Tree House at the Top of the Riviera

W

hat was your fantasy home when you were a kid? A fancy mansion with columns out front and a circular drive? Maybe a farmhouse with a barn and plenty of land? My dream home, possibly born of the Swiss Family Robinson attraction at Disneyland, was always a tree house. The draw was something about being far above it all, surrounded by greenery and secluded, yet still able to look down and see everyone going about their business far below. I found my fantasy tree house last week when I visited the home for sale at 1553 Oramas Road in Santa Barbara. One little finger of Oramas juts off of California Street to end in a cul-de-sac of just a few houses. From the street, a flagstone walkway leads past a carport to a wide wooden staircase that zigzags through oaks and other greenery down toward the house. Landings along the way provide multiple vantage points and create a dramatic approach to the house itself. The cedar-shingled exterior blends into its idyllic setting, and custom banisters lead to a hand-carved wooden front door. Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows frame an amazing view, drawing all eyes out over the treetops to the city and all the way to the ocean and the islands beyond. The oak forest around and below the house provides complete privacy, creating an atmosphere of intimacy and seclusion. While ogling the vista, I realized that the front door leads into the top floor of the house, with a second level down a staircase, mimicking the terrain of the hillside itself. The entry opens into a kitchen/dining room combo, separated by a long tiled breakfast bar. The dining room has a fireplace along the far wall, with a Saltillo tile hearth. Soaring cathedral ceilings throughout the upstairs, hewn from wide wooden planks, bring the outside in. The

roofline extends out over the dining room, creating a spacious loft feeling, and showcases a separate “tower” room on the left side of the house. My curiosity was piqued by the hexagonal tower space, but I decided to explore the rest of the house first and save this unique architectural element for last. The master bedroom suite occupies the other side of this top floor, with a laundry room, master bath, and large closet. Running the length of the bedroom is a private balcony, begging to be used for morning coffee or a glass of wine while watching the sunset. This deck also offers a clear view of the tower. Its two-story frame is bolstered from below by a steel ladder framework that’s a marvel of both engineering and artistry, and it appears to almost float next to the rest of the house. I was now even more curious to see inside the tower; however, I stuck to my plan and headed downstairs first. On the right side of the lower level, two bedrooms share a bathroom and enjoy sliding doors out onto a huge deck that spans the entire floor. Whether these rooms are used for guests or family, I imagine a lot of time spent with these doors wide open, enjoying the natural beauty all around. The living room occupies the left side of the lower level. A spacious but cozy space, it has another fireplace and also enjoys a huge wall of windows. Struck once again by the view, I almost missed one of the subtle surprises of the house. Tucked into what appears to be a hallway closet lies a full wet bar, complete with a Dutch door that transforms into a serving surface with the flick of a wrist.

I was delighted by this fun surprise but still eager to see the tower. The lower level of the tower is outfitted with a Murphy bed and built-in shelves, plus windows all around. Upstairs, the tower room is easily my most favorite spot in the house. The same unique shape and panoramic view are complemented by a wood-paneled cathedral ceiling with a dozen beams spiraling from the center. Two additional small floral-paned decorative windows are reminiscent of portholes. It was then that I realized that as much as this home feels like a tree house, it also reminded me of a ship. Cantilevered out over the mountainside, it is a sanctuary above the fray. Whether from the deck of a ship or the seclusion of a tree house, the new owners of 1553 Oramas Road can survey the scene below from the serenity of their perch in their perfect dream home.

