Hospice Holds inaugural

Shining light Society event

O

n June 17, Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) held its inaugural event for its new Shining Light Society at the lovely Hope Ranch home of Dr. Stephen Hosea. HSB created the society to recognize major donors who have helped “shine a light” into the darkness for those dealing with a serious illness or grieving the loss of a loved one.

Founded in 1974, HSB addresses the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual suffering of those impacted by serious illness or grieving the death of a loved one. Unlike a medical-model hospice, HSB serves people regardless of diagnosis, treatment choices, or life expectancy. All of its services are free to anyone in the community. HSB provides care management, counseling, mentorship, and compassionate care to adults and children. It works closely with agencies providing nursing care. For the event, about 50 guests gathered on the picturesque grounds of Dr. Hosea’s home overlooking La Cumbre Country Club’s golf course. Organized by HSB ambassadors Gerd Jordano, Linda Yawitz, and Mary Blair, the event featured an extended reception hour and a mov-

ing program. CEO David Selberg thanked the supporters and noted that, in 2016, HSB served more than 1,200 people through its adult and children’s bereavement and patient care programs and that the demand for its services has increased even more this year. Selberg shared that its Community Engagement and Education Program served more than 5,000 people last year. This program has various components, which are also all offered free of charge. HSB reaches out to schools, organizations, government entities, and businesses that have suffered a loss to assist them in coping with grief. It does professional training for staff at organizations and law enforcement entities that deal with grieving and death. It also provides general education about end-of-life topics to all types of organizations. Boardmember Mike McGrew, a retired police sergeant, related how he was introduced to HSB when his 12-yearold son was diagnosed with bone cancer. He shared how HSB saved him and because of the amazing help he received, he wants to do as much as he can for this community. McGrew noted that HSB is helping people every

day in ways that words cannot even describe and that it was “the help you gave me that allows me to stand here on Father’s Day weekend and talk about the loss of my son.” HSB’s policy of not charging for its services stems from a belief that these services are a community responsibility. According to Director of Strategic Advancement Charles Caldwell, at a time when families are facing incredible upheaval as well as emotional, psychological, and spiritual turmoil, HSB thinks it best to simply not have payment be part of the equation. Its motto is “Compassionate care ... Freely Given.” How fortunate Santa Barbara is to have this organization and the donors who support it. Hospice of Santa Barbara is always in need of donations and volunteers. The next volunteer training starts on October 4.

randdaughter to the founder of the Circle Bar B Guest Ranch & Stables in Goleta, Susan Spieler grew up cleaning guest rooms and observing the interworking of rustic interior design. She thought, “One day, I am going to design these.” And design she did. Beginning an internship under renowned interior designer Richard Byers in 1984, Spieler drafted carpet layouts for athletes’ dormitories in the 1984 UCSB Olympic Village. Following her graduation from Cal Poly, Spieler worked for Richard Byers Interiors for four more years before going on to leave her own mark Blue Sands Inn on the world of interior design. Spieler Interior Design Associates (spielerinteriordesign.com) was launched in 1989 with a vision and unique style in mind, but Susan never felt pressured to stay within the lines of stereotypical interior motifs. “I use color differently than people expect. Lights and darks according to the needs of the space,” she said. While avant-garde, Spieler’s designs remain classic. “Our current generation likes streamlined designs with a hint or a nod to the past. Mid-century modern is really retro, but not fussy or cluttered. That’s because of technology. Everything is so streamlined so interiors have become streamlined as well.” Spieler also relishes her use of color and mood. She believes color to be very important in the implementation of interior design, understanding the connections between color and emotion. She enjoys getting to know her clients in order to fully recognize the interior that fits a particular personality. She orders custom fabrics from Los Angeles, mixing the right proportion of modern and classic techniques to execute her designs.

Throughout her career, Spieler has worked on a variety of commercial and residential projects including her own 55-room hotel in San Simeon, a bed-andbreakfast in Santa Barbara, and even a 16-seat home theater, working with area companies like AD Construction and Kathryn Dole Landscape Architects to accomplish her goals. A current project, the Blue Sands Inn, features 12 rooms on beach-area property. The project incorporates area artists, eco-friendly designs, and a relaxed atmosphere. The Blue Sands Inn opens in Santa Barbara this coming August. Creative and adaptable, Susan Spieler possesses a vigorous passion for interior design. She wants people to know that interior design can be affordable because you receive proper selection of materials and the utmost functionality. Spieler’s talents are versatile, and she tackles interior design challenges with a vengeance. Whether she’s working off an existing design or starting from scratch, Spieler is able to capture functionality and innovan tion in all her endeavors.

tone has been a timehonored building material in Santa Barbara since the earliest days of the city. Wood was never in great supply. Although the region was dotted with thousands of oak trees, their twisted trunks and branches did not make for useable lumber. Early settlers turned to other building materials during the Spanish and Mexican eras — adobe, primarily, but also stone. Stone, especially sandstone, was readily at hand in the creek beds and canyons. The outstanding example of stone craft dating from the Spanish period is the Santa Barbara Mission.
