I

’m not super Hope Ranch savvy. I’ve been there a handful of times over the years — attending events on the Laguna Blanca campus, visiting a few friends’ homes—and was once lucky enough to enjoy a daylong party at the private Hope Ranch beach. But on most days, all the streets look and sound the same to me, and the dearth of distinctive landmarks means that I’m at the mercy of my iPhone to get me where I need to go.

So I trusted my phone on a recent Saturday as I drove into Hope Ranch through the familiar wrought-iron entrance gates, past the lake and golf course in search of 4480 Via Esperanza. I felt like I was driving into another land as I wound along the curving lanes farther into the ranch. I passed a picturesque wooden barn with two horses looking my way, turned onto the appointed street, and passed through the gates onto the grounds of the estate that I soon learned was aptly named Shangri-La. I was smitten before I even saw the house. The lush landscaping was a verdant tropical oasis. Olive trees arched across the drive as I got deeper onto the grounds, and parked under a trellis. A landscaped path directed me through a garden lined with manicured hedges. It didn’t quite qualify as a maze, but it added to my sense of passing into a secret fairy-tale world. Palms flanked the front door of the house. I stepped through the arched doorway into a grand foyer with an intricately tiled staircase sweeping up to the left, and a peek of the kitchen through an arch to the right. Both of those options were tempting, but straight ahead, an absolutely mesmerizing view beckoned me through the formal living room to the terrace beyond. The terrace runs the length of the house, with various entertaining, seating, and dining areas enjoying gor-

geous views of the grounds and gardens. All of the rooms on the back side of the house open onto this wonderland, extending all of the living areas outdoors. Not that the house lacks for living area. It encompasses more than 6,400 square feet, with five bedrooms and five and a half baths, and additional rooms including a library, media room, exercise room, wine cellar, sun room, and more. Even the laundry room made me gasp, with its marble counters, custom cabinetry, and sheer size. The garages—yes, there are two—total over 1,100 square feet, as does the three-room guest house that sits so far from the main house that I didn’t even visit. Upstairs, the master suite is a feat in itself. The bedroom has a large private balcony with the same awesome view over the grounds and pool. The huge master bath features a sitting area, separate room with dual sinks, a huge bathtub set into a bay window, a separate shower, two balconies, a dressing room, and possibly the largest walk-in closet I’ve ever seen. Every

detail is exquisite and feels elegant and yet at once comfortably inviting. I came back downstairs via a back staircase off the office that’s tucked behind the master bedroom. I took a last lap around the first floor and a long final gaze at the idyllic view, and then I paused to admire the details of the impressive kitchen in which I had barely stepped foot on my first go-round. I knew I wouldn’t be able to recount all the details of

this spacious, elegant home. Much like a vacation to a long-anticipated destination, one can enjoy every minute yet know that some attractions will be left undiscovered until next time. So it is with Shangri-La. I admired every detail that I saw, yet knew that I had left many stones unturned. This idyllic estate will remain shrouded in mystery—a faraway land just down the street in Hope Ranch, waiting for its lucky new owner to come discover all of its enchanting secrets.

sold-out crowd of 165 opera aficionados gathered on Friday, February 17, in the Biltmore’s elegant Loggia Ballroom for one of the premier society events of the year: Opera Santa Barbara’s annual Opera Ball. This year’s event honored Fred Sidon for his many years of service to the organization. During the reception at this belle époque–themed event, elegantly attired guests mingled amid a couple of lighted Eiffel Tower statues. Interspersed with the threecourse meal was an assortment of brilliant operatic performances on a center stage. The design allowed for an intimate experience for guests at every table. Worldrenowned Trinidadian soprano Jeanine De Bique elated the audience with arias sprinkled throughout the evening. State Street Ballet dancers interjected some light fun and French flavor with a lively can-can performance. Mosher Studio Artists gave wonderful aria and duet performances. One of the most magical parts of the evening was when opera stars from Opera Santa Barbara’s upcoming production, The Cunning Little Vixen, seated at dining tables throughout the room, took turns spontaneously rising and singing verses from “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” with

