MAKE MYSELF AT HOME

Hidden Valley Haven W

hen my boys were about 5 and 7 years old, we were struck with what was at that time a common malady: chicken pox. I’m told that they now have immunizations for chicken pox, but 20 years ago it was a childhood rite of passage. Chicken pox requires being quarantined from healthy children because it’s extremely contagious. With two sons two years apart, of course they came down with chicken pox one right after the other. So we had two weeks where they had to stay sequestered. You can imagine that keeping 5- and 7-year-old boys occupied in the house for two weeks was not an easy task. To make our chicken pox season bearable, we set out to find the least populated places to play outdoors in Santa Barbara. One of our discoveries was a little playground in the neighborhood called Hidden Valley. It may have changed over the years, but back then I joked that the Hidden Valley Park was one of the best-kept secrets in Santa Barbara. Last week I found an even better-kept secret in Hidden Valley. Casa La Cumbre is a neighborhood off Modoc Road, tucked between the entrance to Hope Ranch and Las Positas Road. It is a PUD, or planned unit development, in which homeowners own their houses along with the land on which they sit. The homes in Casa La Cumbre look much more like houses than condos, but similar to condos, they enjoy common areas and amenities that are maintained by a homeowners’ association. Number 4 La Cumbre Circle is a two-bedroom, two-bath home conveniently located at the very front of the complex, with easy access to visitor parking and in close proximity to the pool. One enters through a gated front porch that’s surrounded by a hedge. This small but private area looks like the perfect place to enjoy a book on a sunny day or to let a puppy or toddler scamper outside. A large living room is at the front of the house, with the bedrooms down a hallway to the right. The master bedroom is accessed through French doors and is designed with a clever half wall separating the large dressing area and master bath from the bed-

room. It also has large, sliding glass doors leading out onto the backyard. Walking back toward the kitchen, I noticed one of the reasons that this home appears so bright. Solar tubes have been installed throughout, bringing light into every room in the house. The kitchen is beautiful, with a dining nook, granite countertops, and a bay window over the sink, looking out onto the yard. There are new stainlesssteel appliances, including a brand-new Bosch washer and dryer hidden away in a closet. This checks off one of the must-haves on my personal list. I love having the laundry right inside the house. But when I stepped into the garage, I saw that it boasts such nicely designed built-in shelving and storage that I wouldn’t mind at all had I found the washer and dryer alongside. The backyard might be my very favorite part of this home. It’s beautifully landscaped, with bougainvillea and fruit trees and a fence tall enough to offer privacy yet still allow plenty of sunshine. There’s also a brand-new motorized, retractable awning to offer options all year-round. In addition to the pool, clubhouse, spa, and gym, there’s a private greenbelt perfect for dog walking. On my way out, I peeked at the pool and saw two little boys about 5 and 7 years old with their mom watching over them while they played. I realized that Casa La Cumbre might be the very most hidden spot in Santa Barbara.

4 La Cumbre Circle is currently for sale in Santa Barbara, listed by Karen Spechler of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. Contact Karen at 563-4074 or karenspechler@cox.net.

Kids Helping Kids Holds Gala Celebration

O

n January 12 and 13, Kids Helping Kids held its

10th Anniversary Gala Celebration featuring Andy Grammer on the 12th and Needtobreathe on the 13th at The Granada Theatre. The gala is produced by the student-run Kids Helping Kids (KHK), a nonprofit comprising San Marcos High School seniors enrolled in advanced-placement economics. It is the culmination of a series of fundraisers held each fall, which raise funds for disadvantaged students both in Santa Barbara and in developing countries. The organization, which this year has 130 student members, is the brainchild of San Marcos High School teacher Jamie DeVries, who founded KHK in 2002. For the past five years, DeVries has worked with fellow teacher Jillian Heckman in advising the students, but both stressed that it’s the students who run the gala and the organization. Guests were enthusiastically greeted on the red carpet in the Granada lobby by dozens of tuxedo- and blackdress-clad KHK members, who had formed a line on the perimeter and clapped and cheered upon the arrival of each guest. After this amusing celebrity experience, “VIPs” were escorted upstairs to the elegant Founders Room for a preshow reception, where Jazara Hutton, the winner of the 2016 San Marcos High School’s (SMHS) Royals Got Talent show, entertained with pop music while guests mingled, enjoyed wine and hors-d’oeuvres, and checked out silent-auction items. KHK amassed a whopping 3,000 items for the silent auction from area merchants, parents, and fellow students and set up a website for bidding prior to the event.

