he birds in my backyard have been very vocal lately. A pair of little black-headed wrens have taken to chirping at me anytime I’m outside: doing my laundry, puttering in the garden, or just sitting in the sunshine reading a book. There’s a big stand of bamboo just outside my back door, and although I haven’t seen an actual nest, I think that’s where they’ve chosen to make one. They’re keeping an eye on me, and I’m keeping an eye on them, hoping that soon there will be baby birds to add to the chorus of cheeps and chirps. When I went open-house viewing last Sunday, I didn’t expect to see much more wildlife activity than my birds’ antics of late. However, I wasn’t anticipating the flora and fauna of 2415 Stanwood Drive. I drove past the Mission and on to Mountain Drive, past the Sheffield Reservoir, and then up Mission Ridge to Stanwood. This neighborhood between Skofield Park and Parma Park, called Cielito, is only five minutes from State Street but feels worlds away. Oak trees and boulders line the hills, and houses are far apart, set back from the street. The house at 2415 Stanwood is a serene, Balinese-style sanctuary. One step into the foyer, and I had my first “wow” moment. The front door opens into a dramatic dining room with 24-foot ceilings accented by a unique set of steel crossbeams that are at once modern and rustic, somehow reminiscent of both a covered wooden bridge and a skyscraper. Skylights and windows illuminate the beauty

and craftsmanship of this room, while a stone half wall defines the space and adds a natural contrast. Hanging above is an ornate iron light fixture that fits the space perfectly. Through plentiful windows and a set of French doors, my gaze was drawn outside, to an expansive patio with a softly rippling fountain and lush greenery all around. The house sits on more than an acre of oak forest, with winding paths and steps leading to different levels and seating areas. I’m a sucker for a tree house, and in the far reaches of this yard, over a bridge that crosses a stream, sits a round wooden tree house begging to be explored. I admired it from the back patio but decided to tour the rest of the house before going outside. The kitchen, one bedroom, and garage are to the left of the entryway, while the living room and master suite are to the right, and two en suite bedrooms are upstairs. The kitchen is huge. Sleek counters, a muted color palette, and gourmet appliances are a treat to the eyes and promise a delightful milieu in which to cook, where the food and the camaraderie will be the focus. My peek into the cupboards revealed not one but two well-laidout pantries. I’m sure there were plenty of other delights to discover had I had the time to linger. Zipping upstairs, both bedrooms were well-appointed, and the bathrooms featured surprises like slate floors and custom teak vanities. My favorite part of the second floor is the landing at the top of the staircase. Open to the dining room below, it provides another view of the dramatic entryway and ceiling and is large enough to be a small office or sitting room itself. Back downstairs, I headed toward the other wing. The living room is sunken one step, which gives it a cozy sense of separation from the rest of the first floor. It has 11-foot beamed ceilings and a gorgeous stone fireplace with a wooden mantel that stretches across the room. The lighting in this room, and the entire house, is subtle and perfect. When I commented about the ambience, I learned that all of the systems in the house — the lighting, heat, a/c, and even the sound

system—are state of the art, allowing them to be adjusted precisely. Down a short hallway, I encountered an amazing master suite: even higher ceilings than the living room, another cozy fireplace, and a two-sided walk-in closet bigger than my whole bedroom, with built-ins galore. The master bathroom was the pièce de résistance. A double-head shower and double sink go almost unnoticed because the tall soaking tub with a view out to the garden steals the show. As I looked outside, I stopped frozen in my tracks. A huge deer stood not 10 feet away, staring straight at me. We eyed each other for what felt like minutes before he scampered away, proving he wasn’t just a statue and leaving me staring, dumbfounded, in his wake. I reported my amazing sighting to my friend Jessie, who was holding the open house. She shared my amazement and remarked, “That sure doesn’t happen often in Santa Barbara.” It was certainly a first for me. I drove back down the hill stunned and delighted by what I had seen both inside and outside of this incredible Balinese sanctuary on Stanwood.

