MAKE MYSELF AT HOME

ADDRESS: 2010 Garden Street STATUS: On the market PRICE: $4,575,000

Rover the Dog Statue Speaks Up

I

’ve been standing in the same spot for more than 100

years, at the corner of Garden and Mission streets in Santa Barbara. People have written about me, admired me, and taken thousands of pictures of me. They’ve dressed me up, they’ve kissed me for good luck, and they’ve written hundreds of letters to me. They’ve made up lots of different stories about me and my history: some that are close to the truth, others that are fabricated and quite fanciful. But no one has ever asked me to tell my own story. Until now. So here goes. My name is Rover, and I live at 2010 Garden Street. Well, I live on the lawn in front of 2010 Garden Street to be exact. I’ve had several families over the years, but I’ve only had one home. I’ve been paying attention all these years, so I can tell you all about my house and its history. My house was built in 1894 by a man named William H. Crocker. He built five houses in a row, all along Garden Street, on land that was previously part of the olive orchard at the Old Mission Santa Barbara. Mr. Crocker was influential in the early days of California—helping to bring the railroad here and to define the architectural styles of the time. He hired an architect named Arthur Page Brown, who designed the Ferry Building in San Francisco and the California Building at the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893, to build these five houses in what was to be called the Mission Revival style. They were the first lath and stucco homes in the Santa Barbara area. My house served as Mr. Crocker’s vacation home when he was in Santa Barbara. He sold it 10 years later to my original family, the Willets. They moved here from Michigan in 1904 and brought me with them.

The exterior of my house includes a handsome, column-lined patio across the front and around the side, plus a second story with gorgeous signature windows across the façade and up top in the attic. There’s a red-tile roof that I’m told is replicated an infinite number of times throughout the city, and even though I haven’t seen horses ride by in years, we still have the hitching posts out front as part of the decorative wall around the house. In the backyard, even though I can’t quite see it, I know there’s a pool. Judging by the number of people who come to play in it, and the amount of noise they make splashing and laughing, it’s gotta be a big one. You might think my knowledge of the house is limited to the exterior. But like I said, I’ve been paying attention. Inside, I’m told that there are two staircases: a grand one in the front living area and a smaller one in the back that leads up from the kitchen to the bedrooms and even keeps going all the way up to the attic. There are four bedrooms, and at least six bathrooms, including a special one off the master suite that has one of the biggest, coolest showers some of the humans have ever seen. They also like to comment on the fireplaces. Even though it’s pretty warm here in Santa Barbara most of the time, my house has six different fireplaces, including two in the master bedroom suite. One of my little girls said that her favorite part of the house was her bedroom because it has a circular window seat with special curved benches built to fit because her room was built into a tower. She said that the bench seats lift up to reveal hiding places underneath. She told me about it because she wished she could hide me up there in her room so I could protect her while she sleeps.

I know that my most recent owners have spent lots of time and love fixing up the house. I’ve heard them talk about things like radiant heating, water and electrical systems, new marble in the kitchen, and refinished hardwood floors. It sounds as though they’ve taken meticulous care of the original parts and then added on new details in the same style. The house is elegant but not too fancy. I’ve seen the humans come and go here, and they all love the house and love its history. They love me so much that they dress me up for every different holiday. They even protected my muzzle with a mask when the ash from the fire made it hard to breathe. They fixed my tail when it broke off from kids riding on my back, and they rescued me when I got kidnapped and ended up on the principal’s desk at Santa Barbara High School. Now my house is for sale again. That hasn’t happened very many times in the 114 years that I’ve been standing guard. Every time it has, the humans who move in take very good care of my house and me, and I take care of them. I’m sure the next family who adopts me—and my famous house — will live here happily ever after.

2010 Garden Street is currently for sale in Santa Barbara, listed by Colleen Beall of Compass. Reach Colleen at 895-5881 or colbeall@gmail.com.

