ne of my friends asked me recently whether it’s frustrating to visit so many beautiful houses for sale. “Doesn’t it make you jealous looking at what you can’t have?” On the contrary. Visiting grand mansions and lovely estates doesn’t make me covet them. Oh, sure, a laundry room would be nice. And I wouldn’t say no to a fireplace. But I love my own little house.
However, I will admit that once in a while I walk into a house that feels like it could be mine. It echoes my sense of style and confirms my vision of what my house can and will feel like when I put all the finishing touches on it. That’s what I experienced last week when I toured the charming cottage for sale at 12 Rosemary Lane. I was enchanted before I even stepped foot inside. A Santa Barbara sandstone wall hugs the house, and three steps lead up through a flowering arched hedge with a white picket gate. A curved stone walkway introduces the front yard and the adorable house, with white wood siding and baby-blue shuttered windows and trim. As if the house itself weren’t charming enough, it sits on one of the cutest streets in Santa Barbara: a quiet lane off Eucalyptus Hill and Barker Pass roads, dotted with several Moody Sisters–designed cottages. Once inside, hardwood floors, white wood-beamed ceilings, and wide French doors all vie for attention and
combine to immediately set a tone that is at once bright, comfortable, stylish, and inviting. The living room is at the front of the house, with a cozy stone fireplace and built-in bookshelves. The kitchen is straight through the living room, with the dining room beyond. Large archways echo the beautiful ceilings and define the separate yet open living spaces. Skylights and huge windows let in tons of natural light and provide a spacious, indoor/outdoor feeling. The kitchen is magical, with white wood custom cabinetry, a farmhouse sink, gorgeous travertine counters and tilework, a solid center island, and gourmet appliances. The dining room boasts another fireplace, with a curved mantel and magnificent floor-toceiling stonework. Huge French doors are flanked by an additional set of narrow glass doors that all open out onto the back deck and backyard beyond. The backyard includes a lawn surrounded by a lush green hedge and is accessed from both the dining room and the master bedroom. It’s large enough to be versatile, with distinct spaces for entertaining plus plenty of space to play. As you walk back inside, the attached two-car garage is to the right of the kitchen, with a laundry room and a separate wood shop or storage room tucked behind it. On the other side of the kitchen lies a hallway to the bedrooms. Two bedrooms are on the right, with windows overlooking the front gardens. Both rooms boast custom cabinetry that echoes that in the other rooms, and they share a full bath.
The master bedroom sits at the back of the house, with a lovely en suite master bath, and French doors that open to a private back patio. As I lingered in the kitchen a bit before leaving, I realized that I had almost missed another half bath off the dining room. With turquoise walls, white tile, and distressed white accents, this little powder room perfectly captures the shabby-chic essence of the entire cheerful cottage. I walked back down the garden path with my head full of ideas. I wasn’t jealous of this adorable cottage. But I’ll admit that I might try to emulate one or two of the decor ideas in my own house. And one lucky new homeowner is going to find one of the sweetest houses on one of the most charming streets in Santa Barbara, waiting right there at 12 Rosemary Lane.

O
n March 15, Montecito Bank & Trust (MB&T) celebrated its 43rd anniversary at its main office in its customary and generous way: by giving away money to area nonprofits. During its annual Anniversary Grants celebration, 10 nonprofits chosen by bank associates each received a $2,000 grant from the bank and a promotional video produced by Cox Communications. After a reception, Chair and CEO Janet Garufis warmly welcomed the more than 100 guests and explained how in 1993, MB&T founder and chair Michael Towbes “created Anniversary Grants to celebrate the philanthropic work of our associates and the communities that we serve” and to give each associate “a voice in the direction of the bank’s corporate giving.” She related how this day is one that she and the associates treasure because giving back is “in the DNA of the organization.” Garufis made references to the beloved Towbes, which elicited significant emotion from the audience. “We miss him every day, but we are committed to his mission of making the communities we serve better places to live and work.” She explained how MB&T’s support for the community has traditionally been through philanthropy, but with the recent disasters, the bank has also been a community resource by making emergency loans for rebuilding and for meeting payroll, as well as by delivering water, donuts, and N-95 masks. She also noted that two of the grant recipients were on the scene, the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation and Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue. For the Anniversary Grants, employees nominate area nonprofits, and then each employee casts five votes and rallies colleagues to support their cause. Since inception, more than $300,000 has been granted. Organizations also receive a high-quality video produced by Cox Communications to use in their marketing efforts. During the program, each associate whose organization received a grant shared why they nominated the organization, and then guests got to view the video and hear touching remarks by an organization representative. The enthusiasm the associates have for their organizations was palpable, and the appreciation from the organizations was heartfelt.
Wilderness Youth Project (WYP) Development Director Michelle Howard got lots of laughs when she quipped that entering an MB&T branch feels like entering Cheers, a reference to the old sitcom, where “everybody knows your name.” She shared how WYP has benefited in so many ways from the bank’s generosity, starting with a personal meeting she had with Towbes to learn how to become a successful nonprofit in this town. Solvang Theaterfest Board Chair Chris Nielsen shared how the word “community” “describes the entire ethos of MB&T” and thanked the bank not just for the grant, but “for who you are in our community.” This year’s recipients were Court Appointed Special Advocates of Santa Barbara County (CASA), Dog Adoption & Welfare Group (DAWG), Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy, Many Mansions (Thousand Oaks), Mothers’ Helpers, National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue, Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center, Solvang Theaterfest, and Wilderness Youth Project. Garufis shared a quick history of the bank, starting with its opening in 1975 in a couple of trailers on Coast Village Road. In 2003, the bank started Community Dividends, an annual program in which the bank awards $1 million to nonprofits from Santa Ynez to Westlake Village. Last year, the funds were given to approximately 180 organizations, bringing the cumulative grant amount to $15 million—“not bad for a little community bank,” remarked Garufis. In addition, associates generously donate their time to nonprofits. Last year, more than 5,200 volunteer hours were logged by the bank’s 220 employees. MB&T now has about $1.4 billion in assets and 11 branches. It is the oldest and largest locally owned community bank in the area and serves both businesses and consumers. Its Wealth Management Division provides comprehensive trust services and full investment management. ulti-year drought, distressed forests, and intense wildfires bring awareness of the local impacts of climate change. Efforts to address climate change have long focused on cutting greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions and more recently on sequestering carbon. But because the impacts of climate change are now upon us, we need to add to our efforts resilience planning. What is the focus of these efforts related to our buildings? In reviewing many “green building” programs, the most common characteristics are energy efficiency, water conservation, and selecting materials that are sustainable and used in a resource-efficient way. Because energy use is strongly linked to GHG emissions, reducing energy consumption in homes tends to decrease damage caused by burning fossil fuels. There are many ways to reduce energy use in homes: install more efficient appliances, select higher-performance windows, and/or add thicker insulation. Water conservation makes sense in most regions of the country, excluding only those where fresh water is abundant. In California, water is directly linked to energy, for close to 20 percent of our energy use statewide is consumed in transporting and treating water. Residential water conservation emphasizes careful selection of plumbing fixtures and appliances but also promotes rainwater collection. Choosing materials for a green home involves selecting materials that are naturally renewable (for example, wood from sustainably harvested forests), have recycled content, or are harvested/manufactured regionally. These materials also need to be incorporated into structures as efficiently as possible. Other green building criteria worth considering are the following:

