Mesa Home on Mohawk Road
T
here must be a special moniker for those who
live in Santa Barbara’s Mesa neighborhood. Mesa Maniacs? People who live on the Mesa love the Mesa. The allure might have something to do with their microclimate. Mesa dwellers sit nice and cool under their proprietary layer of fog when the rest of the city’s temperatures soar in the sunshine. The draw could also be due to their pristine beach proximity. Sets of stairs from nondescript Mesa streets lead down the cliffs to secluded coves. Mesa-ites are quick to point out that the Mesa has its own neighborhood-named Mesa Café, Mesa Burger, Mesa Barbers, and even a Mesa Bookstore. This self-contained burg is split into several micro-neighborhoods, including the flat, beachside portion closest to the Mesa Lane Steps, bordered by Cliff Drive on the north and west and Meigs Road on the east. It was in this zone that I visited a charming house at 330 Mohawk Road last week. While most of the rest of the city was filled with smoke and ash, the Mesa, especially near the beach, was a cool, clear respite. A white picket fence surrounds the front yard, with a palm tree in one corner, drought-tolerant landscape along the curb, and just enough grassy lawn for kids or pets to play. The house sits on a corner lot, so it almost has
two front yards, facing both Mohawk and Elise Way. As I walked in and started to look around, I realized that the streetfacing yards were only part of the home’s outdoor living space. The entire home is built around an interior courtyard patio. So in addition to the fenced yards outside, residents can enjoy a completely private, Saltillo-tiled outdoor room, perfect for dinners al fresco, birthday parties, or whatever fun from inside the house wants to spill outside. There’s even a hot tub to enjoy after a long day at the beach, or for relaxing stargazing. With five bedrooms and four baths, two stories, and approximately 3,000 square feet of space, there’s plenty of room inside as well. The house flows from one living area to the next, with thoughtful touches throughout. The front door opens into a foyer, just steps to the large living room that’s the center of the house. Cathedral ceilings and skylights enhance the airy, open feeling, while two fireplaces hint at cozy gatherings when the weather turns chilly. In addition to the living room and a separate dining room, there’s a family room that feels perfect for game nights, movies, or reading. The kitchen also feels like a prime gathering place, with counter seating, glass-fronted cabinets, and a showcase gas stove that’s old enough to be a coveted retro piece but new enough for gourmet tastes.
ADDRESS: 330 Mohawk Road STATUS: On the market PRICE: $1,859,000 There are three bedrooms and three baths downstairs, plus a separate master bedroom suite upstairs. Although it is nestled up above the hustle and bustle of the rest of the home, one of my favorite features in the entire house is the patio off the master bedroom. French doors open onto a deck that overlooks the outside courtyard. So while the master suite is isolated, it’s still connected to the goings-on downstairs. I imagine earlymorning coffee on the deck while waiting for the rest of the household to wake up and start the day. Every aspect of this house is ready-made for comfortable yet classy family living, but one of its most enviable features is its prime Mesa location. Four blocks to the beach in one direction, and only four blocks to shops and restaurants the other way, the future owners of this house may never need to leave the Mesa. And from what I hear, that’s just the way that the Mesa Maniacs like it.

Unity Shoppe Holds Annual Telethon
O
n December 9, Unity Shoppe held its 31st annual Telethon to support its year-round provision of goods and services to low-income members of the community. Its dedicated staff is in overdrive mode these days, providing a disaster relief store for those impacted by the Thomas Fire to obtain necessities and a holiday store for low-income parents to shop for presents for their children.

Santa Barbara City Firefighter Phil Faulding, Telethon host KEYT’s Beth Farnsworth, and Santa Barbara City Fire Engineer Jack Franklin
Board President Dave Gonzales and Executive Director Tom Reed
Administrative Director Elvira Avina with Boardmember and Santa Barbara Motorcycle Toy Run Cochair Jerry Herzberg
The Telethon, held at Unity’s Sola Street facility, was broadcast live on KEYT and featured video clips from Unity’s Peter Noone Concert this fall, which had the wildly popular British singer performing with Herman’s Hermits, as well as performances by Lois Mahalia and the San Marcos Madrigal Singers. The four-hour telethon included interviews with Kenny Loggins, Brad Paisley, Jelinda and Barry De Vorzon, Anne Smith Towbes, Tom Parker, and other notable supporters and a live performance by the Pacific Sound Chorus. Enthusiasm always runs high among schools, churches, businesses, and individuals who pitch in for this community event. While the support for Unity Shoppe runs deep and wide, so does the need for its services. Last year, Unity Shoppe served about 10,000 families and 3,500 seniors and distributed more than $2 million in food and merchandise. Year-round, Unity provides food, clothing, household items, and school supplies to individuals referred from 300 agencies. By providing a central distribution facility, Unity eliminates duplication of services. Parents and children shop in a pleasant environment, rather than receiving a handout of preselected items. This allows clients to get what they need while maintaining their dignity, and the system avoids waste. For the holidays, Unity provides a well-stocked, cheerful store for parents and children to select toys, games, and books. For each child, a parent may select two toys, a board
game, a stocking-stuffer item, an educational item, and a piece of winter clothing. Most toys are donated by Toys for Tots and other toy runs; the remainder are purchased at 10 percent of retail cost. All holiday items are new; the clothing and the household and school supplies provided the rest of the year are a mix of new and gently used items. Unity also has a Disaster Services Program that provides a multitude of needed items to disaster victims. For Thomas Fire victims, it has set up a designated disaster services store at its facility at 110 West Sola Street, where fire victims and evacuees can shop for food, clothing, and other basic necessities. No referral is needed for this service at this time. Unity’s core demographic is the working poor and seniors, though it provides assistance to people who are homeless and in transition, such as those at Transition House and those in the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission’s treatment program. Unity operates with a lean staff of 21, plus 1,700 youth volunteers on-site and hundreds of adult volunteers on- and off-site. With clients being referred from 300 organizations and the Thomas Fire impacting thousands, Unity is very much in need of donations. The last two hours of the Telethon will be rebroadcast on KEYT on December 25 and January 1, 2018, at 5 a.m., on KKFX on December 23 and December 25 at 2 p.m., and on KKFX on January 1 at 6 a.m.

