Show & Tell Preview of Hotel Californian I was lucky to be one of about 200 people invited to the Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation (MOXI) last Wednesday to welcome, toast, and preview the grand opening of Hotel Californian. The soonto-be-opened luxury hotel is the newest addition to Santa Barbara’s waterfront and arguably the longest-awaited development in our city’s recent history. Wednesday night’s event featured musical entertainment, local libations, celebrity mingling, and welcoming remarks by the mayor and both the owner and general manager of the hotel. Members of the press were able to walk across the street to view a model room in one building of the hotel, which is still under construction. Our group was led by the hotel owner himself, Michael Rosenfeld.
But the real fun started the next day. My colleague Suzanne and I were invited on a personal tour of the hotel and its grounds by Hotel Californian General Manager Carlos Lopes and project manager Tim Krump. We donned hard hats and bright orange vests and spent an hour and a half traipsing up halfwaytiled staircases and through hallways strung with plastic sheeting and caution tape. The hotel will occupy three separate buildings, and our tour took us through all of them. The Californian building is on the southwest corner of State and Mason, in the spot that the original Hotel Californian occupied. The old Hotel Californian was built in 1925 and had its grand opening one week before the infamous earthquake hit. It was repaired and reopened, but it never reclaimed the grandeur that had been anticipated. Instead, after enduring the Great Depression and both World Wars, the hotel fell into disrepair in the 1950s and beyond. Having lived in Santa Barbara since the 1980s, I remember it as the building with Rocky Galenti’s Bar & Restaurant on its ground floor, and I asked Rosenfeld whether
address: 36 State Street status: Not for Sale
they saved any portion of the old building to use in the new hotel. He smiled and relayed that they were able to save the entire four-story façade. Clearly, the attention to detail that has gone into planning and designing the new hotel has been a labor of love. The Californian building will again be four stories tall and contain 62 of the hotel’s 121 guest rooms. The rooftop will hold the pool, a Jacuzzi, and an observation deck, while the ground floor will house the spa and state-ofthe-art fitness center. We walked through the spa, and with a little imagination got to experience a couple of the treatment rooms and their exquisite tile work. The ceiling
of the main room of the spa is a gorgeous, round, deep-blue tile mosaic. The Mason building is on the southeast corner of State and Mason. It is made up of two three-story buildings and will hold 58 guest rooms, plus several meeting rooms. It also contains the main entrance to the hotel and the lobby. Walking through today, one can already feel the grandeur of the lobby area. We visited several guest rooms, each with different color schemes and themes. The bathrooms boast double sinks with marble countertops, barkskin-styled vinyl walls, and beautiful glass shower surrounds, and the closet and cabinet doors are mashrabiya screen patterns. Every guest room has a 65-inch TV, and the in-room bars contain full-size bottles. The tile, furnishings, and other touches are the work of renowned interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, who was employed to give the Californian his signature stamp. Most impressive to me is that no two rooms are alike. The State building, on the northeast corner of State and Mason, will surround an open grassy courtyard and a coffee shop, both open to the public. We walked up a wide staircase with a dramatic curved shape, echoing the arched doorways of the ballrooms downstairs, and stood on what will be a rooftop event space with one of the most striking views in town. It’s easy to imagine the ocean-view weddings and other events that will soon take place here. Before we left, we were also able to tour the restaurant on the ground floor of the Mason building. As we toured, Lopes painted a picture of the dishes that will be served, featuring local produce, meats, and wines. The as-yet-tobe-named restaurant is just one of the many facets of the hotel that will both showcase Santa Barbara specialties and be open to the public. Some may argue that we don’t need more bars and restaurants next to the waterfront, but after a peek behind the scenes of our luxurious new neighbor, I’m glad that it will offer grassy paseos, beautiful views, and a friendly place to dine for all of us to enjoy.
Hotel Californian will be located at 36 State Street. Construction is on schedule for a planned opening this summer. Room rates will average about $550/night. For further information and inquiries, visit thehotelcalifornian.com.

