Vintage Beachy Hideaway in West Downtown
T
ucked behind a tall hedge and a white picket fence downtown is a beautiful craftsman home with a beachy feel and a nautical flair. The house at 214 West Haley is a hidden treasure waiting for the right buyers to fall in love with its vintage charm, practical floorplan, solid construction, and convenient location. This home is one block from adorable Brinkerhoff Avenue and walking distance to State Street in one direction with the beach, the harbor, and the Funk Zone in another. So all the restaurants, shops, and attractions, plus the scenic delights of Santa Barbara, are just a stroll away. Walking through the white wooden gate in a trellistopped fence, I found myself in a lush, compact front garden area with roses, salvia, and other fragrant flora. As soon as the gate was shut, the space felt private and secluded from the rest of the city. The front walk, with grass on either side, leads to four Saltillotiled steps up to the covered porch. The house is larger than I expected, with the front boasting an imposing twostory façade in varying shades of sky blue, accented by white pillars, beams, and trim. A balcony peeks out from the second floor,
overlooking the front yard, calling to mind a crow’s nest high above a ship’s deck. This dramatic entry, combined with the wooden shingles on the exterior, are the first hints of the nautical feel of this home. A high-ceilinged entryway offers options. A staircase to the right leads to two bedrooms and one bath upstairs. They are joined by a sitting room on the landing that provides a convenient common area upstairs. The crow’s nest we spied from below turned out to be a delightful covered patio, offering a perfect spot for coffee in the morning or a sunset view at the end of the day. Back downstairs, you can turn left to explore the master bedroom and attached en-suite bath, or go straight ahead to the dining room and kitchen beyond. The dining room is one of my favorite spots in the house: open to the front
address: 214 West Haley Street status: On the market price: $1,024,000 and back yet cozy with a fireplace and bay window. The kitchen has a convenient island, charming subway tile counters and backsplash, and enough space for a table and chairs. There is a separate laundry room and half bath accessed off the kitchen, plus doors to both the side and back yards. The backyard is a private, grassy haven, completely fenced and large enough for outdoor dining on both the raised wood deck and in the yard down below. A flagstone pathway leads to the best bonus of all: a detached studio that can function as an artist’s retreat, separate family room, yoga studio, or other. All throughout this home, which was built in 1915, the nautical touches and vintage vibe are strong. Hardwood floors and high ceilings, plus the wide front staircase and the sturdy deck in the back, combine for a feeling of a beachy vacation home or a big Santa Barbara summer cottage. The right house hunter will find their dream home hidden behind this tall hedge and white picket fence, right downtown on Haley Street. 214 West Haley Street is currently for sale in Santa Barbara, listed by Randy Freed and Kellie Clenet of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. Reach Randy at 895-1799 or Randy@TheSantaBarbara Lifestyle.com. Reach Kellie at 705-5334 or Kellie@The SantaBarbaraLifestyle.com.

Getting to know the Raccoons
accoons are intelligent and adaptable animals, and, like all wild animals, they deserve our care and respect. Originally forest animals, raccoons have become much more common on farms and in orchards, as well as in suburban and urban areas. I happen to like raccoons — but I live in a rural area with lots of space, and I enjoy all of my encounters with wildlife. Many homeowners find raccoons to be nuisance animals, and it is better not to let them get too comfortable near your house. If you do encourage them, you may be sorry, and the misguided animals might very well come to an unfortunate end. Most people are familiar with their striking appearance. They have distinctively masked faces, densely furry gray coats, and bushy tails with alternating dark- and light-colored rings. You might think that animals with bold markings would be easier to spot in the landscape than those with more monotonous coloration. In fact, raccoons, with their ringed tails and dark and light contrasting coats, are very well camouflaged when moving around in the alternating light and shade of their natural woodland habitats. Raccoons are omnivores and feed on invertebrates and vertebrates as well as plant foods. Their scientific name is Procyon lotor. The species name lotor means “one who washes,” and, if water is available, raccoons will wash their
food using their very dexterous front paws. Raccoons are excellent swimmers. I saw this firsthand as I watched one navigate among tiny islands at Oso Flaco Lake near the mouth of the Santa Maria River. Raccoons are abundant around this lake, as here they enjoy a plentiful supply of crayfish, a favorite food. Raccoons are also very good climbers, and when my dogs scared one recently, it climbed at least 30 feet up a big sycamore tree and lay silently in the branches until the barking stopped. Raccoons can be quite large, weighing eight-20 pounds and measuring anywhere from 16 to 28 inches long. If cornered, they have been known to fight quite ferociously. The raccoon has a close relative in our area, the ringtail cat (Bassariscus astutus) although this animal is not often seen. These shy, nocturnal, omnivorous animals are rarely observed, although rumor has it that a ringtail cat colony lived for years in Mission Canyon on the grounds of the Botanic Garden. Ringtail cats are sometimes hit on our highways, and so we know they do exist here. They are probably much more common in other areas of the arid west, including in Arizona,
where the ringtail cat is the state mammal. There is much lore associated with these animals, which are also known as miners’ cats. Apparently, these small raccoon relatives were kept as pets by miners and settlers who fostered these little predators as they rid their cabins of rodents. The chance of having raccoons visit your backyard definitely increases if food and water are readily available. If you don’t want to tempt them, never leave your dog or cat food out all night, and be sure that your garbage cans are securely closed. Metal garbage cans with tight-fitting lids are probably the best. Since raccoons are omnivores, they enjoy fruit, sweet corn, and other garden produce. I installed a game camera near my grape vines one summer and soon discovered why the dogs were barking all night, and who was eating the fruit. Some friends who live in Wyoming had a pet raccoon that grew up with their children. This furry family member was featured on their annual holiday cards, and they all had lots of fun together. There are, however, many accounts of raccoons that did not turn out to be good pets at all. In California, keeping wild animals is prohibited, except under specific circumstances, and, in these cases, a special permit from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is required. Anyway, it is really much more exciting and fun to observe wild animals in their natural habitat. If you happen to find an injured or orphaned raccoon or, in fact, any other wild animal that is in trouble, be sure to contact the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network, a wonderful organization that rehabilitates wild animals and makes great efforts to return them to the wild. If you really enjoy wild animals and want to learn more about them, you might like to volunteer with this nonprofit. If you ever need to move an injured wild animal, be very careful when handling it, wear strong leather gloves, keep the animal far away from your face, and have a helper with a strong pet carrier at the ready.
Sally Isaacson, a lifelong educator and naturalist, was formerly director of education at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. She is now the education/volunteer coordinator at the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County’s wonderful Arroyo Hondo Preserve at Gaviota. If you have a raccoon nuisance problem, you will find some guidance by following this California Department of Fish and Wildlife link: californiaoutdoorsqas.com/tag/raccoons .

