ven though we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, I can’t seem to stay put very long. I love to travel, whether it’s for work, family events, or just the opportunity to discover someplace new or revisit a favorite destination. So far this year I’ve been to Boston, Louisville, Palm Springs, and Mexico. I appreciate the idea of a staycation, but I don’t seem to sit still long enough to make it happen. I may have found the perfect staycation motivation, however, when I visited the tropical oasis that is 1840 Barker Pass Road. This sublime haven is perched on Eucalyptus Hill, a neighborhood that sits on the edge of Montecito, with the hillside ambience of the Riviera. The home is surrounded by palm trees and lush vegetation, and feels secluded even though its only five minutes from town. I was taken by its verdant gardens before I even stepped foot in the house. A rustic wooden fence laden with blooming vines opens to allow visitors access to the boulder-lined driveways leading to the house. A curving walkway passes through a tranquil garden and up to the front door. The colors of the plants and trees in the yard — bright greens, deep purples, and pops of pink and blue — are complemented by the more muted gray and beige of the wood and stone landscaping elements and offer a foreshadowing of the creatively colorful house itself. I stepped through the front door into a foyer, with the kitchen to my left, living room to my right, and dining room straight ahead with a view out to the even more tropical backyard. I was tempted, but before venturing outside again, I wanted to explore the house, starting with the kitchen. In most houses, a kitchen this dynamic would undoubtedly be a focal point, but in this home, there’s so much to see that I almost walked right past. Periwinkle blue cabinets lead to a cozy dining nook with built-in benches and a view out to the front garden. Slate floors and recessed lighting, plus sparkling stainless-steel appliances, make this room feel at once elegant and gourmet yet also comfortable and cheery. Turning to the living room, I was greeted by big picture windows and warm hardwood floors. A white brick fireplace with a raised marble hearth and curved iron grate adds a playful note in the current spring weather and is no doubt even more welcoming in the winter months.

The living room leads into the master bedroom wing, which consists of the bedroom plus a sparkling bathroom with white tile, dual sinks, and glass-enclosed shower, and a huge, cedar-lined walk-in closet with built-ins galore. The other wing of the house, down a hallway past the kitchen, includes two bedrooms, another bathroom, and a den, in a configuration that lends itself well to a dual living situation. This wing even has a laundry room with a sink, plus two separate entrances to the front yard and backyard. Back in the living room, I was about to allow myself to explore the backyard, but first, I had two more rooms to check out. Behind the dining room is an indoor/outdoor bar room that is identified on the floorplan as a “servery.” With a counter for seating, a sink, and a wet bar, along with easy access to both the dining and living rooms as well as the backyard, this room is perfect for entertaining. Also adjacent is a bonus room with built-in cabinets, beamed cathedral ceilings, and French doors with wooden shutters. This room could function well as a family room, separate dining room, or even a gym or playroom. It is currently being used as an artist’s studio, for which the space, light, and ambience seem perfectly suited. As much as I love the color, character, and creativity of this house, there is no arguing that the pièce de résistance is the backyard. A saltwater pool and full-sized palapa with a fire pit in the center guarantee that a luau or pool party are just a few friends and frosty beverages away. The palapa offers seating for more than 20 people, with upholstered benches and an authentic thatched roof. There are also multiple dining areas, plus a spa, offering no shortage of places to relax. The lush landscaping that I admired in the front yard continues in the back of the house, with palms, ferns, bamboo, and more. As I wandered to explore a far corner of the yard, the sun peeked out from behind puffy white clouds to hint at the sunny hours that one could spend floating in the pool or lounging in the garden. As much as I love to travel, I’d be willing to cancel a few trips in order to make myself at home in this tropical oasis ready to host the perfect Santa Barbara staycation.

Music Academy of the West’s (MAW) 70th Summer School and Festival at an elegant and magical black-tie affair on its picturesque Miraflores Campus. Guests were greeted at the main entrance by MAW staff and a red carpet that extended along the entire magnificent, tree-lined promenade to Hahn Hall (a cleverly disguised driveway). Various Steinways were on display for the “Steinway Style” gala, which was also celebrating MAW’s attainment, with its 55 Steinways, of an All-Steinway School distinction from Steinway & Sons.

A Steinway Spirio player piano provided background music while glamorously attired guests mingled outside during the cocktail hour. Guests then adjourned to Hahn Hall for a spectacular concert featuring two worldrenowned Steinway Artists, Yuja Wang and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. In her customarily stylish but scanty attire, Wang, along with Thibaudet, performed brilliantly, especially in the duets. The concert marked the debut of MAW’s new Hamburg Model D Concert Grand piano. Dinner was served in the lovely Miraflores courtyard at dusk, with strategic lighting illuminating the gorgeous Marilyn Horne Main House and adjacent trees and with tower heaters keeping everyone toasty warm. Over a decadent three-course meal (I opted for the filet mignon with Béarnaise), Board Chair Marge Cafarelli welcomed the guests and thanked them for their support, which will go toward funding the full-scholarship program for all fellows at the Summer School, the $10 Community Access Tickets available for all MAW performances, and the 7-17 Program providing free tickets to all performances for children ages 7-17. Proceeds from this $1,000-per-ticket gala will also go toward the largest classical music event in Santa Barbara history: The performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony by the New York Philharmonic on July 31 in Santa Barbara City College’s La Playa Stadium. The concert will open with the MAW Festival Orchestra and conclude with fireworks over the ocean. More than 6,500

