Luxe Living in the Haley Corridor M y friend Kristi lives in a set of luxury townhomes at the corner of Montecito Street and Calle César Chávez. Called the East Beach Collection, the homes were built in 2011 when the Funk Zone was just becoming a destination, and addresses on Haley Street from State to Milpas were almost all industrial. The neighborhood was filled with auto mechanics and wood shops, and residential living options were rare. Now, however, the Haley Street corridor is one of the most hopping neighborhoods in town, and the East Beach Collection sits in the center of the action. You’ve got three breweries and two wineries within a four-block radius and great restaurants to choose from—not to mention it’s a short walk to both the beach and the bustle of State Street. One of these townhomes is currently on the market, so I thought I’d drop by the open house to take a peek
and see if I could catch my friend Kristi, too. I visited on Easter Sunday, and although the sky was cloudy, the garden was lush and green, with lilies blooming right on cue. The entrance to 543 East Montecito Street sits behind a fountain in a fenced corner courtyard area of the East Beach Collection, providing an attractive entrée and a setback from the street. The townhome is a fairly rare three-bedroom, twoand-a-half-bath home in a tri-level configuration. The house is LEED certified, with solar power, central air conditioning, and other energy-efficient advantages. Most of the homes in the development have resale restrictions and must be owner-occupied, but this townhome is an exception and carries no such limitations. The front door opens into a large foyer that can serve as a mud room with extra storage or could be set up as an office or cozy den. The attached two-car garage also opens onto this first level. Up a flight of stairs is the main living area of the home. The gourmet kitchen is straight ahead, with the living room to the left. These two rooms are spacious and open to each other, yet they have clearly defined boundaries. The formal dining room is on the other side of the kitchen and has doors that open onto a large covered balcony. Since the home sits on the east side of the development, this balcony enjoys an expansive sunrise mountain view.
Walking back to take a closer look at the kitchen, I learned that this home was one of the original model units in the complex, so its maple floors, granite countertops, cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances are all of the highest quality. They combine for an impressive setting just begging for an enthusiastic chef. There is also a convenient half bath on this level. Beyond the living room lies the staircase up to the top floor. Two of the three bedrooms share one full bath, complete with a deep tub, double-sink vanity, and a glassenclosed shower. The master bedroom has a similarly appointed en-suite bathroom with a separate WC and a walk-in closet. There’s also a stackable washer and dryer tucked into the hall closet, conveniently close to the bedrooms. The newer construction of this home is evident in the recessed lighting, upgraded fixtures, and the seamless flow of the layout. The stairs aren’t for everyone, but the rewards for walking up two flights to the top level include peaceful privacy and lovely mountain and treetop views. I walked through the center of the complex to Kristi’s house, enjoying the gardens along the way. I knew that if I did indeed catch her at home, our biggest decision would be which of the nearby hot spots to visit. Some were likely closed, but many were open and looked bustling. The Easter Bunny wasn’t the only one hopping on this Sunday afternoon.

Food from the Heart Holds Fundraiser
O
n March 29, enthusiastic supporters of Food from the Heart (FFH) gathered for their fifth annual Sips and Nibbles event to raise funds for FFH’s program of providing tasty and nourishing food to homebound, ill individuals. While the event was a fundraiser, it felt more like a group of dear friends gathering for a celebration. A sold-out crowd of about 100 guests mingled in the scenic courtyard at El Paseo and in the tasting rooms of Margerum Wine Company, Happy Canyon Vineyard, and Grassini Family Vineyards while sipping wines from each and sampling nibbles from Wine Cask restaurant, C’est Cheese, Renaud’s Patisserie & Bistro, the Chocolate Gallery, and Food from the Heart’s own professional chef, Aaron Casale. During the brief program, Executive Director Sharon Byrne thanked all of the businesses for generously donating in these difficult times. Founded in 1994, Food from the Heart provides high-quality, nutritious, tasty food to about 160 housebound, seriously ill people each week in Santa Barbara and Goleta. With a lean staff of four part-time employees and a core group of 50 regular volunteers (and many more occasional volunteers), Food from the Heart prepares and delivers a bag of food each week to clients free of charge. The organization’s name, according to Board Chair Kelly Onnen, reflects all the love that goes into each bag of food. Most fruits and vegetables are donated by area residents and harvested by a dozen or so volunteers. Veggie Rescue in Santa Ynez also contributes produce. Bread is donated by Panera Bread, Vons, and Ethnic Breads. Last year, about 50,000 pounds of produce and bread came in. Food that is not used is given to other nonprofits. Volunteers prepare the food under Casale’s direction at Trinity Lutheran Church, which has donated its kitchen and fellowship hall for years. Another group of volunteers packs the food, and another delivers it. The drivers visit with clients, and some assist with chores on separate visits. Each bag contains an estimated $90 worth of food and is designed to last at least four days. Soup, an entrée, a baked casserole, a couple of salads, a bag of fruit, des-
