable gardens and a working miniature railway with a 200-pound locomotive. Hopkins was one of the earliest practitioners of the Montessori method of education. He felt play was just as important in the learning process as classroom work. Students attended class from 6 to 11 a.m. and spent the rest of the day in various pursuits, usually outdoors. As enrollment grew, Hopkins began to look for a new site to allow for expansion. In 1915, Hopkins bought 32 acres above Oak Park, where the Samarkand complex is now, and built his new school. Many of the buildings were done in a Persian architectural style. Riding stables, a fully equipped gym, formal gardens—all were built with the idea of the importance of
outdoor activities in mind. The outstanding feature of the grounds was the 1.5-acre artificial lake with a topographic map of the world. The continents had volcanoes that belched smoke and running rivers. Students could climb into a raft or rowboat and sail across the Pacific to San Francisco Bay or sail from New York to the Mediterranean in shipping lanes mapped out with wire. The boys, in effect, took part in a living geography lesson. Opening in 1917, the innovative school was short-lived. Hopkins was a confirmed pacifist, an unpopular view especially when the U.S. entered in World War I. In April 1918, Hopkins was jailed and fined $20,000 under the Espionage Act for written works that purportedly gave aid to the enemy. One of his books, titled More Prussian Than Prussia, decried the U.S. penchant to enter the war and criticized what he perceived to be an erosion of civil liberty in this country. Hopkins’s stance spelled the end of Boyland. In 1918, the grounds were used as an emergency hospital during the deadly influenza epidemic. Prynce’s mother shortly thereafter transformed the school into the Samarkand Hotel, thus giving the surrounding neighborhood its name. Hopkins spent a number of years teaching in Europe and traveling, but he eventually returned to Santa Barbara. He lived in the family home until 1956, when he built a house in the International style at 1920 Garden Street. A founding member of the American Civil Liberties Union and the local United Nations chapter, Hopkins remained active until his death in 1970, celebrating his 85th birthday that year with a trip around the world.

his house at 1900 Garden Street was home for many years to Prynce Hopkins. His father, Charles, had the house built in 1897 as a summer home for the family. Charles was from San Francisco and was a major stockholder in the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Francis Wilson, architect of the city’s train depot, originally designed the house. Mrs. Hopkins had the house redone in the popular Spanish-Colonial style in 1931.

in many of its flowers. It is the bromeliad family, of which the most famous member is the familiar pineapple Ananas comosus. This is not to say that all members of the family have gaudily hued inflorescences. There are groups of gray-leaved species, such as Dyckia that have monochromatic orange (suitable for Halloween) flowers. The fairly common (often on offer at supermarkets and discount houses) Aechmea fasciata, gets a little more outrageous with a truly astounding flower stalk bristling with spiny bracts the color of strawberry ice cream, this inflorescence will eventually support dozens of tiny tubular flowers. Each flower pushes its way out from among the scurfy bracts, at first a clear red bud that expands and fades to violet That’s just one scenario; black, lapis, verdigris, chromium yellow, and scarlet are just as likely in the fantastic blossoms of other species in this genus. Not only are their flowers composed of a series of colorful structures, but their leaves may vary from the deepest maroon to grass green and Puya alpestris sport stripes and spots of gold or red or purple. The genus Vriesea also employs both mottled and striped leaves as well as some awesome flower spikes. The bracts carry the show, supporting mostly pale yellow flowers. Other genera such as the family’s namesake Bromelia have nondescript flowers, but the center of each plant may turn fire-engine red when in bloom. Popular as potted plants, as well as in the landscape, are colorful members of Neoregelia. Instead of lifting their flowers aloft, these plants form a “tank” around the inflorescence. This tank is designed to catch rainwater and house the tiny blue-violet flowers. The modest flowers are not what draw a crowd of potential pollinators, but with their bases ranging in shades of pale pink through scarlet and purple, the enticement remains. A third group of bromeliads inhabit some pretty unforgiving country high in the Andes Mountains. These terrestrial species are covered with silvery trichomes that snatch whatever moisture is to be had and reflect the harsh rays of the sun to protect against sunburn and keep the plants cooler. Of these, the genus Puya is the most widely known in horticulture, and there are some stunning examples to grow. Puya alpestris is one such species. It forms a rosette of spiny-edged leaves that can be several feet across, from which a spectacular flower stalk rises. Hundreds of tubular flowers in the wildest iridescent shade of green-blue open a few at a time over a period of weeks. So prolific is the nectar production of these flowers that the sweet stuff literally drips from the plant. Many bromeliads grow happily in our area either as potted plants or in garden beds. Most nurseries won’t have a big selection, but there are specialty nurseries and mail-order sources available online. The Bromeliad Society International web pages (bsi.org) bsi.org) have lots more information about their natural history and culture, too. bsi.org
