Mesa Home’s adobe Walls Hold the Magic Inside

S

omething about the courtyard at 234 Mesa Lane invites deep thoughts, warm wishes, and second glances. It could be the poem that’s stamped into the walkway as you approach the house, or the gently gurgling fountain that provides background music, or possibly the shimmering sunlight that dances through the dappled leaves of the plentiful foliage all around. Whichever component most strikes your fancy, the end result is a joyous, peaceful ambience that’s sure to put a smile on visitors’ faces. The house at 234 Mesa Lane is surrounded by an adobe wall, dotted with frilly, friendly plants and bushes. A huge palm tree rises above it like a firework exploding in the sky. Once you are inside the wall, the delightful sensory experience begins. The aforementioned fountain flows serenely in the center of an enclosed courtyard. To the left is an outdoor living room. Pieces of art abound but blend into the background unless you are looking for them. Tropical plantings provide a lush, exotic backdrop. Although they look like they’ve been transported from a rain forest, the plants throughout this property are native and drought-tolerant. In fact, the beautiful gardens were designed by the home’s former owner, Owen Dell, a renowned landscape artist; a permeable driveway and rooftop vegetable garden were his state-of-the-art touches. His home was his drawing board for many features that went on to be lauded and emulated worldwide. But the appeal of 234 Mesa Lane is inside as well as out. The main house is a dreamy three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with charming details throughout. I entered through the living room, where gleaming hardwood floors and rough-hewn window frames echoed the garden. Down a hallway to the left are two bedrooms and a bath in the front of the house, a nice-sized laundry room with extra storage in the middle, and the master bedroom and bath tucked privately toward the back. Unexpected pops of color continue the feast for the eyes, and period hardware plus thoughtful touches in every room kept my head turning as I walked from one room to the next. The master suite was one of my favorite spots. You enter the master bathroom from the hallway by walking through the walk-in closet and into the bath, which is dominated by gorgeous original tilework in the bathtub, in green and orange hues. The tile vies for attention with the window, which frames the private garden outside, and a handcrafted, free-form wood counter and cabinet. The master bedroom carries on this romantic, natural

Plus, it has huge French doors opening out to another private, outdoor brick-lined patio, once again extending the living space outside. In the main area, the kitchen and dining room are open to the living room. There’s enough separation to define the spaces, yet the rooms flow easily from one to the other. Off the cozy dining space is yet another set of big French doors out onto the backyard. The yard is where this home’s magic really shines. Pathways lead seamlessly from one outdoor “room” to another, showcasing the gardens that Dell planned. He was a visionary in creating organic gardens that are both pleasing and practical. When I commented on the variety of trees and plants in this backyard, and how well they have been nurtured, I was told that there are almost 140 different types of edible and medicinal plants on the property. A separate guest cottage sits just steps from the main house. It has two separate rooms, both with floor-toceiling bookshelves, cathedral ceilings, and lots of natural light. I imagine either a teenager’s dream bedroom, with plenty of privacy, or a cozy place for grandma to stay: in the house, but not actually in the house. When I thought I had seen it all, I was directed to yet another secret room off the garage. This hideaway also has high ceilings and beautiful light and would make a perfect music or hobby room. I walked back to the main house along the meandering pathway and let my mind wander as well. Butterflies flitted in the sunlight, and every care in the world seemed shut out of this peaceful garden oasis. As I walked away, I realized that the adobe wall surrounding 234 Mesa Lane feels much more like it was put there to hold the magic inside than to keep intruders out. I left with a smile on my face and a little more bounce in my step. A bit of 234 Mesa Lane’s magic had rubbed off on me.

