Designer Hideaway in Santa Barbara Foothills T ake Patterson toward the mountains as far as you can go, and you’ll find yourself in a countrified enclave of 10 custom homes, each set on five acres of land. The residences enjoy plenty of privacy, peace, and unobstructed views of the surrounding land and mountains. Some of the homes are situated so that they also have views of the ocean, which feels distant but is really only a few miles away. Such is the case with the home located at 1120 Via del Rey, a stately showplace that’s ready for comfortable living. Driving toward the house, you’ll see a vintage tractor sitting off to the side of the car park area, providing a hint of the rustic undertones waiting to be enjoyed in and around this estate. The house itself sports a classic colonial facade with two stories of gray wood siding with white trim, enhanced by a slender-columned covered front porch. As I walked up the winding, bricklined walkway through a swath of bright green lawn, I noticed that the home’s vertical windows mirror the glass panes inset on either side of the front door. The entryway presents a traditional foyer with a staircase straight ahead; a kitchen and family room combo to the right; a living room, office, dining room, and bedroom/library to the left; and a sunroom through an arched doorway beyond. Before walking in to ogle the kitchen, I peeked behind a door off the foyer and made my first of many audible gasps of delight. While I had expected to find a coat closet or maybe a powder room, behind this door lies an adorable wine room, both functional and fanciful. I was captivated by the wine closet’s stylish tableau, and when I walked in and laid eyes on the kitchen, I realized that the designer touches throughout this home were going to provide plenty to love. I visit a lot of homes, and I’ve gotten pretty adept at seeing beyond the furnishings to the bones of the house itself. This house has great bones, but I have to admit I was so smitten with the decor that I had to reel myself in numerous times and remind myself to focus on the house and not its furnishings.

I could tell you about the collection of white bowls perched fetchingly high up on a kitchen ledge or the perfect blend of mismatched chairs placed around a table, but those treasures — while justifiably eye-catching — are not for sale. The house itself, however, has plenty to remark upon.

Reining in my focus, I found that the kitchen itself is a dream: a Viking stove, white-tiled island with both sink and built-in granite pastry board, pine cabinetry with just-enough-but-not-too-much glass-fronted cabinets, and a huge window over the main kitchen sink framing a perfect mountain view. Another delight off the kitchen is a walk-in pantry that’s been designed to serve as a minioffice with space for cookbooks, coffee serving, and plenty of storage. White beadboard walls and tons of shelving combine versatile efficiency with vintage flair. The kitchen opens to the family room. With rustic cathedral-beamed ceilings, a fireplace on the far wall, dining area in a bay window, and French doors opening to the backyard, this great room promises to contain the heart of the action in this home.

Throughout the rest of the first floor, high ceilings and hardwood floors, plus floor-to-ceiling windows emphasizing the country setting, keep a light, bright ambience. While the current owners built the house with specific uses in mind for each room, the floor plan is versatile and could be adapted in various options. In addition to three more bedrooms, the second floor holds several delightful surprises. The master bedroom has tray ceilings, a walkin closet, and a stunning bathroom. The bathtub is set under a window with ideal mountain views. Even admiring it on a sunny afternoon, it’s easy to imagine bathing by candlelight surrounded by a sky full of stars. The other two bedrooms share a large Jack and Jill bathroom. One room has a doorway out to an unexpected rooftop sun porch, and the other has a cozy office built into an alcove. The office, like the downstairs pantry, makes great use of limited space: It’s almost a tiny house within this large home. The sun porch is my favorite “room” in the house: a long outdoor space that feels like part widow’s walk and part patio. Even with parental approval, the fact that its entrance is through a bedroom makes it feel a bit forbidden. No description of the amazing home at 1120 Via del Rey is complete without extolling its five acres of land. Three acres are planted in Eureka lemons. The current owners have detailed all of the resources they use to manage the orchard, from harvesting, pruning, and landscaping to marketing and business advisors. The property’s water is on an agricultural meter that allows for lower rates and includes an oversized septic tank. Beyond the beauty and utility of the lemon orchard, possibilities for the future are almost limitless. The farmto-table lifestyle could be created and lived to the fullest, including horses, chickens, organic vegetables, and more. PATH Holds Home Tour Fundraiser

O

n June 9, PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) Santa Barbara held its second annual Making It Home Tour, which featured four lovely Santa Barbara residences. The 260 guests were transported by historic trolleys, enjoyed wine and gourmet treats at every stop, and ended the day with a party at the Riviera residence of Jodi and Johnny Goldberg (the creator of the fitness phenomenon spinning). Guests were greeted on board the trolleys by PATH staff members and volunteers. Our guides, including PATH S.B. Program Director Chuck Flacks, gave us an overview of the comprehensive services PATH Santa Barbara provides to move homeless individuals into permanent housing. The Goldbergs participated in the event last year, opening their Montecito residence to guests. After that home was destroyed in the 1/9 Debris Flow, the Goldbergs quickly relocated, decorated, and once again welcomed guests into their home for the tour and closing reception. Jodi Goldberg shared that after the debris flow, they received so much support from the community. “We believe everyone should feel this same sense of security, which is why we are so happy to be a part of this event.” Also on the tour was Simon and Diana Raab’s magnificent villa on Knapp Hill, a nearly 11,000-square-foot home that blends classic and modern design and features some of Simon’s acclaimed artwork. The home is for sale for $16.5 million. Not far away but an entire world apart in style was Soren and Kim Kieler’s Balinese oasis on Hot Springs Road, complete with four thatched cabanas dotting the idyllic, tropical grounds. And Denny and Bitsy Bacon’s lovely Mission Canyon abode evoked plenty of gasps with its jaw-dropping mountain views. PATH Santa Barbara, which merged with Casa Esperanza in July 2015, operates an interim housing facility where it provides homeless individuals with services to improve their health, increase their income, and transition to stable housing. PATH has 60 beds in its main program, another 20 beds under contract with Cottage Health for respite care, 24 beds with the Department of Behavioral Wellness, and 10 beds with S.B. Police for its Restorative Policing Program. All of these residents benefit from an array of services designed to move them

