he allure of 2084 Alisos Drive in Montecito begins well before one even sees the house. I visited on a recent bright, sunny afternoon and entered through impressive iron gates. My head swiveled right and left and right again as my attention was drawn to the variety of cacti and palms lining the curving drive. It was apparent that I was approaching something special. I parked and walked up a short flight of Santa Barbara stone steps flanked on each side by palm-tree sentries and colorful plants. The stairs provide just enough elevation to keep the house hidden from view until one reaches the top of the steps, resulting in a dramatic reveal. A swath of lawn split up the middle by a freeform flagstone path leads toward a long, low façade composed of a series of archways running the length of the house. Each arch is framed by blooming bougainvillea that seem to both protect and soften the house at the same time, like a decorative magenta armor. The dreamy landscape continues throughout and all around this home, but it certainly doesn’t upstage the interior. As I stepped through the heavy double front doors, the dramatic foyer stopped me in my tracks. A coffered ceiling painted with gold leaf surrounding an ornate black filigree light fixture dazzled me before I even got all the way inside. The vivid Mediterranean flair continues into the living room with a wood-beamed ceiling and a true indoor-out-
door feel. French doors frame a fountain in the front yard, and a fireplace is built into the far wall. Back through the entryway lies a formal dining room and the kitchen beyond, separated by a massive twosided fireplace that can be enjoyed in either space. More sets of French doors bring the outside in, opening from the dining room onto the front yard and also out the side to the pool. The pool area is at once formal and intimate, large enough for big parties and entertaining but with separate spaces for seating, dining, and play. The pool itself features sparse lines and an inset fountain at the far end with a Grecian flair. The lush gardens and curved archways soften the ambience and lend a cozy air. Back inside, the kitchen demands attention, with gleaming white-on-white features and a glorious view of the pool area. Gourmet appliances and floating open shelves vie for attention with a huge marble island that doubles as a seating area. A colorfully tiled staircase leads up to the master suite, a romantic haven that occupies the entire top floor. A spacious bedroom, walk-in closet, cozy meditation room, and lovely bathroom are outdone only by a spacious, private deck that overlooks the pool and enjoys views all the way to the ocean and islands. Back downstairs are two more bedroom suites, both with baths and walk-in closets. Varied geometric black-and-white tile in each of the bathrooms, plus artfully placed windows and stunning fixtures, carry the dramatic tone throughout. Separate from the main house is a library or game room with a full bath that could be

reconfigured into an additional master suite or studio, leaving options for a new owner. Just when I thought I had seen it all, I discovered what might be my favorite part of this house, and it isn’t in the house at all. Down a path and up a few steps, there’s a secret rear garden nestled among oak trees. A ring of natural stones hides a built-in gas fire pit with plenty of space to gather. A hot tub hides nearby, surrounded by ferns, cacti, and other native plants. By day, this area would be the perfect backdrop for kids to play. After sunset, the hot tub and the fire pit provide multiple options and equally alluring spots for relaxation. Don’t make me decide whether the interior outshines the outside, or vice versa. This magical Mediterranean home is equally enticing both inside and out.

Youth and Family Services Holds Reaching for the Stars

nly a truly exceptional organization — Youth and
Family Services (YFS) — could motivate a dozen of the area’s top chefs to come together to put on an exquisite five-course meal paired with wine from area wineries. On April 26, a sold-out crowd of 160 supporters gathered at the Santa Barbara Woman’s Club to indulge in this meal and raise funds for YFS’s critical services for homeless and at-risk youth. At this 19th annual event, chefs and wineries donated their time, food, and wine, enabling YFS to net at least $60,000. Guests mingled on the scenic patio while enjoying wine and hors d’oeuvres and visiting with adorable, docile alpacas from Canzelle Alpaca Farm in Carpinteria, the subject of one of the raffle prizes. Upon being seated in the tastefully decorated dining room, guests were welcomed by Board Chair Yonie Harris and entertained with a songand-dance performance by the talented Outburst from La Colina Junior High. Keynote speaker Avanti Alias, a former foster youth who has spent several years in YFS programs, living at Noah’s Anchorage Youth Crisis Shelter and then participating in the My Home program, explained how My Home assists transitional-age youth with housing and case management. She shared how, coming from a family torn apart by domestic violence and then being placed in the foster-care system, she struggled in many ways. She praised the My Home program staff for its “unparalleled love and supportive compassion,” which were crucial to her success. Alias pointed