RENOVATED 1915 GEORGIAN ESTATE
realestate.independent.com
11
Originally designed in 1915 by famous Santa Barbara architect, Russel Ray, this distinguished Georgian estate was recently substantially renovated to bring the home up to modern standards and conveniences. While properly preserving the home’s turn of the century character, the remodel features a new foundation, new plumbing and electrical, an expanded kitchen, a new roof and much more! Perched atop San Roque at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, the residence enjoys views of the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands, Steven’s Park and the city below. The nearly 1-acre of grounds are highlighted by a 2-stall barn and meticulously manicured landscaping.

The Santa Barbara Chapter of the American Institute of Architects
A
s many ideas do, this column came about through a chat over beers between the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Santa Barbara Independent. Our shared vision for this venture is to delve into and dissect the role of architects and architecture in Santa Barbara: past and present and future. Santa Barbara is one of the truly unique places in this country. This column presents an opportunity to expand the conversation about this unique place that we share. Perhaps more than any other city in the U.S., Santa Barbara has retained the legacy of architects’ work and words, as there are few U.S. cities that have been influenced by and retained the imprint of classical antiquity as has Santa Barbara. To guide and regularize Spanish settlements in the new world, King Philip II issued the Laws of the Indies in 1573—the first comprehensive guide to codify a city planning process and embody elements of a community general plan, which set forth every facet of creating a municipality, including this familiar clause: Colonists “shall try as far as possible to have the buildings all of one type for the sake of the beauty of the town.” These laws were heavily influenced by the Ten Books of Architecture, written by Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, commonly known as Vitruvius, a Roman author and architect of the first century bce, and also by Leon Battista Alberti, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo, all of the great European Renaissance period of 1400-1550. Frs. Serra and Lasuén, both learned Franciscans, most likely had brought the pattern books of Palladio, Serlio, Alberti, and others from classical antiquity, as they developed the string of missions in Alta California, resulting in the singularly classical façade of the Mission at Santa Barbara. It is perhaps fitting that the patron saint of architects, Santa Bárbara, has had some influence upon this part of California since 1602, when Sebastián Vizcaíno survived a violent storm just offshore on the eve of her feast day and gave the place her name in honor of his survival. She is also the shared patron of artillerymen, gunsmiths, tunnellers, miners, mariners and the Italian Navy, prisoners, mathematicians, and sudden death (as many design practitioners might attest). Places said to have a strong “sense of place” have a strong identity that is deeply felt by inhabitants and visitors, as we can attest. Places that lack a “sense of place” are sometimes referred to as “placeless” or “inauthentic,” as Gertrude Stein said about her hometown of Oakland: “There is no there there.” Vitruvius made a familiar and famous assertion that a building must exhibit three qualities: firmitas, utilitas, venustas — that is, it must be substantially constructed, beneficial to its users, and beautiful, a highly subjective evaluation in today’s world, but even he would agree that it reflects self-expression and even art. He wrote that the architect should be versed in drawing, geometry, optics (lighting), history, philosophy, music, theater, medicine, and law. Inside the confines of this column, we might add contemporary topics of environmental science, conservation, ecology, finance and real estate, architectural education, historic preservation, and topophilia—that is, a strong sense of place, which often becomes mixed with the sense of cultural identity among certain people and a love of certain aspects of such a place. Architects, urban planners, and designers do more than see the environment; we strive to feel it, to be and move within it, to grasp it with our minds, and to connect with it through memories, with other locations and eras, and encourage shapes and textures that might make some specific reference to and connect with places and times that mean something to the inhabitants and might help us to know where we are and, by extension, who we are.
Architecturally Speaking is written by members of the American Institute of Architects’ Santa Barbara chapter.
