hen my son James was little, his fantasy wish list included living in a house with a huge slide coming out of the upper-story windows. In this dream home, he would be able to jump on the slide, swoosh down to the yard, and run back into the house and upstairs to do it all over again. This long-ago fantasy popped into my head as I toured the beautiful contemporary home for sale at 4517 Vieja Drive in Hope Ranch last week. The memory may have been triggered by the awesome tree house on the hillside or the putting green in the backyard, both of which would be the fodder for many people’s dreams. The open floor plan, vertical spaces, and many balconies also made it easy to envision gazing — or even sliding — out the windows. I was impressed with the details of this stylish home before I even stepped inside. The terraced front yard features palm trees, native grasses, and drought-tolerant plants along the front walkway. Subtle touches like colorful tiles on the risers on the steps and the circular red-brick detailing under the eaves near the front roofline were indications that something special awaited within.
Flanked by terra-cotta planters, the double front door opens onto a great room comprising kitchen, dining, and living-room areas. Every surface gleams, from the stunning wood floors to the quartz kitchen counters and the multiple sets of French doors and multipaned windows. Although this main level is the ground floor, a balcony from the living room opens onto a deck that looks down onto the backyard below. The effect is one of being elevated — as if you’re in a tree house. The dining room also opens onto a huge side patio, perfect for extending this great room into the great outdoors. The kitchen features a stainless farmhouse sink, high-end appliances, and a white, neutral palette that helps it blend into the other living areas. Huge circular iron chandeliers define the dining space, while a dramatic fireplace anchors a cozy seating area in the living room and offers a beautiful contrast to the contemporary lines and multitude of windows. The three bedrooms are upstairs, with the master suite separated from the other two bedrooms for seclusion, yet still close enough for

Before I drove down the long, private driveway and through the iron gates out into Hope Ranch, I gazed again at the tree house perched in the branches of a sycamore tree. I realized that even without James’s fantasy slide, this house — along with Hope Ranch’s private beach, horse-riding trails, and tennis courts in an idyllic setting — would fulfill most people’s housing dreams.

Museum of Art Holds Preview Reception
O
n January 27, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art
held a preview reception for not one but three new exhibit openings: Brought to Light: Revelatory Photographs in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Collection; Crosscurrents: The Painted Portrait in America, Britain, and France, 1750-1850; and Crosscurrents: American and European Portrait Photographs, 1840-1900. An exclusive VIP reception for major donors, trustees, and other special guests was followed by a reception for all museum members, which together drew about 375 guests. Curious guests eagerly checked out the sprawling, interesting exhibits while mingling and enjoying drinks and appetizers. In the short program, Director and CEO Larry Feinberg welcomed the guests and introduced the “man of the hour,” Curator of Photography and New Media Charles Wylie, who curated the Brought to Light exhibit. Wylie shared how this was his largest exhibit to date and thanked the donors who made the exhibit possible, including Joan Almond, who has donated 66 works to the museum, a handful of which are in the current exhibit. Wylie explained that the exhibit shows unusual examples of artists whom we think we might know very well and works, both new to the collection and older ones, that have not been seen before. To create the exhibit of 60 photographs, Wylie culled through the museum’s collection of nearly 8,000 photos. By showing lesser-known and unusual images of artists, the exhibit seeks to reveal new insights into the artists’ work. One of the other new exhibits, Crosscurrents: The Painted Portrait, explores the dynamic dialogue among artists in these countries that endured despite the political

antipathies during this time. In this pre-photography era, painted portraits were of utmost importance. The other new exhibit, Crosscurrents: Portrait Photographs, assembles 100 striking works from the museum’s collection. It reveals how during this period, photographic portraiture evolved from mimicking portrait painting to emphasizing technical properties of the medium itself. The underlying premise of this evolution was that photography was an art form in its own right. All three exhibits opened to the general public on January 28. Brought to Light runs through April 22; the others run through May 27. The museum continues to offer two other exhibits: its Highlights of the Permanent Collection (ongoing) and its Story-Telling: Narrative Paintings in Asian Art (through February 25). The museum is offering free admission through February 28 in the belief that the power of art will provide solace, healing, and a source of inspiration in these trying times. A huge thank-you goes to Clay Tedeschi and the Charles Bloom Foundation, whose gifts made this possible. The museum is in the midst of a massive, $50 million renovation project that will address critical needs of the facility, including seismic retrofitting and replacing aging roof and mechanical systems. The existing footprint will largely be kept, but the renovation will increase gallery space by 25 percent by making more efficient use of the space. It will allow the museum, for the first time, to include permanent photography galleries. The capital campaign has raised an impressive $33.2 million, but that still leaves nearly $17 million to raise. While the museum will remain open throughout the renovation, the State Street entrance

he American Institute of Architects was established in 1857, the year that James Buchanan was sworn in as the 15th president of the United States and John B. Weller was elected the fifth governor of California. Ten years later, in 1867, the AIA had grown large enough to hold its first national convention in New York City. Although the population of Santa Barbara at that time was only around 2,000, newcomers from the east had begun to arrive in 1848, and they chose to build homes that were reminiscent of the ones they had left behind. As a result, adobe construction slowly gave way to wood. Stearns Wharf, completed in 1872, made it easier to import lumber, and the transition to wooden structures quickened. Victorian became the city’s architectural style of choice, mimicking developments in San Francisco. Santa Barbara’s first professional architect, Peter Josiah Barber, arrived from San Francisco in 1869. By the time of his death in 1905, Barber had designed some 140 buildings in the area and served two terms as the city’s mayor. The city’s second major architect was Thomas Nixon, who designed several buildings that are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The incomparable American architect Bertram Goodhue designed two of his five houses for Santa Barbara: El Fureidis and Val Verde. He also designed the Montecito Country Club in 1916. Julia Morgan, the first woman licensed as an architect in California and the architect of Hearst Castle, was in Santa Barbara for a client meeting on the morning of June 29, 1925, arriving just in time to experience the great 1925 earthquake. She was commissioned to do two buildings in the city: the Margaret Baylor Inn, now the Lobero Building, and the city gymnasium. In 1929, a group including Winsor Soule, John Frederick Murphy, T. Mitchell Hastings, George Washington Smith, and Russell Ray founded the Santa Barbara chapter of the AIA. Throughout its 88 years of existence, the AIA Santa Barbara (AIASB) has promoted intelligent architecture, including support of global issues such as sustainability and resource allocation; national issues such as historical documentation of buildings, design for health and accessibility, disaster recovery, and a schedule for reaching netzero building energy use; and local issues such as archives of plans, consultation on ordinances, and public recognition of quality built works. The year 1969, designated a Celebration of Architecture by AIA National, was an exemplary one for the AIA Santa Barbara. Public programs and seminars displayed the designs of local architects, and an award for local architectural excellence was established as the highest honor of the chapter. It was presented to Lutah Maria Riggs and subsequently named after her. Recognizing the AIASB’s potential to reach a broader audience, members created the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara (AFSB). A donation allowed AFSB to secure for itself and the AIASB a permanent home on the corner of Victoria and Garden streets, which also serves as AFSB’s Art Gallery. Together, AIASB and AFSB compose a partnership that is unusual for a community as small as Santa Barbara. Most architectural foundations are located in larger metropolitan areas such as San Francisco, New York, and Chicago.
