Make Myself at HOMe
by Sarah Sinclair
Rancho Goleta’s lakeside Homes address: 945 Ward Drive, #73, #93, and #139 status: On the market price: $419,000, $379,000, and $458,222
I
discovered pickles last week. For most of my life, I’ve put pickles at the top of my list of least favorite foods. Every time I ordered a burger, I asked them to “hold the pickles.”While friends were pleased with the pickles that come as an unrequested side with a deli sandwich, my only thought was: “That bothersome green thing better not get any pickle juice on my roast beef and provolone.”
My picky distaste persisted all my years until last week when I tried a pickle, and I liked it. I didn’t just tolerate it. I actually enjoyed its tang and crunch, busting all my preconceived anti-pickle notions. The surprising pickle discovery happened on almost the very same day that I discovered my favorite new neighborhood. Despite my previous prejudices, Rancho Goleta, which is a (gasp!) mobile home park in (double gasp!) Goleta, bowled me over with its peaceful lakeside charm.
Planning one of my usual jaunts to visit open houses, I saw several open homes listed on Ward Drive. Since I’ve only known Ward Memorial as the way to get to UCSB and the airport, I ventured out to take a look. My map led me off the 217 at Hollister, down Ward Drive, and past a cemetery and fields of vegetables growing in between industrial buildings, all with a countrified air of wide-open space. When I got to the entrance to the park, I followed the signs toward the three units that were open to view: 73, 93, and 139. Parking in front of #73, I was impressed with how quiet the entire area felt. The birds chirping was the only sound I heard as I walked up to the front patio. Once inside, it was easy to forget I was in a manufactured home. Bright walls, brandnew carpet, and big windows give an overall impression of a sunny beach cottage. With two bedrooms, two baths, a den, and a separate dining room, this house feels at once comfortable and spacious. Surprises such as a Jacuzzi tub, a cedar-lined closet, and air conditioning wowed me at every turn. Moving on down the street to #93, I found myself in a similarly large home with three bedrooms and two baths that had been updated with granite countertops. The outdoor space has a private fenced backyard and a covered carport with built-in brick barbecue. Huge plantings out front and two brick patios on the other side give this home an air of indoor/outdoor living in keeping with our climate and lifestyle. I drove over to #139. It greeted me with an easy-care front yard of mostly rocks, with steps leading up to a large, felt-covered porch. This unit felt more like what I expected from a mobile home. Stepping inside, I found myself in a huge, open living room, with two bedrooms and two full baths beyond, plus a kitchen and laundry room. By
now, I started seeing similarities in some of the window and closet configurations in all of the homes. I suppose it’s not surprising that these three homes, all of similar era, would have qualities resembling one another. I had been told that there was a lake in the park, so on my way out, I wanted to take a peek. I followed the road as instructed and was delighted to see a small lake in front of me. Looking for a safe spot to park for a minute, I continued on around a bend in the road and was completely taken aback when the entire lakefront came into view. What I had initially thought was the lake was actually just a narrow portion. The vista now in front of me — with a bridge spanning across the lake, ducks swimming near a fountain in the center, and rowboats bobbing next to the waterfront houses across the way — was a scene straight out of an idyllic vacation storybook. Had I not already been completely charmed by Rancho Goleta, this serene scene would have won me over. As sure as sour pickles are my new favorite snack, this sweet mobile home park is my new favorite neighborhood, and its central lake was the icing on the cake.
945 Ward Drive currently has several units for sale. Unit #73 is listed by Dan Failla of Coldwell Banker, #93 is listed by Ian Bentley of The Zia Group at Keller Williams, and #139 is listed by Debbie Law of Sterling Properties. Reach Dan at 708-1276, Ian at 456-3635, and Debbie at 448-9348.

n Saturday, January 21, the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce held its 59th Annual Community Awards Banquet with the theme of “Rolling Out the Red Carpet to Celebrate the Stars of Our Community”— and what a superb celebration it was. A sold-out crowd of 325 community members turned out to see their esteemed fellow Carpinterians receive awards and to enjoy the festivities.

