I
f you’ve driven the coast route from Santa Barbara to the Santa Ynez Valley in the past 10 years, then you’ve seen this house. Past Refugio and Gaviota beaches, through the famous tunnel featured in The Graduate, and just past the Highway 1 turnoff to Lompoc, sits a very distinctive log home on the southbound side of the freeway. If you get to Nojoqui Falls, you’ve gone a bit too far. But don’t worry, for it’s a friendly portion of the road with plenty to do and see as you make your U-turn. There’s a blueberry farm where you can pick your own berries and an organic farm stand that allows people to pay for their produce using the honor system. Once I got myself onto the correct side of the freeway, I approached the log arch entryway with a sense of déjà vu. Although I hadn’t actually been inside the gate before, I’d driven past so many times that it felt familiar. A rusted classic Ford truck was perched in a meadow with a group of cattle posing picturesquely in the distance. The road forked in front of me, so I paused to take in this welcoming scene, and also to decide which way to proceed. A large house sits off to the right, with a still impressive but relatively smaller house to the left. Up the sloping hill before me, in the center of the compound, is an even larger house. All of these buildings are constructed of huge logs. To call them log cabins is misleading. Even the smallest house is closer in size to a mansion than to any cabin I’ve ever seen. I decide that the largest house, in the center of the property at the top of the hill, must be the main house, or at least the proper place to start. The exterior of these houses is impressive from afar but even more remarkable up close. I learn that the logs are red cedar, and they are massive. The home’s owner is the founder of Pioneer Log Homes of British Columbia, a company that brought traditional Norwegian artistry and construction techniques into the modern era, building log homes around the world. This estate was built both as his own home and as a showplace for the company and their craft. The unique style and craftsmanship is evident in every corner of every room. Walking into the foyer of the main house, I’m greeted by a dramatic open living room flanked by two curving stairways leading up to the second floor. The centerpiece of the living room is a double-sided fireplace constructed of natural river

Its beautiful log construction is similar to the main house, with deep eaves and dormer windows. The interior is currently empty— a large shell that can be used for weddings empty or other events. The barn was built with the option to install a second floor, which means it could be turned into even more living space. At this point, I started thanking my hosts for the tour, thinking I had seen everything. The more than 7,000-square-foot main house, with its attached studio, garage and gym, wine cave, barn, guesthouse, and even outhouse, was all more than I had expected. But when my tour guide asked if I wanted to jump in the jeep and go for a ride up the hill to see the cabin, how could I say no?
ing room below. On one side is the master suite with a kiva fireplace inlaid with rocks that I’m told are some of the oldest rocks in North America. The master bath has elaborate tilework and curved alcoves, an exceptionally deep shower, and a freestanding tub on a raised tiled platform with a stunning view of the hills behind the house. In addition to the other bedroom suite upstairs, there is a separate studio with its own outside exit stairway. Behind the house, across a lush level backyard, is an amazing wine cave built into the side of the hill. It is a large, dramatic space with a cool, cave-like interior that feels as if you’ve stepped into a wine cellar in an 18thcentury French countryside. Walking around to the front of the house, I learn that the other buildings I sized up on my way in are a guesthouse on the right and a barn on the left. At almost 1,000 square feet, the guesthouse is a cozy miniature version of the main house. Another separate structure near the guesthouse is an outhouse. The owners were tired of cattle backing into the Porta-Potties during construction of the estate, so they went to the trouble and
It took us a good 10 minutes to get up the hill, bumping uphill over a dirt road behind the main house. This was an adventure I hadn’t anticipated but thoroughly enjoyed. When I asked how far the property extended, the answer was virtually as far as I could see. At the top of the mountain, on a flat clearing with an almost 360-degree view, sits the cabin. With no running water or electricity, but a fireplace and a split-rail fence encircling the front yard, the cozy cabin is more rustic than anything else on the estate. It’s much more reminiscent of the image that comes to mind when I think of a “log cabin.” Not only is the cabin adorable, but it also has a view of Nojoqui Falls, the mountains, and, on a clear day, the ocean, which is only four miles away. The new owner of this 360-acre property will have options galore. It already sports a vineyard and cattle, and there’s plenty of room for more of either or both. On the way back down the hill to the main house, the owner pointed out a rare double-trunked oak tree. Two trees had entwined together and become one as they grew. She said that people love the rare tree, and couples seek it out to use it as a backdrop for wedding photos. It seems fitting that on this estate built to showcase marvelous log homes that are both feats of architecture and works of art, this naturally wonderful tree clamors for attention, as well.

