ummer Solstice is upon us, and our stereotypical Santa Barbara June gloom is in full force. Cloudy mornings give way to bright afternoons, with the sunshine often breaking through right about noon. June reminds us that she’s in charge of doling out the rays of sunshine on her own timetable. I was reminded of this when I pulled up outside a charming house on Santa Barbara’s Eastside last week just as the sun broke through. The property at 30 South Salinas Street is surrounded by a thick hedge, providing a buffer from the outside world and adding privacy to what lies within. Bright red bougainvillea frames the front gate, inviting visitors into a whimsical garden full of delights. I walked in and saw birdhouses, hanging plants, trellises, and statuary. A winding path led me to brick patios with fruit trees, seating areas, water elements, and a fire pit. The garden wraps all the way around the house, providing an oasis of outdoor living. I was enchanted by this fairy-tale scene, but the equally bright red front door broke the spell and lured me away from the magical garden and into the house itself. This home is filled with character, color, and light. Built in 1915, the California cottage retains many of its original details but has been updated through the years. The kitchen might be the best

example of the blend of old and new. It has stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and a breakfast bar in an open design. Yet it also has charming period cabinets

Tucked behind the kitchen is a full laundry room, complete with one of my favorite original features: a Dutch door leading outside, providing convenience as well as character. The living room is equally as captivating. Big, recessed windows grace the front and side walls, with window seats inviting guests to sit and admire the garden view. Arched doorways, high beamed ceilings, hardwood floors, and a big stone fireplace are just some of the living room’s other noteworthy details. The home is larger than many of similar style from the same era, with three bedrooms and two full baths, plus a dining room. Separate decks lead off of two of the bedrooms, extending the living space even further. The cottage at 30 South Salinas was a completely stand-alone home for many years, until 1984 when three condominium units were added behind it. It’s therefore currently part of a four-unit development charmingly dubbed Monkey Tree Court. I took one last tour through the house, and went out through the back door. As I stood on the deck outside the back bedroom, I realized that the sky was clear enough to see all the way down to the ocean. But even though the fog had lifted right on cue, I imagined that anyone lucky enough to live in this dreamy dwelling would spend the summer right here at home, in this magical garden oasis.

eDc celebrates 40 years of environmental Victories

O

n June 4, nearly 600 supporters of the Environmental Defense Center (EDC) celebrated the organization’s 40th anniversary at its annual Green and Blue fundraiser at Rancho La Patera & Stow House in Goleta. On this pleasant, sunny afternoon, guests sauntered around the lovely, expansive grounds, mingling and checking out the extensive silent auction offerings and enjoying music by Bruce Goldish, drinks, and tasty food.

In sharing how he views EDC’s never-ending work, Bailey quoted conservationist David Brower: “When we win, we have to win every time; they only have to win once.” He explained that once something is developed, it’s developed, but when EDC wins a victory, more challenges can lie ahead. In discussing EDC’s quest to preserve wildlife, Bailey said he views this area as “the Galapagos of North America,” and wants to make people aware of the impact of our collective actions on Boardmembers Mark Heintz, Judy Pirkowitsch (president), Renner Wunderlich, and Katy Allen endangered species. The Environmental Defense Center, working primarily retired 40 offshore oil leases; led a coalition in response in the tri-county area, engages in education, advocacy, and to the Refugio Oil Spill; and has played a lead role in prolegal action. Guests then were seated in an open-air tent where Board Vice President Dave Davis and Marine Conservation Program Director Kristen Hislop shared some of EDC’s more significant victories in the past couple of years. These included the denial by the San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors of the proposed Phillips 66 Rail Spur, two federal court rulings against the “No-Otter Zone,” and the decommissioning of Platform Holly. EDC had been working for years opposing the expansion of the platform. Auctioneer Jim Nye led an extensive live auction and then Executive Director Owen Bailey delivered an inspiring message of hope in these difficult times. He resolved that “while Washington is moving backwards, we are not going back.” Bailey emphasized “the important work being done at the state and local levels across the country, and the ability we have to make changes right here, in our home communities, that make a significant and lasting difference.” Chief Counsel Linda Krop thanked EDC’s founders, several of whom were at the event, including founding Executive Director Marc McGinnes and founding Boardmember Paul Relis. In an interview, Bailey shared how exciting a time this is—to be celebrating 40 years since the EDC was formed as a response to the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. Throughout this time period, EDC’s mission has remained constant: representing other nonprofit organizations. It is the only nonprofit public-interest environmental law firm between Los Angeles Boardmembers Dennis Allen and Rob Tadlock and San Francisco.

