Perfect Padaro Beach Cottage
M
y friend Val lives in what I’ve always thought of as the perfect beach cottage. It sits on a quiet little lane in Montecito that’s within easy walking distance to both Miramar Beach and Hammonds. The cottage is light and bright and filled with warm, natural materials. Val has a killer sea glass collection and shows it off artfully throughout her home. Last but not least, she and her husband, Branden, are surfers, so their surfboards and gear are the ultimate beach-themed furnishings. There’s nothing artificial about their décor. Their beach cottage echoes and emphasizes what’s important in their lives. When I visited 3353 Padaro Lane last week, I wasn’t expecting to find a rival for Val and Branden’s beachy perfection. Knowing that the price tag of this home is almost 10 million dollars, I assumed that my modest tastes would be overwhelmed by an elegant environment. But I was wrong. While it is elegant in a crisp, beachy manner, it is also comfortable enough to walk through barefoot straight from a day at the beach. I fell head over heels in love with this charming beachfront beauty. The house has an even better location than if it were actually on the sand. Really! This stretch of Padaro is
elevated enough so that the backyard is above the beach, providing privacy. A whitewashed staircase shared with just one neighbor gives immediate, easy access down to the sand and surf. I’m told that the backyard provides 75 feet of ocean frontage. I was too mesmerized by the view to focus on its size, but it felt like miles. As I stood on the back deck chatting with the real estate agent, we watched a couple walking along while their dog bounded ahead, the sun sparkling on the waves and whales cavorting offshore. I’m sure it’s stunning all the time, but it felt like I had picked the perfect day. The backyard consists of a multilevel natural-wood deck, designed to offer distinct seating arrangements and gathering spaces. It’s big enough for a large party but feels intimate when you’re sitting and talking to one person. My favorite part of the deck is the round wooden hot tub tucked unobtrusively in a corner. An ocean-view dip in your own spa should be a daily occurrence. I could have ended my visit at that point, without even stepping inside the house, and been satisfied that I had seen 10 million dollars’ worth of home. But inside I did go, and I’m glad that I did. The house itself is filled with light, with walls of windows and plenty of doors. The lines of the beautiful wood-paneled ceilings throughout the house draw all eyes toward the views. Supported by wide, white beams, windows up high create an even more airy atmosphere.

The house has three bedrooms, including a dreamy master suite with a walk-in closet, a separate dressing area, and a unique curved, fossil-brick fireplace. I couldn’t decide which of the two bathrooms was my favorite: the master with a wall of glass brick or the second bathroom with a deep soaking tub. Every single detail of this house is charming, exuding casual elegance. The kitchen was redone in 2015 and has a large center island with a deep farmhouse sink and custom glassfronted wooden cabinets. An impressive curved stainless hood above the stove shines down on the room. A breakfast nook between the kitchen and living room plus a separate formal dining room provide options for meal times. Of course, the veranda offers al fresco dining most of the year, as well. I drove away from Padaro Lane realizing I had just fallen in love with an almost-10-million-dollar house. But it’s okay. Val will let me come visit her beach cottage as often as I like. And I can gaze up at 3353 Padaro Lane as I walk along the beach.

n Wednesday, March 8, community members gath-
ered at the Coral Casino to honor Jon Clark and Janet Garufis, this year’s recipients of the Santa Barbara Foundation’s Man and Woman of the Year Awards. The awards honor individuals for their extraordinary service and volunteerism in Santa Barbara. More than 300 guests turned out for the 74th annual luncheon, including many past recipients of the awards and many other leaders from the business, nonprofit, and government sectors. It was a quintessential sunny Santa Barbara day, which made for a lovely reception at the water’s edge on La Pacifica Terrace. Guests adjourned to the ballroom for lunch, where President and CEO Ron Gallo welcomed the guests and discussed the importance, especially in these times, of having empathy and how through volunteering we come into contact with the experiences of others and develop that sense of empathy. He described Garufis and Clark as “empathetic, graceful, beautiful, honest, kind, and courageous” and stated that they “have and continue to make good stuff happen every day.”
Past Men and Women of the Year: Penny Jenkins, David Anderson, and Maryan Schall
Garufis, president and CEO of Montecito Bank & Trust, has held leadership positions with United Way, Sansum Clinic, the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, the Scholarship Foundation, and the American Heart Association, and has supported a very long list of other organizations. Clark, president of the Bower Foundation, has held leadership positions with Cottage Health, Community Environmental Council, and Storyteller Children’s Center. Among the organizations he has been actively involved with are the Alliance for Living and Dying Well, Direct Relief, and the Chamber of the Santa Barbara Region. In introducing Clark, Ron Werft shared accolades from many community leaders and noted that a constant theme in Clark’s life was “simply reaching out, getting the right people together around a community need, and probing ‘Is there a better way to do it?’ and then staying with it and funding it.” He concluded by sharing that “Jon is not afraid to swim upstream, and when he does, he can change the direction of the river.” In accepting the award, Clark stated that he was humbled and inspired to do more and to do

