The West Beach Villas A cute little corner of West Beach has been transformed into one of the newest luxury living options in Santa Barbara. Literally across the train tracks from the Amtrak station, a stone’s throw from MOXI and the Hotel Californian, and right down the street from Stearns Wharf and the harbor, the West Beach Villas are at the epicenter of everything that epitomizes Santa Barbara’s best beachfront living. The West Beach Villas comprise seven townhomes situated on part of the land that was once occupied by the Potter Hotel, a 600-room landmark that attracted visitors to Santa Barbara’s waterfront in the beginning of the 20th century. Completed in 2017, three of the seven homes at the West Beach Villas have already been sold. I toured the four remaining units on a blustery afternoon last week. At 116 West Yanonali is a three-bedroom, three-and-ahalf-bath home located on the corner of the development closest to the train station. I walked up a brick path and

through the arched doorway to find myself in a dramatic, east-facing great room with huge windows showcasing an outdoor courtyard and the mountain views beyond. The gourmet kitchen is certain to be a gathering place, with both counter seating and enough space for a dining table. A fireplace in the corner of the living room made for a cozy focal point on this rainy day. I admired the laundry room next to the garage, but I almost missed the doorway into the master suite, which contains a bedroom plus a luxurious marble bathroom. Upstairs are two more en suite bedrooms. All the bathrooms feature glass-enclosed showers, sleek quartz counters, and custom cabinets. Up one more staircase I discovered my favorite “room” in the house: an outdoor rooftop patio with enough space for a large fireworks-watching party on the Fourth of July, or a great al fresco dinner party almost any night of the year. I toured the other three available homes and found unique details in each. Number 118 has a charming Juliet balcony off the upstairs master suite, and 120 quite possibly boasts the most impressive rooftop views. The unit at 124 West Yanonali, with the lowest asking price of all four homes, just might be

my favorite home of the bunch. Its master suite is on the third floor and features a deliciously deep soaking tub in the master bath. A bathtub with a view always steals my heart, and this one is no exception. Fortunately, since I’m just looking, I can enjoy all four of these homes. They all have state-of-the-art conveniences, like elevators from the garages to the rooftops, and first-class details, like copper gutters and iron accents. The homes flaunt a quintessential Santa Barbara look, with red-tiled roofs and bright-white walls. Even though raindrops were falling during my visit, with their succulent-filled gardens and palm-laden courtyards, plus their mountain and ocean views, the West Beach Villas still managed to exude an ever-summer Santa Barbara style.

Kick Ash Bash Celebrates First Responders

O

n February 25, more than 3,000 people gathered at Bella Vista Ranch and Polo Club in Summerland for the One805 Kick Ash Bash, a phenomenal, star-studded event that celebrated first responders and netted more than $1.7 million. Costs were kept to a minimum thanks to organizers, performers, and many vendors donating their time and services. Generous sponsors, including lead sponsor Yardi Systems, allowed for free tickets for 2,300 first responders. Brief, poignant speeches were interwoven with amazing musical performances by Katy Perry, Kenny Loggins, Alan Parsons, Katharine McPhee, Richard Marx, Wilson Phillips, The Sisterhood Band, Glen Phillips, Steve Vai, Dishwalla, David Foster, and others. Emcee Dennis Miller entertained the crowd throughout the day, and numerous other stars made appearances, including Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Connors, and Jane Seymour. Ashley Katy Perry Iverson, whose husband, firefighter Cory Iverson, lost his life in the Thomas Fire, also gave a touching speech. Event cochairs Eric Phillips and Patrick Nesbitt welcomed the crowd, introduced senior members of firstresponder agencies, and deeply thanked them and their staff. The most touching moment in a day filled with them was when Lauren Cantin, a 14-year-old girl who was pulled from rubble under her house in the 1/9 Debris Flow, passionately sang “God Bless America,” with the Adderley School Choir in the back- Ellen DeGeneres ground, and then was joined onstage by Montecito Fire Captain Ben Hauser and Montecito Firefighter Andrew Rupp, who played critical roles in her rescue. Perry, who wowed the crowd in a surprise performance, described herself as a “real 805 girl,” having been born in Goleta and later having lived in Montecito. She expressed her thanks to the first responders and community volunteers. DeGeneres cautioned how “the news has moved on, but we have not moved on,” saying she will continue to do everything she can to raise awareness for this disaster. A

In an interview, Eric Phillips shared how “the part that touched me the most was seeing how the children were able to joyfully engage with first responders. That really was a testament to the sense of hope and relief that we wanted to impart with One805. Our community’s children are feeling happy again — and first responders got to witness that firsthand. It’s reciprocated soul medicine for everyone who was part of it.” Event Committee Member Nina Phillips related how they wanted first responders to be easily identified so people could thank them. She created ID lanyards with a unique color for each group, which “became their symbolic badges of honor … The look of pride that families had for their heroes was priceless.” Santa Barbara City Fire Chief Pat McElroy said that he was overwhelmed by the event and that he was so happy to see first responders coming out, for a change, and starting to enjoy some things again. Across the sprawling estate, various first-responder agencies exhibited their vehicles, and for the kids, there were loads of attractions, including a very popular Ferris wheel. A committee comprising first responders and two event committee members will allocate the funds raised for (1) equipment for first responders; (2) the At-Ease Program, which provides counseling to first responders; (3) debris flow survivors; (4) scholarships for first responders’ children; and (5) the Santa Barbara Equine Assistance and Evacuation Team. The first-responder equipment will include two mobile command centers and other items requested by agencies in the aftermath of the disasters. As for the At-Ease Program, according to Santa Barbara Firefighter Alliance President Paul Cashman, it is literally saving the lives of first responders after the recent disasters. The survivor component will be managed by Direct Relief, with funds going to the next of kin of those who lost their lives, those

Hemp in construction has an ancient history. Bridges, for instance, were made with hemp mortar in ancient Gaul during the sixth century. Today it is starting to be used regularly in Europe and Canada. A seven-story office tower incorporating it was recently completed in France. There are now about 50 homes built with hemp in the U.S. The biggest barrier is legalization. This January, California legalized use of the plant in full. The federal farm legislation of 2014 allowed hemp’s cultivation for some research purposes, but to build with hemp requires a special permit. Efforts are intensifying to get hemp certified by building codes, thus ending the current one-off approval process.

s cannabis is being legalized and gaining recreational and medicinal use in more and more areas, it is also showing potential to transform the building sector. Another variety, Cannabis sativa, is a fast-growing, weed-like plant that flourishes in a wide range of climates and soil conditions. It can grow up to 15 feet with stalks an inch in diameter. For building purposes, it is the plant’s inner layer that gets combined with lime and water to be made into construction material. One application is as an infill insulation. Another recently developed product with even greater promise is a large, lightweight (22 lbs.), structural interlocking block. Its dimensions are 8 inches high, 21 inches wide, and 11 inches thick. In appearance it looks like a giant Lego. Labor costs are reduced because the interlocking nubs and lesser weight make for fast assembly. When modification is required, it can be cut with woodworking tools. In addition to its high load-bearing capacity, it is highly resistant to fire, mold, and insect damage. It is considered almost soundproof. The only caveat to its use is it can’t be used for a foundation. The green features of these prefab hemp composite blocks (developed by JustBioFiber Structural Solutions) are impressive:
