I

f you Google 415 West Haley Street in Santa Barbara, you’ll find yourself near the intersection of Castillo and Haley streets, between the DMV parking lot, the northbound freeway onramp, and the terminally troublesome, currently closed section of Castillo that passes under the freeway. There’s no actual structure at 415 West Haley, at least not anymore. But once upon a time, an adorable Queen Anne cottage held court at that spot. The same cottage now sits at 1601 Gillespie Street, right next door to an elementary school, in a residential neighborhood on Santa Barbara’s Westside. Built at the turn of the century, this home was moved to its current location in 1935. The house is as cute as can be. Walking through the front gate, I stopped in my tracks to pause and take in all of its ornamental details. It has a tall façade, with a steeply pitched roof decorated with fish-scale-style siding and gingerbread trim. The front porch railing and front door have rows of elegant turned spindles. The eaves have decorative green brackets peeking out from below the creamy yellow exterior of the house. In fact, the striking color palette is a joyful theme repeated throughout the home. Once I walked inside, I found myself oohing and aahing over the color choices as I walked from room to room and had my attention diverted at each new hue. From the front door, a golden hallway greets visitors with an immediate pop of color and soaring 11-foot ceilings. The living room is immediately on the left, sporting a natural brick fireplace with a detailed, mirrored white surround and wide bay windows looking out the front of the house. The bedrooms sit to the right of the hallway. Both contain the wainscoting and period window and door frames found throughout the house, with carved detailing emphasizing the gorgeous oversized vertical windows and tall ceilings. The large full dining room continues the Victorian stylings and has built-in cabinets and cupboards. Gleaming hardwood floors shine in every room.

The kitchen of 1601 Gillespie is one of my favorite rooms, with soft turquoise walls and bright blue tile set off by stark white trim, and a minimalist feel. A separate walkin pantry is graced with custom shelves and hanging racks, making both efficient and charming use of the space. I told you the house is cute as can be—and this corner nook is the cutest of the cute. Continuing through the back door, I was surprised to step out onto an unexpectedly large back deck in a private oasis of a yard. As cozy as this residential neighborhood feels, this spacious backyard is perfect for secluded dinner parties and entertaining. There is a separate outbuilding for storage or hobbies, too. Standing on the deck looking over the top of the house toward the street, I was delighted to see a row of palm trees standing like sentinels above the roofline. I had noticed the palms before I walked into the house, but see-

ing them from this angle, framing the top of the house, was one additional pleasing sight of shape, color, and symmetry in this house full of patterns inside and out. They couldn’t have chosen a sweeter spot to plant 1601 Gillespie when they chose its new location in this fairy tale that’s certain to have a happily ever after.

n July 22, about 250 members of the Santa Barbara

Historical Museum and their guests celebrated Old Spanish Days in style at the annual Fiesta del Museo. This refined, jovial, and entertaining affair raised funds for the museum’s programs and operations. Most women donned elegant Fiesta gowns, while men opted for formal Spanish suits or Western attire. The museum’s courtyards provided a beautiful and historically fitting setting for the event. During the cocktail hour in the museum’s lower courtyard, Mariachi las Olas de Santa Barbara provided lively music and Junior Spirit of Fiesta Eve Flores performed the rumba “Échale Azúcar” (“Pour Some Sugar on It”), which was as sweet as it sounds. Dinner was served in the striking main courtyard, where rich, white chiffon drapery panels were strung overhead to create a warm, festive feel and house fun paper flowers and tiny white lights that softly illuminated the venue as the sun set. Black and red English lace overlays graced the linencovered tables to complete the classic, colorful Fiesta look. Over a delicious three-course meal, Spirit of Fiesta Norma Escárcega performed a beautiful flamenco piece,

Warren and Marlene Miller. Marlene led the capital campaign for and curated the Historical Museum’s Edward Borein exhibit.

“La Primavera,” and Timo Nuñez, a finalist on NBC’s World of Dance, gave a dramatic, mesmerizing flamenco performance. Erika Martin del Campo, the 2010 Spirit of Fiesta, hosted an entertaining fashion show featuring colorful Western wear from the Historical Museum’s own collection and from the Carriage and Western Art Museum. This included a sky-blue rhinestone-studded suit made by Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors, owned by Fritz Grossenbacher, and modeled by flamenco dancer Matthew Escárcega, while the strains of Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy” filled the courtyard. The show also featured historical fans from the Historical Museum’s collection, modeled by dancers from the Linda Vega Dance Studio and Zermeño Dance Academy. Fun narration explained how fans were a means of subtle communication: For example, slow movement Fiesta Press Chair David Bolton and Mayor Helene Schneider means “I’m engaged,” and rapid movement means “I’m married.” John Eubanks led a Western-style auction, and then the band Elements took to the stage and guests danced into the night. The museum stayed open throughout the event for guests to experience the exhibits. The museum’s permanent collection includes the recently opened Edward Borein Gallery, featuring some of this highly acclaimed Western artist’s best paintings and a large collection of his etchings. Also open is the In the Saddle exhibit, featuring saddles from legendary makers along with attire, artwork, and stories of our region’s equestrian culture. There is also the popular Missions of Edwin Deakin exhibit, featuring the artist’s watercolors of the 21 California missions. The museum, which strives to make history as engaging as possible, has exhibits and experiences for all ages. Vaquero is a horse-mounted livestock herder of a tradition that originated on the Iberian Peninsula. Today, the vaquero is still a part of the Doma Vaquera, the Spanish tradition from which all the working riding styles of the Americas, and many of those of Europe, are derived. The vaquero traditions developed in Mexico from methodology brought to Mesoamerica from Spain also became the foundation for the North American cowboy. Cowboys of the Great Basin still use the term Buckaroo, which is likely derived from vaquero, to describe themselves and their tradition.

