House full of Happy Memories I

t’s easy to fall in love with the Craftsman bungalow for sale at 501 Orena Street. The house is located just around the corner from the Mission Rose Garden, on a hillside right above Roosevelt Elementary School. It has charming period details like pocket doors, gleaming fir floors, wainscoting, and leaded glass windows. With a screened porch on the side and a large patio out back, it’s a great house for indoor-outdoor entertaining. I know this home well because my friend Susan and her husband, Evan, raised their daughters, Rachel and Sophie, in this idyllic hillside bungalow. Hearing Susan’s stories of the laughter and love their family has shared makes every beam, window, and nook come to life. The family history melds with the history of the land, the neighborhood, and the house itself to create a complete picture of this happy home. This upper east neighborhood was originally part of the mission lands, and the hillside the house is on was planted in vineyards. This subdivision to the City of Santa Barbara was filed in 1903 and known as Las Piedras, which is Spanish for “the stones.” Susan jokes that you can’t stick a shovel in the ground in this area without hitting a sandstone boulder, which is why it boasts so many of the city’s iconic sandstone walls and foundations. The house is shown on a 1907 city fire insurance map, and a 1920 record shows that it was occupied by R.B. Kidd, who is identified as the chauffeur for the minister of the Presbyterian Church. Susan and her husband bought the house in 1991 from Elizabeth McIntyre, who grew up next door. Mr. and Mrs. Kidd had no children, and “Betty” took care of Mrs. Kidd in her later years. When Mrs. Kidd passed away, she left the house to Betty, whose own children were adults. Susan and Evan were therefore only the third owners of the house, and Rachel and Sophie were the first children to live here. The house was originally two bedrooms and one “Jack and Jill” bathroom shared by the bedrooms on either side

of it. Susan recalls that the girls would chase each other in a perfect circle, from living room into dining room into bedroom into bathroom into bedroom and back into living room. After their youngest, Sophie, was born, they demolished the bathroom and built two brand-new bathrooms back-to-back, so each bedroom has its own bath. They also pushed out the window wall in the girls’

bedroom to accommodate two desks, which Susan says were never used because the girls always wanted to do their homework at the kitchen table. When their daughters entered high school, a rear wing with two bedrooms and another full bathroom was added. Evan is a master craftsman and did much of the work himself. Susan has plenty of stories about raising her family in this house. “We always took the girls to Fiesta opening night at the Mission, with a picnic basket filled with Lito’s burritos and chips. We will miss our evening glass of wine while watching the sunset on the screened porch above Emerson Avenue. It is surrounded by two rare species of eucalyptus, so it feels like you’re sitting in a tree house. We celebrated countless birthdays in this house, as well as hosting our famous annual holiday party. The shoulder-to-shoulder party was always so much fun because the guest list included friends, the girls’ friends, our coworkers, neighbors, and even strangers, because the door was always

This became one of our most beloved family traditions.” Living next door to the elementary school also conjured up fond memories of watching Rachel and Sophie walk to school each morning from their porch facing Emerson Avenue. Susan says they could literally see the girls walk into their classrooms, which at the time were portable buildings. “They would stop at their classroom doors [and] look up to the house, and we would wave to them from the porch. It would always choke me up. Watching your kids grow up will do that, I guess.” The home at 501 Orena Street echoes with the memories they made in their many years here. As their family moves on to new adventures, its next lucky owners will be able to continue the stories of this beautiful home and make memories of their own.

DaWG celebrates the all-american Dog

O

n July 2, more than 100 happy supporters of DAWG (Dog Adoption & Welfare Group), many with four-legged friends at their side, gathered at Elings Park to celebrate “the allAmerican dog.” Proceeds benefited the lost and abandoned dogs at DAWG.