After an extended cocktail hour at the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club, guests were seated for dinner in an elegant dining room dimly lit with crystal-like chandeliers, with tables adorned in formal red and black linens. The basketball hoops made it impossible to fully disguise the gymnasium, but a fine-dining environment was masterfully created. Paul Wright, owner of Island Brewing Company, was named Carpinterian of the Year. Wright is an original member of Thrive, a past president of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria (Noon Club), founding chair of the Carpinteria First Committee, a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, and board president of Faith Lutheran Church, and he is widely known for his company’s incredible generosity over the years. Nominations for this award come from the general public, and the winner is selected by an anonymous committee of community members newly formed each year. Awards were also bestowed on Wright by State Assemblymember Monique Limón, Mayor Fred Shaw, and 1st District Supervisor Das Williams, who thanked Wright for creating a “de facto community center” at Island Brewing. Maria Zamora was named Junior Carpinterian of the Year, an honor that comes with a $4,000 scholarship from the Chamber. The two other finalists, Ana Delgado and Samuel Truax, received $1,500 scholarships from the Chamber. Students apply for the award, and a committee of community members selects the winners. The Small Business award went to accounting firm Meister & Nunes, PC, and the Large Business award to Mission Linen Supply, a Santa Barbara–headquartered company with 2,500 employees in five states. The company, which serves hospitality, medical, and industrial businesses, has supported nearly every nonprofit organization in Carpinteria through linen donations (including at this event), volunteer hours, and sponsorships. It is also in the vanguard in environmental stewardship. Educators of the Year awards went to Brett Weiberg and Curtis Johnson, and the Chamber Ambassador of the Year award was bestowed on Caroline Alarcon. Chamber leadership was symbolically transferred from outgoing Board Chair Michael Ensign to Roland Rotz, who introduced the 2017 Chamber Board. Twenty Carpinterian nonprofits presented a Certificate of Merit Award to an individual they wished to honor. Narration was provided by Donna Lemere and boardmember Curtis Lopez, while a brilliant spotlight illuminated the presenter and awardee at various tables throughout the venue. The evening was a delightful combinaCurtis Johnson, one of two Educators of tion of small-town charm and first-rate show the Year production.

batteries are expensive and basically unproven. I was, however, upbeat about all the efforts taking place to create cost-effective storage. One promising recent development is taking place in Orange County. Southern California Edison has been struggling to respond to the shutdown of the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant and the chaotic energy void its closure left. Edison’s response is to install natural gas plants to fill the void — not a good solution for a carbon-free future. The increase in rooftop solar electric generation creates headaches for utilities: They can’t predict how much energy all these small suppliers will produce or when. It makes it hard for them to balance supply and demand and avoid blackouts. This worry is a key reason California recently decided to require the state’s big utilities to buy more than a thousand megawatts’ worth of energy storage by 2020. One company, Advanced Microgrid Solutions (AMS), is promoting grouping renewables, mostly solar, while employing unique software to manage loads. This guarantees a reduced amount of electricity the utility will have to supply the project. AMS is able to do this by providing storage on the customer side of the meter to reduce and flatten peak demand. The sophisticated tracking and switching software discharges the batteries during the late afternoon or early evening times — times that coincide with the dirtiest and most expensive power the utility generates. The batteries are recharged by fully utilizing solar production or the by Dennis Allen cheapest off-peak utility power. It is the megawatt scale that makes this attractive to the utility. Batteries are still expensive, but when delivering multiple benefits to multiple parties (utilities, customers, and battery investors), they start making economic sense. AMS uses garage-size containers filled with batteries. They now have about 35 megawatts online, with many more soon to be operational. They look for compact projects that can fit an Edison substation area so that the reduced load has the greatest value to the utility. In return, the rates the customer pays have been brought down about 25 percent — a win for everyone. The Santa Barbara region is Edison’s second most worrisome area, as it is remote and is served by antiquated transmission lines. AMS’s approach would be well-suited to reducing this vulnerability, increasing reliability, and saving costs by setting up a project incorporating our desal, water, and sanitation plants. UCSB and even a large grouping of downtown businesses could form other projects of suitable scale. As Mary Nichols, chair of the California Air Resources Board, said, “Reducing demand on the grid instead of adding new peaker plants is the fastest way to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions while improving reliability for customers.”
his L-shaped home is a rarity for Santa Barbara, one of only a handful of residences that remain from the late 1800s designed with the distinguished French-inspired roofline known as Second Empire, also referred to as a Swedish gambrel design. The roofline’s high point runs in both east-to-west and north-to-south configurations and has an upper slope that protrudes outward in shallow context from the center point. Other notable ornamentations include carved wood bargeboards, bay windows, dentils, and filigree porch brackets. In 1858, the land was registered to Bartista Pendola. By 1870, James A. Barker took ownership and quickly made steep investments into land improvements. Between 1872 and 1884, land values for both his and neighboring properties substantially increased. The home was constructed in 1875 for Barker and his family. Subsequent owners were Joseph A. Kenny, an 1880s Santa Barbara “capitalist” and Isaac R. True, another known capitalist who bought the home in 1903. Members of the True family maintained the property until 1955, at which time a small apartment building was constructed in the back part of the lot. Bill Dewey

or a number of years surrounding the start of the 20th century, southern Santa Barbara County was one of the most important walnut-producing regions in the United States. By 1910, the walnut crop was bringing almost $300,000 into area coffers. Although the Spanish introduced the walnut into Alta California, it did not become a crop of much importance until the 1840s, first in the San Diego and then the Los Angeles areas.