Fiesta Diversión If you feel like you're not in the mood for Fiesta or you're going to rain on someone's parade, then you need some Santa Barbara sunshine on your face and to follow these four easy steps. 1. Put on your vaquero hat and turn the music up 2. Guacamole

INGREDIENTS 3 large, ripe avocados ¼ cup red onion, finely diced ¼ cup Roma tomatoes, finely diced ¼ cup cilantro leaves, chopped (no stems) 1 jalapeño or Serrano chile (about 1 tbsp.), finely diced ½ tsp. sea salt (or maybe a little bit more!) 1 tbsp. lime juice, squeeze the juice from 3 key limes Cilantro leaves on stems (optional garnish)

INGREDIENTS 2 oz. blanco or repasado tequila 1 oz. lime juice ¾ oz. Cointreau ¼ oz. agave nectar Himalayan salt Ice

PREPARATION Using a knife or avocado tool, slice avocados in half. Reserve the pits for later. Remove the peels and place the avocado in a bowl. Mash the avocados in the bowl until the consistency is smooth with just a few small lumps. Add remaining ingredients to the bowl. Gently fold all ingredients together. If serving guacamole as an appetizer, transfer guacamole to the molcajete. Garnish with a few cilantro leaves on stems, or a sprinkling of Mexican Cojita cheese. Serve guacamole with restaurant-style tortilla chips.

PREPARATION If you prefer a salted rim, rub the rim of your glass with lime juice. Dip the rim into a plate of Himalayan salt until it is covered with salt. Measure tequila, lime juice, Cointreau, and agave nectar into a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake. Pour through the strainer into a glass of ice. Enjoy!

What guiding principles inspire your work? Bruce: Always sit at the bar and always talk to strangers. My mother taught me not to do either and she was wrong. I tell my grandchildren when they are old enough they should always sit at the bar and always talk to strangers; their parents roll their eyes. Erin: Transparency, communication, and thorough competency. If I don't know the answer to something, I'll find out.

After military service, Bruce set records in college fundraising and simultaneously enjoyed great success in door-to-door cookware sales. That lead to the opportunity to assist a friend/mentor in New Zealand and later in Sweden founding Oriflame Cosmetics. After Sweden he joined IBM as a salesperson and was promoted to sales training and eventually sales management in San Francisco. After ten years with IBM he joined Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate, a journey which eventually brought him to Santa Barbara residential sales in 1996.

If you could be any celebrity, who would you be? Bruce: George Clooney Erin: I would be a celebrity Realtor with a TV show ;-) What philosophy do you live by? Bruce: Show up, have fun, be here now. Erin Muslera After earning an electrical engineering degree from the University of Evansville (IN), Erin was drawn to the West coast, kickstarting her software career in Seattle, Washington. Commission sales saved me; nobody fires a commission salesman. Erin: The summer after my freshman year of college when I worked in a factory in Indiana. Not only did I wear a hard hat and steel-toed boots, I was actually working in the factory where there was no AC and my boss was a step-uncle who got a very big kick out of giving me all the worst tasks.

y volume, 80 percent of global trade travels the oceans in cargo ships, producing 3 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Our TVs, cell phones, clothes, household furnishings, etc. all move through this system. Because the accompanying emissions are significant, changes are starting to happen to curb their climate impact — in vessel design, choice of materials, operational strategies, and port regulations. Larger and longer ships are proving to be more efficient. Adding ducktails on ships —flat extensions that project from the stern to lower resistance—reduces fuel usage. Painting new or existing ship hulls with low-friction coatings to keep them clean of algae and barnacles boosts efficiency by 9 percent. Lowering operating speed—what the shipping industry calls “slow steaming”—reduces fuel consumption more than any other practice. Compressed air distributed as a layer of bubbles around the hull makes freighters more hydrodynamic and energy efficient. The International Maritime Organization has established the Energy Efficiency Design Index for new ships — comparable to the fuel-economy standards for cars. As a result, all new vessels must meet a minimum efficiency standard, which becomes more rigorous over time. Another approach to curtailing global carbon, developed jointly by RightShip and the Carbon War Room, is the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Rating system for commercial vessels. This rating system enables cargo-ship charterers to reduce cost and green supply chains by selecting ships with the best ratings. Already 20 percent of global trade uses this rating system, as do banks, insurers, and port authorities. In the last decade, the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have become environmental models for the world: plugging ships into electrical by Dennis Allen shore power to stop them idling on diesel when in port; reducing dockage fees in exchange for reduced speed within a 40-mile radius; and giving rewards to the newest, cleanest ships that come to port. Another strategy is the SkySail, a three-component auxiliary propulsion system consisting of kite and tow cable, launch and recovery mechanism, and a control system for automated operation. The large inflatable kites operate at heights between 300 and 1,000 feet where stronger winds prevail. Depending on the size of the kite, fuel consumption can be reduced by 15-30 percent. The minimal implementation of this system to date is due to a structural problem in the industry—ship owners, who would likely make the investment, don’t usually pay for fuel. The charterers, who pay for the fuel, don’t charter ships long enough to make implementing low-carbon technologies profitable. When all these improvements in design, technology, and operations are collectively applied on an industry-wide scale, carbon emissions can be cut by more than 50 percent. More and stronger incentives are needed to make these measures mainstream.