SBIFF Opening night Soirée
ast Wednesday, February 1, on the opening night of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) held its own fabulous Opening Night Soirée at Petros Restaurant. At the event, the ADL presented its second annual Stand-Up Award to Strawberry Days, a poignant film written and directed by Wiktor Ericsson about a Polish family working in the strawberry fields in Sweden, where they encounter bias, bullying, and labor exploitation.
Boardmembers Robert Skinner and Meghan White Skinner
Guests strolled ADL’s own red carpet and had their photos taken outside Petros, just across from the Arlington Theatre, where the Opening Night Film was shown later that evening. More than 100 guests mingled in the elegant covered courtyard and inside dining room at Petros and dined on passed horsd’oeuvres and a succulent buffet of Greek dishes. The casual, unstructured format allowed for plenty of socializing among guests who seemed like a big family, drawn together by ADL’s mission of combating hatred and bigotry. Advisory Board Chair Daniel Meisel welcomed guests and shared how ADL has been around for more than 100 years and, given its mission of fighting hate and bigotry, is very busy today. He explained that much of ADL’s work is with schools approaching “differentness” and “otherness” through story, with Jewish Federation Executive Director Michael Rassler, Ruth Rassler, SBIFF Executive the idea that “to understand a different point of view, you need to do some listening.” So ADL wanted to Director Roger Durling, and Suzanne Rapley host an award focused on how the art of storytelling can be applied to address the essence of “other.” The winner was selected by a panel of boardmembers and staff. The ADL has 27 offices nationally, and its Santa Barbara office provides a multitude of anti-bias educational programs for educators, administrators, parents, students, and law enforcement. Especially in the present divisive environment, its programs are serving a crucial need. Its Early Childhood Education Initiative at Santa Barbara City College each semester provides anti-bias training and resources for early childhood educators. Since children ages 3-5 are at a critical point where seeds of prejudice can take root, the initiative strives to encourage an appreciation of diversity at this young age. Its No Place for Hate initiative provides K-12 schools with an organizing framework for combating bias, bullying, and hatred. It provides formal training to a committee of students, teachers, administrators, and parents formed at each participating school. The curriculum and approach is highly customizable. To date, 66 schools in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo Counties have participated. On May 21, ADL is coordinating a Community Summit to discuss identity and bias. To receive updates on the work of ADL and how to get involved, text LOVE to 51555. For general information about ADL, go to santabarbara.adl.org. Family YMCa’s Kickoff for Annual Campaign Last year the campaign raised $210,000. The campaign organization is quite structured, with division leaders at the top and captains below them. This year, there are 80 volunteers in all who will be working hard to raise funds for five weeks to fulfill their laudable goal of not having to turn anyone away because of an inability to pay. The Santa Barbara Family YMCA is one of seven branches of the Channel Islands YMCA serving Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.

There was a sea of blue-and-white-striped clothing at this nautical-themed event and lots of good cheer and enthusiasm throughout the Yacht Club dining room and deck area. Guests mingled, listened to lively music by the Bryan Titus Trio, and dined on an open buffet dinner. Board Chair Jaylon Letendre began the short program with welcoming remarks and then emphasized the tremendous need for the funding.“Our goal is to ensure we always have funds available so we never have to turn a child or family away.” Letendre noted that 20 percent of the youth in the day camp program and 25 percent of the youth in the resident program receive financial assistance. At the on-site preschool, 20 percent of the children receive aid. Matt Rowe, who is chairing the Annual Campaign for the fourth time, passionately conveyed the importance of raising funds to enable youth to enroll in the YMCA’s programs, which can be “life-changing experiences” for these youth. Funds raised in the campaign provide financial aid for low-income individuals and families to participate in a
multitude of programs including health and wellness programs, day and resident camps, and preschool and afterschool programs. Last year, the YMCA gave $400,000 in direct financial assistance to individuals and families to participate in its programs. The YMCA provided an additional $127,500 in program subsidies. The YMCA offers a program for adult cancer survivors, the LiveStrong Program, which is free for all participants. It also has a Third Grade Learn to Swim Program offered free of charge to all participants. Its Haley Street Project offers structured after-school programs and health and wellness programs for families for a nominal fee.

bout 140 supporters of the Santa Barbara Family YMCA gathered at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club on February 3 for a festive party to kick off this year’s Annual Campaign. The goal is to raise funds — at least $195,000 — to enable low-income individuals and families to participate in the YMCA’s programs.