better, now that his name is on the list of recipients. In introducing Garufis, Maryan Schall proclaimed, “No one deserves the award more than Janet.” Schall noted that in addition to the many leadership roles Garufis has assumed, she also gets involved in the vital everyday work of organizations: reading to girls at Girls Inc., serving soup at the Foodbank’s Empty Bowls event, and serving in many other capacities. In summary, Schall stated that Garufis is “the epitome of giving back to the community, and she is just plain nice.” In accepting the award, Janet shared that she doesn’t “know how to say thank you for being recognized for doing something I love.” Nominations for the awards can be made by anyone; the decisions are made by a Nomination Committee and a Selection Committee formed by the Santa Barbara Foundation, comprising foundation trustees, nonprofit leaders, and community leaders.

n the 1860s and 1870s, W.W. Hollister, in cooperation with a number of partners, built one of the largest and most successful sheep-ranching operations in California. Albert and Thomas Bloodgood Dibblee ultimately took over the day-to-day operations of this ranching empire until the partnership was dissolved in the early 1880s. Flyer Dibblee was descended from a family that had arrived in Massachusetts from England in 1636. He became a judge in upper New York state and eventually settled in New York City. There he raised his family of nine, including sons Albert, Thomas, and Henry, all of whom would ultimately settle in California. Albert left school at 16 and, through his position at the State Bank of New York, developed a sharp business sense. After an Thomas Bloodgood Dibblee, with his brothers Albert accidental injury in 1848, he was and Henry, established Rancho San Julian in 1881. advised to take a sea voyage. He decided to head for California to engage in the lucrative mercantile trade in a booming San Francisco. A frugal man, Albert lived for years in a small room above his office as he slowly made his fortune. He also got involved in the city’s volatile politics, serving on the executive committee of the Vigilance Committee in 1856. In 1858, Albert and a partner purchased the 15,600-acre Santa Anita Ranch in Los Angeles County and convinced his brother Thomas to come out to look after the ranch. Born in 1823, Thomas grew up in New York City. He earned two degrees from Columbia and went to work in the law office of Hamilton Fish, later governor of and senator from New York and then secretary of state under Ulysses S. Grant. Albert obtained a law degree and practiced law until coming to California. Thomas directed the successful sheep operation at Santa Anita, while Albert marketed the wool. Albert also became president of the Giant Powder Company, which manufactured dynamite. As a wool merchant, Albert eventually came in contact with Hollister, who by now was running a successful operation on his San Benito County ranch. In 1860, the partnership was cemented when Thomas and Hollister met at a sheep auction in Santa Barbara County. The partnership now entered a period of both struggle and opportunity. The drought of the mid-1860s virtually destroyed the cattle industry and put tremendous pressure on sheep ranchers. With prices depressed, the partners were able to buy up enormous tracts of land, concentrating their efforts in Santa Barbara County. By the late 1860s, they owned almost 140,000 acres in the county. As Hollister began to pay more attention to other interests, Albert oversaw the partnership’s finances from San Francisco while Thomas was operations manager and attorney. By the late 1870s, Hollister was having debt problems, and his brush with death when he accidentally ingested poison caused the Dibblees to rethink their position. The final 1881 settlement had the Dibblees taking Rancho San Julian, with Hollister taking five smaller ranches. Hollister’s wife, Annie, reportedly said that the Dibblees had gotten the pie while they had been left with the crust. Henry, the youngest Dibblee brother, managed San Julian from 1875 until his death in 1910. Albert remained in Northern California until his death in 1895. Thomas married into the De la Guerra family and moved into a palatial home on the Mesa in the mid-1880s. He, too, died in 1895. Rancho San Julian remains a working ranch, still in the hands of descendants of the Dibblee family.

hen the old Plaza del Mar bathhouse was closed in 1925 as a result of earthquake damage, David and Martha Platt Gray (he was the vice president of the Ford Motor Company) offered the city $100,000 to build a new pavilion and bathhouse at the opposite end of the oceanfront on the condition that the city would furnish it. The city failed to do so, so the Grays built and furnished it on their own and then gave the building to the city in 1927. The visible fruits of their persistence did not go unnoticed. “It was after the completion of the breakwater and the Gray Pavilion,” according to former mayor Patrick Maher,“that the people really began to see the possibilities for developing the waterfront and harbor into the recreational area it is today.” During World War II, Army Redistribution Headquarters and medical stations were located on the top floor, while the first-floor bathhouse remained open for public use. Throughout the mid-1950s, the Hotel Mar Monte across the boulevard leased the complex from the city and used it as a convention center. It is now an event and rental facility and bathhouse operated by the City Parks & Recreation Department. n
