Stylish Living in the Funk Zone
T
he most striking architectural element I’ve seen lately is the floor-to-ceiling steel and glass door at 125 Gray Avenue in the Funk Zone. The door leads from the living room to the courtyard patio, pivoting outward in a compelling blend of physics, beauty, and artistry. This dramatic 17-foot entry may steal the show before one even steps foot inside, but a complete tour of this home reveals one jaw-dropping feature after another. I walked up during a recent lively Saturday afternoon. If you’ve spent any time in the Funk Zone lately, you’ve seen that the neighborhood is hopping. Two-block-long Gray Avenue is no exception. There’s an art gallery at the end of the street, a buggy rental outlet at the corner attracts plenty of attention, and the popularity of the Waterline complex on the next block means there’s no shortage of people or activity. However, as soon as I crossed the gated entryway of 125 Gray Avenue, the Funk Zone faded away. I found myself in a cool, contemporary courtyard — a quiet respite from the neighborhood flurry. The front patio area is a sunken garden walled by concrete and softened by drought-tolerant landscaping, including a profusion of bright fuchsia bougainvillea that spills over the top of the garage. This courtyard is just large enough for a few chairs, but not to worry — there are plenty of decks and outdoor entertaining areas throughout this home. After admiring the showpiece pivoting door, I stepped through the “regular” front door and into a light, bright great room with an immediate impression of clean-lined spaciousness. The living room has 19-foot ceilings, a fire-
place, and a huge window along one wall that mimics the front doorway like an echo. Polished gray concrete floors enhance the crisp, clean lines throughout. There is a floating steel staircase along the righthand wall of the room, but before exploring upstairs, I walk deeper in to explore the kitchen. Two separate dining areas make efficient use of the spacious kitchen. An island with a breakfast bar is positioned so that diners are facing toward the kitchen and away from the living room, helping delineate the spaces. To the right is a dining table with chairs on one side and a built-in bench on the other. Through a hallway separated by a sliding pocket door is a bathroom, with a bedroom beyond. These rooms are sleek and private, despite their proximity to the living rooms. At first look, I thought that this bedroom, with sliding doors to a private patio and a laundry room cleverly hidden behind closet doors, was the master bedroom. Then I went upstairs and was completely blown away. Just the act of walking up the steel staircase that seems to float above the living room was a treat. I found myself in a loft space that could serve as a den, a bedroom, or a bright, open office space. Beyond the
loft is one of the coolest bathrooms I’ve ever seen. A glass-enclosed shower and a free-standing tub are showcased by Japanese-style shoji screens that slide into pocket doors, allowing as much or as little privacy or openness as desired. There is no doubt that this is the master suite. I was smitten with this contemporary pied-à-terre. I thought my tour was done … until I discovered the rooftop terrace. I walked out onto an outdoor living room that feels like a treehouse or clubhouse for adults. It has a fireplace, a wet bar, and amazing 180-degree views of the ocean, the harbor, and the mountains. Of course, this rooftop room is open to the elements, but with Santa Barbara’s temperate climate, I’d be dining, lounging, and entertaining up top all year round. Living in the Funk Zone would have its pros and cons. There are myriad restaurants and hot spots within arms’ reach, the beach is two blocks away, and the freeway is convenient. But the crowds and the action aren’t for everyone. At 125 Gray Avenue, you’ve got the best of all worlds. The entertainment is at your doorstep, but you can shut it all out and enjoy your private respite in the eye of the storm, admitting only as much or as little of the world outside as you want to.
125 Gray Avenue is currently for sale in Santa Barbara, listed by David Kim of Village Properties Realtors. Reach David at david@villagesite.com or 296-0662.

