Make Myself at HOMe

by Sarah Sinclair

Polo field Perfection I

’ve always loved horses and horse racing. I went to high school in Del Mar, also known as “where the surf meets the turf,” practically in the shadow of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. My friends and I scheduled our summer jobs and our beach time around the horse racing schedule. My dad taught me to read the racing form and yet also trust my instincts when it came to betting on the ponies. The beauty and excitement of live horse racing has captivated me ever since, and I still manage to get down to Del Mar a couple of times each racing season. Strangely, however, even though I’ve lived in Santa Barbara for more than 30 years, somehow I’ve never experienced the equine playground in our own backyard. I’ll admit it: I have yet to attend a polo match at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. When I drove onto the polo club grounds last week, I was immediately keenly aware of what I’ve been missing. Even without horses and riders thundering across the field, the sheer beauty of the bright green expanse, with the mountains soaring above it and the ocean as a backdrop, was a mesmerizing mix of excitement and regal tranquility. The attraction that finally got me to the polo fields was a visit to two condominiums that are currently listed for sale. Number 622 is a cozy one-bedroom, one-bath home on the second floor of the building overlooking the sparkling pool, with the field and ocean beyond. The current owner has decorated this space beautifully, with a neutral palette and bamboo flooring throughout, including light cabinetry and counters in the kitchen and the bathroom. It has a fireplace in the living room, which opens onto a balcony that’s just big enough for dining, and certainly offers the perfect spot for enjoying a glass of wine with tremendous sunset views. My favorite not-so-hidden feature of this home is

address: 3375 Foothill Road, Suites 622 and 911 status: On the market price: $539,000 and $1,295,000 the closet that’s been outfitted with a sleek desk, creating a custom office with a view, and maximizing the available space in an efficient and elegant manner. As often happens, I fell in love with 622. I imagined the organized, simplified lifestyle its new owner might enjoy in this small space. I was so enamored that I was tempted to skip number 911, but I’m very glad that I didn’t. Unit number 911 is a three-bedroom, two-bath home that is an absolute stunner. Walking in the front door, I was immediately pulled toward the living room and amazing view beyond. The unit is on the ground floor and has a huge outdoor patio directly behind the goal posts of the polo field. Even on a day without a horse in sight, it was easy to imagine the excitement of watching a polo match from the front-row seats that this location provides. Not even the best seats in the grandstand would hold a candle to the view of the action from here. I forced myself away from the mesmerizing view to explore the home itself and was soon just as captivated by the impeccably designed interior. Every room has jaw-dropping details. The kitchen features intricate tile on the floor and backsplash, a farmhouse sink with brass faucet, and top-of-the-line stainless-steel appliances. The bathrooms both feature unique tile treatments; both fireplaces are stunning, and every light fixture is worth a second look; and both the living room and master bedroom have almost seamless walls of glass leading out to the patio. My highlight was discovering that the master bedroom also offers an ocean view from the pillow. I kept turning my attention from the delight of discovering each of these details to the sheer beauty of the setting itself.

3375 Foothill Road, Suites 622 and 911, are currently for sale in Carpinteria, listed by David Kim of Village Properties Realtors. Reach David at david@villagesite.com or 296-0662. The interior photos shown are unit 911.

Heart created and donated to Diana Basehart by Daveena Limonick. The names of all pets who have been served are listed.

Diana Basehart Foundation’s affair of the Heart

nimal lovers with a heart gathered on Sunday, February 12, at Penny and Adam Bianchi’s idyllic Montecito estate for the Diana Basehart Foundation’s Affair of the Heart fundraiser. Funds raised support the foundation’s mission of assisting low-income South County residents pay for critical veterinary care for their pets.

About 70 guests attended the afternoon reception, enjoying wine and food while soaking in the delightful ambiance of the Bianchi’s Provençal farmhouse and sprawling wildlife sanctuary next door to Oprah’s estate. Chanteuse Daveena Limonick, a major supporter, performed Great American Songbook numbers with other musicians. Diana Basehart is a longtime supporter of animals; she and her late husband, Richard Basehart, cofounded Actors and Others for Animals in Los Angeles. Four years ago, she and Lynne Shaw, another longtime animal supporter, cofounded the Diana Basehart Foundation, which has now served more than 1,000 pets (about 75 percent dogs, 25 percent cats). Many of the owners served are elderly and on fixed income; some are disabled, some are veterans,

