hat’s in a name? Quite a lot when it comes to well-known street names. Foothill Road is one of the most recognized routes in our community. It’s also one of the longest thoroughfares, spanning almost all the way from Goleta to Carpinteria. Many drivers use it as an alternate route to avoid the freeway during peak commuting hours, which means that Foothill gets its fair share of traffic, too. But not the little pocket of Foothill that I visited last week. The house for sale at 2606 Foothill Road is actually up a private lane that runs perpendicular to Foothill, just around the bend from Rocky Nook Park and the Old Mission. I was pleasantly surprised by its secluded location and even more delighted with the home itself. A set of white, wooden gates stood wide open, welcoming me to the property. Once inside, I found myself in a large parking court surrounded by a low stone wall, with a gazebo on a hillside to the right, a two-story garage and guesthouse to the left, and the main house itself straight ahead. The word “charming” is overused when talking about houses, but it’s hard to describe this one without using that exact word. Red wood siding is set off by bold white trim, including a fence and balcony. Dormer windows peek up over the front entrance, and
a long covered bridge connects the main house to the guesthouse, leaving a first-time visitor no doubt that that this property is much more of a compound than a house. Built on a hillside, the house has three different levels and multiple paths and staircases connecting them. A red-brick walkway leads past the front lawn and up to the house. The landscaping is an artful blend of succulents and native plants and trees that has both a manicured feel and yet a natural, rambling sense. It’s a front yard that feels loved. As I paused to soak it all in, I realized that the gazebo area to my right looked out over a putting green. This was my first sign that the compound might be a good place to entertain. The front door opens into a multipurpose great room, with striking wood-beamed cathedral ceilings showcased by floor-toceiling decorative support beams. Skylights allow the sunshine to stream in and provide natural spotlights. A huge stone fireplace against the far wall echoes the exterior stonework and helps bring the outside in. A separate dining area splits off from the main living room and flows nicely into the kitchen. As captivating as this great room is, many windows plus no fewer than three sets of doors allow views outside, making it hard not to head straight through to the backyard. Once I stepped foot into the backyard, I knew that no matter what I found inside, the yard would be my favorite part of the whole property. Enormous oak trees provide a parklike feel and add to the sense of seclusion. A wraparound deck encircles the house and allows captivating views plus space for ample dining and lounging. Stairs lead down to a huge open space ideal for entertaining, and walkways meander through the rest of the property. With over half an acre of space to play in and explore, the backyard is reminiscent of the grounds of the Museum of Natural History — no great surprise since it’s just down the road. Back inside, I faced stairs leading both up and down from the great room. Downstairs is a bedroom suite
with a separate entrance, perfect for a teenager who needs a large dose of privacy. Another en suite bedroom is on the main floor; plus there’s an enchanting master suite upstairs, with a bay window on one side and a balcony on the other. There are several ways to walk from the main house to the guesthouse, but I had been anticipating the walk across the bridge since I had first laid eyes on it. The bridge is a unique, romantic touch and provides another vantage point of the lush grounds. The bridge leads to the second-floor guesthouse, which is a studio with a full bathroom and separate sleeping area, plus its own deck. Downstairs is a two-car garage with laundry room and additional storage space. On the other side of the garage is a self-contained artist studio. With cathedral ceilings, a wall of windows, and French doors onto its own patio, the studio is a versatile space with plenty of options. I’m told that the whole property was used as an artists’ retreat in the past, and with the great light and versatile space, it’s easy to imagine. This charming farmhouse offers more than meets the eye and blows away the assumptions one might make with its Foothill Road address. A lucky new buyer just needs to find their way down the meandering lane and through its magical front gates to discover this country farmhouse in the city and make it their own dream home.

South Coast Business & Technology Awards Presented the purchase of Rusty’s Roast Beef in Isla Vista, and over the years, the family created a business empire with 18 locations. Montecito Bank & Trust (MB&T) Chair and CEO Janet Garufis received the Executive of the Year Award. Garufis remarked on how odd it was that MB&T founder Michael Towbes never received the award (though she noted he did receive the Pioneer Award), and her speech was an eloquent testimonial to him. Garufis rose from being a bank teller in Los Angeles to chair and CEO of MB&T. She expressed her gratitude to Towbes for his many years of mentorship and for the extraordinary opportunity to “lead a banking institution whose vision it is to make the communities we serve better places to live and work.” Garufis serves as chair of the Community Depository Institutions Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank’s 12th District. Somehow, she also manages to meaningfully volunteer for a large number of organizations in town, including Sansum Clinic, the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, the Goleta Chamber of Commerce, CALM, the S.B. Symphony, the American Heart Association, and the United Way of S.B. County. The Pioneer Award went to John Bowers, who has been on the UCSB faculty since 1987, where he is a worldleading researcher in silicon photonics, optoelectronics, energy efficiency, and the development of novel lowpower optoelectronic devices. Bowers is the nanotechnology chair and the director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency. He is also a cofounder of the nonprofit Unite to Light, which provides solar lights to students in the developing world to enable them to study longer and avoid the ill effects of kerosene lamps. The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara County is the largest community-based provider of college scholarships in the entire country, having cumulatively awarded in excess of $108 million to more than 50,000 students since 1962. This year, it awarded roughly $8.3 million in scholarships to about 2,700 students throughout the county.