to unrelenting case-management practices that kept her motivation strong and enabled her to recently complete an MBA program at Antioch University. In expressing her gratitude to the My Home staff, she closed by saying that “the most important lasting investment one can make is in one another.” A standing ovation followed. Chef Vincent Vanhecke, who has been leading the event’s chef team for 14 years, related how he and his fellow chefs really enjoy this evening where they can cook at the highest level, an opportunity he noted has become rarer and rarer. He shared how he supports YFS to let the youth served know that the community cares about them. Among the Star Chefs were Greg Murphy (Bouchon), Eric Widmer (La Cumbre Country Club), and Mossin Sugich (S.B. Yacht Club). Formed in 2001, YFS is the independently managed and funded social-services branch of the Channel Islands YMCA. It operates four core programs that serve homeless and at-risk youth and young adults. Noah’s Anchorage Youth Crisis Shelter is a licensed residential group home for children 10-17 years old, which also provides outreach to youth and young adults and counseling to families. Last year, it served 170 youth and provided counseling services to 153 families. Youth are referred to the shelter from the foster-care system, the probation system, law enforcement, schools, families, and the youth themselves. Founded in 2011, My Home provides housing and support services for youth ages 17-26, many coming out of the

foster-care system. It is a collaboration with the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara and County Child Welfare Services, with YFS providing case management. Currently, there are 15 youth housed and 17 on the waitlist, but those waitlisted still receive case-management services, which are comprehensive and, as Alias attested, highly successful. The statistics are impressive: For the most recent quarter reported (December 2017), 86 percent of those housed were employed and 93 percent were enrolled in an educational program. YFS’s Support and Outreach Services assists homeless teens and those at risk of losing their housing with a plethora of services at its Drop-In Center and through mobile outreach. Last year, 120 youth received services. Its St. George Youth Center provides educational, recreational, cultural, and leadership opportunities in an after-school program for teens in Isla Vista and Goleta. Last year, more than 700 students participated. Our community is so fortunate to have all of these programs.

t’s an age-old question: Why hire an architect? To begin answering it is to recognize that an architect does much more than just help you construct a building. There are numerous talented architects in the community—each with their own perspective on design aesthetic and style. Do you want a modern-looking house, a Spanish Colonial Revival house, a French Normandy house, a Prairie house, or a more eclectic design? There is an architect out there for everyone’s tastes. But why hire an architect, you ask? A licensed architect is specifically trained and rigorously tested on all aspects of what it takes to design a building and apply the various building-code requirements for the structure to be permitted by city building departments. They apply environmental factors to the design that improve the use of energy and assess natural forces to increase the livability of the building. They take into account the diverse needs of the occupants, whether for an office or a residential project. In the design of a house, they have to consider some of the most intimate of requirements—where to store your knickers, for example. Why to not locate the TV/media room next to the sleeping rooms is another example. Which spaces are part of the “public zone,” and which are not? How will one approach the building from the street? How should you configure the outdoor spaces? What must be done to ensure that the building is weathertight and can withstand the natural forces of wind, earth movement, and other external forces? An architect will take into account that buildings are moving all the time—expanding and contracting with the temperature. An architect will know intuitively the common spacing of framing elements and where to place shear walls that will absorb the forces of wind or earth movement. The architect has to be aware of all of these factors and aware that they vary greatly depending upon the site where the building is to be constructed. These major issues are all part of why engaging a licensed architect on your project is a must. While the California Building Code will allow you as an unlicensed individual to design your own house, doing so can prove to be to your peril if you don’t understand the codes and local laws that govern your project. Ignoring these codes and laws can lead not only to costly mistakes but also to structural failures for which a person without an architecture license cannot cover the liability. Architects are also ringmasters to a cadre of specialists, from landscape architects to structural and mechanical/plumbing engineers to other technical consultants. Architects know when to engage these resources and how to coordinate their efforts with their own to ensure the integration of all the building systems. As consumers, we look for the Good Housekeeping Seal of approval, and we should do the same when we build. You want to know that your doctor is accredited and that he or she stays current with his or her field. You want to know that the half gallon of milk you just bought has not expired. And so it is with architects who are members of the American Institute of Architects, or AIA. AIA membership is Good Housekeeping Seal of the architectural profession; it can give you confidence that your architect is being held to an ethical standard. Knowing that your architect is required to stay current with technology, codes, and area requirements in daily practice will give you the confidence you require that the outcome of the design will both meet your expectations and satisfy the highest standards. As well-meaning as unlicensed drafters and licensed architects are, if you insist on the Good Housekeeping Seal of the AIA, your project is much more likely to turn out just as you dreamt of it — perfect!

