Montecito’s Best-kept secret
M
y dog Scout and I take
lots of walks. She is often the instigator, pulling me from whatever I’m doing with a plaintive “Let’s go out and stretch our legs and sniff around the neighborhood” look. But other times, I’ll admit that I use her perceived needs as an excuse to traipse along the beach, or check out a new trail. We have our favorite routes. You’ll often find us at the harbor or cruising State Street. One of our preferred loops is from the bird refuge, up around the edge of Santa Barbara Cemetery, and then down the bike path to Butterfly Beach and back. There’s something about that stretch that’s both familiar and exotic: traversing from Santa Barbara into Montecito and back again. While Scout investigates every bush, I admire the mansions along the way to the Biltmore and imagine what life must be like behind the walls that surround them.
If we’re short on time, I’ll just park near the bike path, and Scout and I will limit our walk to a mini loop. It was on one such quick trip last week that I noticed an open house near our route, just around the corner from where the bike path starts on Channel Drive. This one-bedroom condominium at 1050 Fairway Road is part of El Montecito Verde, a 30-unit building perched quietly next to the Music Academy of the West, the Biltmore, and some of Montecito’s most valuable beachfront estates. They say that real estate is all about “location, location, location,” and this address is certainly in a coveted locale. This home is on the third floor, accessed through a quiet indoor hallway and up a private elevator. Walking through the front door of number 1050, the bedroom is to the
right, with the bathroom next door. Both rooms are spacious and bright, with plenty of closets and storage. White counters and cabinetry in the bathroom, plus a white tiled bathtub, add to the airy, pristine feeling. To the left of the front entry lies the kitchen, with patterned tile, built-in shelving over the sink, and farmhouse-style fixtures. Through the kitchen is a separate dining nook, and beyond lies the living room. One benefit of being on the top floor, besides no noise from above, is the high vaulted ceilings. The living room of this unit takes full advantage of the soaring space, and the angles focus all eyes on the beautiful view. A balcony at the far end of the living room looks toward Montecito Country Club, with greenery stretching on all sides and gorgeous mountain views beyond. While the first-floor units enjoy large patios, the view out this balcony is mesmerizing, offering changing colors and patterns throughout the day and year. El Montecito Verde also has underground parking, on-site laundry, and a private pool and spa.

On the day of my visit, the sun was shining, the pool was sparkling, and one resident had the inviting setting and spacious pool deck all to himself. We’ve sniffed and sauntered this neighborhood in every season. We can verify the views and guarantee the beaches. For those who need a bit more than a hike with a view, Coast Village Road and all that Montecito has to offer is right down the road. The condo at 1050 Fairway Road is not the gated mansion that many envision with a Montecito zip code, but it enjoys all of the nearby amenities, including a Scout-approved hiking trail or two.

