Joyful samarkand Home
T
he word alegria means “joy” in Spanish. I can’t think of a better way to describe the charming cottage for sale at 520 Alegria Road in Samarkand Hills. Its lush gardens, cheerful colors, and playful touches throughout combine to create a serene, happy, joy-filled home. As I walked up its curved front path last week, my gaze bounced from the friendly porch above to the colorful stone-lined garden to the jaunty vintage lamppost perched in the yard. A carved stone bunny posed with a basketful of eggs, welcoming visitors up the steps onto the brick-lined front porch. The front door of the house is a blue-gray wooden work of art, with horizontal inlaid panels, a row of small glass panes at the top, and vintage brass hardware. The door opens onto a foyer that provides an initial glimpse of the brilliant hardwood floors that are on display throughout the entire house. Through the foyer to the right lies the living room, painted a cheerful celery green. It sports a brick fireplace in the corner, plantation shutters on all the windows, and huge French doors leading out to the back garden. The room has a solid, farmhouse feel, which I soon learn resonates through the rest of the house, which was built in 1935. A separate yet cozy dining room adjoins the living room and leads through a large doorway into the kitchen. From the cool pale green of the living and dining rooms, it’s a loud transition into the kitchen, which is painted a cheery cherry pink. It’s perfect for this central room, which has been thoughtfully remodeled with a huge center island, marble countertops, a Dutch door, farm-
house sink, custom cabinetry, and top-of-the-line appliances. It’s undoubtedly a room where people will gather, the central heart of this joyful home. Through a short hallway is the huge master bedroom. It’s a lightpink oasis, secluded privately in the back of the house. It has builtin shelving, a curved coved ceiling, and French doors to the backyard. It also has a bathroom that stopped me in my tracks, with a color scheme that must be seen to be appreciated. Deep wine-colored tile and cabinetry mesh with a lime-green sink and tub, sitting like a double scoop of sorbet in tart contrast to
address: 520 Alegria Road status: On the market price: $1,325,000 lime, and tangerine to pluot, white-flesh nectarine, and Hachiya persimmon. I learn that there are more than 20 trees, plus fabulous old blackberry vines and 13 pineapple guava plants. I’m also told that a gate in the back fence leads into a neighbor’s yard. The owner and her neighbor had been friends in elementary school in Los Angeles and rediscovered each other when she bought this house. They once again became good friends, put the gate between their yards, and even shared a goat for many years. Back inside, the other two bedrooms lie at the front of the house, accessed off the foyer or through a short hallway through the dining room. Both sunny and charming, they share the second bathroom, which is tiled in pale pastels, also original to the house. As I turn toward the front door, I spy a built-in alcove, inside of which sits an old-fashioned telephone that still functions and even rings. This unexpected antique puts one last smile on the face of every visitor to this happy house full of joy.
the sweet bedroom. As I step through the French doors, the backyard immediately captures my heart. The sounds of the splashing fountain mingle with the songs of the birds. Stepping up and into the greenery, I see that many of the trees are marked with their names, from apricot, peach, lemon,

caUSe action Fund’s leadership awards reception
o
n April 9, nearly 150 supporters of CAUSE Action Fund (CAF) gathered at the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center for its annual Leadership Awards Reception. Both CAF and its affiliated organization, CAUSE (Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy), promote immigrant rights, education, public transportation, sustainable development, and a healthy environment in the Central Coast region. CAF is focused on mobilizing voters and on doing legislative advocacy. The guests, a broad cross section of the community, enjoyed a reception on this sunny afternoon at the water’s edge, which featured tasty Mexican bites like ceviche shots and guacamole and mango tostadas from sponsor El Zarape. Guests were then seated for the program and emcee Monique Limón, a current California Assemblymember and former CAF boardmember, welcomed everyone, recognized the sea of current and former political leaders present, and emphasized the critical importance of CAF in these difficult times. Executive Director Maricela Morales shared how CAF is invested in the most marginalized, disenfranchised communities in the area: the Eastside and Westside of
Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Guadalupe, Santa Paula, and Oxnard. In discussing the effectiveness of CAF, Morales noted that most of CAF’s staff are people of color who are themselves facing institutionalized racism every day and that “we come from these communities and we are committing our lives to these communities.” In the last election, CAF had more than 30,000 conversations with “occasional, low-propensity voters” in these areas (whom CAF identified by age, race, and voting records). Of these, they tagged for follow-up the 20,000 who voiced support and a whopping 79 percent of these supporters actually voted (89 percent in Santa Barbara). Clearly, CAF knows how to mobilize voters. Last year, CAF registered more than 1,000 voters in Santa Maria. It won major victories in that city and in Oxnard: Their school districts adopted policies to register eligible seniors twice per year. Another victory in Santa Maria was the adoption of district elections there. CAUSE had run a long campaign, and after the threat of a lawsuit, the city council acceded. The event honored a couple with Lifetime Achievement Awards: Greg Freeland and Sharon Hoshida. Freeland is
CAF Boardmember Gina Fischer, Vicente Wilson, former CAUSE Boardmember Alma Hernandez, Grant House, and Catalina Wilson
a professor at California Lutheran University, the director of its Global Studies Program, and co-editor of the book International Environmental Justice. Hoshida was the program director and interim director of the UCSB Women’s Center. The list of their community service is nearly endless. Civic Participation Awards were presented to Amancio de la Cruz for his work organizing farmworkers in Santa Maria and to Milburga de Jesus Catalan for her work organizing tenants to ban “no cause” evictions in Santa Barbara. Keynote speaker County Board of Supervisors Chair Joan Hartmann gave a poignant speech about the acrossthe-board assault on justice we are now experiencing and the importance of CAUSE and other organizations to bring about change in this new era. Since the election, CAUSE Action Fund has lobbied for sanctuary policies for immigrant families, health-care access, and environmental protection. It will be seeking to move Santa Barbara City Council elections to even years to increase voter participation and reduce election costs. CAF will also seek to promote Latino interests in the redrawing of district maps in Santa Maria.
Operations and Research Director Cameron Yee, Organizing Director Hazel Davalos, and Policy and Communications Director Lucas Zucker

fter the Southern Pacific Railroad completed the Coast Line in 1901, making it possible for passengers to travel uninterrupted from Los Angeles to San Francisco, rail excursions became popular. The increased rail traffic, however, necessitated larger facilities in Santa Barbara. When the railroad realigned the local tracks in 1905, it also built a new passenger depot, the fourth to be constructed in the city since 1887, when the railroad first arrived. A local architect, Francis W. Wilson, active here from the 1890s to the early years of the 20th century, was engaged to do the new building. The Mission Revival style was selected so that the depot would “conform in general style to the Mission Architecture so appropriate and so popular in Southern California.” The station was sited to allow passengers and their escorts easy arrival and departure by way of State or Chapala streets. For more than five decades, an attractive lawn area, known as Depot Park, lined the access driveway between the depot and State Street. In 1998, the state’s most noted restoration architect, Milford Wayne Donaldson, was chosen to perform his craft on the depot, with the result that the Santa Barbara railroad station stands resplendent as a magnificent Mission Revival–style example, as it did in the beginning. The depot had already been declared a City Landmark in 1980, and it remains as one of a very few such railroad stations remaining in California. The landscape was also redone in 1998-1999 by David Black, who, working from old photos, re-created the park opposite the tracks as well as the rock-edged pathway that led from the depot to the Chapala Street entrance of the old Potter Hotel. Thus the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot remains an ideal introduction to the city for rail travelers. The Native Daughters and Native Sons of the Golden West dedicated a comn memorative plaque in December 1999.
