Make Myself at HOMe

by Sarah Sinclair

Romantic Hideaway in Mission Canyon W ell, it happened. After two years of visiting open houses each week, choosing one to write about every Thursday, and talking to friends in the real estate business just about every day, I fell in love with a house that I couldn’t resist. The stars aligned, the numbers aligned, and now, as of just this week, I am once again a homeowner. Next week I will move from a one-bedroom cottage downtown to MY one-bedroom cottage downtown. And I couldn’t be happier. However, just because I’m spoken for doesn’t mean I can’t check out the available properties that are on the market. I’m committing myself to love and cherish my little craftsman bungalow, to care for it in sickness and in health. But a girl can still dream about hilltop hideaways and Montecito mansions. We have no shortage of fantasyworthy properties in our community, and I’ll share every notable nook and delightful detail. One such dream home is 2150 Las Canoas Road. Like my new place, it’s a one-bedroom house, but that’s about where the similarity ends. This home is perched on a hillside up above Las Canoas Road, in Mission Canyon. Driving the winding route to get there takes one past the Mission, the Museum of Natural History, and almost to the Botanic Garden. Pulling up to the huge oak tree in front of the house, it’s easy to forget that you’re only a few miles from State Street, because the privacy and quiet setting make it feel worlds away. Two winding pathways lead up to the house, both equally inviting. I chose the path to the front entryway, stepped inside, and found myself in a living room that felt at once cozy and yet also spacious. My gaze automatically fell to the far wall, where two built-in bookcases framed a striking floor-to-ceiling steel window, showcasing a view over the treetops all the way down to the ocean. The window itself is a work of art, with a curved top and multipaned face, and one round porthole-style window sitting above it at the peak of the roof. The ceiling has hefty, rough, wooden rafter accents, and a commanding fireplace against the other wall anchors the room. Tearing myself away from the view, I walked to my right, into the kitchen, which is open to the living room, form-

ing one great space. The kitchen sports sleek gray cabinets with monochromatic Viking appliances in a subtle, modern space. One side of the U-shaped area is a long counter that can function as a breakfast bar or prep surface. It’s a cool, subdued room that humbly offers its gourmet features

while letting the living room take the glory. Both rooms have rustic cement floors that disguise their water-powered radiant heating. In fact, since the house was built in 2014, it has energy-efficient and high-tech conveniences throughout. Up a few stairs, past one charming bathroom, lies the bedroom. To call it the master bedroom seems silly since it’s the only bedroom in the house, but this romantic space certainly feels like a room of distinction. His-and-hers bathrooms extend off either side of the bedroom. “His” bathroom shower has a floor made of river rocks, while the showpiece of “hers” is a unique, freestanding bathtub made of steel and porcelain. Beyond lies a huge walk-in closet with custom cabinetry. A set of glass-paned steel French doors open off the bedroom onto a completely private garden, one of many outdoor spaces that surround the house, showcasing the naturally beautiful setting. On my way out, I kept noticing decorative details that mirrored my style: a white sparrow

address: 2150 Las Canoas Road status: On the market price: $1,735,000 statue perched on a windowsill, a faded oriental rug in the bathroom. Back in the living room, I couldn’t help but ask about the mesmerizing chandelier hanging from the ceiling in the center of the room. Crystal droplets dangle from a central gold frame, providing a glamorous sparkle, but with strong, sturdy bones. It is at once feminine and brash, beautiful and bold. I was told that the owner of the house rescued the fixture from the May Madness rummage sale held annually at the Music Academy of the West and painted it to create its unexpected golden glow. Learning a bit of the history behind the decor of this handsome home made me love 2150 Las Canoas Road even more. I drove back down the hill, smiling and thinking about both houses, and hopeful that, given a little time, creativity, and TLC, my cottage might soon feel like my castle, too.

2150 Las Canoas Road is currently for sale in Santa Barbara, listed by Joyce Enright of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. Reach Joyce at 570-1360 or joycee@bhhscal.com.

Adrienne Schuele — a leader in Santa Barbara & Hope Ranch real estate for over 28 Years

“I have bought and sold homes in Hope Ranch with Adrienne Schuele as my agent. In short, she is my ‘agent for life’. In every transaction, Adrienne went above and beyond any realtor I have used in the past 40 years. The process is not disruptive in the least. Both sides of the transactions walked away pleased. Adrienne’s vast network of friends and clients found me my last home. She contacted some people that were thinking of selling, found them the home of their dreams, and I bought theirs, the home of my dreams. Adrienne structured the whole transaction and we are all very happy with the process and outcome. With 40 years of buying and selling real estate, when I say Adrienne is my ‘agent for life’, I mean it.”

Doctors Without Walls launches Glow in the Park

O

n Thursday, July 20, about 75 supporters of Doctors Without Walls – Santa Barbara Street Medicine (DWW) gathered at the Squire Foundation for the launch of the September 16 Glow in the Park fundraiser, where guests will dine at Elings Park and indulge in hot-air balloon rides. DWW provides health care to homeless and low-income individuals.