and some are homeless. For all of them, their pet provides precious companionship. In a short program, Basehart thanked her many supporters present and shared a heartbreaking story that she had just heard. A woman whose dog had rat poisoning was unable to pay the $1,500 cost for treatment or even the $60 to have the dog put down. She implored guests to spread the word in the community about the need for funding to help people like this. The foundation is extremely efficient; every dollar donated goes to those in need. A benefactor pays the salary of executive director Judy Hartstone, whose impressive résumé includes running PAWS of Bainbridge Island for 12 years, which had a similar mission. Basehart pays all admin expenses. Several area veterinarians regularly work with the foundation, all offering significant discounts. Hartstone verifies the financial need of all applicants. There has been a recent uptick in demand. Until last May, the foundation was helping about one pet per day; from June through December, it helped on average 70 pets

per month. It caps the amount spent at $500 per case from the general fund, but it seeks donations for specific cases when costs exceed the cap. Sometimes all that is needed is a $60 exam to enable an owner to keep his or her beloved pet; other times the cost can greatly exceed the cap. Last year, the foundation spent nearly $150,000 on veterinary assistance. In addition to the financial assistance, Hartstone also acts as counselor for struggling clients, some of whom don’t have family or close friends, and as a social worker, referring them to nonprofits to meet other needs. Basehart expressed a sentiment likely shared by many of the foundation’s clients, that “the better part of me would go if I lost my pet.” This drove Basehart to start the foundation and keeps her working day after day to support the foundation’s mission of providing “a lifeline for people and their pets.”

the station. She finally relinquished her post in 1905, when a fall incapacitated her. The lighthouse was wrecked in the 1925 earthquake and was replaced by an automated light. During the last half of the 1800s, the Mesa became, as author Walker Tompkins put it,“a crazy quilt of farms ranging from 20 to over 200 acres.” A wide variety of crops were grown, although beans seemed to be a staple. One of the major landowners in the area was Charles Potter Low. His farm was located about where Shoreline Park is today. A former clipper ship captain, he retired to Santa Barbara in the late 1870s. He hired Peter Barber, the city’s most prominent architect of the period, to design an elegant Victorian home near the intersection of present-day Marina and Cliff drives. The house was eventually torn down. The discovery of oil in the vicinity of Flora Vista Drive in 1922 by the Puritan Oil Company set off a brief flurry of speculation. Derricks sprouted throughout the Mesa, but the oil brought up was of a very poor quality. The most productive well, near Mesa Lane, produced less than 30,000 barrels and was shut down after only a year. Drilling continued haphazardly into the 1930s, but by end of the decade, the Mesa’s “oil boom” had come to a close. The last lone well shut down in 1971. By the end of World War II, the housing shortage in Santa Barbara was reaching critical levels. Marine Terrace, the first housing subdivision on the Mesa, located on Captain Low’s old farm, was laid out in the late 1940s. Once shunned due to its relative isolation and cooler temperatures, the Mesa was soon to become one of the city’s most desired neighborhoods.

he Mesa is the Santa Barbara neighborhood that stretches from the harbor along the coast to Arroyo Burro Beach, flanked on the south by the Pacific and on the north by small hills. For decades the Mesa was sparsely settled, with only a few farmers tilling its soil. Mesa, the Spanish word for “table” or “plateau,” aptly describes this area. The Chumash apparently had villages at both ends of the Mesa, at Arroyo Burro and the heights overlooking today’s harbor. The stretch of land in between remained uninhabited. The Spanish upon their arrival in 1782 also forsook the Mesa as a site for any settlement. They did, apparently, establish a lookout or outpost on the bluffs overlooking the harbor area. Where the Naval Reserve building now sits, the bluffs used to come down to the water’s edge, capped off by a large outcropping called Castle Rock. The demolition of Castle Rock, the construction of the harbor, and the extension of Cabrillo Boulevard up onto the Mesa transformed this area. The Mesa remained largely undisturbed until shortly after Santa Barbara incorporated as an American city in 1850. During this decade the federal government decided to build a series of lighthouses along the California coast, and a site was selected for Santa Barbara about one mile east of Arroyo Burro. The coal-oil light went into operation in December 1856. The lighthouse was in an isolated spot; the nearest fresh water supply was a mile away, and roads were few and crude. In 1865 Julia Williams became the lighthouse keeper, and for the next 40 years, she lit the lamp nightly and faithfully maintained