Selecting materials that require less cleaning and less maintenance is also an aspect of durability. by Dennis Allen A green home is small. Scaling down is unpopular with Americans, but it greatly reduces impact. A green home provides superior indoor air quality and promotes human health. Avoiding materials and furnishings that involve toxins and outgassing is key. Good natural and mechanical ventilating is also important. Because transportation involves our biggest consumption of fossil fuel, selecting a location that is close to work, shopping, schools, and public transportation could be the most impactful of all criteria, but is rarely addressed.
Resilience focuses on livable conditions in buildings after a disaster, on backup power, and on access to potable water. These strategies are being woven into “green building” programs but expanded to community scale. Photovoltaics with on-site storage can provide basic services and information during power outages. We know how to build tight buildings out of noncombustible materials to resist wildfires. Mechanical ventilation with HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters can handle smoke and ash from wildfires. Rainwater collection, composting toilets, and recycled water are other resilience strategies.

Architecture and Design at SBCC
L
ying in the heart of the Central Coast, Santa Barbara has a rich heritage of man-made and natural beauty. The built environment needs to respond to the regional context of the landscape and site. Each is equally important, and the interface between the two is what makes this area unique. In light of the recent wildfires and mudslides, we are reminded of the importance of the site and that architecture belongs to the site. We need to respect where we are and how to design and build accordingly. Therefore, there is no better place to have a school for architecture and design. Santa Barbara is located between two major urban centers, Los Angeles and San Francisco. We also have a variety of local resources that we can link to: •UCSB’s architectural archives and programs in art history, new media and technology, environmental studies, and engineering • Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s architectural program •UCLA’s extension programs
In order to provide an avenue for architectural and design education that responds to the local context, it makes sense to tap into Santa Barbara City College, a nationally recognized and awarded educational institution. The new School of Architecture and Design at Santa Barbara City College could integrate potential new programs in architecture, landscape architecture, and industrial design with existing programs in art, planning, drafting, and interior design. The new School of Architecture and Design at SBCC is intended to offer a two-year associate’s degree and certificate program with an emphasis in architecture consisting of 45 semester units. Students who complete the program can either transfer
to a four-year undergraduate architectural program or use the skills they have learned to become architectural technologists, to enter the workforce and be employed in the architectural industry. A proposed schedule of courses includes: 1.1 Introduction to Architecture 2.1 History of Architecture I 2.2 History of Architecture II 3.1 Design Fundamentals 3.2 Architectural Design Fundamentals 3.3 Architectural Design Studio I 3.4 Architectural Design Studio II 4.1 Architectural Construction 5.1 Architectural Communication I 5.2 Architectural Communication II 6.1 Architectural Practice I 6.2 Architectural Practice II 6.3 Architectural Portfolio The architectural design community would like to see the new School of Architecture and Design at SBCC happen. We believe that Santa Barbara is the right place, and this is the right time, to have a homegrown architecture school. Building upon the strong programs that SBCC already offers and expanding upon them to incorporate architecture and design, we can provide a comprehensive design education that is contextual to Santa Barbara but will also have impacts on the global scale.
