Exquisite Victorian on the Upper Eastside

W

hen I was a little girl, my friend Leslie had an amazing dollhouse. Playtime at Leslie’s house almost always started and ended with the dollhouse. It was a three-story, Victorianstyle mansion, elaborately decorated and furnished. We spent hours making up detailed scripts and scenes for our dolls, using the dollhouse as the backdrop for our glamorous productions. Walking through the gate and up the steps of the exquisite home at 1600 Olive Street, I felt as if I were gazing up at the real-life version of Leslie’s dollhouse. The exterior of this Queen Anne Victorian is a classic blend of scalloped gingerbread detailing plus horizontal and vertical wood siding, in a palette of baby blue highlighted by brighter blue and white trim. On the day that I visited, it rivaled the summer sky for spotlight status. Built in 1890, this five-bedroom, five-bath home has been designated a historical structure of merit and holds court over the corner of Olive and Arrellaga streets on the upper east side of town. At the top of the stairs, a covered front porch runs the length of the house. The porch provides both an al fresco sitting room on the right-hand side and a spacious outdoor foyer on the left. The foyer leads to a walkway that winds down to a secluded lower front patio with a large, private hot tub. I was soon to learn that this area is one of several distinct outdoor rooms around the home, providing plenty of options for enjoying Santa Barbara’s weather year-round. I stepped through the red front door, and that’s when the dollhouse feeling really hit me. The interior is absolutely stunning. A gleaming staircase lies straight ahead, leading upstairs with three formal, 90-degree turns. Leslie’s dolls would have performed a grand entrance walking down the staircase to meet their handsome dates, but in real life the staircase provided me with a perfect vantage point from which to better admire the designer details of the first floor. Gleaming dark hardwood floors reflect the sparkle of chandeliers and gold-leaf detailing. Ceilings are swagged in fabric, and original crown moldings have been preserved and accented, lending an even more dramatic air. The formal living and dining rooms share a two-sided corner fireplace and are connected by sliding pocket doors framed by original detailed wood trim.

Beyond the dining room lies an immaculate kitchen outfitted almost completely in white, with marble countertops and stainless-steel appliances. To the right side of the kitchen lies a black-and-white-tiled outdoor dining room, with built-in banquette seating and circus-striped awnings. On the other side of the kitchen is a lush covered patio with statuary and a more enclosed feel. Both take advantage of the lovely grounds and lofty setting high above the street. Back inside, I ooh-ed and aah-ed my way through the rest of the first floor. After admiring an office with bay windows, a bedroom with full bath, and a separate powder room, I decided I had earned the right to climb the grand staircase. Upstairs, a central hallway opens onto three en suite bedrooms: one on either side of the house, plus a spectacular master bedroom up front. The spacious master suite offers ocean views, a large walk-in closet and bathroom, and my very favorite part of the house: an enclosed sunroom. Accessed by glass-paneled French doors, the sunroom sits front and center over the rest of the house and is surrounded by windows on all sides, promising both sunrise and sunset views. I’m told that the current owners enjoy this room as a meditation space, and after spending just a few minutes there, I can understand why. I pulled myself away from the view and was about to head back downstairs when I discovered one more door off the hallway. A huge room in the back of the house, currently used as a stylish family room, contains both a back stairway leading downstairs and another smaller staircase leading up. The third story is a finished attic: more than 600 square feet of sunny loft space with a sloping ceiling and ocean views out the window. An adjacent unfinished room could be used for storage or a perfect reading nook. Since my dollhouse memories were looming large, all I could think about was what a dreamy play room the attic would make for kids of any age. I went back downstairs with my head full of ideas, imagining what I would do with each of the spaces in this home. From the fantasy white kitchen to the grand living room to the peaceful sunroom and the secret third-floor hideaway, Leslie and I would have spent untold hours helping our dolls fill this house with imagined stories. In the real world, a lucky new owner will have years to do the same.