In the picturesque, off-leash setting of Singleton Pavilion, Spencer the Gardener provided the tunes and volunteers served up a tasty, all-American barbecue lunch with all the fixings and accompaniments. Contests were held throughout the afternoon, including for the most patriotic dog costume, which inspired many amusing red, white, and blue canine outfits. Atlas Rehabilitation for Canines, which recently opened on upper State Street, was on hand with some of its equipment for canine guests to try out. DAWG’s mission is to reduce the rate of euthanasia in area shelters by providing the medical care and training many dogs need to become adoption-ready. In its 25-year history, DAWG has rescued more than 8,000 dogs. In recent years, it has rescued 200-400 dogs per year, with most of its dogs coming from the three branches of Santa Barbara County Animal Services. The county does not charge DAWG for the land upon which DAWG has built its facilities or for utilities. In return, DAWG takes in dogs from the county to reduce the county’s euthanasia rate. DAWG has a veterinarian and trainer on staff, who work as a team to address medical and behavioral issues to transform dogs who are ill and/or who have behavioral issues into adoption-ready dogs. Other than the free rent and utilities, DAWG does not receive any government assistance. Its lean staff of 10 is supplemented by a host of volunteers and it is dependent on private donations for its operating expenses. Chief Veterinarian Carl Zaboly explained how without DAWG, many dogs would have been euthanized over the years, but with DAWG’s team approach of providing medical care and behavioral training, it has been able to help these dogs such that they can be placed in loving homes. When the care that is required goes beyond what DAWG can provide, it works with area veterinarians, all of whom provide a discount. It has gone as far as UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine when necessary for the proper care. DAWG never euthanizes a dog except where an untreatable medical condition makes the quality of life unacceptable.

This was but one in a series of events DAWG is holding this year to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Last month it held a formal tea party with a psychic, and among its upcoming events is Pub Night on July 29 in a 500-yearold English pub reconstructed in Montecito. Ferragamo’s First U.s. shoe store opened on state street F

erragamo is one of the most renowned names in high-fashion footwear. Born in Italy, Salvatore Ferragamo became the “shoemaker of dreams” in Hollywood, designing for films and privately for the stars. He eventually returned to Italy and built a company whose name became synonymous with quality and style. Salvatore was born in the small village of Bonito in southern Italy in 1898. The modest Ferragamo farm could scarcely sustain the family of 14 children. It was a life Salvatore wanted to escape; he wanted to be a cobbler. He befriended a shoemaker in Bonito despite his parents’ misgivings. According to his autobiography, the young man first showed off his acquired skills on the occasion of one of his sisters’ First Communion. The family could not afford the traditional white shoes for the ceremony, so Salvatore made a pair. The family relented and allowed him to become an apprentice. In 1909, Ferragamo moved to Naples, the largest and most sophisticated city in southern Italy. Although only 11, he stayed for several months, soaking up all he could of the craftsman’s art. Upon his return to Bonito, he opened his own shop. Ferragamo was now a successful small businessman even before he reached his teens, employing six people in his shop. He was still not satisfied. In 1914, he joined the wave of emigration from Italy to the United States. One of his older brothers, Alfonso, had written glowing reports of his life in America. He was working in Boston for one of the largest shoe factories in the country. Salvatore’s high expectations were dashed, however, upon his arrival. He later wrote that American shoes were

“heavy, clumsy, and brutal.” A factory was no place for a craftsman. He moved to the West Coast, where other siblings had settled. He came to Santa Barbara, where an older brother, Girolamo (Jerome), was working in a tailoring shop. Salvatore and Girolamo were soon joined by their eldest brother, Secondino. Girolamo secured a position as a suit presser for the Flying A Studio, one of the largest movie-making concerns in the country. He knew that the studio’s demand for shoes and boots was immense and saw an opportunity for his brothers. He arranged a tour and, soon after, Salvatore and Secondino opened Ferragamo Bros. at 1033 State Street. Another brother, Eliodoro, arrived from Italy in 1917. It was a tiny shop, but the business flourished. The brothers received many orders from the studio, as well as general repair work and even some custom manufacturing orders. The Ferragamos ended up buying a home at 719 California Street, up near St. Francis Hospital, in 1919. Salvatore undertook a rigorous education program to better himself. He enrolled in night school to improve his English. He drove to USC to take evening classes in anatomy. He took correspondence courses in chemical engineering and math — all to give him the skills and knowledge needed to make fine, custom footwear. The closure of the Flying A Studio in the summer of 1920 forced Ferragamo Bros. to reemphasize shoe repair at the expense of manufacturing. Dissatisfied, Salvatore once again decided to move on. In the spring of 1923, the family opened a shop in Hollywood. Salvatore Ferragamo’s career as “shoemaker to the stars” was about to begin in earnest.