n June 6, more than 600 people converged on the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort for the South Coast Business & Technology Awards, which celebrate leadership and ingenuity while raising funds for the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara. An all-volunteer steering committee selects the honorees. This year, about $150,000 was raised for students pursuing degrees in business and technologyrelated fields. Since 2001, the event has raised more than $2 million for the Scholarship Foundation. During the reception, guests mingled in the Rotunda at what has become known as the premier networking event of the year. In the Grand Ballroom, event cochairs Arnold Brier and Renee Grubb welcomed the guests. A special Local Heroes Award was presented to area first responders for their efforts during the Thomas Fire and 1/9 Debris Flow. In accepting the award, Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni explained how in the wake of the debris flow, first responders performed hundreds of land-based rescues in addition to 131 helicopter rescues, 26 of which were very dangerous hoist operations. Of those 26, 25 were transported to Cottage Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and all survived. He thanked everyone for the staggering outpouring of support. KEYT/KCOY/KKFX was recognized with the Excellence in Service Award for the invaluable, continual stream of information during the twin disasters. In presenting the award, Janet Garufis remarked that through its coverage, KEYT became a frontline responder in its own right. Guy De Mangeon was recognized as the Entrepreneur of the Year. De Mangeon started out in 1988 as a new, nonEnglish-speaking immigrant from France, selling flats of strawberries, and went on to build The Berry Man, Inc., a highly successful wholesale produce distributor with $15 million in annual sales. De Mangeon endeared himself to the audience by sharing anecdotes of his journey, such as how his company name came from the nickname he got from his customers who could not pronounce “Guy.” De Mangeon declared that he is proof that any entrepreneur can succeed in America. The Company of the Year Award went to Rusty’s Pizza Parlors. In 1969, Roger and Carol Duncan started with

veryone finds it interesting to see how others “run” their lives and manage their time and what tools and hacks they use. Every so often I meet people whose lives seem so busy and yet so organized that I am fascinated to learn how they manage their time. This interview is with just such a person: Sarah Sinclair, advertising director at the Santa Barbara Independent. They always say that if you need something done, ask a busy person. Sarah not only runs the advertising team at the Independent but also writes a weekly column in the Indy real estate section, serves on four nonprofit boards, has an active social life, and still manages to get to the beach nearly every day. I first met Sarah years ago when we were working on a similar project. I instantly adored her: She wears gorgeous jewelry, has a smile that lights up the room, and is as positive a person as you’ll find anywhere. Even with her huge role at the Indy, she keeps that smile on her face. I see her at events, in the news, and on social media, and she has numerous responsibilities, so I thought she’d be a great person to run my five Qs by and see what she had to say … So let’s take a peek behind Sarah’s scenes:
(1) How do you define a successful day? A successful day is one

That day may not look the way I thought it was going to when it started out, but at the end of the day, if I know that I have made strides toward the big picture, then I feel good. Also, I run a lot of projects with many moving parts, and knowing where each project stands, while always having fun and connecting to the right people, defines success for me within my day.
(2) What is your #1 time-saving hack? The short answer: making phone calls while I walk to or from work. The longer answer: always working. I know that sounds weird, but I just never turn my work brain off. The lines between my work life and social life have become very blurred in the four and a half years that I’ve been at the Independent. I love what I do so much that I’m always working. But I’m always happy about it.

time with my colleagues: asking them how they’re doing, comparing successes and challenges, sharing more, and learning from one another more.
(5) How do you go to the beach (metaphorically) within your day? I get to the beach literally almost every day. But to achieve that “toes in the sand” feeling when I can’t get to the beach, I go for a walk — our office is right around the corner from the courthouse, so if I’ve got 10 minutes to spare, I’ll go up the tower for the view. It’s the perfect distance for a “walking meeting” with one or two coworkers. If I can’t spare 10 minutes, I look out the window and/or breathe a few deep breaths. (6) Bonus Question: What is your ultimate productivity tool that you cannot live without? My iPhone. I speak into my phone and use that dictation for notes of all sorts. Without this tool, I would waste so much time … this saves me!
