Cute Custom Condo I ’ve always admired the Villa Constance condominiums from afar. They have a retro look, with deco design details such as a circular pattern on their railings, and metal awnings jutting over balconies and porches. Their low-slung profile hugs State Street between Constance and Alamar avenues and extends the entire block over to Chapala Street. This puts Villa Constance in close proximity to the newly hip De la Vina corridor, where eateries like Los Agaves, Yellow Belly, and Handlebar Coffee Roasters now draw crowds of customers from all over town. This enviable location plus its distinctive exterior were enough to make me jump at the opportunity to visit an open house and see inside. The home at 2631 State Street, Unit 1, was a treasure from the get-go. I entered through an arched wrought-iron front gate and found myself on a
cozy flagstone patio, surrounded by a tall hedge. This private patio automatically extends the living space of this onebedroom, one-bath home, creating the perfect spot for coffee or an al fresco reading nook. Huge sliding doors lead into the living room, where hardwood floors and clean lines showcase a larger-than-expected main room, with space for a desk or multiple seating areas. A foyer leads to a central dining room, which could alternatively be used as a den. I walked through into the kitchen, which I realized immediately would likely be my favorite room in this cute house. The kitchen has been remodeled in a contemporary style that still feels comfortable. Variegated horizontal brown tile on the backsplash is set off by clean, white cabinetry and sleek, neutral quartz countertops. Bright and shiny stainless-steel appli-
ances gleam, including a retro oven reminiscent of the building’s exterior. The bathroom is also stylish, with a glass-enclosed shower and farmhouse-style sink in a bright yet subtle tan-and-blue color scheme. The bedroom is larger than expected and opens onto the best surprise of this entire home: another fully enclosed terrace that’s large enough for sunbathing, gardening, or all sorts of entertaining. This back patio wraps around to include a private, landscaped walkway that leads to a back door off the kitchen, providing easy access to Chapala Street and the detached garage. There’s even a small elevated back porch with the telltale art-deco circle motif on the railing and the signature metal awning providing shade as well as style. Before I left Villa Constance, I took a quick detour around the grounds to admire the sparkling pool. Then I slipped out and headed one way up Chapala Street and straight to an afternoon cup of coffee at Handlebar, feeling almost as hip as this dreamy Villa Constance condo.

Bicycle Coalition has worked with our city and county governments to develop a bicycle master plan, which is adding more bike paths, improving the interconnectivity of bikeways, and physically separating more bike lanes from car lanes. Working cooperatively with local governments has enabled the coalition to leverage every dollar it raises into a hundred dollars’ worth of improvements. Cycling raises concerns about safety, but a clear correlation exists between high cycling rates, more cycling infrastructure, and reduced risk of fatalities. Schuetze of the New York Times reported in September 2017, Utrecht, Netherlands, population 330,000, has become one of the most bike-friendly places in the world. The city is just completing a threestory, state-of-the-art bike parking garage next to its train station. When finished, it will have a capacity of 12,000 bicycles. Sensors on the racks link to marquees that give real-time information to riders, making it easier to find an open spot. Ramps allow inside cycling to any floor — a new first for bike parking. In addition, this structure has a bike repair service, air pumps, and a bike-share business. The best part: Bikes park for free, something that hasn’t been offered to cars in urban parking structures for years. by Dennis Allen The physical activity one gets from cycling reduces risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and some types of cancers. Utrecht officials estimate their $55 million annual expenditure on bike infrastructure returns $300 million in socioeconomic benefits that include health-care savings, reduced air pollution, increased productivity, less traffic, and beautiful living. Throughout the Netherlands, deadly bike accidents have decreased 21 percent over the last two decades, while daily ridership has grown 11 percent in just the last decade. It is widely acknowledged that as more people bike, biking gets safer. Copenhagen is considered the most livable city in the world, in no small part because it is so bike friendly. It wasn’t always this way. After World War II, the city became polluted and congested with car traffic. It took concerted and persistent efforts by the public to slowly transform the city into what it is today. With comparable, if not greater, natural beauty, and with impressive biking infrastructure improvements in the works, Santa Barbara could rival Copenhagen or any other bike-friendly European city. Moreover, all these advancements pay big dividends in reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Cars are the biggest source of global-warming carbon in S.B. County.
uring his famous voyage to the Galápagos Islands, Charles Darwin noticed that the finches differed markedly from island to island. Each group had uniquely shaped bills that helped them feed on the different foods indigenous to each island. These observations influenced his 1859 book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life, a work still considered the foundation of evolutionary biology. These days, ornithologists don’t even consider Darwin’s finches on the Galápagos to be true finches, instead classifying them as members of the tanager family (Thraupidae). Still, finches or not, one of my goals in life, as that of many other biologists, is to visit the Galápagos, to see the amazing animals that live there. Luckily we don’t have to go far to see true finches (family Fringillidae). In my own garden near Lompoc, house finches, lesser goldfinches, and sometimes the larger American goldfinch visit. Last spring, on a wildflower trip to the Carrizo Plain National Monument — a spectacular natuBACKYARD WILDLIFE ral area that must always remain protected — I watched a by Sally Isaacson flock of pretty Lawrence’s goldfinches feeding among the grasses. While most local finch species are not threatened, the Lawrence’s goldfinch, which I’ve also seen in the Santa Ynez Valley, is on the Watch List, which identifies species likely to become endangered. House finches often nest above my house porch, under the eaves of my barn, and around the old adobe at Arroyo Hondo Preserve, where I work. They make a bit of a mess, but it is worth it. These lovely little birds are here all year long, entertaining me with their cheerful songs. The males can be quite colorful, some having especially bright red and yellowish feathers. The carotenoid pigments in the different fruits they eat determine the intensity of their colors. The lesser goldfinches seem to be here today and gone tomorrow, magically appearing when the sunflower heads are drying in my garden. During the summer, I have seen fairly large numbers of goldfinches out in the hills, feeding on thistle seed, and drinking from livestock water troughs. Then suddenly they disappear, and we have to wait for another season to see these busy little birds again. All finches can be attracted to your garden by hanging bird feeders or seed-filled finch socks. Goldfinches especially like the tiny black Ethiopian nyjer seed, found where pet supplies are carried. The imported seeds are sterilized so they will not germinate, but keep your seed fresh if you want to attract birds. Also, a reliable water source is important. They often sip from my dogs’ water dish, and my neighbors have a small recirculating fountain that turned their garden into a bird haven. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service helps ranchers help wildlife through this long drought, including a program for installing special ramps on water troughs to allow birds and small mammals to drink without drowning. Exotic finches, often kept in cages, have escaped, forming feral flocks around the country. The nutmeg mannikin (a k a scaly-breasted munia or spice finch), native to Southern Asia, can be seen around Santa Barbara. Not a true finch, it is from the oldworld group the estrildid finches (family Estrildidae) and has recently been added to California’s official list of naturalized birds. It is too soon to know what effect this species might have on native bird populations.