Family Service agency Holds cooking Up Dreams event
o
n March 31, more than 300 enthusiastic supporters of Family Service Agency (FSA) gathered at the Fess Parker DoubleTree Resort for its third annual Cooking Up Dreams event. Chefs from 14 area restaurants served up tantalizing offerings to raise funds for FSA’s programs for at-risk youth, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, school-based counseling, and youth behavioral health. The chefs competed for the Judge’s Award, selected by a celebrity panel, and for the People’s Choice Award, voted on by guests. Even before emcee and auctioneer Andrew Firestone took to the stage with his characteristic zeal, there was high energy in the room. The unstructured format allowed for lots of mingling, and many conversations were about the amazing work of this organization. During the short program, FSA Executive Director Lisa Brabo shared how “since its founding in 1899, Family Service Agency has helped ensure that vulnerable individuals and families have access to food, shelter, and other basic needs, as well as youth mentoring, parent

education, and a wide array of mental-health programs.” She reminded guests that during these uncertain times, their support is all the more critical. She also announced that as of July 1, FSA is merging with the Santa Maria Valley Youth & Family Center. The merger of these organizations that provide similar services in their respective areas will enable economies of scale that will be of great benefit to the communities served. Firestone rallied the crowd, declaring how vitally important donor support is to FSA’s programs. True to his word that he was “going to jump around here like a crazed monkey,” Firestone entertained the crowd through the ask and live auctions and raised muchneeded funds. The celebrity judge panel consisted of KEYT’s Joey Buttita, The Restaurant Guy John Dickson (whose column appears in The Indy), Edible Santa Barbara’s Krista Harris, and renowned Denver chefs Jen Jasinski (a Santa Barbara native) and her husband, Max Mackissock. The Celebrity Chef’s award went to Chef Peter McNee of
Little Sisters Leilanie and Charli with Event Cochair Meredith Garofalo
Convivo for his Pesce Crudo: raw ahi tuna, cucumber, and cara cara on squid ink crackers. The People’s Choice award went to Chef Jesus Charco of Santa Barbara FisHouse for his prawns rolled in wonton wrappers. FSA is in need of both volunteers and donations. The Big Brothers Big Sisters program serves more than 200 youth ages 6-15, but has another 59 boys and 44 girls on a wait list. The school-based counseling program operates at K-12 campuses in Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, and Lompoc. Insufficient funding has caused wait lists both last year and this year. FSA’s behavioral health program, which serves both adults and children, has seen a significant increase in demand because of the Affordable Care Act, which increased both the number of people who qualified for Medi-Cal and the public’s awareness of mental-health issues and services. Funding has not kept pace; there are currently 144 people on the wait list for this program. For those without Medi-Cal, FSA has a sliding fee scale and does not turn anyone away because of an inability to pay.

f you are lucky, you might spot one or both of the moths featured here in natural
areas close to Santa Barbara. By planting suitable native plants, you may be able to attract these beauties to your own garden. In the world of moths, both of these are relatively large and colorful species. At dusk in late summer, I often watch the flower beds around my house for the fast-moving white-lined sphinx moth or striped morning sphinx (Hyles lineata), as they seek nectar from the flowers of various sages (Salvia species) and from my evening Ceanothus silkmoth caterpillar primroses (Oenothera species). On first encountering this insect, you may think that you are watching a hummingbird. Once, on a trip to Anacapa Island, I saw a patch of wildflowers literally alive with hundreds of them. They hover around their favorite flowers with wings moving so fast that they are all a blur, hence their other common name of hummingbird moth. They are very difficult to photograph while they are moving, but if you succeed, you will see that they are quite beautiful. The adult has a distinctive pattern of colors that include brown, cream, white, pink, and black. It is quite large and measures two and a half to three inches across. This is the most common sphinx moth in California and is found throughout the state. It occasionally occurs in huge numbers, especially in desert areas. With their green, yellow, and black patterns, the caterpillars have occasionally been so numerous as to slicken highways with their crushed bodies. White-lined sphinx caterpillars feed voraciously on many species of plants including California fuchsia (Epilobium canum) and different