Arroyo Springs: Best-Kept Secret on the Mesa
I
followed my Google Map directions last weekend toward an address on Weldon Road. I knew it was somewhere on the Mesa, and like many in-town destinations, there are likely several different ways to get from point A to point B. Google took me up Carrillo to San Andres, onto West Canon Perdido, and then up a long hill on the backside of Loma Alta. I love the view over the city as you climb up that hill. I must not be the only one, because there’s a little roadside park with a bench; a new addition since the last time I traveled that way. The bench, the view, and this charming neighborhood with distinctive vintage streetlights were a welcoming introduction to Arroyo Springs, a sweet little townhome complex on a gently curving street above Santa Barbara City College. Arroyo Springs is composed of 15 townhomes set in a eucalyptus grove in this very central location near the beach, close to the shops and restaurants of the Mesa, and mere minutes from downtown. This hillside enclave spans the area between Weldon Road and Cliff Drive, with entrances on both streets. The townhome at 901 Weldon Road is a spacious twobedroom, two-and-a-half-bath home with a tri-level floor plan. The kitchen, living, and dining rooms are on the main floor and open to each other, yet with an obvious flow and definition of living areas. From the front door,
the living room is down two steps and boasts a sleek, tiled fireplace as its focal point. It feels cozy and spacious at the same time, thanks to its cathedral ceilings and sliding glass doors that open onto the back deck. The dining room and kitchen are to the left of the front door. Both rooms are bright, with light oak floors and white cabinets and appliances. The two bedrooms are upstairs, and each has its own full bathroom and large walk-in closet. Both of these suites have a master bedroom feel to them, and one has the added bonus of a fireplace. The layout is perfect for a roommate situation, whether City College students or professionals. The second bedroom could also be great for guests. In fact, the whole house feels ideal for entertaining. Heading back downstairs, I went down one more level to the bottom floor, which contains the large, attached two-car garage. The garage opens to a parking area with an entrance on Cliff Drive, providing the option of access from both streets. The home also boasts two laundry rooms and plenty of additional storage space. My favorite feature in 901 Weldon is the deck off the living and dining rooms. Before I left, I stepped back onto the deck. I lingered awhile and enjoyed the view, imagining the additional dining and party options that this extended outdoor space provides.
This magical Arroyo Springs townhome will be the perfect new home for a lucky buyer. Under a million dollars on the Mesa doesn’t happen often, and this magical setting, off the beaten path yet still central to everything, makes 901 Weldon Road one of the best-kept secrets in Santa Barbara.

Firefighters Hold BBQ and Poker Fundraiser
O
n March 11, the Santa Barbara City Firefighters Association (SBCFFA) held its eigth annual Mike Moses Memorial Texas Hold’em Benefit Poker Tournament at the scenic Carriage and Western Art Museum. A record 171 players and many other non-playing guests turned out for this sold-out event, which raised an estimated $18,000 for those impacted by the 1/9 Debris Flow. Yes, these are the same firefighters who risked their lives for the community in the Thomas Fire, 1/9 Debris Flow, and countless other fires. They just keep on giving. Every year, SBCFFA holds events to raise funds for worthy causes. Proceeds from this event will be given to nonprofits serving those impacted by the 1/9 Debris Flow. Event Committee Member and Fire Engineer Jeremy Denton shared that they wanted to raise funds because this is their community. They have colleagues and friends whose homes were damaged or destroyed and friends who died. “We are here during the emergencies, but we also want to be here during the recovery.” The event started at high noon with a tritip and chicken barbecue and all the fixings. To maximize the fundraising, firefighters and fire department office workers prepared and served all the tasty food, and thanks to Rincon Brewery, free beer flowed. Adding to the festivities, the Bryan Titus Trio played its fun postmodern-barn-dance music. After lunch, folks adjourned inside for poker. Along with area businesses, Santa Barbara County Fire, Montecito Fire, Santa Maria Fire, and the Santa Barbara Police Officers’ Association bought tables, and there were Ventura County and Los Angeles County firefighters playing as well. Professional dealers managed the 19 tournament tables, and the playing and good times went on all afternoon. Renny Stokes (retired, Los Angeles County Fire) won the grand prize of a Samsung big-screen TV. The event was started to raise funds for Captain Mike Moses, a Santa Barbara City firefighter diagnosed with cancer. Another year, funds went to Santa Barbara City Fire Engineer Kevin
Corbett, also diagnosed with cancer, who has since made a full recovery. In the other years, the proceeds have been donated to numerous area nonprofits, and over the years the event has raised about $220,000. Each year, the SBCFFA also holds a surf contest and a golf tournament to raise funds for nonprofits. The surf contest will be held at Leadbetter Point on March 23, and the golf tournament will be at Glen Annie Golf Club on September 7. All funds raised by the SBCFFA are routed through its 501(c)(3) Charity Fund, which, since its inception in 2004, has raised about $450,000.
