A

s I walked down the street to visit 2115 Gillespie Street last Saturday, a couple was walking two dogs on the opposite side of the street. The dogs were fairly vocal, expressing their feelings loudly as they traipsed along. A man stepped out of his driveway and watched them walk away, keeping an eye on the neighborhood and monitoring the slight fracas until it abated. As I got closer, he said hello and then went back into his yard. It was apparent that there isn’t usually much noise on this street. This neighborly lookout gave me a glimpse into what one might experience in this peaceful area tucked between West Mission Street and Portesuello Avenue, near La Cumbre Junior High School. It’s a little two-block finger west of the actual Westside, full of family homes from the ’60s and ’70s, with a friendly, sleepy neighborhood feel. The home at 2115 Gillespie looks typical from the outside, with an angular sidewalk leading visitors from the driveway and garage across the front lawn and up to the front door, which is actually set on the side of the house.

Its tan stucco and siding façade, with blue shuttered windows and gray shingled roof, are right in keeping with the era and the neighborhood. Walking through the farm-style front door, one enters the living room, a large, bright space with a nicely tiled floor. Because the door is set on the side of the house, the front door and picture window alongside it have a view of the greenery beside the house rather than out onto the street. This creates a sense of privacy and seclusion from the first step into the home. Through the living room lies the dining room straight ahead and kitchen to the right, with a breakfast bar in between. The kitchen has sleek light cabinets and counters, with gleaming stainless-steel and black appliances. Beyond the dining room to the left is a large family-room addition. These three rooms are open to each other but have enough separation to create distinct living spaces. The family room has vaulted wood ceilings and a wood-burning stove, a large window looking straight out to the backyard, and a sliding glass door that leads onto a lattice-covered patio. This is the room where most of the living and relaxing would take place, acting as a bridge between the house itself and the big yard beyond. The yard is completely fenced and has raised vegetable beds, an expansive grassy area, beautiful mature trees, and seating areas for barbecues or entertaining. gnarled bare branches, particularly caught my fancy. Both the front and backyards are large enough to be transformed to fit just about any number of plans and visions — that is, as long as they leave my favorite tree alone. The house has three bedrooms and two baths, with a private fenced patio off the master bedroom. The bedrooms are carpeted, while the dining, kitchen, and family rooms all share the same custom tile flooring as the living room. The two-car garage contains the laundry, just as one would expect from a home of this era. This home has a comfortable, peaceful atmosphere and feels ready to welcome the right new owner, as does the entire neighborhood. As I walked down the pathway to the sidewalk, a dog barked in the distance, but not loud enough to disturb anyone. All was calm again on Gillespie Street.

anti-Defamation league’s SBiFF Opening Night Soirée

L

ast Wednesday, February 1, on the opening night of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) held its own fabulous Opening Night Soirée at Petros Restaurant. At the event, the ADL presented its second annual Stand-Up Award to Strawberry Days, a poignant film written and directed by Wiktor Ericsson about a Polish family working in the strawberry fields in Sweden, where they encounter bias, bullying, and labor exploitation.

Guests strolled ADL’s own red carpet and had their photos taken outside Petros, just across from the Arlington Theatre, where the Opening Night Film was shown later that evening. More than 100 guests mingled in the elegant covered courtyard and inside dining room at Petros and dined on passed hors-d’oeuvres and a succulent buffet of Greek dishes. The casual, unstructured format allowed for plenty of socializing among guests who seemed like a big family, drawn together by ADL’s mission of combating hatred and bigotry. Advisory Board Chair Daniel Meisel welcomed guests and shared how ADL has been around for more than 100 years and, given its mission of fighting hate and bigotry, is very busy today. He explained that much of ADL’s work is with schools approaching “differentness” and “otherness” through story, with the idea that “to understand a different point of view, you need to do some listening.” So ADL

wanted to host an award focused on how the art of storytelling can be applied to address the essence of “other.” The winner was selected by a panel of boardmembers and staff. The ADL has 27 offices nationally, and its Santa Barbara office provides a multitude of anti-bias educational programs for educators, administrators, parents, students, and law enforcement. Especially in the present divisive environment, its programs are serving a crucial need. Its Early Childhood Education Initiative at Santa Barbara City College each semester provides anti-bias training and resources for early childhood educators. Since children ages 3-5 are at a critical point where seeds of prejudice can take root, the initiative strives to encourage an appreciation of diversity at this young age.