species of evening primrose. When they have finished feeding, they go into the ground to pupate. A second spectacular moth is the ceanothus silkmoth (Hyalophora euryalus). This is probably California’s most beautiful and commonly seen large moth, with a wingspan of up to five inches. It has a soft, velvety appearance and has exquisite reddish-brown, gray, and white markings. The green caterpillar measures up to four inches in length. After it has finished feeding, it spins a gray, oval-shaped silken cocoon. Ceanothus silkmoth cocoons may be found on branches of Ceanothus shrubs and other host plants. In her fascinating book Chumash Ethnobotany (Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, 2007), Dr. Jan Timbrook notes that the Chumash people made rattles from dried cocoons. The ceanothus silkmoth is found in coastal areas, foothills, canyons, and mountains up to 9,000 feet in elevation in California. This distribution coincides with the habitats of the food plants needed by the caterpillars: different species of Ceanothus, coffeeberry (Rhamnus californica), and a number of other native shrubs. The adult moths have nonfunctional mouthparts, so they do not feed and die shortly after they mate and reproduce. Females release a powerful chemical that attracts males during the early-morning hours. At the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, where many of their chosen larval food plants are grown, ceanothus silkmoths are sometimes seen clinging to walls of buildings on spring mornings. With his partner William A. Edwards, Joseph J. Plunkett designed Santa Barbara’s original airport terminal, seen here in the 1950s, as well as numerous other graceful structures, including the historic Arlington Theatre.
Arlington’s Architect T
hrough the decades, Santa Barbara has been beautified by the efforts of a number of talented and innovative architects. The name of one of these, Joseph J. Plunkett, will be forever linked with one of the most distinctive buildings in the city, the Arlington Theatre. Plunkett was born in Rome, New York, in 1900. He entered Syracuse State University in 1919. During his junior year in 1922, he and some friends took a trip to California. Plunkett never returned east and never completed his degree. Instead, he associated himself with an architect in Santa Maria, where he engaged in design work for the Santa Maria Inn. In 1923, he married, and the young couple planned to move to Los Angeles. They never got farther south than Santa Barbara, and here they settled. The earthquake of June 1925 presented young Plunkett with a marvelous opportunity. Not only was there the need to rebuild the city, but the trend to give Santa Barbara a unified architectural look, centered on the Spanish Colonial Revival style, accelerated. So Plunkett, a great admirer of George Washington Smith, the foremost practitioner of this style in Santa Barbara, was in the right place at the right time. He joined with William A. Edwards to form the firm of Edwards and Plunkett soon after the earthquake. The following year, Henry Howell joined the duo. Howell would leave in 1928. Plunkett’s trademark was his ability to quickly sketch design ideas on anything that was handy: menus, napkins, book covers. Shortly after the firm had received the commission to design the Arlington Theatre,
it sent a set of drawings and plans down to the investors in Los Angeles in October 1930. The investors, Fox West Coast Theatres, not entirely happy with the drawings, asked Plunkett to come south to meet with them. The night before the meeting, on the top of his hotel room dresser, which was not even large enough to hold an entire sheet of drawing paper, Plunkett formulated the design for the theater with which we are so familiar. Edwards and Plunkett designed both commercial and residential buildings. One of Plunkett’s finest designs was the clubhouse for the Santa Barbara Woman’s Club. This rambling Spanish-Colonial building blends beautifully into its rustic Mission Canyon setting. Other buildings that may be familiar include the fire station at 415 East Sola Street, Cold Spring and Garfield schools, and the National Guard Armory at 700 East Canon Perdido Street. Plunkett was a stickler for detail, and his designs are characterized by the attention paid to window treatments, ornamental iron, tile designs, and so on. The firm of Edwards and Plunkett dissolved in 1940, when Edwards left to take a government job. Their last major commission was the design of the terminal building at the Santa Barbara airport, which still stands next to the present-day terminal. Plunkett continued on alone. His last design was the El Presidio building at 802-812 Anacapa Street, with its charming domed tower. He did not live to see the building completed. Plunkett died in May 1946. His career in architecture had not been particularly long, just a little over 20 years, but it had been a remarkable one.