T
his summer, temperatures in Santa Barbara have been moderate, but the rest of the country has seen scorching weather, hitting record highs. Given the trends, at some point we,, too, will be knocked out of our mild comfort zone. Since most of us have limited tolerance for hot weather, and since air conditioning consumes a lot of electricity, it is important to first consider natural strategies when seeking ways to cool a building. Architects and builders have largely stopped using these techniques over the past 100 years, but because they utilize simple approaches to cooling, they save both energy and money. Breezes help moisture evaporate from one’s skin—one of the body’s main methods for cooling off. In fact, many natural cooling techniques boil down to one basic principle: Keep air moving. Funneling our afternoon breezes through our buildings (predominately from the southwest in Santa Barbara) is ideal for cooling. It is possible to optimize the channeling of these breezes through our buildings by carefully choosing the type and location of windows and doors. Casement windows offer maximum ventilation for a given glass area while also providing ways to catch and direct airflow. Openings through opposite exterior walls create maximum air currents, namely cross ventilation. Openings in adjacent walls proby Dennis Allen duce air turbulence, which also enhances cooling. A combination of small, low inlets and larger outlets achieves the best and fastest indoor air movement. A size ratio of 1:3 between inlets and outlets increases the speed of air movement by two and a half times (the Bernoulli principle). The effectiveness of ventilation can be further enhanced by pre-cooling the air before it enters the home. Trees can both shade windows and cool the afternoon air currents. Deciduous trees are best, because they shed their leaves in winter to allow the sun and its warmth in. Almost any vegetation between a building and the approaching breezes will cool the air as the plants release water vapor through transpiration. Moisture evaporating from a pond or fountain or supplied by a mister also removes heat from air. Trellises, building overhangs, and awnings are simple yet effective strategies for keeping a building cool by limiting solar gain. Exterior shade screens prevent direct sunlight from striking a window. Awnings block light and heat, whereas shade screens allow some light through. Shade screens are lightweight, durable, and inexpensive and can block between 50 and 90 percent of the sun’s heat directed toward a window. Most often they are motorized for optimum sun control. Awnings are similarly most effective when motorized. Another consideration is a building’s color. Dark-colored exteriors absorb 70-90 percent of the sun’s radiant energy, some of which is transferred into the exterior walls resulting in heat gain. In contrast, light-colored surfaces reflect most of the heat away. Dennis Allen is chair of Allen Construction, an employee-owned company committed to building and operating sustainably. The event was overflowing with legends, with Peter MacDougall, Sara Miller McCune, and Roger Durling presenting the awards; Andrew Firestone as master of ceremonies; Anne Towbes and Gretchen Lieff as event cochairs; and many other notables in attendance. Exceptional performances Honoree Christopher Lloyd accepts his award. were sprinkled throughout this magical evening starting with the Dos Pueblos Jazz Singers during the welcome reception in the foyer. Many guests mingled at an extended VIP reception in the elegant Founders Room before passing through the theater where the Santa Barbara Choral Society performed. Guests then stepped onto the stage, which had been transformed into an exquisite dining venue. A round, elevated mini-stage was created in the center of the space, giving an intimate theater-in-the-round experience for performances by State Street Ballet and Opera Santa Barbara. Firestone effortlessly rose to the challenge of hosting in all directions, aided by a giant video screen projecting the always charming “Bachelor” throughout the space. From another stage, the Santa Barbara Symphony performed and the honorees were presented with their awards. Irma and Morrie Jurkowitz, former owners of the Granada, have contributed to the theater in countless ways, including giving $5 million for the theater’s restoration campaign and establishing the Jurkowitz Center for Community Engagement. The largest program of the center is the Community Access Ticket Program, which gives tickets to nonprofits serving price-sensitive groups including youth, seniors, and veterans. The nonprofit sells the tickets at significantly reduced prices to those it serves and gets to keep the proceeds from the ticket sales. The next honoree, UCSB Arts & Lectures, has been bringing world-class performing artists and leading thinkers to the Granada and other venues for more than 50 years. Christopher Lloyd, a longtime Santa Barbara resident, was honored for his large, outstanding body of acting work, which includes the Back to the Future trilogy and the TV Opera Santa Barbara performs. series Taxi.

his Victorian with gentle elements of Colonial Revival architecture has been well maintained and undergone few cosmetic and structural alterations in its 118-year history. The builder was W.L. Pierson, a turn-of-the-century carpenter, and the probable original owner was Henry Spencer, who was known locally as a capitalist among his peers. By 1917, the estate was transferred to Herman Menken, a distributor of wine and spirits. The property remained with his family for the next 52 years. Since the Menken era, the dwelling has housed additional owners and commercial enterprises, including a dual-use antique store on the ground floor, with an owner apartment on the second and attic levels. Beginning in 1999, the restored Victorian was christened the Country House Inn, a supplemental bed and breakfast to its sister hotel across the street and a half-block away, the Upham Hotel (founded in 1871 by Amasa Lincoln, a cousin to the 16th president of the United States), which is known to be the oldest continuously operating hotel in Southern California. The Country House Inn offers seven unique guest rooms and an intimate penthouse suite, each individually decorated in colorful thematic styles with classic antiques and period furnishings.