Its No Place for Hate initiative provides K-12 schools with an organizing framework for combating bias, bullying, and hatred. It provides formal training to a committee of students, teachers, administrators, and parents formed at each participating school. The curriculum and approach is highly customizable. To date, 66 schools in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo Counties have participated. On May 21, ADL is coordinating a Community Summit to discuss identity and bias. Pedaling Not Required Riven Rock

T

he City of Santa Barbara recently adopted a bicycle master plan to improve safety and balance between the various modes of transportation in the city. Also under consideration is a Vision Zero program, a collaborative effort to end all traffic fatalities and serious injuries. One of the newer and faster growing options among transportation choices is the electric bicycle or e-bike. E-bikes offer greater speed and distance with less exertion than conventional cycling for those who don’t want to arrive at work or events dripping with sweat. Rolling on an e-bike frequently reduces travel time over that of a regular bike by a good third and often even beats car travel, especially during rush-hour traffic. Sales of e-bikes have been booming in recent years while experiencing double-digit growth in 2015. It is estimated that the industry will have revenues of almost $25 billion in 2025 as compared to just over $15 billion this past year. Lower-cost technology, highcapacity lithium-ion batteries, and digital feedback components account for some of this increased popularity. Top speeds achieve between 20 and 30 miles per hour. Prices for e-bikes range from $500$10,000. Gentle pedaling lets e-bikes get more miles per electric charge, extending travel distances while getting a light workout. The higher-priced machines can get around 100 miles per charge with assisted pedaling. One of the great features, as S.B. optometrist Larry Bickford said in a recent email, is that you can “pedal and get exercise to the exact degree of effort and sweat you by Dennis Allen desire,” or you can just ride effortlessly, using only the electric motor. Hills are no obstacles for e-bikes. As with any biking, safety is a concern, and e-bikes have the additional safety issue of cars not being used to bikes accelerating quickly or traveling at 20 mph or more. E-biking offers a healthy, non-polluting option to many more people—workers with daily commutes, older people, people buying groceries, parents shuffling children to school or events, people with limited mobility, etc. No longer the owner of a car, I walk, bike, or get rides with friends to conduct my daily activities. Hopefully I will be able to continue this way for another decade, but at 75 years of age, one never knows. Whenever my next change comes, however, an e-bike will be a part of my next transportation chapter.

he publication of T.C. Boyle’s novel Riven Rock in 1998 heightened interest in Stanley and Katharine McCormick. Riven Rock was the name of the couple’s 87-acre Montecito estate located in the area of the confluence of Cold Springs and Hot Springs creeks. For some 40 years, Stanley McCormick was confined here due to debilitating mental illness. Stanley, born in 1874, was the youngest child of Cyrus and Nettie McCormick. The elder McCormick had amassed a large fortune due to his invention of the grain reaper and the founding of the family firm that eventually became International Harvester. Stanley was educated by the finest private tutors and preparatory schools before graduating with honors from Princeton in 1895. He then traveled in Europe with his widowed mother (Cyrus died in 1884) and studied art in Paris. He returned to the U.S. to take up a position in the family business. In 1904, Stanley married Katharine Dexter. She had earned a degree in biology at MIT, the second woman to graduate from that institution. Within the next few years, Stanley would evidence increasingly severe symptoms of schizophrenia, and by 1908 he needed constant care. The family brought Stanley west and ensconced him at Riven Rock, recently vacated by Stanley’s sister Mary Virginia, who also suffered from mental illness. The McCormicks had visited this area since the late 1880s. They purchased the estate in 1896 and the following year began construction of a large, two-story Mission Revival–style house of stone. The estate name came from an oak tree near the main gate, which was growing out of and had split a large boulder. Over the next decades, the estate became a showplace; exotic plants were imported from Japan, a six-acre

lemon orchard was planted, and the estate had its own dairy. Handcrafted stone walls and bridges dotted the landscape. The family hired the eminent behavioral scientist Dr. Gilbert Van Tassel Hamilton, who operated a primate laboratory at Riven Rock in the hope that this work would result in a cure for Stanley’s problems. Unfortunately, help for Stanley was not forthcoming; periods of lucidity alternated with bouts of dementia, even violence. Everything was done to see to Stanley’s comfort and happiness. A nine-hole golf course was constructed, a musical director hired, a theater built for live performances and movies, a large art collection developed. Periodically, Stanley was driven in one of the Rolls-Royces to the family’s beach cottage at Sandyland. Yet such was his condition, Katharine was basically forbidden to see her husband. She spent much of the year in Boston and usually stayed at a hotel when here. Stanley’s mother took to viewing her son from afar with binoculars. In the late 1920s, a dispute over Stanley’s care pitted Katharine against Stanley’s brother Harold and sister Anita. Harold at the time was married to Ganna Walska, later owner of Lotusland. Both sides engaged distinguished counsel; Katharine hired Newton D. Baker, who had been the secretary of war under Woodrow Wilson. In 1930, a judge decided in favor of Katharine. The search for a cure continued; upkeep of the estate and care for Stanley annually amounted to $250,000-$300,000. Stanley died from pneumonia in 1947, and Katharine died at age 92 in 1967. Riven Rock’s great main house was razed after the 1925 earthquake, and the estate has been subdivided with many of its out-buildings now serving as residences. And the oak that gave the McCormick estate its name died a number of years ago.
