MAKE MYSELF AT HOME
Surprising Hope Ranch Annex Home
I
attended one of my favorite annual fundraisers on Sunday: the Foodbank’s Empty Bowls event at the Ben Page Youth Center. A simple meal of soup and bread dished up by apron-clad volunteers and served in donated handmade ceramic bowls. After each seating, cookies are served and tours are given of the Foodbank’s on-site warehouse. The location is in the noman’s land between Goleta and Santa Barbara, near where Hollister meets State Street and Modoc splits off toward Hope Ranch. Usually referred to as Hope Ranch Annex, this region is convenient to everything and even has its own school district. As I was leaving the Empty Bowls event, I stumbled onto an unexpected open house. Located at 4471/4473 Hollister is a mini-estate full of surprises. Although its address is busy Hollister Avenue, once you step inside the house and close the door behind you, you’re in your own peaceful, secluded oasis. I stepped into the foyer and found myself in a living room with a striking fireplace flanked by French doors offering a view into a parklike backyard. This central room feels cozy despite its vaulted ceilings and provides an anchor to the two separate wings of the home on either side, as well as a peek of the staircase leading downstairs. Through an arched doorway to the left is a huge gourmet kitchen with a large island, glass-fronted built-ins, and white cabinetry providing a contrast to the natural wood cathedral ceiling. An eat-in dining area and seating at the counter ensure that this room will always be the busy heart of this home. The master bedroom suite is tucked behind the kitchen and offers both a private patio off the side and access to the backyard. The master bath has the best of both worlds, with a deep, freestanding bathtub and a glass shower enclosure. Two more bedrooms and a bath sit in a separate wing on the other side of the house. A loft sleeping area accessible only by a ladder is sure to make one of these bedrooms a hit with toddlers through teens. The other bedroom has a separate entrance, offering private access for various split living situations.
Having been told that the home has a basement, I was eager to explore downstairs, expecting storage or maybe a laundry room. I descended the central staircase to find an elegant three-room suite, currently set up as a family room, plus a bedroom and bath. The basement rooms could also be configured into a teenager’s fantasy downstairs hideaway, a home gym, an art studio, or just about anything else. With this many options in the main house, I was again surprised when I walked outside to discover not only a full guesthouse but also a separate studio set up as an office with laundry room. The backyard also includes a lovely green lawn, a lower level with a rabbit hutch or chicken coop, and a brick patio area with a fireplace and a soothing, decorative fountain. The guesthouse charmed me immediately, with Dutch doors both front and back offering views of the yard and bringing the sights and sounds of the outside in. The two-room house is split into a separate bedroom and a living room that contains a compact kitchen. The guesthouse has its own address (4473 Hollister Ave.) and very private access down the side of the main house. I’m sure I’m not the only person to visit this mini-estate and think that the guesthouse would be plenty of living space for me. As I finished my unexpected visit to this lovely listing, I noticed guests still arriving at the Foodbank fundraiser down the street. I was glad that I got an early start to that event, and fortunate to have added a detour to discover this lovely mini-estate at an unexpected address in the same neighborhood.

ituated down a hidden lane near the Mission and Downtown, this impeccably restored 1931 Spanish pied-à-terre is reminiscent of the Cinque Terre. The utmost attention to detail is evident in the remodeled 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom interior and the exquisitely landscaped and terraced exterior. Hardwood floors, abundant natural light and historic character are some of the wonderful qualities you can find throughout the home.
silk blend roman shades and earth-toned, natural fiber wallpaper. A walk-in closet and a spa-like bathroom with a double vanity and warm stone surfaces will not disappoint. The two additional bedrooms are equally cozy and luxurious with custom window coverings, walk-in closets and a generous shared bathroom. The half bathroom is tucked away next to the office alcove and 2nd bedroom that sits around an exterior back courtyard.
Upon entering through the front door, a barrel ceiling, inlayed hardwood floors and large picture window are grounded by the warmth of the original wood-burning fireplace in the elegant living room. The intimate and formal dining room with its alcoved built-ins leads to the kitchen, where top-of-the-line appliances, beautiful surfaces and a banquet with wraparound windows, look out over the treetops.
Entertain in style or relax in solitude behind the tall hedges on one of your three coral-stone patios. Original and refurbished sandstone terracing coupled with the drought-tolerant, colorful and beautifully designed landscaping creates the back-drop for Santa Barbara’s easy outdoor living.