Interfaith Sanctuary Alliance Holds Fundraiser for 805 Undocufund

O

n February 11, the Interfaith Sanctuary Alliance of Santa Barbara (ISA) held its Food & Fun event at the First United Methodist Church Santa Barbara to raise funds for undocumented immigrants affected by the Thomas Fire and mudslides. Undocumented immigrants have been severely impacted but are not eligible for FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) assistance. Net proceeds from the event were to go to the 805 Undocufund, a fund established by organizations based in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties to assist these individuals in the aftermath of the disasters. The fund is run by CAUSE (Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy), MICOP (Mixteco/ Indígena Community Organizing Project), and Future Leaders of America (FLA). The McCune Foundation is providing leadership support, and the Ventura County Community Foundation is providing administrative support. The fund has attracted some major donors, including Direct Relief ($100,000), the Annenberg Foundation ($50,000), the California Wellness Foundation ($50,000), and the Santa Barbara Foundation ($40,000), but fundraising efforts continue in earnest to try to reach its $1 million goal. During the short program, ISA Steering Committee Member Reverend Mark Asman welcomed the guests and explained that ISA’s mission is “to ensure the dignity, safety, and human rights of all people, while resisting unjust policies and practices that target and discriminate against immigrant communities.” He noted the long-standing commitment of faith traditions to the concept of sanctuary. CAUSE Policy and Communications Associate Frank Rodriguez served as master of ceremonies, explaining the 805 Undocufund and rallying the crowd for donations. The spacious Fellowship Hall was full of supporters enjoying tacos from B’s Tacos and desserts made by volunteers, with all proceeds going to the fund. The Calamari Brothers provided great tunes, and then DJ Rafaell Rozendo cranked the tunes for dancing. The Thomas Fire and mudslides had a huge economic impact on undocumented immigrants. Some apartment complexes and farmworker housing were damaged or destroyed. Many undocumented immigrants who work for Montecito residents and commercial establishments have lost several weeks of income, and many continue to

suffer from lost wages. Others who live in Ventura County and work in Santa Barbara lost wages during the 12-day shutdown of Highway 101. Many incurred extra childcare expenses when schools were closed. Some farmworkers, who number 26,000 in Ventura County and 18,000 in Santa Barbara County, lost wages when their employers shut down due to the poor air quality during the fires. Landscape workers throughout the two counties were similarly impacted. CAUSE estimates that there are 40,000 undocumented immigrants in Santa Barbara County and 80,000 in Ventura County. According to CAUSE Executive Director Maricela Morales, “As our community picks up the pieces from this disaster thanks to government assistance and homeowners insurance, we need to remember the thousands of local immigrant families who have been economically impacted and are struggling to make ends meet without help.” FLA Executive Director Eder Gaona-Macedo shared that “undocumented workers have long been the backbone of our local economy by forming a large part of the service sector … It’s time for our community to pull resources and provide solidarity to our most disenfranchised community members.” Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for any cash assistance from FEMA. While they are eligible for some other limited disaster relief services, their undocumented status and limited English proficiency deter many of them from seeking assistance. Direct Relief’s $100,000 donation, stated President and CEO Thomas Tighe, was motivated by “an understanding that disasters often weigh heaviest on the most vulnerable among us.” The fund is based on the Undocufund established in Northern California after the Tubbs Fire, which has assisted more than 1,000 immigrant families. INDEPENDENT REAL ESTATE

FEBRUARY 15, 2018

realestate.independent.com

by Michael Redmon

Author Charles Fishman carries water on his head in Jargali, India.