1933, and several other structures were later added to the property. Wack was very interested in music, especially opera, and he built a house for his piano accompanist so he could practice his singing. He also built a studio for Ethel. The Wacks became known for their parties; among those who performed were Leopold Stokowski and Ozzie Nelson with his swing band. The Wacks moved in 1942 to an estate better suited for raising horses, and Rancho El Bosque was sold to the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart to be used as a novitiate. Many of the buildings were given over to living space, and one wing of the main house became a chapel. In 1953, the sisters opened their complex to a Beverly Hills group, which held a retreat for married couples. In 1955, due to a generous donation, further living quarters, a new chapel, and dining facilities were completed, and La Casa de Maria, the first retreat facility in the country devoted to married couples, officially opened. Over the years, the purpose of La Casa expanded to include ecumenical religious, educational, and civic programs and conferences. This transformation from a retreat house for primarily Catholic couples to an interdenominational educational and religious learning center accelerated somewhat in 1969 when the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart ceased to be an official religious order of the church, becoming the Immaculate Heart Community. The community was open for membership to both men and women, marriage was allowed, and members could dress as they wished. Today, La Casa de Maria is an independent center, serving more than 10,000 people a year and with faith still at the core of its purpose.

igh in the Montecito hills, off of El Bosque Road, sits La Casa de Maria, an island of serenity and calm in an increasingly fast-paced world. This former citrus ranch is today a retreat and conference center offering a variety of programs for those of troubled mind and spirit. In 1886, Richard Hoge of Montana purchased 20 acres from the owners of the San Ysidro Ranch for a lemon ranch, which he christened El Prado (The Meadow). Here he farmed successfully before selling to E. J. Miley in 1924, a building contractor who also made a sizeable fortune in Kern County oil. Miley engaged Mary Craig to design a new home for his Rancho El Bosque. Among her many Santa Barbara commissions, perhaps her best known is Plaza Rubio, the small subdivision facing the Mission Rose Garden. Construction proceeded slowly, for Miley wanted the house made of handhewn stone drawn from the local creeks. Miley also imported stone and tile from various European sources to enhance his showcase. The onset of the Great Depression in 1929 dealt Miley’s fortunes a severe blow, and in 1932 he was forced to sell the partially finished house to John and Ethel de Blois Wack. Wack was a successful Wall Street investor and an avid horseman and aviator. As a young man, he had been an editor for Field and Stream magazine, which his father cofounded. Ethel, whom he married in 1923, was a respected portrait painter, champion golfer, and aviator. The couple flew their plane all over North America, often checking on their Arizona cattle operation. Working with architect Chester Carjola, the Wacks completed the house in

aniel Hill, an early Yankee immigrant to Santa Barbara, built this adobe for his Californio bride, Rafaela Luisa Ortega. It is said to have had the first wooden floor in the pueblo. In addition, the first child of Anglo-American parents to be born in Santa Barbara was born here to Rachel Holmes and Thomas Oliver Larkin. The subsequent owner, Captain John D. Wilson, was in the fur trade and evidently was not a particularly literate man as can be seen in the following from a letter to Larkin in 1842: “I recevud your Litter before I laft St Barbara regarden the otter skins thair is now one hundred & four Skins in St Barbara all good Blak ones inded the beast lot that has been got. …” Nonetheless, Wilson and his wife, Ramona, made their adobe one of the centers of social life in Mexican Santa Barbara. Later it served as a daguerreotype shop, a makeshift City Council meeting room, and the residence of Guillermo and Joaquin Carrillo. Mrs. Fiske Hammond repaired the house and remodeled the grounds in 1919. In 1928, the adobe was scheduled to be demolished for a motion picture theater. Max C. Fleischmann, one of Santa Barbara’s premier philanthropists, saw the historic value n of the adobe and stepped in to ensure its preservation.