The master bedroom, while luxurious, is appointed with understated details, like the custom linen/

Biomimicry:
Designing Using Nature as Model
ABCs of Healthy
Citrus Trees
E
ver wonder why so many citrus trees around town look yellow, tired, and sad? Sure, part of this is due to the drought, but mostly it’s because they are not cared for properly. Oftentimes the trees are grown in a garden or lawn where they endure shallow and frequent irrigation. Other times they are forgotten and only occasionally watered. Although citrus trees are vulnerable to some diseases and insect pests, they are less prone to them if their basic cultural needs are met. I don’t mean take them to the opera or a museum—I’m talking about giving them the food and water they need and BY RANDY ARNOWITZ watching out for bugs.
GARDENING
FERTILIZER: In order to promote a heavy bloom, I begin feeding an organic fertilizer like Island Seed & Feed’s landscape mix around late winter. I try to take advantage of our rains and give them their first meal at that time to ensure that the food gets washed down to the roots. Feeding should continue until late summer. How much and how often depends on the type of food, how often you water, and what method of irrigation you use. MULCH: To keep the soil moist and cool, I maintain a thick blanket of mulch or compost under my citrus trees. It’s important to keep their trunks dry, though, by regularly pulling away the mulch and soil that banks up against them. PESTS: Even under the best circumstances citrus trees may get some insect pests. Aphids, mealy bugs, and scale can be treated with horticultural or neem oil. For the extremely persistent citrus leaf miner, the pest-control advisor at Agri-Turf Supplies, Robert Muraoka, recommends spraying a product containing spinosad every six weeks. Mixing spinosad with oil will keep all pests in check. Muraoka warns that an oil product must not be used when temperatures will approach or exceed 85 degrees. Oh, and one more thing: Before applying oil, be sure your trees are thoroughly watered or leaf drop, or worse, can occur.
T
he quest for more effective and efficient ways to clean man-made surfaces and fabrics is long standing. Time, money, and environmental cost are always involved. In contrast, many plants seem able to stay clean with nothing more than the occasional rinse by dew or rainwater. Lotus leaves exemplify this ability. Although they appear smooth, under a microscope they reveal an outer skin of bumpy cells covered by a thin layer of water-repellent wax crystals. These two properties make the leaf self-cleaning. Water falling on the waxy, bumpy surface forms spherical beads that readily roll off; any dirt on the surface clings to the water droplets and is easily carried away with the runoff. This hydrophobic quality (shedding water) is not unique to the lotus. For example, it enables winged insects like butterflies and dragonflies that are unable to clean their wings with their legs (as many other insects do) to, nevertheless, have clean wings. Janine Benyus, the scientist who authored the seminal book Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature, suggested designing products and systems by taking advantage of evolution’s 3.8 billion years of R&D. Drawing lessons from nature helps us understand how to live in harmony with nature, rather than how to dominate it, according to Benyus. Nature’s principles in the self-cleaning lotus leaf are now being utilized in man-made products without depleting or harming the natural world. Examples include self-cleaning roof tiles, self-cleaning paints, soil-repellent fabrics, and treatments for glass. The benefits in all these products are decreased use of water, detergents, and solvents. Another potentially important area of growth is coatings for solar panels. Researchers at Boston University have estimated that 4 grams of dust per square meter of glass on a solar panel reduces power conversion by 40 percent. Dust deposition in Arizona is about 17 grams per square meter per month, thus cutting a panel’s effectiveness in almost half in by Dennis Allen just one week of exposure. Other applications of the biomimicry approach that go beyond hydrophobic surfaces are as follows:
GOING GREEN
• The GreenShield fabric finish — a textile coating that adds oil resistance, fire retardation, and anti-microbial functionalities, all while reducing the negative impacts of chemicals and nanoparticles on the environment. • New window glass developed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council that is self-cleaning, anti-glare, and energy conserving. • Bird protective glass that reduces bird collisions by applying a special ultraviolet (UV) reflective coating that appears transparent to humans but is clearly visible to birds, who see a broader UV spectrum than humans.
WATER: The best way to determine when to water your citrus is to use a soil probe. Once you do this a few times, you will get an idea of how often and for how long to water. Citrus, like most trees, need an occasional, deep soaking. That means water them before their roots dry out but not while soil is still wet or soggy.
The world of biomimicry has expanded well beyond man-made surfaces and fabrics with equally impressive advances based on imitating nature without harming it.
Let’s review. Do not water three times a week for five minutes. Do water when soil approaches dryness. Do not water if it’s soppin’— soppin’ if you do, fruit will be droppin’. Do n not let them get too dry— dry if you do, they’ll surely die.