Educating Girls Is a Win on Many Fronts A

cross India and many parts of Africa, Latin America, and Asia, millions of girls are literally trapped by having to walk to obtain and carry water each day for their families. As a result, most don’t go to school. This pattern leads to these countries giving up a huge pool of labor, energy, creativity, and talent. “Water poverty,” the phrase used to describe this entrapment, often means one may never learn to read, may get sick more often than one should, and may not be able to earn sufficiently to help keep family hunger at bay. More than half a billion people around the world rely on foot-supplied water each day. Charles Fishman, the best-selling author of The Big Thirst, describes making a mile-long trek with 13 Indian village girls and women to fetch water. One 11-year-old girl returned to her village carrying five gallons, 44 pounds, of water on her head. Fishman only managed half that quantity, two and a half gallons, yet still needed two rest breaks and arrived thirsty and with aching neck and shoulders. The local young men were amused because he was the only male carrying a water container. This village was more fortunate than many, for the round-trip could be made in an hour. The trip each morning and each afternoon framed the day but didn’t totally consume it for the girls, thus allowing them to go to school. Enrolling and keeping girls in school is one of by Dennis Allen the most potent strategies for addressing climate change. According to the Brookings Institution, “The difference between a woman with no years of schooling and with 12 years of schooling is almost four to five children per woman.” Education of women is one of the most powerful steps for breaking the cycle of poverty, while also mitigating greenhousegas emissions by decreasing population growth. Women often act as stewards and managers of food, soil, trees, and water. As they become more educated, they become formidable social and economic agents, able to reduce vulnerability to natural disruptions and climate change. They develop more ways and options of studying, understanding, and acting to sustain their communities and all who depend on them. They enrich their soils, use water more effectively, and select plants and trees that have higher yields than traditional crops when faced with heat waves, droughts, and storms of increasing intensity. In focusing on fetching water as perhaps the biggest barrier to girls getting educated and its consequences on our climate, it is also important to know that most water problems are due to poor planning and mismanagement. In India, for example, there is plenty of water, sufficient money available, plenty of technical expertise, and plenty of smart, trained people. India’s water challenges, as is the case in most of the rest of the world, are solvable. The issue is political will.

HISTORY 101

Casa Loma Service Station

Beautiful Gas Stations B

eginning in 1931, the Plans and Planting Branch of the Community Arts Association held a number of countywide competitions in a drive to encourage oil companies to improve the appearance of their service stations. During the 1930s, the chair of the Plans and Planting Branch was Pearl Chase, whose name became synonymous with community activism. The Community Arts Association, founded in 1922, was made up of four branches, Music, Drama, the School of the Arts, and Plans and Planting. The purpose of the Plans and Planting branch was “to suggest and consider plans for the improvement and beautification of the city … to serve as a clearinghouse for discussion … which shall enhance the beauty and charm of the city.” Plans and Planting was a major force behind the movement to remodel buildings in the Spanish Colonial Revival style and thus give Santa Barbara a unified architectural look. It sponsored competitions of small home designs in cooperation with the national Better Homes Movement in America. The Planting Committee sponsored flower shows, organized children’s groups to plant gardens, and also sponsored tours of notable gardens in Santa Barbara, Hope Ranch, and Montecito, all geared to inspire and inform the public. Chase became chair of Plans and Planting in 1927. One of her special interests was the beautification of the area’s roadways. She was instrumental in eliminating unsightly billboards along the South Coast. Beginning in the mid-1920s, Plans and Planting handed out awards to owners of buildings the committee felt were particularly outstanding. For example, among the buildings bestowed with an honor in 1926 were the San Marcos Building and St. Anthony’s Seminary; winners in 1927 included the Biltmore Hotel and La Cumbre Country Club. Service stations were part of this mix. In 1926, the Standard Oil Station on the Coast Highway in Montecito was singled out, but there was no separate competition just for service stations. That changed in 1931. In March, a Competition for Improvement in Appearance of Service Stations in Santa Barbara County, California was announced, in cooperation with various garden clubs, chambers of commerce, and other agencies. Categories included landscaping, improvements in landscaping, and appearance of buildings and signage. Cash prizes ranged from $40 down to $15. Certificates of Award would also be bestowed on participants. The committee traveled to inspect and photograph each entry. Significantly, the competition included the entire county from Santa Maria to Carpinteria. Competitions were held in 1931, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, and 1938. In 1937, 124 stations up and down the county were surveyed. “Highest Class” stations received four stars. Overuse of signage was discouraged, as was the utilization of outdoor racks for oil products. Some stations were downgraded for not keeping tools in good order. Signage was weighted as 35 percent of the overall score, while landscaping accounted for 30 percent. Eleven stations received the highest rating while at the other end of the scale four received honorable mention. Chase worked hard to get full cooperation from station owners. She wrote to the national headquarters of oil companies to ensure compliance, the letters often accompanied by photographs of stations she considered substandard. By the end of the decade, Santa Barbara County was dotted with service stations that were truly architectural gems. As Pearl Chase argued, “Good style is good business,” and big oil listened.

Michael Redmon is the director of research at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum.