n Sunday, August 13, a sold-out crowd enjoyed the opening matches of the Gulfstream Pacific Coast Open (PCO) at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in Carpinteria. According to U.S. Polo Association (USPA) Chair Joe Meyer,“This competition continues to serve as the most highly anticipated highgoal tournament on the Pacific Coast.” Hosted by the USPA and the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club (SBPRC), the tournament once again features six top teams: defending champion Restoration Hardware, Farmers & Merchants Bank, Klentner Ranch, Lucchese, Santa Clara, and Sol de Agosto. The tournament dates back to 1909 and has been held at the SBPRC since 1952. The final match of the day, which drew the biggest crowd, pitted Klentner Ranch, with Jesse Bray, Facundo Obregon, Geronimo Obregon, and Justin Klentner, against defending champion Restoration Hardware, with Ben Soleimani; his coach, Santi von Wernich; Jason Crowder; and Matt Coppola. At halftime, Klentner had an 8-2 lead, and it kept a comfortable margin throughout the second half, going on to win 14-7. As often is the case with polo in Santa Barbara, the party began before the match, with sponsors and members mingling in the clubhouse while others had their own festivities in their boxes or in the cabanas adjacent to the grandstands. Still others chose the new picnicking option, pulling their vehicles up to the far side of the field with their own chairs, comestibles, and libations.

At halftime, the party moved to the field, where fans enjoyed partaking in the traditional stomping of the divots while mingling on the wide grassy expanse. After the match, the popular Polo After Hours party began, with DJ Fab cranking the tunes and guests dancing away. The PCO continued with more matches on August 17, 18, and 20. The semifinals take place Thursday, August 24, and the finals, Sunday, August 27, which is also Ladies Hat Day, with fabulous prizes being awarded by raffle to those wearing chapeaus. While the PCO marks the end of the high-goal season, exciting play continues with the USPA National Youth Tournament Series Championship on September 3, the Ramsey Asphalt USPA Presidents Cup on September 10 and 17, the USPA Wickenden Cup on September 24 and October 1, and the Last Chance Tournament on October 8. Get tickets early as the last 11 matches have sold out. The Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club offers three high-goal fields, a polo school, boarding facilities, and polo lessons, along with eight tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a fitness facility. New this season is Happy Hour at the Polo Club, which was taking place every Friday and moved to Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. during the Pacific Coast Open. It features small bites and a full bar. This Thursday will be the final happy hour of the season.

uilders use great quantities of sand and even more of aggregate, a category that lumps together sand, gravel, and crushed stone. Aggregate is the main component of concrete (80 percent) and of asphalt (94 percent). Sand is melted to make window and plate glass; it is essential in the construction of solar panels; and it is used for filtration in water treatment, septic systems, and swimming pools. Foundries shape sand into molds for a multitude of iron and brass hardware objects. And of course, sandblasting uses large quantities of sand. The American Geological Institute issued a report in 2004 saying that the typical American house utilizes more than a hundred tons of sand, gravel, and crushed stone. We think of this ubiquitous material as inexhaustible, but the mining of sand and gravel greatly exceeds renewal rates. Sand is a renewable material, but it renews at a glacial rate. Sand is formed mostly through the gradual disintegration of bigger rocks through the action of ice, water, wind, and time. As geologist Michael Welland writes in his book Sand: The Never-Ending Story, many bigger rocks were formed by the accumulation of eroded bits of other rocks. In brief, this slow, cyclical process breaks large rocks into sand and gravel, which in turn often rebind together in larger chunks. Welland says that by Dennis Allen probably as much as “half of all sand grains have been through six cycles in the mill, liberated, buried, exposed and liberated again.” Not all sands are equal. The blends for beach volleyball are not firm enough for equestrian tracks. Beach sands are not suitable for concrete mixes unless they have been rinsed sufficiently to remove all the salt and other undesirable materials. Desert sand is unacceptable for golf course sand traps and just about any other human use. Different requirements for different uses have led to more and more shipping of sand all over the world. Despite this global sourcing, for many uses the right kind of sand is scarce or unavailable. Aggregate is one of the most abundant natural resources but also the second most heavily exploited resource, after water. Unfortunately, the rate of usage is increasing; extraction and consumption continue to climb as China and India seek rapid economic growth. Much of the mining and dredging of sand from the ocean floor has negative environmental impacts. This is true with our exploitation of so many other natural resources, even renewable ones, but we have been slower to come to this awareness with sand and aggregate than with many other resources.