Doctors Without Walls Holds Spectacular Balloon Glow event

octors Without Walls–Santa Barbara Street Medicine (DWW-SBSM) is an extraordinary organization providing health care to homeless and low-income individuals in Santa Barbara, and every year it throws one extraordinary fundraiser: Glow in the Park. The sold-out crowd of 425 supporters mingled in a scenic field at Elings Park, encircled by 10 brilliant, tethered hot-air balloons. Many jumped in for a spectacular ride before or after sunset. Eighty DWWSBSM volunteers were on hand, some staffing displays explaining the organization’s critical work. Omni Catering provided a scrumptious dinner of gourmet wild salmon and flatiron steak. During the program, Honorary Chair and major sponsor Michael Armand Hammer thanked the guests for their support. Board Chair Paul Jaconette related how DWW-SBSM serves “the most vulnerable people in the community, who are either ignored or set aside or just don’t have resources to take care of themselves and get the care and services they need.” He shared how DWW-SBSM is expanding to meet the growing demand for its services, including adding new boardmembers: Father Larry Gosselin, Ridley-Tree Cancer Center Medical Director Dr. Fred Kass, City Fire Chief Pat McElroy, and Dr. Kayla Rosen. John Palminteri led a short auction and ask and then led the countdown to the most spectacular moment of the
evening: the simultaneous glow of all 10 balloons. Breathtaking! Tariqh Akoni and his One Night Only Band performed Stevie Wonder tunes, and guests danced and soared into the sky. In an interview, McElroy shared that he wanted to join the DWW-SBSM board because as a firefighter, he has been dealing with the homeless for years, has known people who have become homeless, and recognizes this is a super-underserved population. McElroy noted that DWW-SBSM’s work helps the community at-large because without the organization, the Boardmember Dr. Fred Kass (Ridley-Tree Cancer Center medical director), Vice President Father homeless would otherwise be Jon-Stephen Hedges, volunteer Dr. Samantha Mathews, and volunteer Dr. Chris Thrash using fire and other emergency services. Dr. Kass shared how he joined the board of DWW-SBSM because “the staff are my heroes. They are dedicated healers in the most noble sense of the word.” DWW-SBSM sets up mobile medical clinics in Pershing Park and Alameda Park each week, staffed by volunteer physicians, nurses, premed students, and others. At Transition House three Fridays per month, DWW-SBSM operates the Women’s Free Homeless Clinic, which offers medical care, mentalhealth counseling, acupuncture, KEYT’s John Palminteri (MC/auctioneer) with Sansum Clinic CEO showers, a hot lunch, laundry serand CMO Kurt Ransohoff vices, donated clothing and hygiene items, and referrals to other services. the Howard school One of the South Coast’s Oldest private Schools
t
he Howard School, which opened in September 1912, is one of the oldest private schools on the South Coast. It was the brainchild of Hannah Howard, who began the school to supplement her family’s income. The first campus was located on South Jameson Lane in Montecito. The main building had originally been a restaurant, the Grove House, which was operated by the Alfred Jacoutot Jr. family in the 1890s. After the Jacoutot family had moved on, the Grove House developed a shady reputation under the name Channel City Suburban Club, a restaurant and tavern that apparently also dabbled in prostitution. The sheriff shut down this operation in 1908. John and Hannah Howard arrived in Montecito shortly after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Natives of Canada, Hannah had taught school in Winnipeg, and John had earned a pharmacy degree at McGill University in Montreal. The couple moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where John hoped to open a drug store. The 1906 quake trapped him in a building for two days, and his health remained delicate from that day forward. After their arrival here, the family operated a small farm, and in 1911 they opened the Tea Kettle Inn. Hannah also began tutoring, which was so successful she decided to open a school. Enrollment in The Howard School that first fall stood at six students. By 1914, attendance stood at 75. Hannah closed the inn to concentrate on the school, and her daughters, Isabel and Esther, soon returned from college to take up teaching duties. For years, The Howard School was the only private school in the Montecito area. By 1922, enrollment growth and increased traffic on the Coast High-
way necessitated a relocation, and the school moved to 260 San Ysidro Road. During the 1920s, the school operated kindergarten through 8th grade, with a maximum of 10 pupils per class. The curriculum was difficult, with emphasis on literature, drama, and art. Instruction in French began in the 1st grade. Outside instructors were brought in on a weekly basis to teach courses in science, physical education, and other disciplines. A few students boarded at the school, and most students were girls, although boys did attend kindergarten through 2nd grade. Hannah Howard retired in 1942. Esther and Isabel continued on until 1951, when they sold the school to Warwick and Eileen Carpenter, both of whom had taught in local schools for a number of years. The Carpenters accepted boys in all grades and boosted the number of boarders. Average enrollment climbed to around 100. The curriculum remained challenging; 2nd graders often wrote 10-page papers. The Carpenters enforced a strict dress code; attire for the boarders’ Sunday dinner was coat and tie for boys and fine dresses for girls. The Carpenters sold the school in 1978, and in 1982, Richard and Judith Harber bought it and installed the Mae Carden curriculum, which stressed fundamentals of grammar and math in the early grades, the development of analytical thought in later years, and the interrelationships of class subjects. The Harbers also added a preschool program. In 1999, Laguna Blanca School in Hope Ranch purchased a 10-year lease on The Howard School and announced its plan to end the Carden approach. The Howard School found a new home on Foothill Road in Carpinteria, where it continues to offer the only Carden curriculum in the county.