KHK members Natalie Hey-Shipton, Arin Pieramici, and Amanda Herbst

The show opened with SMHS’s 2017 talent show winner, Lily McWhirter, a senior at San Marcos and Vice President of the SMHS Madrigal Singers. She was followed by Dave Barnes and then the headline performer. Between acts on the first night, President and CEO Scott Reed of the Music Academy of the West (MAW) accepted the KHK Investment in People Award on behalf of MAW. Vice President of Marketing and Communications Ana Papakhian accepted the second night. The institution was recognized for the support and training that Reed, Papakhian, and Chief Advancement Officer Jonathan Bishop have provided over the years, as well as for the complimentary use of its facilities for another KHK fundraiser, the Winter Ball for students and parents. The galas also included a live auction and an ask, which helped it reach its very impressive annual fundraising goal of $500,000 gross and an estimated $300,000 net. Planning for the gala begins with the school year in August and includes marketing the event, organizing the VIP reception, coordinating the live and silent auctions, and producing the show. Smaller fundraising events leading up to the gala include the Royals Got Talent show, the Winter Ball, restaurant nights, and movie nights. KHK also raises funds through making pitches to businesses to become sponsors, an endeavor that provides the students with valuable training and experience. This year, Deckers Corporation, Pacifica Hotels, and the Mosher Foundation are among the large sponsors. About 60 percent of the funds raised go to the needs of youth in the Santa Barbara area, many of whom are students

at SMHS. KHK has provided funds to families who face financial hardship due to an illness; bought an electric wheelchair, visual aid machinery, and hearing equipment for students; donated to SMHS band and choir programs; and met myriad other needs. Globally, KHK currently funds the Bombay Teen Challenge, which rescues and assists victims of sex slavery in Mumbai and funds a safe house and school in Nicaragua. KHK students donate their time as well, tutoring and mentoring students in low-income housing developments on Santa Barbara’s Westside. According to KHK Chief Marketing Officer Allie Jones (an SMHS senior), “KHK offers an opportunity for students to take what they have learned in class and use it to make a difference. Concepts such as supply and demand that sound like boring econ mumbo jumbo to regular AP economics students can be taken and used to save a life.” KHK student Victoria Ortiz shared that “KHK has taught me how to talk to professional businesses, how to solve problems with team members, and how to … enact change in the world around me.” DeVries wants KHK to serve as a model for other schools. In 2012, State Farm Insurance awarded KHK $78,000 to spread the program to other schools. Similar organizations have been set up at high schools in Sacramento, Agoura Hills, and Dana Hills, California. Currently, DeVries and his students are developing curriculum that can be replicated in classrooms throughout n the nation.

KHK members Camryn Crang, Sydney Hess, and Ava Castanha serve at the VIP reception.

oncrete is a ubiquitous material, and its use keeps increasing, having grown twofold in the past 50 years. Concrete is multifaceted, with positives of good durability, long life, and great structural strength, and negatives of being a heavily extractive industry and one that produces more than 8 percent of the world’s greenhouse-gas emissions (GHG). Concrete is principally a mix of cement, aggregates, and water. It is the manufacture of the cement component that generates the bulk of the GHG emissions —half coming from the chemical process of breaking down calcium carbonate and the other half from the energy needed to drive the process. Every phase in the life of concrete produces emissions, beginning with raw material extraction and manufacturing; continuing through construction, operation, and maintenance; and ending with waste management and recycling. Numerous strategies are being tested to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete. One of the most promising substitutes other ingredients—fly ash, rice husk, or silica fume ash—for cement. Using these singly or in combination can replace, one-forone, the cement by 50 percent or more. The result is a more workable, albeit slower-curing, concrete, one that uses less water (up to 30 percent less) and that ends up significantly stronger. The impact of these modified concrete blends is substantial, for they reduce GHGs by the same percentage as the reduction of the cement. Furthermore, fly ash and rice hulls are waste products that typically end up in landfills. Although we think of these as innovations, by Dennis Allen the Romans were using similar ingredients in their concrete 2,000 years ago. Some of their concrete structures endure to this day. Other strategies to reduce the environmental impacts of concrete are crushing and recycling old concrete into road base or for aggregate in new concrete mixes. This saves energy and land degradation from reduced mining. Slag, a waste product from iron blast furnaces, is increasingly being used as aggregate in concrete formulas, similarly cutting cement and emissions. Not all cement factories are equal in their pollution and carbon impact. Thanks to state regulations, California’s cement factories pollute half as much as their dirtiest counterparts in other states and other countries. Assembly Bill 262, the Buy Clean California Act that passed late last year, was opposed by the largest multinational cement makers. The law requires companies doing business with the state to disclose the GHG emissions of their products. California spends, on average, $10 billion a year on infrastructure projects. Those companies that abide by California regulations, i.e., that create the least pollution, will be most likely to get the state’s contracts. This puts pressure on cement manufacturers outside the state to clean up their acts — a win not only for California but for the entire planet.
