949 Toro Canyon Road

‘living with Water’ in toro Canyon

I

found myself sipping espresso with Barton Myers and his wife, Vicki Myers, last week on their sunny veranda high above Montecito, listening to the rustle of the wind, and admiring the view. Every care in the world seemed to be miles away as the infinity pool in front of us melded into the ocean view in the distance. Barton Myers, a world-renowned architect, and both the designer and the owner of this home, brought me back to reality with the observation, “You’ve got to remember that this is a dangerous place to live. If you’re going to build here, you’ve got to be smart.” Myers’s steel-and-concrete home in Toro Canyon is one of the properties on the upcoming ArchitecTours. The area branch of the American Institute of Architects is hosting the ninth annual event, which offers tours of six properties that showcase the theme “Living with Water.” From a Greekinspired home on the bluffs above Isla Vista to the MOXI museum downtown, the six sites offer inspiration and education and are open to the public. Myers’s home is a feast for the senses, and water is a central component. I was invited in for a sneak peek of what tour-goers will see on the October 7 event. The idyllic setting in Toro Canyon coexists with the very real hazard of living in a wildfire zone, in a canyon that hasn’t burned in more than 50 years. When Myers bought these 40 acres 20 years ago, he designed this home to be resistant to both fire and erosion and to take full advantage of the naturally beautiful canyon surroundings. Myers’s long list of architectural honors and awards recognizes his renown for using steel components and connecting houses with nature. His home at 949 Toro Canyon Road shows his commitment to both of those ideals, which makes it a highlight of the upcoming ArchitecTours event. The house is absolutely stunning. It is made up of four steel buildings on three terraced levels. Bright-red

backup reservoir for fire protection, insulation for the buildings, and a lovely sight and sound. The main residence is 2,800 square feet of steel and concrete with soaring ceilings and open walls covered by huge roll-up shutters. Myers demonstrated how easily these shutters manually open and close, completely “cocooning the house” and providing insulation and fire control, as well as a distinctive look. The entire front half of the house is an expansive great room, with kitchen and living areas divided by a half wall. Myers walked through the room, pointing out architectural elements left and right that serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. He showed off the flow 949 Toro Canyon Road of the kitchen, pointing out how he and his wife each take charge of one side of the room and “meet in the middle” and calling this kitchen design the secret to a happy marriage. Beyond a wall lie the bedrooms and baths, providing much more living space than originally meets the eye, including a spacious master suite with a soaking tub right in the bedroom. The garden views are showcased through the glass walls, and clerestory windows throughout take advantage of the ocean breezes. The top level of the property holds an office studio, which was abuzz with activity the afternoon that we were touring. But Myers focused our attention more on the variety of 949 Toro Canyon Road trees and plants on the property. Prized blood oranges, beautiful succulents, pomegranates, gates welcome visitors to the first level of the property, and more were lovingly pointed out along the hillside comprising the garage, a car park area, and a guesthouse. adjacent to the house. Sansum Diabetes center Holds taste of the Vine

A

bout 350 supporters of the William Sansum Diabetes Center turned out on Saturday, August 26, for the 15th annual Taste of the Vine fundraiser held on the idyllic Summerland bluff grounds of QAD Inc. The center netted about $125,000 from the event for its research, care, and education programs. Guests mingled on the expansive deck and grounds at QAD, enjoying the panoramic ocean views while sampling offerings from fine food and beverage purveyors. Cutler’s Artisan Spirits, Santa Barbara’s only distillery, was among the 37 food and beverage purveyors serving up tastes, with proprietor Ian Cutler personally serving his delectable spirits. In her role as mistress of ceremonies, Executive Director Ellen Goodstein exuded the passion she brings on a daily basis to this critically important organization. She introduced Charles Mattocks, executive director of Reversed, a reality show about diabetes that premiered this summer on the Discovery Life Channel. Mattocks shared his enthusiasm for raising funds for diabetes, a disease that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Board President Dr. Alex DePaoli shared some of the center’s exciting research projects, including developing an artificial pancreas. After 10 years of effort, the first device went on the market earlier this year. This hybrid artificial pancreas measures the blood sugar continuously and automatically adjusts basal insulin levels. Work continues on developing more advanced features. DePaoli also referenced the center’s work with diabetes and pregnancy, which has led to significant improvements in the health of both mothers and infants.