Arts & Lectures Hosts Gala with Anthony Bourdain Singh of BiBi Ji (which got the highest bid, $24,000), and Greg Murphy of bouchon. Craig McCaw added an impromptu offering at Oliver’s. Bourdain, best known for his book Kitchen Confidential and his Emmy Award–winning television show Parts Unknown, enlightened and entertained the guests with an unfiltered outpouring of “painfully acquired nuggets of wisdom” that he maintained “will allow you to reach your finest you.” First up was “Follow your dream, unless you suck.” He quickly cautioned, however, not to open a restaurant. Show up on time, he advised, because lack of punctuality shows so much about character. Embrace curiosity. Being generally interested in what goes on outside one’s own bubble is a major asset. Be gracious, especially when you travel. He opined that people open up to him because he asks simple questions about their lives and more important, because he eats whatever is offered to him. Food may represent an ethnicity, a region, or a country, and asking for a spinach salad instead of the local fare is going to end the conversation. In business, he lives by the “No Asshole Rule,” by which no matter how good the offer is, he always asks, Do I want to do business with this person? A lively Q&A followed, and then a more intimate reception for VIP guests. UCSB Arts & Lectures annually presents more than 100 events, including concerts, dance performances, talks by authors, and film series at UCSB and Santa Barbara–area venues. Ticket sales and institutional support cover less than half its costs, necessitating major fundraising. Its extensive outreach program serves K-12 students, college students and the general public. This season included educational opportunities with former vice president Joe Biden, former U.S. secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, novelist Zadie Smith, comic Mike Birbiglia, public radio producer Ira Glass, astronaut Terry Virts, Grammy Award–winning La Santa Cecilia, Spain’s Compañía Nacional de Danza, and many more.

n May 9, about 300 supporters of UCSB Arts & Lectures (A&L) enjoyed a swanky affair featuring food personality, author, and raconteur Anthony Bourdain on the scenic grounds of the S.B Historical Museum. The event’s theme was celebrating Santa Barbara, but its purpose was raising funds for A&L programming and educational outreach programs. With tickets starting at $1,000 and lots of pricey sponsorships, the event enabled A&L to recover from the hole caused by the twin disasters, which impacted both donations and ticket sales, and to set aside funding for educational outreach programs. The evening began in the lower courtyard with scrumptious hors d’oeuvres by Les Marchands Chef Weston Richards, Loquita Executive Chef Peter Lee, and Michael’s Catering Chef Michael Hutchings, with the latter preparing succulent sautéed abalone. Guests then were seated in the main courtyard, where Miller McCune Executive Director Celesta M. Billeci welcomed them and thanked lead sponsors Lynda Weinman, Bruce Heavin, and Sara Miller McCune. Sherry Villanueva, the visionary behind the event, explained how area food and wine purveyors came together to showcase what is special about Santa Barbara and show how the food and wine scene here matches the arts and culture that A&L brings to us. Guests dined on slow-cooked California lamb ribs or roasted West Coast sea bass prepared by The Lark Executive Chef Jason Paluska. More than 25 area food and beverage purveyors were featured in the evening. In a short video, Billeci explained how a critical component of A&L is providing educational outreach opportunities. She related how the need for this is greater now than ever because university and K-12 school budgets have been significantly decreased, resulting in program cuts for the arts. Funds raised during the ask will go to A&L’s educational outreach programs. The auction, led by Dan Burnham and Eric Sonquist, featured tantalizing private dinners by some of the area’s top chefs: Paluska, Justin West of Wildwood Kitchen, Johan Denizot of Belmond El Encanto, Gary

Save That Rain!