Food from the Heart’s Sips and Nibbles
n April 13, a sold-out group of 150 supporters of Food from the Heart gathered for its fourth annual Sips and Nibbles in El Paseo at Margerum Wine Company, Au Bon Climat, Grassini Family Vineyards, and the Wine Cask Restaurant. While the event was a fundraiser, it felt more like happy friends having a fabulous party. There was donated wine pouring freely in all three tasting rooms and copious, delectable donated appetizers from the Wine Cask Restaurant, Renaud’s Patisserie & Bistro, C’est Cheese, and Chocolate Gallery, alongside creations from Food from the Heart’s own professional chef, Aaron Casale. Founded in 1994, Food from the Heart provides highquality, nutritious, tasty food to homebound individuals suffering from an illness or injury in Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Isla Vista. With a lean staff of four part-time employees and a core group of 50 regular volunteers (and many more occasional volunteers), Food from the Heart prepares and delivers a bag of food each week to 158 clients, free of charge. According to Board Chair Kelly Onnen, the organization’s name reflects all the love that goes into each bag of food. Most clients are referred from medical agencies, with many coming through Hospice of Santa Barbara, the Can-
cer Center of Santa Barbara, Cottage Health, and Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care. Clients can self-refer, in which case the vetting is more extensive to ensure a legitimate need. The current wait list is short but varies throughout the year. The organization does triage, ensuring that the most needy always receive food. Most fruits and vegetables are donated and harvested by a team of volunteers led by Tom Urban, who shared that no property is too large or too small to harvest. Last year, Urban and his team harvested 440,000 pounds of produce. Veggie Rescue in Santa Ynez also contributes produce that it harvests. Food preparation is done three mornings per week under the direction of Chef Casale at Trinity Lutheran Church, which has donated its kitchen and fellowship hall space to the organization for years. The food is high-quality, nutritious, and both visually appealing and tasty. Onnen explained that many of the clients have poor appetites, so making the food appealing is critically important. Another group of volunteers delivers the food each week. Each bag of food contains enough for at least four days and includes soup, an entrée, a baked casserole, a couple of salads, a bag of fruit, dessert, and fresh bread (donated
Volunteers Tom Urban, Lorri Lynch, Rickey Farbman, and Steven Markowitz
by Panera Bread, Our Daily Bread, and D’Angelos). The drivers visit with clients and some assist clients with chores on separate visits. These volunteers, just like the harvesters and food preparers, truly have a lot of “heart.” Unlike most organizations, Food from the Heart does not need volunteers. Onnen, who has been with the organization for 15 years, shared how because its work makes such a difference in the lives of its clients, the volunteers really enjoy the work and many stay with the organization for years. The organization is, however, always in need of cash donations and fresh produce donations.

Rob Maday, Landscape Architect Montecito’s hot springs resort perched precariously on a hillside around 1880
Montecito’s Hot springs
t
he 1870s was the decade when tourism first became an important factor in the South Coast’s economy. An important element in this development was the area’s growing reputation as a health spa. In addition to the mild climate and soothing ocean waters, the region boasted a number of mineral hot springs, the most famous of which were the pools just above Montecito. Travelers from the world over came to Santa Barbara seeking a cure for their aches, pains, and illnesses. The Montecito hot springs are located about a mile above the end of Hot Springs Road. The Chumash believed the waters had curative powers and used the springs for a number of purposes. During the Spanish and Mexican periods, the Californios would journey up the canyon to do their laundry in the warm waters. Such was the difficulty in getting to the springs, the women would often camp out for several days, making it all a grand social event. The soldiers of the New York Volunteers discovered the springs when they garrisoned Santa Barbara in 1846 during the Mexican-American War. One of the soldiers wrote he “never yet came across a more picturesque sight, nor do I expect it in the future.” Wilbur Curtiss initially developed the site as a resort. He arrived in Santa Barbara in the late 1850s, in broken health. Reportedly, by drinking the water and bathing in the springs, he was rejuvenated in six months. Curtiss bought the property, with plans to build a 46-room hotel with a saloon and two bathing facilities, but he found few investors. The road to the springs was steep, treacherous, and tended to wash out in storms. Initially,
facilities were primitive. One newspaper described them as “redwood shanties.” Even these structures were swept away by fire in 1871. Curtiss then built a three-story hotel with a dining room, but business remained fitful, and in 1877 the county sheriff sold the property out from under Curtiss. During the ensuing decade, the springs had a number of owners. In 1878, room and meals cost $2 a day, and this included unlimited use of the springs. Water temperature varied from spring to spring, from a low of 60 degrees to a high of 122 degrees. It was claimed the waters were of great value in curing Bright’s disease, liver and bladder troubles, gout, rheumatism, and any number of skin diseases. For those who did not want to make the trip up the canyon to the springs, mineral water would be delivered right to your door. The arrival of the railroad to Santa Barbara in 1887 increased the number of visitors, but owners continued to come and go. In 1914, the site was transformed into the private Hot Springs Club with an entry fee of $5,000. Another wildfire broke out in October 1921, which completely consumed the club, but members rebuilt. When the Coyote Fire roared through the canyon in 1964, it was the last straw. There would be no more rebuilding. The area became part of Los Padres National Forest in 2013 after a fund drive by the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. Today hikers make the trek up the canyon to view the stone ruins and exotic plantings, the only remnants of the hot springs resorts.

