Casual Elegance on Cedar Lane
T
he recent shorter days and earlier sunsets have meant fewer beach walks for me the past couple of weeks. I still try to get my steps in, however, so I took a quick walk up the stairs at the courthouse yesterday. My reward at the top of the tower was a stereotypical Santa Barbara vista: bright blue sky above the mountains sloping down to meet the crisscrossing streets of downtown. The houses dotting the hills seemed to be winking down at the city below, happy in their hillside perches. I visited one of those houses this week and experienced that hillside happiness firsthand. The home at 11 Cedar Lane is warm and inviting. In many ways it feels brand-new, and yet it has a solid, oldworld, comfortable air. Built in 1950, it’s been completely updated, including many touches that were completed just this year. As I walked up the driveway, I noticed how level the lovely yard is, even though the house is up on the hill. Cedar Lane is off of La Vista Grande, with beautiful views, just like the name implies. This neighborhood enjoys a sweet microclimate, warm and sunny up above the fog but not as hot as it gets farther up. It’s in a zone just above the Eastside, along the Riviera, and a quick hop from Montecito.
The front door opens directly onto the main room of the house a large, cozy living room anchored on one side by a solid-white brick fireplace and on the other by a picture window. The gleaming, wide-plank hardwood floors rival the pine-beamed ceilings for naturally beautiful details. This room has almost a resort feeling to it, with the combination of impressive scale yet natural materials and ambience. From the living room, the front wing of the house holds two bedrooms with a shared hallway bathroom. The slope of the roof makes for lovely angled-beam ceilings in both bedrooms, and bay windows add even more architectural interest. The real surprises lie on the other side of the house. Back in the living room, an arched doorway leads through a hallway to the master suite. The master bedroom has French doors opening onto a raised

Separating the bedroom and bathroom is a walk-in closet with elegantly efficient built-ins. I walked out onto the deck to admire the rest of the backyard, which includes fruit trees and a raised garden bed next to yet another door, which led me back inside and into the kitchen. One side of the kitchen is open to the living room, yet it also feels separate and fully contained. Following a theme throughout the house, every detail of the kitchen is impeccable, yet its overall effect is understated. It boasts top-of-the-line stainless-steel appliances, including a Sub-Zero glass-fronted refrigerator and a Dacor range. It’s a space I’d love to spend some time in. The whole house feels casually elegant, or elegantly casual. As I enjoyed the view on my way back down the hill, I was filled with a Zen-like sense of happiness from 11 Cedar Lane and its surroundings. No wonder the houses on the hillside are winking.

Military Ball Is a Grand Celebration
O
n November 4, about 650 guests gathered at Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Resort for Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation’s (PCVF) grand Military Ball. Setting the tone for this jubilant celebration, the hotel entrance was festively adorned with a multitude of American flags and banners, and a Bell UH-1 Huey helicopter was parked alongside. Veterans mingled with active-duty members and supporters. About 300 Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) members, student veterans, and enlisted personnel attended as guests of the foundation. In the Grand Ballroom, guests were greeted by PCVF founder and Boardmember Lt. John Blankenship (USN, former), who shared Pierre Claeyssens’s wish that veterans always be remembered. Master of ceremonies Master Sergeant Jon Parra (U.S. Army, ret.) introduced the Vandenberg Air Force Base Color Guard, which brilliantly presented the colors. Senior Cadet Dominique Chan (UCSB ROTC Surfrider Battalion) eloquently performed the Missing Man Ceremony. Guests enjoyed a gourmet three-course meal featuring filet mignon and shrimp. The keynote speaker was Col. Jack Jacobs, an NBC and MSNBC military analyst, Medal of Honor recipient, and holder of three Bronze Stars, two Silver Stars, and two Purple Hearts. He passionately shared his belief that everyone owes this country service and that there is nothing like military service to give young people authority and responsibility at an early age. Jacobs spoke of the need for both employers and military members themselves to recognize that people who serve in uniform can do absolutely anything. There was a moving Salute to Services, with members of each of the six branches rising for the playing of his or her branch’s song. Blankenship presented the Generations of Service Award to the Di Loreto Family, whom he described as “the great American story.” Venanzio Di Loreto immigrated to the United States in 1912, and between him and his three sons, Silvio Dante Di Loreto (who passed away last year), Aldo Gene Di Loreto, and Lucio (John) Di Loreto, served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Art Deco Orchestra then started up the tunes and guests danced into the night. This always grand celebration was started by Pierre Claeyssens in 1996 to pay tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces. As a youth in Belgium during World War I,