Hosted by the Armand Hammer Foundation and the Squire Foundation, the event began with an alfresco reception on the stunning grounds dotted with Morris Squire’s eclectic sculptures. Guests then entered the equally stunning building where Board President Paul Jaconette (COO, CenCal Health) welcomed the guests and explained that to end homelessness, getting people healthy is essential—if a person isn’t healthy, he cannot be a productive member of society. Jaconette shared that the demand for DWW’s services is growing, but the organization’s expansion is constrained by its limited resources. He encouraged everyone to visit the clinics to see the work and hear people’s stories, an experience that will reveal that many of the folks are just like them, except that adverse circumstances have led to their homelessness. In an interview, Fire Chief Pat McElroy, a new boardmember, shared that he wanted to join the board because as a firefighter he has been dealing with the homeless for years, has known people who have become homeless, and recognizes that this is a super-underserved population. McElroy noted that DWW’s work helps the community at large because without the organization, the homeless would otherwise be using fire and other emergency services. By

taking care of the homeless, DWW improves the health of the whole community. DWW sets up mobile medical clinics each week in Pershing Park and Alameda Park, where its volunteer physicians, other health-care providers, and premed students serve homeless and low-income individuals. Recognizing the special needs of homeless women, DWW also operates the Women’s Free Homeless Clinic at Transition House three Fridays per month. Staffed by an internist, podiatrist, and other health-care professionals, the clinic offers medical care and Boardmembers Dr. Kayla Rosen and S.B. Montecito Country Club, designed by Bertram Goodhue

bertram goodhue’s Montecito Country Club I

n the summer of 1916, officials of the Santa Barbara Country Club (the name changed to Montecito Country Club in 1922) engaged the services of architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue to design the club’s fourth and final clubhouse. Sitting high on a hill just west of Hot Springs Road, the clubhouse engendered some controversy while its high cost almost spelled the end of the club. Goodhue was born in 1869 to a Connecticut family that could trace its origins back to the Mayflower. Bertram’s mother was a talented artist, and she and her eldest son shared a studio in the family home. As early as age 9, Goodhue expressed his ambition to be an architect. Forgoing college, at 15 he became an apprentice at a prestigious New York firm where he honed his skills copying senior architects’ drawings, vital in the days before copy machines. For this he was paid all of $5 a month, which was actually more than apprentices often received. In 1891, Goodhue enjoyed his first breakthrough when he won a competition for a cathedral design in Dallas. The following year he traveled through Mexico and became entranced by that country’s architecture. The effects of these travels can be seen in much of his later work. Goodhue’s first contact with this area occurred when J. Waldron Gillespie hired him to design his Montecito estate, El Fureidis, in 1901. In 1902, the two journeyed around the world together to gather inspiration for the project. Completed in 1906, the estate, a wonderful mix of Spanish, Italian, and Persian influences, was one of the most magnificent achievements in this affluent community where magnificence was almost commonplace.

This was an especially creative time for Goodhue. In 1902, the firm at which he was a partner received the commission to redesign the Military Academy at West Point. This led Goodhue to relocate to New York, where he eventually opened his own firm in 1914. It was during this period that he developed a reputation as an architect of churches, designing places of worship for New York, Pittsburgh, and Havana. A new phase of his career opened in 1911 when he was chosen as architect for the Panama-California Exposition, to take place in San Diego in 1915. His designs were a triumph, and his work gets much credit for popularizing Spanish Colonial architecture in California. His California Building, with its tiled dome, is still the crown jewel of the city’s Balboa Park today. Goodhue continued to be active here. He designed the Montecito home and grounds of Henry Dater Jr., completed in 1918. This estate later became Val Verde, the home of Wright Ludington. His design for the Montecito Country Club, with its three-story tower, was very much reminiscent of his church designs. The crushing debt resulting from construction cost overruns led to the closure of the club in 1921, before its reorganization under its present name and 1922 reopening. Other notable Goodhue works include the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.; the Los Angeles Central Library; the Nebraska State Capitol; and the entire company town of Tyrone, New Mexico. Just as he was preparing to journey to Washington for the dedication of the Academy of Sciences building, he was felled by a heart attack in April 1924. He was five days short of his 55th birthday.

St. vincent’s orphanage and School; knights of Columbus hall

T

address: 925 De la Vina Street architects: 1874-1875, A. Marquis; 1983, Rolly Pulaski, AIA

he Knights of Columbus Hall is generally considered to be Santa Barbara’s finest surviving Anglo-American-style building of the 19th century. It was constructed in 1874-1875 by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul as a girls’ school. The sisters had arrived in Santa Barbara from their Provincial House in Emmitsburg, Maryland, in 1858 and were originally housed in the Aguirre Adobe (see entry #141). There, the predominantly Catholic-Irish sisters ran a day and boarding school for the predominantly Catholic-Hispanic children of the town. In the 1860s, the school acquired the Cieneguitas Ranch, then located beyond the edge of town. The tuition at the school was $150 per year, payable half-yearly in advance. In 1869-1870, a school building was constructed on the site, only to burn down in 1874. Funds from the motherhouse in Maryland allowed construction of a new building to begin immediately. This structure was originally three stories high and of Italianate design. The third story was removed after the 1925 earthquake. Fortunately, the children had been moved the previous year to a new school building on the ranch. The local Knights of Columbus council occupied the building from 1924 to 1980. The building has undergone extensive internal renovation and has become a desirable office location, assuring its preservation. Architecturally, this edifice is a good example of the Italianate style popular in the 1860s and 1870s, with emphasis on the vertical, recessed windows beneath segmental flat hoods, a prominent cornice, and a projecting and pedimented entrance porch. There are two large sandstone hitching blocks on the De la n Vina Street frontage, a prominent reminder of the days before automobiles.