sert, and bread are all included. Not only is the food tasty and nutritious, but it is also visually appealing, which Onnen explained is important to entice clients who have poor appetites. “It’s a fabulous, heartfelt program,” said Onnen.“So many in our community struggle with serious illnesses and lack resources to obtain freshly prepared food that can nourish them back to health. We love being that resource for them. It truly is a calling of love.” Most clients are referred from medical agencies, with many coming through Hospice of Santa Barbara, the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, Cottage Health, and Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care. Clients can self-refer, in which case the vetting is more extensive to ensure a legitimate need. There is always a waitlist, but it is typically short. Triage practice ensures that the most needy always receive food. I spoke with several volunteers, and all of them related how much they enjoy the work — one describing it as a privilege, another as her meditation. Byrne shared how she hadn’t thought “all those people that you read about in fairy tales, the ones who escort the little children out of the woods who are lost” and otherwise render aid, were real, but after coming to FFH, she realized that they are, and they work at FFH. Cash donations and fresh produce donations are always needed. Byrne said that while they are blessed with many wonderful volunteers, they are always happy to welcome new ones to the Food from the Heart family. he collapse of the St. Francis Dam in the wee hours of March 12, 1928, would certainly qualify as one of the largest disasters in our state’s history. An estimated 12 billion gallons of water were unleashed down Los Angeles County’s San Francisquito Canyon to the Santa Clara River in Ventura County and out to the Pacific. In their wake, the waters left more than 400 dead (the exact number never confirmed to this day) and some 1,400 structures wiped out. What happened? The dam had been finished in 1926, located a few miles northeast of today’s Lake Casitas, as part of the Owens River aqueduct system designed to bring ANTEDILUVIAN AND POSTMORTEM: The St. Francis Dam is water to the Los Angeles pictured before and after the devastating 1928 collapse that area. How to Reorganize and Reorient After Upheaval
I
t’s a fact of life that when we face one of life’s great upheavals — it can be from an environmental disaster such as the tragic fire and flood we recently experienced or from major milestones such as a birth, new job, illness, or divorce—the ways we had once successfully organized our lives suddenly run off course. It is good to remember that when life happens, we need to get back to basics. Allow me to mansplain. It’s like Major League Baseball’s spring training. A few weeks before the official season begins, players and coaches meet at a training camp to review and practice the game’s fundamentals. These professionals have played baseball for decades, yet there is a proven benefit to going back to the basics before beginning their quest to win the World Series. Couldn’t we all use a “spring training” to get back on track? What would a gettingorganized spring training tailored just for you look like? Try the following five basic tools and rules to create your vision and to get you going in the right direction. (1) Know what is important and what is not.
(4) Work in time blocks; use a timer.
One of the simplest, smartest, sustainable tools is a timer — even an old-fashioned kitchen timer. A few true “weekend warriors” have the stamina to plow through a project in a flash, but for most of us this type of organizing, sorting, purging, and prioritizing is very draining. Upheavals bring up unexpected emotions that can exhaust you, so set time frames that will match your energy level. I suggest never working more than three hours at a spurt. Take a break when you hear that timer go off.
It is good to remember that when life happens, organizational systems that once helped us stay on track often fall by the wayside, and this is why we need to get back to basics.
First, take a minute to get quiet for a bit; think through what’s important to you now. Make it the center of your organizational plan. For example, a few years ago, I worked with a family after a flood. When we sat down to re-create their systems, they realized not much of what was lost needed to be replaced, which changed their daily organization drastically. Think through this piece, and don’t skip it! (2) Group like with like.
If you are reorganizing after one of life’s milestones, then it’s likely that everywhere you look there is stuff. And more stuff. Every. Where. Begin by simply grouping like with like. Put items together in a manner that makes sense to you: Group by room, by project, by season, by sport, by area of the house, by color, or by your own personal logic. Some semblance of order will start to take hold very soon, and a system will emerge. (3) Position yourself in the center.

Think in concentric circles when setting up spaces, no matter if it’s the kitchen, desktop, office, or garage. Place yourself in the middle of a series of circles. The items you use most often should be placed the closest to you, and the items you use the least the farthest from you. Soon you will find your way back
(5) Ask for help!
Too often we live with clutter and chaos because we won’t ask for help. It could be an ego thing, a shame or guilt thing, or just a good old-fashioned case of perfectionism thing. (Nobody can do it as good as you, right?) Say goodbye to all that, and get some help—family, friends, or hired professionals —anybody who will help you iron out life’s wrinkles after a major shake-up. Did any of the above five steps strike a chord with you? Did you find one particularly annoying? If so, consider that a good sign. It could indicate the path you need to take. Here’s the thing: Getting organized is about clarifying priorities. Period. The end.
And remember: KISS (Keep It Simple, Silly). Don’t overthink it. JUST. GET.