American Heart Association Holds Heart Ball

n April 28, about 240 supporters of the American Heart Association (AHA) gathered at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort (formerly Fess Parker) for the annual Heart Ball, which netted about $75,000 for the AHA’s research, advocacy, and patient support programs. Guests mingled in the Grand Ballroom and Grand Foyer before being seated and welcomed by Event Chair Sarah Jaimes. She emphasized the importance of AHA’s work given that heart disease is still the number-one cause of death for Americans and stroke is the number-three cause in Santa Barbara County. Montecito Bank & Trust Chair and CEO Janet Garufis expressed her deep gratitude to the AHA for its work and then introduced the event honoree, Renee Grubb. Garufis praised her dear friend, a business leader who cofounded Village Properties and a dedicated community leader. Garufis shared how Grubb’s passion for excellence carries over from her business life to her community service. Grubb cofounded the award-winning Teacher’s Fund to fund classroom supplies, was president of the S.B. Association of Realtors, chaired the Chamber of the S.B. Region, and is the newly elected board chair of AHA Central Coast. Garufis thanked Grubb for being one of the most extraordinary people she has ever known. Grubb graciously accepted the honor, shared how she has loved being part of the AHA for the past 20 years, and praised all the staff and physicians who work with the organization. The keynote speaker, 18-year-old Gracie Doran, suffered a stroke at age 10 that left her unable to walk, talk, or eat. After 14 surgeries, she shared how she is still partially paralyzed but considers herself one of the lucky ones. Relating her love for dance and how dance helped heal her body and soul, she explained how she founded a dance class for

children with disabilities. She is also a proud spokesperson for the AHA, seeking to raise awareness about pediatric stroke. In a heartfelt appeal before the ask, she urged guests to donate to ensure that there can be many more lucky survivors like her. Tristen, a precious survivor who spoke at last year’s Heart Ball and wanted to come back this year, delighted the audience once again with his story of survival. Tristen suffers from hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which left him with half a heart and necessitated four surgeries. Despite his ordeal, Tristan described himself as an otherwise normal 11-year-old who enjoys a life that is full of fun and adventures. He enthusiastically assisted Jaimes with the ask. According to Board President Dr. Michael Shenoda, in the past decade, there has been a 29 percent decline in the rate of death due to heart disease because of advancements in medical therapy and changes in known heart-disease risk factors. The AHA, according to Shenoda, has been at the forefront of this research and in heart-health public education programs. An emergency three-hour surgery prevented Shenoda from speaking at the event, but this very dedicated physician and president did a quick wardrobe change and slipped into the event to greet supporters before they adjourned. The American Heart Association has 156 local offices, a staff of more than 3,000, and more than 22 million volunteers and supporters. In addition to its research and education programs, it advocates for stronger public-health policies and provides science-based treatment guidelines to health-care professionals. It has invested more than $4 billion in research, more than any organization outside the federal government. The Central Coast office organizes many fundraising events, including Heart Walks in San Luis Obispo (S.L.O.),

Santa Maria, and Santa Barbara; the Santa Barbara Heart Ball; and Go Red for Women Luncheons in Paso Robles, S.L.O., Santa Barbara, and Santa Maria. The Santa Barbara Heart Walk will be on September 29, 2018; the luncheon is in February. The office educates the community through myriad programs, including hands-only CPR training at area high schools, provision of AHA materials to area health-care providers, workplace seminars, and health fair participation. It also facilitates other AHA programs.

Endeman surrounds himself with the tools of his trade—welders, cutters, grinders, files, and all the attendant safety gear. As a welder and business partner at Elephant Iron, Endeman’s work runs the gamut from bidding and designing to fabricating and installing. At the core of it, though, he’s an artist. Endeman grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley, a creative kid who took a year of art classes at Allan Hancock College on scholarship before joining the U.S. Navy. After a year in Italy, he transferred to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where he took up welding and spent three years repairing warships. Back home in Santa Ynez, he found a lot of welding work on agricultural operations and developed a hydraulic dump trailer for farmers and ranchers. “I still see some of those around town,” Endeman said matterof-factly, with a hint of pride. Endeman joined Elephant Iron about 25 years ago. Back then, the business was simply called Peter Grimm Welding and as told to Keith Hamm headquartered in the back of Grimm’s beatup Volvo wagon. Grimm, who also grew up in Santa Barbara, found his knack for welding at Santa Barbara City College, where he took night classes while working days at the Santa Barbara Zoo, training and tending to elephants, sea lions, and parrots, among other attractions. Soon enough, the zoo started hiring Grimm for his welding skills, and his career slowly shifted from zookeeper to full-time welder, around 1985. “The elephants were my weld inspectors,” Grimm remembered with a laugh. Among other memorable projects, Grimm built the zoo’s first lion cage. (Turns out, Endeman has also built a lion cage, at Neverland Ranch, where he also created a steep walkway and platform from which Michael Jackson could stroke a pet giraffe.) Grimm changed the name to Elephant Iron about 15 years ago, honoring his old four-ton friends. These days, Endeman and Grimm are partners, Grimm heading up the paperwork department while Endeman shines in his creative element of conceptualizing, drawing, and fabricating high-end ironwork. “We certainly aren’t the cheapest shop in town,” Endeman says. “But we do the nicest work.” As for their longstanding collaborations with Giffin & Crane, Grimm takes comfort in the fact that he and Endeman have confidence in the building team, and vice versa. “We all know that each person is always moving toward solutions,” Grimm said.