Claeyssens experienced liberation by American soldiers and later immigrated to the United States, where he became an architect. Through marriage, he acquired enormous wealth and became a leading philanthropist. Near his death, he gave John Blankenship a $1 million check, which Blankenship used to establish the foundation. Blankenship works alongside his wife, Hazel; an executive board; and an advisory board to provide financial support to many programs serving veterans and active-duty personnel, including UCSB Veterans Resource Team, SBCC Veterans Support and Resource Center, UCSB ROTC, and Family Readiness Units at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Naval Base Ventura County, and the Sea Cadets. It also does advocacy work for the student veterans’ groups. The foundation holds many annual events honoring veterans, including the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Santa Barbara Cemetery, the Fourth of July Concert and Parade, the Veterans Day Ceremony at the cemetery (with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1649), and the Veterans Parade. In conjunction with the Channel City Club, PCVF holds Living History luncheons and symposiums where noted veterans share their stories. It has active partnerships with about a dozen other organizations for various programs and events, including VetNet Santa Barbara and Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Center. PCVF has an extensive collection of photographs, artwork, personal histories, and other memorabilia, which it has long sought to display in a museum. It has created 92 shadowboxes at the Veterans’ Memorial Building, each one dedicated to a veteran from the area. An exciting display opportunity for the aviation portion of the foundation’s collection is coming early next year. An investment group led by Warren Butler will convert the High Sierra Grill near the airport to the Flightline Restaurant and Bar, with aviation-related items displayed throughout the space, including large model airplanes suspended from the ceiling and a plethora of memorabilia. The San Ysidro Ranch T he San Ysidro Ranch, located high in the Montecito hills, is today one of the area’s most exclusive resorts. It boasts a history that may be traced back to the earliest days of Santa Barbara. The ranch was named after Saint Isidore, the patron saint of farmers. He was born into a poor family in 1070, and he and his wife became devout Christians after losing a child at birth. Isidore attended church daily, which often delayed his arrival in the fields. The story goes that he was never punished for his tardiness, for angels were often seen helping him with his chores. Isidore was also credited with a number of miracles and was canonized in 1622. The Plow & Angel pub on today’s ranch commemorates Saint Isidore. The ranch was originally part of Mission Santa Barbara lands, but after Mexico took over California in the early 1820s, the ranch passed into the hands of Tomas Olivera, whose father had served as a sergeant at Santa Barbara’s Royal Presidio. In 1825, he built an adobe home for himself and his new bride. The adobe still stands, is a state and a county landmark, and is one of the oldest buildings in Montecito. San Ysidro remained a working ranch throughout the 1800s. In the 1880s, it especially became known for its oranges and lemons. More than 1,000 orange trees graced the property, while the lemon groves produced more than 100,000 pieces of fruit annually. In late 1889, the two-story stone citrus packing house was built, which today houses the pub and The Stonehouse restaurant. In 1893, owners Taylor Goodrich and Harleigh Johnston welcomed the first paying guests (all eight
of them) with a tea under the moonlight. When the partnership dissolved in 1895, Johnston and his wife continued running the guest ranch, slowly adding cottages to the property as the years passed. The Johnston family sold the ranch to Ronald Colman and Alvin Weingand for $50,000 in 1935. Colman was a film star and Weingand was an experienced hotelier. Colman’s connections and Weingand’s managerial skills combined to produce the ranch’s most famous and elegant period. San Ysidro soon became a favorite hideaway for the members of California’s film colony. William Powell, Jean Harlow, Audrey Hepburn, Jack Benny, Fred Astaire, and Bing Crosby were just a few of the guests. John Huston sought out the tranquil peace of the ranch to finish the script for The African Queen. Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh married here in 1940; John and Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned here in 1953. Discretion was an iron rule at San Ysidro. Colman died in 1958, and Weingand carried on alone. A lifelong Democrat, he became deeply involved in California state politics and was a member of the State Legislature for six years. He found juggling the demands of a political career and managing the ranch too difficult, and he sold the ranch in 1965. Financial troubles and litigation followed until the ranch was sold to James Lavenson in 1976, who restored it to its former glory. Ty Warner, developer of Beanie Babies, bought the ranch in 2000. It continues to enjoy a glittering reputation for its natural beauty, impeccable accommodations, and wonderful cuisine. It is still a destination for many Hollywood movers and shakers who need to get away from it all.
