CHARMING MONTECITO FARMHOUSE

’lladmit it. Sometimes multimillion-dollar homes scare me a little bit, in the same way that sitting down to an ü über-gourmet meal with mysterious utensils and unfamiliar ingredients can slide me slightly out of my comfort zone. (Do I sip it? Or dip my bread in it?) There are some occasions when I pull up to a ritzy address, walk up to what I hope is the front door, and step into a building that feels more like a museum than a home sweet home. I can appreciate the finer things in life, but for me, a home has to be relaxed enough that you don’t have to tiptoe. This was going through my mind as I drove toward a particular Montecito address last week, unsure of what awaited me. I was delighted to discover that 1401 East Pepper Lane in Montecito is not one of those museum-like abodes. As soon as I walked through the front gate, I knew that this house was about to capture my heart. It’s a farmhouse, built in the late 1800s, with a main house and a separate cottage facing each other across a wide, grassy front-entry area. A huge California redwood tree, surrounded by clumps of puffy pampas grass, sits between the two houses, just begging to be climbed. Gravel paths meander between and around both buildings. There’s just enough space and distance that grandma could live quite contentedly in her dower cottage yet walk up the path to visit as often as she pleased. The cottage has myriad charming details to admire— starting with its red Dutch door—yet I fell in love with its overall simplicity. The adorable front door opens into a combination living and bedroom with whitewashed wood walls

hile festive architectural trimmings of the 1880s gave way to the fantasy-inspired Victorian movement, the next building genre soon caught on and quickly became a nationwide shift toward a more simplified approach in American living. The craftsman era emphasized nostalgia of the frontier, juxtaposed with the rising “middleclass” society, ultimately producing warm and inviting residences. Designed less ornate than their predecessors, these homes were typically one to two stories. In addition, craftsman homes offered the generous use of earth-friendly building materials including softwoods, tile, and natural stone. During this time, a number of journals originated, including The Craftsman magazine and Ladies’ Home Journal. In addition, there were several notable architects to emerge from the craftsman era, which included Frank Lloyd Wright, Bernard Maybeck, Gustav Stickley, and the Greene brothers of Pasadena. This Valerio Street residence, mostly of square configuration, was believed to have been built in the first part of the 20th century. It is estimated that the third owner of the home was Catherine Ladtilade, who reminisced her childhood memories while being interviewed by the Santa Barbara Historical Society when she was still living. In documented notes, Ms. Ladtilade stated that her family moved into the home around 1918, and as a child, she made items for use in World War I. She also recalled the builder’s name “was something like Stanton, and his family lived in the ‘barn’ while the house was being built.” Over the years, the property has been well maintained and presently stands as a hallmark to a bygone time.

n December 15, members and guests of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara celebrated at the club’s holiday party held at the new Viva restaurant, former home of Cielito. The serious rain and cold weather did not deter this enthusiastic group from gathering for some good holiday cheer. After the reception in Viva’s private dining room, Club Service Director Pamela Galvin and President Jim Stretchberry welcomed the guests and invited them to enjoy the buffet dinner. While cocktails featured traditional red and white sangria, the meal was classic and creative American cuisine with roast turkey and mashed potatoes offered alongside parmesan- and herb-crusted sea bass. There are several Rotary Clubs in the area, but the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara is the region’s original club. It dates back to 1918 and currently has 110 members. Rotary is a service organization with members committed to volunteering their time and making financial contributions to worthy causes in their own community and internationally. Also, members enjoy networking and social activities. For the past four years, the club’s major international effort has been to assist Maya families in Guatemala through an annual trip made by club members. Working with the nonprofit organization Mayan Families, members have built homes, installed safe and efficient stoves for cooking and heating, and provided water filters. A team of 13 went last year; eight are signed up so far this year. In the Santa Barbara community, the biggest program is the annual Foster Care Holiday Giving Program. Through the county, Rotary obtains a wish list from teens residing in individual or group foster homes. This year, Rotary purchased $3,000 worth of gifts for 40 foster teens. For many of them, these gifts will be the only ones they receive. Other club activities include donating books and other supplies to schools, running blood drives, and participating in bell ringing with the Salvation Army. Also, through its Charitable Foundation, Rotary donates internationally and to regional organizations serving children, the disabled, and low-income people. The Charitable Foundation provides scholarships to high school students, as well.

