I
Remodeled Home on the Westside
t was a great Christmas at our house. I feel extremely fortunate that both of my kids were able to come home for the holidays this year. I use the terms “kids” and “home” fairly liberally. The kids are 26- and 28-year-old adults, and neither of them has lived in Santa Barbara full-time for more than five years. Yet somehow, they were able to arrange work schedules and girlfriends and other commitments to make it back for a holiday visit. While they were here, we had plenty of friends and family to see and favorite places to visit. Somehow one of the first meals of every trip back home needs to be a burrito from Cuca’s. We bundled up and sat outside of the West Micheltorena Street restaurant and doused our various super burrito creations with squeeze-bottle salsas as we caught up and compared notes in a pre-Christmas carne feast. A few days later, I drove to visit an open house at 519 West Islay Street. As I got close, I realized that my destination was walking distance to Cuca’s in the vibrant and very selfcontained Westside neighborhood. Grocery stores, Laundromats, clothing stores, a bakery, plenty of restaurants, and even a hardware store are all within the main corridor of what’s known as Santa Barbara’s Westside. Both vehicle and pedestrian bridges connect the Westside to downtown, and the additional conveniences of the Mesa and the beach are right next door. Islay Street lies between Pedregosa and Valerio streets. Also falling between San Pascual and the freeway, 519 West Islay has little Thomas Avenue around the corner acting as a one-block buffer. This house is therefore almost on a corner, but not quite, and almost next to the railroad tracks, but not quite. The result is a sunny street on the quiet part of the Westside on a nice block without much traffic. A quintessential white picket fence surrounds 519 West Islay, working its charms before I even walk through the front door. The home is a 1930s craftsman, painted a combination blue color scheme that on this day happens to perfectly match the winter sky. A brick pathway and two steps lead up to the front porch and into the house. The left side of this home consists of a large living room with a big white brick fireplace along one wall and an archway into a dining area, with the kitchen beyond. It’s a very open and
airy room, presenting a much more spacious first impression than many houses from the same era. On the right side of the house, two of the bedrooms and bathrooms lie off a hallway. The first bedroom benefits from bay windows on the front of the house and additional windows on the side, so it is both bright and charming. The character and shape of the bay windows make this front bedroom my favorite, even though it’s neither the largest nor most well-appointed of the bedrooms. Walking toward the back of the house, past the second bedroom and bathrooms, you can walk to the left into the kitchen or continue to the back bedroom. The kitchen is serviceable, not fancy, but large enough for a breakfast area. Dining in the kitchen would leave other options for the additional space in the living room if the new owner chose not to have a separate formal dining room. There is a large laundry room off the kitchen, as well, which is a bonus not often found in similar homes. The back bedroom shows off the versatility of this home’s R-3 zoning. It is self-contained, with an en suite bathroom and French doors providing a separate entrance out to the backyard. The large backyard is enclosed by a tall wooden fence. It’s a fairly empty open space, providing a blank canvas with plenty of room for outdoor dining, gardens, or play equipment. A completely separate fenced side yard is perfect for a dog run. The house at 519 West Islay still retains the charm of its craftsman heritage, but it has been remodeled and enlarged to provide additional convenience and versatility. Priced under $800,000, and with its R-3 zoning offering the option of rental income, it is arguably one of the more affordable properties on the market. I’m not sure if it was the nostalgia for my recent holiday visit with the boys or the fact that the lunch hour was near, but my stomach suddenly reminded me that Cuca’s was nearby, which might be this home’s most tempting selling point in my book.
519 West Islay Street is currently for sale in Santa Barbara, listed by Bryan Munoz of Santa Barbara Realty. Reach Bryan at 284-5794 or bryansbrealty@gmail.com.

This single level home is located on the prestigious Harbor Hills Lane of the Mesa neighborhood. The pride of ownership is evident through its pristine condition, charming character, and mature hedges. 20 West Valerio street T
his Italianate Victorian house and its three neighbors to the west along Valerio Street are some of the few remaining architectural representations of Santa Barbara in the Victorian era. The presumed original owner was Clara W. Lunt, an artist who lived in the home from 1888 until the early 1920s. The home, which is built from redwood, has undergone very few exterior changes over the decades and so appears very frozen in time. That sense is often enhanced by the interior decorations that can be seen from the curb, which tend to match the home’s classical sense of style. Inside, three of the five fireplaces were designed to burn coal rather than wood. Among other interesting architectural features, 20 West Valerio Street features a truncated hipped roof with overhanging boxed eaves and double-story squaredroom projections on the front and right sides. The open front porch is supported by wooden posts and decorated by brackets, while a large bay window extends from the left side of the first floor. Denticulate frieze molding separates the first and second stories, and the windows are double hung, often with three-pane transforms. In 1939, the home was converted into a duplex, according to available records, and in 1950, apartments were built in the backyard. That’s probably the biggest change to this centrally located property, for the backyard was once home to a barn and cistern.

Who founded Lompoc?
n the fall of 1874, the Lompoc Valley Land Company, a joint stock company formed under the auspices of the California Immigrant Union, founded the town of Lompoc. The prime mover behind this enterprise was a transplanted New Yorker named W.W. Broughton. Broughton, lawyer and journalist, arrived in California in 1859. A teetotaler, Broughton had dreams of beginning a liquor-free community. Broughton headed a small committee to seek out a suitable site and settled upon the Lompoc Valley. The derivation of the name “Lompoc” is a little unclear. Most likely, it is a form of a Chumash word meaning “lake.” During the Mexican era, the valley formed part of two land-grant ranchos, Lompoc and Mission Vieja de la Purísima. In 1863, a partnership consisting of brothers William Welles (W.W.) and Hubbard Hollister, brothers Albert and Thomas Dibblee, and Joseph Cooper purchased the two ranchos. Broughton met W.W. Hollister in 1870 and interested him in the idea of a temperance colony. The temperance movement was gaining momentum throughout California in the 1870s. In 1874, the state legislature passed a local option law that allowed communities to decide whether they would be wet or dry. Although the law was soon declared unconstitutional, its passage was testimony to the interest this issue engendered in the public. In September 1874, the Lompoc Valley Land Company purchased the two ranchos. As plans went forward to parcel out and sell the acreage, each deed contained this proviso: “No vinous, malt, spirituous, or other intoxicating liquors shall ever be manufactured or
sold upon any portion of the Lompoc and Mission Vieja Ranchos purchased by this corporation ….” An exception was made for spirits used for medicinal purposes. Some 250 people came to the first sale of land on November 9, 1874. The auctioneer, trailing a red flag, would dash from one tract to another, followed by the crowd of anxious would-be buyers. By day’s end, about $700,000 had changed hands. A square mile of choice land was set aside for the site of the new town of Lompoc. By the end of the year, more than 50 buildings dotted the valley and a newspaper, the Lompoc Record, was in operation, edited by Broughton. By spring of 1875, the town boasted a school and a post office, and by the first anniversary of that first land sale, the colony was home to some 200 families. The general consensus was that there was enough river and well water to support a town of 25,000, but a drought in 1877 almost brought the new city to its knees. One early settler later recalled feeding her horse her straw mattress to keep the beast alive. Keeping Lompoc liquor-free proved no easy task, for there were always those who wanted their liquid refreshment. In August 1875, a group of ax-wielding women barged into a drugstore that was surreptitiously selling liquor and smashed every alcohol container they could find. In 1881, another establishment was blown up by persons unknown. Two years later, a vigilante group used ropes to pull down a building in which liquor sales were taking place. The drys were fighting a losing battle, however, and by the early 1900s, the dream of a temperance colony had gone glimmering.