$10 and free tickets will be available for this incredible evening. President and CEO Scott Reed shared his excitement for MAW attaining its All-Steinway School distinction. Steinway & Sons Director of Sales Gavin English remarked that in partnering with MAW over the past seven years, he “always felt that we at Steinway had to raise our game to a whole new level. In my over 20 years in the music industry, I have never met a more dedicated and passionate staff than Scott Reed and his team.” Very few institutions in the world have attained an All-Steinway School distinction. Reed and English then jointly presented Shirley and Seymour Lehrer with the first-ever Key to Success Award for their vision, leadership, and investments. This season, which runs June 12-August 5, welcomes 137 fellows from around the world and nearly 70 guest artists and faculty members. Guest artists include superstars Renée Fleming, Matthew Aucoin, David Daniels, and Stephen Hough. Among the many esteemed faculty members are Jeremy Denk, Jerome Lowenthal, and Conor Hanick. There will be more than 200 master classes, recitals, performances, and other events, all open to the public.

T

his stone veneer Gothic Revival church was the third church to be built by the Trinity

Episcopal congregation, founded in 1866. After abandoning its first church when the Southern Pacific Railroad laid tracks at a noisome distance—and, after losing the second church, a rustic redwood building, to a fire in 1903—the congregation wisely chose to build its third church of native sandstone. Architect Philip Frohman, one of the designers of this English Perpendicular Gothic–influenced building, later gained recognition as the chief architect of the Washington, D.C., National Cathedral. Church records reveal that a sizeable mortgage incurred to build this monumental fireproof structure was speedily retired. In 1919, “the mortgage was burned with pomp, circumstance, and much celebrating.” The 1925 earthquake, however, tried the congregation’s patience once more when the east and west gables caved in and the tower was nearly demolished. After a delay of about a year, while Frohman revised the plans to include earthquake-resistant steel reinforcements, the church was reconstructed at a cost which exceeded the original. It is not known if the congregation engaged in a revelrous mortgageburning ceremony a second time. The building has undergone more structural retrofitting n over the years to meet current earthquake standards.

he town of Garey was a by-product of the California land boom of the 1880s. Located about 20 miles southeast of Santa Maria, it was to be a shipping point for agricultural produce and a center for the fruit orchard industry. Yet within a year of the town’s founding, all these dreams would be shattered. O.W. Maulsby was a self-made man who had the drive to translate his ideas and schemes into reality. He arrived in Santa Maria in 1884, in the midst of the aforementioned land boom. The development of rail lines and of the steamship was making the state ever more accessible. The state’s population soared in the 1880s, and speculation drove land prices ever higher. Maulsby planned to ride this wave of prosperity. Before his arrival, Maulsby had been involved in a number of successful land deals in the Los Angeles area. He now bought a tract of land near Solomon Peak, south of Santa Maria, and planted acre upon acre of olive trees, dubbing his new venture Olive Hill Orchards. Over the next few years, Maulsby, with a changing cast of partners, bought additional tracts near Santa Maria. On most of these, he planted different kinds of fruit trees, primarily apple. He also opened a real estate office in Santa Maria and started dabbling in land deals around town and in the Sisquoc area. He purchased a share of the Santa Maria Times so that he could publish articles extolling the virtues of the area. Maulsby also founded a booster club, similar to those he had seen in Los Angeles, to further publicize the glories of living in Santa Barbara’s North County.

As Maulsby formulated his plans to subdivide one of his properties, sell the lots, and found a town, he went further afield for financial backing. He returned to the Los Angeles area, where he looked up Thomas A. Garey of El Monte. Garey had come to California in 1852 and had made a name for himself as a horticulturalist and nurseryman, specializing in citrus. He was presently running a nursery on the Los Angeles River. Garey was also a civic booster and had been involved in developing Riverside and Pomona. He suggested Maulsby talk with E.E. Merritt, a division supervisor of the Southern Pacific (SP) Railroad. The company was at that time eyeing a route that would run through the Sisquoc area. Merritt indicated that if the SP could obtain right-ofway through the area at a reasonable cost, this would greatly boost the economic future of the proposed town. The deal was struck and a town site chosen in the Sisquoc Valley, where the SP surveyors were camping at the time. The new town was to be called Garey and the town’s namesake returned to Los Angeles to gather investors to put up anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 apiece. A holding company, the Santa Barbara County Land and Water Company, was formed, and Garey moved his entire Los Angeles nursery to northern Santa Barbara County. In 1889, the California land boom came to a crashing halt, and land prices plummeted. The Southern Pacific, faced with grading difficulties in the Sisquoc, ultimately decided to use the less difficult coastal route. With that decision went the hope of Garey developing into a boom town. According to the 2010 census, 68 people called Garey home.