ainwater in our area is mostly sent to storm drains and channeled into the ocean. There are, however, other alternatives to this water-wasting, polluting system of handling storm runoff. Two that I like are rain gardens and infiltrators. A relatively new concept in landscape design, the rain garden is a two- to three-foot depression, often 300-500 square feet in surface area, that gets filled with permeable materials and capped with deep-rooted native plants. Plant selection is crucial. They need to be able to withstand extremes of moisture (flooding and drought) as well as concentrations of sediment and nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, common elements found in storm-water runoff. Good choices are plants from the edge of wetlands such as wildflowers, grasses, sedges, rushes, ferns, shrubs, and small trees. Those with deep fibrous roots tend to have a competitive advantage and provide the most cleaning and filtration benefits to the environment. Rain gardens not only enhance infiltration but also, below ground, maintain or even augment soil permeability, provide moisture redistribution and aquifer recharge, and sustain diverse microbial populations involved in biofiltration. Above ground they add pleasing aesthetics, encourage wildlife and biodiversity, contribute to localized flood control, and reduce the need for irrigation. The combination of the plants and porous planting media often reduces the amount of storm water and pollution reaching creeks, streams, and the ocean by 30 percent or more. The cost of creating a rain garden is small. The ensemble of benefits has led cities and regions across the country to adopt by Dennis Allen policies encouraging rain gardens. Another option is the infiltrator chamber that can be configured to create an underground reservoir. Made of high-density polyethylene, often from recycled material, these arches, basically in the shape of an inverted U, are most often three feet across at the base and five feet in length. They interlock to form continuous drainage tunnels. It is advisable to place them on a gravel bed to aid percolation. Frequently, they run 50 feet in length with the capacity to handle large “surge” volumes of storm water and store it until it seeps into the ground beneath. Commonly buried about two feet deep, their ribbed configuration makes them structurally strong enough to take heavy loads like vehicular traffic. Although not inexpensive to install, infiltrators cost less than permeable paving or drywells while accommodating much larger quantities of storm water. All strategies that retain and percolate storm water into the ground need to pay attention to the permeability of the soil. Infiltrators are often less costly than vegetated roofs or rainwater-collection systems, which are also strategies that keep storm water on-site.

You’re feverishly scouring through the freezer to find something to cook, the kids are running around, your partner isn’t home yet, and you are thinking about that last email that your boss sent you that you didn’t have a chance to get to before you left the office. Worse still, once your partner walks through the door, a benign question like, “Did you deposit that check I left on the desk this morning?” turns into a full-blown argument about family finances, and you’re suddenly considering canceling your family vacation to Hawai‘i. Sound familiar? As a productivity coach, I frequently work with individuals and teams on meetings — specifically how to make them more efficient, effective, and worthy of everyone’s time. Now, while there’s a lot of literature dedicated to this topic by top business gurus, there’s one kind of meeting that gets constantly ignored, but really shouldn’t. And what meeting is that? You guessed it: It’s the one for individuals who have a family partner — the by Sara Caputo husband/wife/significant other — that you should meet with each week. The reality is that when you have a household, kids, pets, social life, and other outsideof-work responsibilities, you are in fact running a small business. And your husband/ wife/partner is your business partner. My husband and I meet every Sunday evening when the kids are in bed to touch base and get grounded so we can get on the same page at the same time and help our “business” run a bit smoother throughout the week. The relationship you have with your partner is what grounds you and is a platform for you to be your best self in your work and life. Here are some of the ways that my husband and I have found to make sure our meetings are really helping to support us:

SIMPLY 805

(1) Create a sacred, scheduled time to meet every week. Set up a weekly meeting with your partner to discuss kids, projects, schedules (work and social), hot issues that require focused discussion time, and other odds and ends that are sure to arise throughout the week. This is the time that allows you and your partner to have a State of the Union meeting. Do this when the house is calm (read: NO KIDS). You should both view it as the most important meeting of the week. Block it off on both calendars. (2) Keep track of your finances and have a weekly (or monthly) financial meeting. No small business

should go very long without taking a look at its finances and keeping its finger on the pulse, right? Even if one of you is the primary bill payer, the other should have full access and knowledge of where your finances stand. This allows for an educated discussion.

(3) Plan your menu. One of the biggest points of frustration for everyone (especially the

main chef) in the house can be dinnertime — see scenario above. Planning out what to feed your family at 5 p.m. is not only frustrating, but leads to poor nutritional choices. Take 15 minutes before your week begins and think through the week.

(4) Create routines and stick to them. It’s so easy to give in to the TV or skip the bath when

the evening becomes chaotic. Kids thrive on and need routine for their own sense of balance — and honestly, so do you! I suggest writing down your routine and posting it where everyone can see it so there are no gaps or questions about what comes next. Spontaneity is great and can be reserved for the weekends or vacations, but during the hectic workweek when timing and schedules are tight, a well-kept routine is often the most efficient practice for everyone in your house.