You’ve heard this a thousand times, and there’s a reason for that. Don’t say, “I’ve tried, and I just cannot do it.” Guess what? (2) Doing more than one thing at once Please just stop this! Focusing on two, or more, things is impossible. No one does a good job of it. I’m not talking about using the time sitting in an overcrowded doctor’s waiting room to go through the photos on your phone. I’m talking about a phone call while emailing while planning dinner for the evening. Ask yourself this: Would I rather give 50 percent and spend twice as long on both tasks or give 100 percent and spend less time focusing on just one task?
(3) Thinking you’ll remember [whatever] without writing it down

There are all kinds of studies proving writing something down will enhance the chances of remembering it. Plus, when you write something down, it’s the same as getting a start on it. I call this brain dumping. Before you leave the office or before you head to bed, write down the top 5-10 things to focus on for tomorrow. Keep it simple—pen and paper or your phone will do the trick. When the brain holds in all the minutiae, it can’t focus on the higher-priority items.
(4) Doing everything yourself If holding in minutiae stiffens your brain, imagine all the starts and stops it experiences because you insist on doing everything when you aren’t the best person for the job. Do you continue doing something simply because you always have done it or think nobody else can do it as well as you? By delegating or farming it out, you free up yourself to do more of what you love and spend your time more wisely. Are you not sure what it is that you could let go? Try this: For a week, don’t do the tasks and see what else you find to do. I promise you will not be sitting around, as tasks always fill the space they are given.

laza de la Guerra, in the first block of East De la Guerra Street, has been a focal point of the city’s social life since the 1820s. During the Spanish and Mexican eras, the plaza was often the scene of dances, fiestas, and bullfights. Just to the north of the plaza, across De la Guerra Street, stands the former home of José de la Guerra y Noriega, perhaps Santa Barbara’s most prominent citizen during its early history. In 1855, the city’s common council designated the plaza, along with Plaza Alameda and Plaza Vera Cruz, as a public square or park—the first official parks in Santa Barbara. There the matter rested for the next 20 years, as the plaza remained simply an open area. In 1875, a new City Hall arose in the middle of the plaza. Initially, the two-story brick building housed all city offices, the jail, the firehouse, and the municipal court. Construction of the City Hall sparked more development around the plaza. Frenchman Louis Raffour opened the Raffour House at the northeast corner of the plaza in the late 1870s. José Borderre, a Basque sheepherder, opened his French Hotel in the southeast corner of the plaza in the 1890s. These and other businesses maintained the plaza’s position at the center of city life. In 1910, the City Hall received a facelift with a new red metal roof and cement facade in the popular Mission Revival architectural style. By the early 1920s, it was apparent that the creation of new city departments and expanding government services dictated new quarters. The city already rented office space around town to accommodate its growing bureaucracy. Voters passed a $200,000 bond issue in 1922. Most of the funds were to go toward construction of a new City Hall at the site of the old Raffour House. Ronald Sauter and E. Keith Lockard rendered the new facility in the Spanish Colonial style, in keeping with El Paseo and its “Street in Spain” across De la Guerra Street. The move to give Santa Barbara a unified architectural look based upon the Spanish Colonial Revival style was in full swing before the 1925 earthquake, which accelerated this trend. The new City Hall included not only city offices, but the police department and the city jail. The old City Hall in the middle of the plaza was razed, and the plaza landscaped with lawn and flowers. Anchoring the plaza on the south side was the Santa Barbara News-Press building, designed by George Washington Smith and completed in 1922. At the time of construction, the building housed the Santa Barbara Daily News. In the 1930s, Thomas Storke would buy the rival Morning Press to form the News-Press. In 1951, the tower and the east wing were added to the building. Shortly after the turn of the 21st century, controversy began to stir when plans were broached to ban autos from the plaza and transform it into a strictly pedestrian area. A number of businesses protested the proposed changes, and the plans were eventually shelved. The plaza continues to play host to a number of festivities during the year, including the Fiesta Mercado and Cinco de Mayo celebration, to name just two. Taken all together, Plaza de la Guerra, Casa de la Guerra, and El Paseo form a wonderfully evocative complex that is still, in many ways, the heart and soul of the city.
