I

met a Welsh pony named Te Quiero this week. He was all white, including his mane. As I approached his corral, he walked toward me and then stretched his head forward, sweet as could be, encouraging me to pat his nose and looking like he had something to tell me. If this sounds like a crazy Earth Day dream, believe me, it felt like one, too. But it was only one of many dreamlike details that I experienced during my recent visit to the magical estate at 130 Canyon Acres Drive in Santa Barbara last Sunday afternoon. Just off Foothill near North Ontare, Canyon Acres Drive winds above Stevens Park in San Roque. The home at 130 Canyon Acres sits at the very top of the street, at the end of a cul-de-sac. It overlooks San Roque Canyon, over the treetops in every direction, with a view all the way to the ocean: both to the harbor and Hendry’s Beach from the backyard and to UCSB and Goleta from the front of the house. The home was built in 1915 by renowned architect Russel Ray for Julia Watson Horne, who had moved to Santa Barbara from Pittsburgh and set out to establish a prominent residence overlooking her new community. The original estate included a tea house in the canyon so that Horne and her guests could be served tea beside the creek. The tea house reportedly survived at least until the 1960s. The home’s storied past harks back even earlier. One large boulder on the property is historically protected because it was used as a grinding stone by the Chumash. Arrowheads have also been found on the grounds. In the 1940s, the home was converted and used as the Santa Barbara Military Academy, and in the 1950s, five acres of the property were donated to Stevens Park. The house has even had three different addresses in its lifetime, as the land and streets around it have been developed and changed. Walking through the house today, one can see that much of the original character and period details remain. The first floor is dominated by a grand living room with coffered ceilings, sliding pocket doors, original wood floors, and a unique fireplace inlaid with Italian tile. Beyond this room lies a wide-view terrace that runs the length of the house, large enough to comprise a significant outdoor room and perfect for entertaining. The rest of the downstairs contains the dining room, the kitchen, a butler’s pantry with a large built-in breakfast

nook, an office, and a powder room. Two different sets of stairs lead up to the second floor: a grand staircase in the front of the house and a smaller utility staircase in back. The upstairs seems to keep going and going, with two separate wings housing a total of six bedrooms and three baths that could be reconfigured in many different ways. The most appealing part of the second floor is a spiral staircase that leads up to a tower room with a cupola at the very top. This lookout tower — high up above the rest of the house—could be used as an artist’s studio, a cozy reading room, or one of the most unique playrooms ever. The home has only changed hands a few times in its long existence and has been in the same family for almost 60 years. While it retains its period charm, the plumbing, foundation, roof, electric and heating systems, and more have all been recently upgraded. The new owner of this home will get all of the character, but at modern standards. Before I left, I took a quick tour around the outside. The house had already captivated me, but the grounds won me over. An arched breezeway runs the length of the house downstairs. While currently used for storage, the space along this passageway could be used as a wine cellar or recreation room. No matter how it’s used, each of these arched openings frames a delightful view of bougainvillea, fruit trees, and the winding pathways of the estate’s hillside gardens. At almost an acre, there’s plenty of room for a pool and tennis court. Currently, though, the focal point of the grounds is the two-stall barn and horse corrals, where I met Te Quiero. He whinnied as I walked away, seeming to invite me to stay a while longer. I waved goodbye to my handsome new friend as I headed away from what felt like a magical castle on the hill.

CADA Supporters Twist at the Ritz

O

n April 21 at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (CADA) held its 32nd annual Amethyst Ball, which grossed an estimated $500,000 and will help fund its many substance abuse prevention and intervention services. The Twistin’ at the Ritz event featured the legendary Chubby Checker. The evening began with a reception on the ballroom terrace in the warm sunshine, where about 370 guests clad in a mix of vintage cocktail and black-tie attire mingled and perused silent auction items. Guests then adjourned to an elegant ballroom, which Merryl Brown Events had beautifully draped in gray linen overlaid with fuchsia and amethyst graphic projections. Dishwalla opened the evening’s entertainment, and emcee and Director of Corporate Development and Com-