f there’s any landscape architect in tune with the landscape design divide between Southern California and Northern California, it would have to be Rob Maday. A graduate of Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo’s College of Architecture & Environmental Design, Maday originally spent numerous years working with notable Santa Barbara–based landscape architects Grant Castleberg, Phil Suding, and Lane Goodkind before branching off in 2009 with his own firm, where he now designs alongside landscape architect Susan Raymond, designer Keir Smith, and master gardener Mackenzie Kroon. Rob Maday Landscape Architecture (RMLA) keeps offices locally—in downtown on Anacapa Street—and in the Bay Area, and while the majority of RMLA’s projects have been mostly residential, “we are slowly but surely getting more involved in commercial projects,” he said. In the last eight years, RMLA has tackled institutional projects for such clients as Apricot Lane Farms in Moorpark and commercial ones such as Oxnard-based Gills Onions. Maday lives in the Riviera with his wife and two kids, so as a landscape architect with a principal base in Santa Barbara, it’s hard for him not to feel the legacy of S.B.’s premier and pioneering landscape architect, Lockwood de Forest III, looming large on the local level. “Anybody in Santa Barbara [in this field] has to follow his work and the history here,” Maday said. “He created some iconic landscapes. You have to recognize it. They are very influential.” Maday does not see this as a negative.“I don’t think it’s a hindrance at all,” he said. “There’s certainly a downtown vernacular.
These are some of the people who helped form and grow Santa Barbara into what it is.” That said, Maday noted that his profession’s traditions really come from the other side of the country.“The architecture and the practice of it comes from the East Coast,” he said. California, nevertheless, represents great opportunity. “There’s a lot of opportunity for growth in the field when you have such a diverse landscape.” In Southern California, RMLA has worked for private residents living everywhere from Ventura to Encino to Laguna Beach (what he called “a funkadelic landscape in an eclectic neighborhood”). In the Bay Area, his clients are often venture capitalists and tech scenesters. Maday said that his S.F.-area projects invite “a whole different style of architecture.” If there’s a difference between the northern and southern part of the state, California’s persistent drought has definitely dampened things.“They live in a dif different type of landscape, a type of style,” he said.“Between the Bay Area and here, we’re more conscious of it. The community up there hasn’t acknowledged the drought like we have.” For Southern Californians, creating drought-sensitive gardens “is the new norm,” he continued. Back at home in Santa Barbara, Maday hasn’t encountered much pushback on a neighborhood level. “It has more to do with the client than the municipality,” he said. “The boards are more interested in quality design as opposed to style, as long as it’s in context with the neighborhood.” Sometimes in Santa Barbara, “the approval process is so onerous and cumbersome,” he said of design reviews, “it can be frustrating. It can add to the budget.” Overall though, Maday lauds “the great diversity of projects that are being approved [locally].” Maday also welcomes the challenges distinctive to projects of different scales and scope, depending on client budgets. “Oftentimes, we’re responding to different sites,” he said. “Part of it is climate; part of it is culture. The most enjoyable part of his job? “The different clients who appreciate what we’re doing,” he said. n