Leopard lacewing (Cethosia cyane)

Of Moths, Butterflies, and Cap’n Crunch

T

he other morning, I walked into my bathroom, and on the vanity next to the sink was a moth the size of a small Buick. Okay, not that big, but, well, for a moth it was pretty darn big. I left it undisturbed but kept a wary eye on it as I stuck my head under the faucet to get ready for work. As I toweled off my noggin, my guest raised up its wings and began to vibrate. I decided to finish drying off in the other room in order to give the thing some privacy. Being of a curious nature, especially regarding all things that crawl, fly, or slither, I began to wonder, “What’s the difference between a moth and a butterfly, anyway?” I always figured that moths liked to eat your sweaters and butterflies were lovely to look at. I finished slurping up the yellow-orange milk that remained long after my Cap’n Crunch had left the bowl and went to Google my moth-versus-butterfly question. I also wondered if that suspicious, radioactive carrot-y color in my cereal bowl ever actually occurs in nature. I would Google that another time. Some online detective work helped me to determine that the bug on my bathroom sink was probably Manduca quinquemaculata, or, rather, the flying adult moth version of the tomato hornworm. It’s also known as a hummingbird or hawk moth. And, I discovered that although there are similarities between moths and butterflies, there are also differences. And to make matters a little confusing, there are also exceptions. Both moths and butterflies belong to the scientific order Lepidoptera, which means “scalewinged,” referring to the powdery scales that come off on your fingers when you handle one of these creatures. Similarly, moths and butterflies both begin their lives as caterpillars before morphing into the adult, winged versions of themselves. As for the differences (and remember, there are exceptions), here are a few: • • • • •

Butterflies are generally larger and are available in fashion colors, while moths are smaller and usually come in drab shades of brown or beige. A butterfly’s antennae are club-shaped with a long shaft and a bulb at the end. A moth’s are feathery or saw-edged. Butterflies are diurnal, meaning they fly around during the day. Since moths are nocturnal, they like to run suicide missions into your lightbulbs, lit candles, and your computer screen, especially when you’re watching a horror movie on Netflix. Butterflies fold their wings vertically over their backs, while moths hold their wings in a tent-like fashion. A butterfly changes over from a caterpillar inside of a hard, smooth chrysalis. Moths spin a silk-like cocoon.

But because my space is limited and there’s lots more to know about these flying wonders (including those exceptions), I suggest you get out your magnifying glass and your computer, as I did, and look further. Incidentally, I discovered that there are vast amounts written about Cap’n Crunch. Oh, and the color? Yellow dye #5 and yellow dye #6. Perfectly natural. n

Mobility, Waste, and Greenery in Paris

E

nhanced mobility, with the main emphasis on public transit, is a central aspect of the Batignolles eco-district in Paris. Two metro lines—including an extension to one of the city’s main existing lines—two commuter train lines, a tramway line, and 13 bus linkages serve the neighborhood. The new Martin Luther King Park, rather than just being a destination, opens to all the surrounding areas with its crisscrossing of foot and bike paths, thus shortening the distances between neighborhoods and public transit. The park was given top priority and was thus completed first to get locals used to making it a part of their daily routines. Throughout Paris, policies and programs are making it easier and more desirable to get around by means other than car. The district has an innovative waste-collection system, an underground network of pneumatic pipes that automatically removes household, business, and public-area waste (except glass), thereby reducing the number of refuse containers and trash trucks and the amount of greenhouse-gas emissions, the latter by 42 percent. In lieu of hundreds of refuse trucks collecting throughout the area, the system needs just four. The entire project is to be carbon neutral with a constant and rigorous monitoring of results. In spite of the density, greenery is given a high priority: Buildings are allowed to be 35 percent taller than the maximum limit in Paris, creating smaller footprints which, in turn, allow better views and more green space. Abundant greenery —located in the central park in green spaces shared around and between buildings, on rooftops, and covering green walls —is purposefully laid out for human pleasure and well-being, as well as biodiversity, and to reduce the heat-island effect. Only 12 percent of the district’s total surface area is covered by impervious pavement, and rainwater is collected and filtered by Dennis Allen on-site with the help of green roofs and wetlands. The composite of plants acts as a veritable urban “air conditioner” due to the shade of the trees and the natural phenomenon of evapotranspiration generated by the plants, which is further enhanced by sprinkler water, ponds, fountains, and kiddie-play-area water jets creating even more water vapor to cool the ambient air. This is the first I have heard of engaging nature’s processes on an urban neighborhood scale to offset anticipated, increasingly frequent heat waves due to climate change. The district even has several “heavy industries,” but they are carefully located with rigorous operating conditions. The goal is to take advantage of the rail lines to curb heavy truck traffic in the city. A freight center will receive mostly foodstuffs coming in by rail and distribute these products to neighborhood stores and restaurants around Paris by electric vehicles. Another industry, a concrete plant, will use rail links to transport aggregates from distant quarries, thus avoiding the use of 10,000 trucks a year.

Dennis Allen is chair of Allen Construction, an employee-owned company committed to building and operating sustainably. He also serves as chair of the Dean’s Council at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UCSB and as a boardmember of the Community Environmental Council.