Lastly, he shared his excitement for the Mil Familias Project, which aims to reduce diabetes among the Latino population. For the next 10 years, 1,000 Latino families in Santa Barbara County will be followed to help determine why the incidence of diabetes is higher among this ethnic group. The project is run by a consortium led by the center that includes UC Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, Westmont College, and Lilly Diabetes. With $1.25 million in seed funding, the project just began last month. In a recent study of 400 Latino residents in the county, 7 percent of participants not knowing they had the disease tested positive and a whopping 45 percent were prediabetic, which means they have a one in three chance of developing diabetes in the next three to five years. Teen star Jackson Gillies, a type 1 diabetic himself, wowed the crowd with a couple of his songs, and in between, shared his gratitude to the William Sansum Diabetes Center for all that it does. The center (formerly known as the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute), is not part of Sansum Clinic but was founded by Dr. William Sansum in 1944. It is a leading research institution that also provides direct clinical care to patients, including free services to thousands of Santa Barbara County residents. It also offers free education programs to the 50,000 county residents impacted by the disease. For more pics and coverage of other events, go to independent.com/society. anta Barbara is home to hundreds of clubs, social groups, and nonprofit organizations. As one observer put it, “You can join groups from Audubon to Zonta.” Among this assortment of groups and gatherings, one of the most unique is the Channel City Club. The Channel City Club was the brainchild of Louis Lancaster. A native of Colorado, Lancaster grew up in Michigan. After college, he worked in advertising and banking. Lancaster was also very interested in politics, and he served one term in the Florida state legislature. In 1934, he moved to Santa Barbara and went to work for County National Bank and Trust. He later became a founder of Santa Barbara Bank & Trust. During World War II, Lancaster went to Washington, D.C., where he served as a State Department liaison officer, funneling information to organizations such as the Kiwanis, League of Women Voters, and the Rotary. During this time, he met Stuart Ward of the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco. This club became the inspiration for the Channel City Club. Lancaster was later part of the team that helped set up the founding conference of the United Nations. After the war and his return to Santa Barbara, Lancaster called together a number of influential citizens and told them of his idea to form a club, the purpose of which would be to invite distinguished figures to speak on various topics at membership luncheons. Surprisingly, only one member of that original group thought highly of the concept. Lancaster bided his time, again pitched his idea, and this time met with a favorable response. In early 1947, the Channel City Club was born. Simplicity was key. Guests spoke for 30 minutes, and 30 minutes were allowed for questions. Lecturers had to be from out of

town and were not paid. A member’s initiation fee was $5 and a 25¢ “tax” was charged on the $1.25 luncheons to cover club costs. Club membership soon numbered over 200. Meetings were held only when a speaker was available. The first was Leon Henderson, a prominent economist; the second was the U.S. Secretary of the Interior. The idea was to promote a relaxed and civil environment to better foster an exchange of ideas. The roster of speakers has been impressive: Richard Nixon, Hubert Humphrey, Jerry Brown, Billy Graham, Ann Landers, Nelson Rockefeller, writer Aldous Huxley, conductor Leopold Stokowski, Cecil B. DeMille, George Wallace, columnist Walter Lippmann, and Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Mt. Everest — the list goes on and on. Sometimes there were glitches; Humphrey was two hours late and was furious to find the meeting had ended by the time he arrived. DeMille proved to be a bit of a prima donna; his lectern had to be exactly 46 inches in height, the light had to be 100 watts, and so on. Yet his talk was highly successful. The club was for men only, and eventually Louis’s wife, Winifred, took matters into her own hands. After a false start in the 1950s, she founded the Channel City Women’s Forum in 1966. This group often preferred topics on culture and the arts. Authors were popular, although Jimmy Carter, then Georgia governor, spoke and announced he would run for president, which at that time was met with some skepticism. The two groups merged in 1988 and still welcome to Santa Barbara speakers of national and international renown. In their lifetimes, the Lancasters garnered any number of civic awards and honors, but this unique Santa Barbara institution is undoubtedly their outstanding legacy.

Mortimer Cook House 1407 Chapala Street

Architect: 1872, Peter J. Barber

T

he Cook house, one of Santa Barbara’s finest remaining examples of the Italianate style, has a history that reflects, in microcosm, the flamboyant Victorian era. As with many of the larger Italianate houses that Peter J. Barber designed, the Cook house boasts a splendid central cupola. Mortimer Cook, a native of Ohio, lived in Santa Barbara for only about a decade, but in that short time he managed to build and lose a fortune. Shortly after he arrived in 1871 by boat from San Francisco and floated his considerable wealth ashore in a massive safe, he opened a private bank. A year later, he established the First National Gold Bank in partnership with Amasa Lincoln, owner of the Lincoln House (still standing as the Upham Hotel at 1404 De la Vina Street; see entry #237). In 1874, banker Cook entered politics and was elected city mayor. That same year, the First National Gold Bank purchased land on the northwest corner of State and Canon Perdido streets and began construction of a three-story Italianate brick bank-and-office building, completed in 1876. By that time, Cook was more interested in real estate development than in banking, and in 1876 he undertook the construction of the town’s largest building at the corner of State and Carrillo Streets (the Upper Clock Building). Cook, however, was about to meet his nemesis. Financially overextended, he suffered heavy losses in the 1877 panic. Shortly thereafter, he sold his remaining assets and moved to Washington state, intent on building another fortune. The house has had a number of subsequent owners, none of whom impacted the city like the original, and Cook’s story seems destined to remain as impressive n as the house, a city landmark.