n June 3, about 650 supporters of the Environmental Defense Center (EDC) gathered at Rancho La Patera and Stow House in Goleta to celebrate their treasured organization and raise funds for its educational, advocacy, and legal work in the tri-county area. Guests mingled on the scenic grounds while perusing an extensive silent auction before being seated in an open-air tent for the program. Chief Counsel Linda Krop shared some highlights of EDC’s accomplishments over the past 41 years: stopping three proposed liquefied natural gas projects and many oil development Honoree Jane Fonda and Board President Judy Pirkowitsch proposals, ending marine barging off our coast, defeating Phillips 66’s plan to bring mile-long oil trains through our The Environmental Defense Center is a nonprofit communities, and extinguishing 40 federal offshore oil law firm focusing on climate and energy and protecting leases. Krop presented Jane Fonda with EDC’s Environmental Hero Award, calling her “a consistent voice drawing attention to environmental and social injustice.” Fonda worked to protect the Arctic from oil drilling, opposed Staff attorneys Maggie Hall and Alicia Roessler oil tankers, advocated against the Dakota Access pipeline, and has been a loud voice against tar sands development in Canada and the U.S. Closer to home, in the 1980s, Fonda supported EDC’s work to stop the threat of new offshore oil development in our county, including Measure A (1985), which EDC drafted to prevent the proliferation of new oil and gas development along the Gaviota Coast. Also receiving an Environmental Hero Award was filmmaker Gail Osherenko for her documentary, Broke: The Santa Barbara Oil Pipeline Spill of 2015, which premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. In presenting the award, Bailey called Broke a powerful film that should be “required viewing for anyone concerned with disaster preparedness, climate, and community health.” Osherenko played a critical role in the creation of the California Coastal Act and the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area and has served on Environmental Analyst & Watershed Program Coordinator EDC’s board for 15 years. According to Beijing’s transportation commission, pedal power accounted for 63 percent of trips in the 1980s. This figure dropped to less than 18 percent by 2014. Surprisingly, however, bicycle usage is making a resurgence in the form of bike sharing accessed through smartphone apps. Today in Beijing, population 11 million, there are 2.4 million shareable bikes, with half the population being registered users. That’s more than 40 times as many registered users as in New York City’s large Citi Bike program. Bike sharing is a fast-growing global phenomenon, pushed in part by Chinese enthusiasm. The key has been joining technology together with a young, highly educated entrepreneurial class. The boom in China arose primarily from the problem of university students repeatedly having their bicycles stolen. Four years ago, some of those students started thinking that maybe you don’t need to own a bike. Now they are some of the most successful Chinese entrepreneurs. In China, unlike in France, where bike sharing got its start, there are no set docking stations scattered around a city. Just leave the bike when you get to your destination and lock it (by iPhone, of course). Because of GPS tracking software, this parked bike then appears on the phone app of other nearby subscribers looking for a bike. The biggest bike-sharing companies in China, which have rapidly mushroomed into billion-dollar businesses, are spreading to hundreds of cities around the world, including more than a dozen U.S. cities. A big attraction of bike sharing has been the solving of by Dennis Allen the “last-mile” problem: helping people get between public transit centers and home. China’s government has been encouraging the development of the shared economy, using a combination of incentives and minimal regulation. In the bike-sharing arena, this has made possible explosive growth but has also created problems, the biggest being the many broken-down, discarded, and vandalized bikes. Repair efforts have not kept up with the growing heaps of trashed or broken-down shareable bikes. One of the large Chinese companies has developed a bike with a drive shaft rather than chain propulsion, airless rubber tires that can’t be punctured, and a solar-powered, GPS smart lock — all innovations to minimize the need for repairs and to reduce thievery. The growth of bike sharing in Europe and America has taken place in a more regulated environment and thus has been slower and more controlled. Because of convenience, health benefits, and improving infrastructure, biking and bike sharing will continue to expand. The public benefits — reduced carbon emissions, less pollution, less urban land dedicated to asphalt, and stronger community connectivity — are further spurs to the growth of pedal power.

anta Barbara native Rudy Raygoza started working for Pyramid Tile & Marble straight out of high school. Toward the tail end of his 17 years with that company, Raygoza drove to Oxnard three times a week to ITT Technical Institute, where he took night classes in computer-aided drafting and earned undergraduate and advanced degrees in business administration. In early 2017, he responded to a Giffin & Crane employment ad, landing the job in the spring of that year. He hit the ground running and has really been put to the test since the fire and flood of this past winter. We caught up with Raygoza to talk briefly about his work in Montecito’s disaster area.

What’s the range of your responsibilities? My responsibilities have been to assess the damage, strategize with my team to create a game plan, and execute that plan while at the same time being the peras told to Keith Hamm son that clients can count on through this difficult process. Working for many years all over Santa Barbara, I am aware of the immaculate architecture in this town. When I was able to get to the storm-damaged homes in Montecito, my heart sank. The damage was so tremendous that I was truly left speechless.

What challenges have you experienced? At first we were having difficulty finding areas where we could take the mud and dirt. Many [processing yards] were only taking clean dirt, and most of what came down the mountain had lots of debris and boulders in it. We have been sifting the debris from the clean dirt. Another challenge was trying not to haul things away too quickly since the boulders and dirt on the properties could possibly be used for future storm protection.

Have you seen an upside to working in the disaster area? It can be difficult to find anything positive through these hard times. One thing I have noticed, however, is that subcontracting companies are able to put differences aside and work together on the same projects to help out this community. I believe we all understand that we are all in this together.