the Santa Barbara Youth Opera joining in at the end. Board Chair Nancy Golden thanked Event Co-chair Joann Younger and Arnold Levin the supporters, and the room erupted in laughter when she noted that “outside of a young lover and a mistress, opera is the most exciting La Rondine on April 28 and 30. Both performances are at and expensive indoor activity around.” Event Co-chair the Granada Theatre. OSB’s newly formed Santa Barbara Pat Andersons praised event honoree Sidon, who served Youth Opera will present Brundibár on May 20 at the on the board for seven years (including four as president), Lobero Theatre. Fundraising is integral for OSB, not only to stage its profor his creativity, vision, and leadership. She also noted the appropriateness of honoring Sidon this year with the belle ductions, but also for its significant community-outreach activities. OSB offers free noontime concerts featuring époque theme, given his love of all things French. In leading the paddle raise, General Director Steven members of its Mosher Studio Artist Program at public Sharpe noted that ticket sales cover only about 30 percent libraries throughout Santa Barbara County and in Ventura of the cost of production, and his plea was met with sig- County. n a sense, Oak Park, located along Alamar Avenue between Tallant Road and West Junipero Street, may be considered one of the oldest parks in Santa Barbara. As far back as the Spanish era, this oak-lined section of Mission Creek was a popular gathering place for recreational activities. It was not until 1904, however, that Oak Park officially came into being. The man largely responsible for the park was Henry Tallant. Born in England in 1821, he immigrated to Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1845, where he and his brothers opened a dry-goods business. Active in local politics, Tallant worked to keep West Virginia on the Union side at the outset of the Civil War. He then relocated to Baltimore. The family business reached the brink of ruin during the nationwide depression of 1873, and Tallant and his family pulled up stakes and headed west. They came to Santa Barbara and set up housekeeping on De la Vina Street. Tallant would later become, along with Samuel Brinkerhoff, a major real estate owner on today’s Brinkerhoff Avenue, where he eventually built a home. With the opening of Cottage Hospital in 1891, the upper Westside became a target for development, a trend that quickened when a streetcar line was run into the neighborhood in 1896. In 1903, the owners of the 17-acre parcel that would become Oak Park looked to subdivide the property and put it on the market. Instead, Tallant stepped forward to preserve this sylvan stretch of Mission Creek. Both he and his wife, Caroline, had been active in civic affairs; Caroline had sat on the first board of directors of Cottage Hospital. Henry organized a fund drive for the park, to which the city’s children contributed their dimes and nickels. Their parents kicked in by passing a $15,000 bond issue, and most of the land for the park was soon purchased. The park was a city favorite. The Park Board planted some 100 new trees, and, in these early days, trout still ran in the creek. Much of the park’s popularity was due to its naturalistic setting; unlike some other city parks, Oak Park was not planted with exotics. The park became the scene of highly popular Sunday band concerts, and as recreational habits changed, barbecue pits, tennis courts, and a wading pool were installed during the course of the 1920s. Added in 1941 was a wooden dance platform. This had originally belonged to the Colin Campbell family, whose estate was located in the Devereux Point area out in Goleta. The platform had been built especially for a dinner dance given in honor of the Prince of Wales and his brother George in 1926. Reportedly, the party was less than a success: Prohibition was in force, and the disappointed royal guests took their early leave. Peter Irvine, a Goleta farmer, purchased the platform when the estate’s holdings were auctioned off in 1941 and transferred it to Oak Park. Beginning in the 1970s, Oak Park became the scene of a series of ethnic festivals that at their height, took place throughout most of the year. Today, Henry Tallant is memorialized by Tallant Road and by a plaque in the park that reads, “Erected June 26, 1909 By the School Children in Honor of Mr. Henry Tallant through whose efforts Oak Park was secured for Santa Barbara.”

hen originally constructed by Civil War hero Major Joel Fithian in 1895-96, this building was a three-and-a-half-story French Second Empire structure with a high clock tower. Located at one of the city’s busiest intersections, it contained stores on the first floor, offices on the second, and a meeting hall on the third. The Fithian Building suffered considerable damage in the 1925 earthquake, and the third story and clock tower were removed. The present Spanish Renaissance–style appearance of this important building dates from Sauter and Lockard’s remodeling of 1925 for its then owner, Dr. C. C. Park. The building remains a vital part of downtown Santa Barbara. Native Daughters of the Golden West commemorated the drug store’s centennial with a plaque in 1955. The store had been housed in an earlier building on this corner. n
