I

visited Portland last week and got to enjoy snow flurries, sunshine, pouring rain, and one crisp, cold afternoon that felt like a definitive winter day. I felt as though I experienced all four seasons within a span of just four days. When I got back to Santa Barbara on Sunday, I drove straight to the sunny hills of Summerland to visit an open house at 2370 Golden Gate Avenue. Even at the end of February, true to its name, Summerland was sporting clear blue skies, and the house played right along, sparkling in the afternoon sun, painting an idyllic picture of year-round summertime. I knew I was back home. This adorable two-bedroom, two-bath cottage has been christened the Sea Horse House. It sits between Golden Gate Avenue and little oneblock Emerson Street so that it enjoys entrances from both streets. Enter from Emerson through a decorative wooden gate set into a sandstone wall and framed by a handsome olive tree. A path leads through a winsome terraced garden dotted with boulders and showcasing dramatic succulents and takes you to either the main house or the separate, adorable guest cottage. The main house is flooded with light and takes full advantage of its awesome ocean views from every room. The first floor consists of a great room with two distinct living areas, a large living room, plus an airy kitchen perfect for entertaining. One side of the great room is elevated up two steps and features a huge sandstone fireplace set into the far wall. Built-in benches on either side of the fireplace provide intimate seating nooks, and touches like a plate rail and niches for artwork create interesting details all around. This section of the house feels bright and beachy, with whitewashed, wideplank floors and a huge deck outside to extend the space. On the other side of the kitchen, a separate living room has hardwood floors and a dramatic open-beam white ceiling. Built-in shelves and

bookcases lend additional notes of interest, and an octagonal window inset way up high adds a touch of nautical flair. A separate office just off the living room has an enclosed-porch feel and would make a perfect craft room or even a little library space. But the view in this room really steals the show. The ocean and Channel Islands are framed by the living room windows, and a double door out onto the deck all but dares visitors to step outside for a closer look. After another minute or two of gazing out at the turquoise sea and sky, I tore myself away to tour the upstairs. Fortunately, the master bedroom offers equally stunning vistas, with multi-paned, shuttered windows framing the ocean view. There’s an en suite bathroom with a large shower and dual sinks. The whole upstairs feels a bit like a treehouse, perched high up in the house and on the hill. That feeling is carried through to the adorable back guest cottage. A curved staircase winds from a lower bedroom to the upstairs, where another bedroom offers one of the most alluring details on the whole property. A little Juliet balcony opens up from the tip-top of the guest cottage for a view out over the backyard and a side deck area all the way to the ocean beyond. As I walked down the stairs and out the front of the house toward Golden Gate Avenue, I was delighted to see that the front terraced garden is just as varied and beautiful as the back. Native plants mix with boulders and sculptures, with cacti adding dramatic touches. Looking back up at the blue-shingled facade of the house, I noticed a horse weather vane at the highest peak of the rooftop. He was holding steady in the gentle afternoon breeze, and I have a feeling that he points toward summer all year long.

n February 17, the Santa Barbara Vintners

Foundation (SBVF) threw its swanky biennial bash at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, which raised an estimated $1.1 million for Direct Relief (DR). This brings the total raised for DR since the event’s inception in 2000 to more than $5 million. More than 500 guests turned out for the affair, which featured The Bachelor host Chris Harrison as emcee, Chef John Cox from The Bear and Star preparing the three-course meal, and winemakers at every table pouring their finest wines. Upon arrival, guests strolled the red carpet, mingled, and perused the extensive silent auction under a clear tent on the Ballroom Terrace. Actor Jane Lynch comes to the event every year and told me, “There’s something very quiet and effective about Direct Relief. On Sunday, February 18th, the group spent the morning picking up litter on our beloved West Beach. Organized by Explore Ecology and Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, the combined effort brought many Santa Barbara community members to the beach that morning. The YPN group’s findings included many miscellaneous items of trash. The largest litter culprit was the cigarette butts found throughout the sand. Other findings included coffee cups and lids, a sock, straws and bottle caps, lots of styrofoam, and various pieces of rope and string. It was a nice morning down by the water, and the group had a great time cleaning up our Santa Barbara beach. Beach clean ups are a great way to get a nice morning walk in as well as help keep our community looking it’s best. SBAOR Young Professionals Network is a volunteer group dedicated to making a difference in the community. he first royal visit of note occurred in December 1882, when the Marquis of Lorne and his wife, Princess Louise, arrived. The marquis was governor general of Canada, and Louise was a daughter of Queen Victoria of England. The couple stayed at the Arlington Hotel, which spared no expense in seeing that the visitors enjoyed the very best. The royal retinue had six adjoining suites on the second floor, redecorated with new furniture, carpeting, draperies, and wallpaper. The couple enjoyed clear views of the Old Mission in one direction and the blue Pacific to the east. Servants were housed in an adjoining wing of the hotel. During their visit to the Old Mission, Louise was allowed to enter the garden, which at that time was off-limits to women. They took carriage trips out to the Mesa, the beach, and Montecito. They attended performances at the Lobero Theatre and made the social rounds. Their 13-day stay remains the longest royal visit to Santa Barbara. More than 500 people greeted King Kalākaua of Hawai‘i when his train arrived in January 1891. Three carriages elegantly decorated with golden harness transported the royal party to the Arlington. The king visited the Ellwood Cooper ranch in Goleta and was fascinated by its olive oil processing plant. A formal dress ball was held in the king’s honor at the Arlington with the crème de la crème of Santa Barbara society. Tickets went for three dollars. The king had taken ill earlier that day and only stayed through the first dance. He decided to cut his California tour short, but his health continued to worsen. He died at age 54 in San Francisco only two weeks after his visit here.

Some 5,000 Santa Barbarans gathered at the depot on October 11, 1919, to meet King Albert and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium. The two were unassuming people and loved to mingle with the locals with a lack of security unthinkable today. The royal couple and their son, Prince Leopold, stayed with the William Bliss family at their Montecito estate, Casa Dorinda. Almost immediately, the young royals made for the beach, where the queen enjoyed the sun and surf in a bathing suit of “foreign style.” The next day, the king took a spin in one the Loughead brothers’ seaplanes. The Lougheads later changed the spelling of their last name to Lockheed. Prince Leopold took off on a motorcycle ride to Summerland. When the bike broke down, he tinkered with it until the engine came back to life. Other jaunts included the Old Mission, a Goleta Valley walnut ranch (walnuts were a favorite of the king), the public library, and a walk down State Street. During the latter, Albert treated himself to an ice-cream soda. A visit to the Flying A movie studios resulted in the king being captured on film. He then watched his “performance” in that day’s “rushes.” The entire city was entranced by the openness and energy of the Belgians. A short time after the visit, the City Council decreed that a portion of what is now Alameda Padre Serra be named King Albert Boulevard. That section of road became part of APS in 1932. The next crowned head of Europe would visit 51 years later, when Queen Elizabeth was honored by the city.