She shared how CADA served about 5,000 people last year, from 8-year-olds in its Mentor Program to teens at its Daniel Bryant Youth & Family Treatment Center and at every school in Santa Barbara County to adults in treatment and detox programs, including its new residential treatment program. Every day, she emphasized, CADA is saving lives. In a video, boardmembers shared poignant stories of their children’s or their own former addictions. Bob Bryant, who lost his son Danny to a drug overdose, related how the pain never ends but that you can be grateful that you can help save other kids. “Our goal is to never have any other family go through the pain of losing a child.” Thus was born CADA’s Daniel Bryant Treatment Center. Andrew Firestone, though having just performed at CALM’s (Child Abuse Listening Mediation) luncheon a few hours before, was still bursting with energy and kept the crowd laughing while raising serious money in the auction and ask. When the bidding stood at $18,000 for a Dario Furlati–catered dinner at Alan and Lisa Parsons’s home, with Dishwalla performing and Margerum wines flowing, Men’s Event Committee Cochair Bob Fuladi and Earl Minnis each spontaneously bid $25,000, and the donors acceded to two dinners. In the ask, fellow Cochair Peter Hilf generously presented a $70,000 check. KEYT was the event’s honoree, being recognized both for hosting CADA’s Mission for Mentors for the past 20 years — which has led to hundreds of new adult mentors for atrisk youth in its Mentor Program — and for its tireless and superb reporting in the recent disasters. hits, Checker moved about the dance floor, partnering with many starstruck fans and bringing several onstage with him. With a $6.2 million budget, CADA operates a full array of programs for youth and adults. While contracts, grants, Medi-Cal, and private insurance provide significant funding, events and contributions make up nearly 20 percent of its budget and allow it to offer services on a sliding fee scale. In the wake of the recent disasters, CADA has experienced an uptick in demand for its services, with stress triggering relapses and new addictions. Its SAVE Employee Assistance Program, which provides counseling to employees of contracting entities and their families, has been in high demand, with services being provided to many first responders, educators, and others impacted by the disasters. CADA’s Resource and Referral Drop-In Center, which provides counseling and referrals to individuals, has also seen an increase in demand following the disasters. According to its director, Stephan Gonzalez, however, demand was rising even before the disasters. He pointed to the increase in opiate use and the increase in excessive alcohol use as a coping mechanism for stresses engendered by the high cost of living and working multiple jobs here. Last fiscal year, the center served more than 2,600 clients.

ur forests perform myriad services: They purify our air, sequester and store carbon from the atmosphere, foster biodiversity, yield products of great value to human societies, stabilize water supplies, protect and enrich soils, and offer us inspiration and happiness. But as climate change accelerates, drawing carbon out of the air has become their most critical role. Trees buffer the worst effects of climate change by incorporating carbon in their growth cycle, thus preventing its return to the atmosphere for dozens or even hundreds of years. Currently, about a third of all human-produced carbon emissions are absorbed by trees and other land plants. Of great alarm, however, is that the planet’s forests are shrinking. They have been reduced by half during the last 300 years. All are in jeopardy because of rising temperatures and increasingly unusual rainfall patterns. These changes inflict more frequent droughts, pest outbreaks, and wildfires. Trees are dying at the fastest rate ever recorded. Californians are only too aware of these shifting patterns. Since 2014, more than 129 million trees have died in California. Our forests have experienced a tenfold increase in mortality in recent years. Seven of the 10 largest fires in California history have occurred since 2003, including December’s Thomas Fire, the largest on record and the state’s first wintertime megafire. Drought-stressed forests are making forest fires more frequent and more damaging. Scientists and conservationists are beginning to shift their thinking from viewing forests as basically static to considering them as inherently changing. Rising temperatures and disruptive rainfall patterns are forcing trees to migrate, on average about two miles per year northward in North America. Trees by Dennis Allen do not migrate easily nor rapidly. Moreover, in California, as elsewhere, trees are struggling to regrow after wildfire burns. Consequently, some conservationists are advocating replanting forests with climate change in mind. Researchers in British Columbia have found that by boosting tree diversity — namely, by adding more broad-leafed deciduous species to predominantly slowgrowing conifer forests—a forest’s capacity for regrowth is increased by up to 40 percent. Introducing novel but native species that are expected to do well in the face of our changing climate is what forest ecologists call “assisted migration.” Although this is a controversial innovation among experts, there isn’t time to wait the decades to study the ramifications of the few experiments that have been initiated. The inherent pressure of climate change adds urgency but also controversy to bold action. With a problem as big as the potential death of many of the world’s forests, more and more conservationists, forest managers, and scientists are realizing that the worst thing we could do is nothing.