into permanent housing, including intensive case management, employment assistance, medical care (an on-site clinic staffed by S.B. County Public Health), mental-health services, and substance-use treatment. From January to May of this year, the main program served 180 clients, while 194 were served under the Cottage contract, 41 under the Behavioral Wellness contract, and seven under the S.B. Police contract. PATH’s comprehensive approach is working. Since the merger, it has moved 300 people into permanent housing. Given PATH’s priority on people who are chronically homeless (along with veterans), this figure is especially impressive. For the main program, admittance requirements are to adhere to PATH’s harm reduction policy and to want to increase one’s income and have housing stability. Occasionally, PATH is at capacity, but usually, nobody is turned away for lack of space. The average stay is three to four months. PATH Santa Barbara also operates a 100-bed inclement-weather Winter Shelter Program, which is independent of the Freedom Warming Centers. The shelter program runs generally from December through March and is activated when the weather is forecast to be below 40 degrees or the forecast calls for two days where the chance of rain is at least 50 percent. From January to May this year, the shelter served 278 unduplicated clients. PATH Santa Barbara receives funding from every level of government, which together makes up 60-70 percent of its budget, necessitating significant fundraising from the private sector. It has many public- and private-sector partners and hundreds of volunteers. Last year, about 500 volunteers assisted staff in various capacities. PATH was formed 34 years ago by a coalition of churches and temples in West Los Angeles. It now operates throughout California with hubs in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, and Santa Barbara.

F

or the past two decades, Giffin & Crane has maintained a steady working relationship with one of Santa Barbara’s finest cabinetmakers. Starbuck Minikin, headed up by Charlie Starbuck (pictured), specializes in custom, one-of-a-kind projects. “I like building something nobody’s ever done before,” Starbuck said. To achieve that, especially for the region’s high-end market and its discerning clientele, Starbuck draws from 40 years of experience. “I bought the shop from Bill Minikin in 1978,” he says. “That’s when my career in cabinetry began. I trained for five years with Bill’s partner, Wes Butler.” Before that, after earning an advanced degree from the University of Colorado, Starbuck worked as an accountant in San Francisco, a job that provided considerable monetary compensation but not much else, he said. So the Santa Barbara native as told to Keith Hamm moved back home to revisit the creative impulses from his younger years, namely woodworking skills he picked up at Laguna Blanca School under the guidance of shop teacher Charles Chester Cash, a retired carpenter. “If Mr. Cash were still alive, I’d take him by the hand and show him my shop and my projects and tell him that this is what he inspired,” Starbuck said. “Woodshop was the only class I got an A in when I was a kid.” Starbuck has fond memories of crafting cutting boards, skim boards, and paddleboards, among other early assignments. “I’ve always been building something since then.” One of his favorite personal pieces—which he built in his college apartment —is a walnut Ping-Pong table with cherrywood inlays. His kids grew up playing on it. Once in the cabinetry business, Starbuck started out refinishing furniture before taking on remodels and new homes, and “as our shop grew and Giffin & Crane grew, our paths crossed,” he says. “It was a normal business eventuality.” “Our longstanding relationship is based on a mutual interest in quality, integrity, and professionalism,” Starbuck said. “And we both know that the most important thing in business is having a happy client.” Over the years, Starbuck, now in his late sixties, has adapted to a changing industry and marketplace, from learning computer-aided design and automation to sourcing specialty hardware and responding to a demand for sustainably harvested hardwoods. His crew operates out of a 4,000-square-foot shop next door to his office in downtown Santa Barbara. “I consider myself an artist, to an extent,” he said. “As an artist, if you’re in it for the money, forget it.You have to love what you do and have the passion to dedicate yourself to making sure clients are happy—and be proud of your work.”

Lutah Maria Riggs, FAIA

T

here has been much written about Lutah Maria Riggs over the years. There is even a short documentary about the first female architect in California to be elevated to the College of Fellows in the American Institute of Architects. You can obtain a copy of the DVD from the Lutah Maria Riggs Society (lutah.org). Riggs came into the world in the usual way, the only child of a doctor and homemaker in 1896 in the town of Toledo, Ohio. She never married or had children herself. Due to circumstances that are not really clear, her father abandoned her and her mother when Riggs was just a toddler. He never returned. This seemed to be a common occurrence for that time — similar events afflicted Frank Lloyd Wright in his early days. She knew she wanted to be an architect — once saying, “I dedicated myself to architecture … It comes first, I come last.” Perhaps this was one of the reasons she never married and was unable to keep business partners for very long. She was strong-minded and knew what she wanted, having little tolerance for those intent on placing roadblocks in her path. After graduating from high school in 1914, Riggs moved to Santa Barbara with her mother and attended Santa Barbara City College until 1917 before transferring to UC Berkeley, where she completed her architectural studies in 1919. She then set out on her quest to live her dream by designing buildings. She had a very difficult time finding work in those days because the profession, like many, was dominated by men — most of whom did not fancy the idea of a woman architect. Interestingly, nor did the wives of these architects. In the early 1920s, Riggs returned to Santa Barbara to care for her ailing mother. Hearing that area architect George Washington Smith was looking for help, she applied. She was given a week to prove herself, and not even given a chair to sit and draw, she stood the entire week. The following week, she was hired and provided with a chair. Riggs was a master illustrator and drafter. She quickly gained increased responsibility in the Smith firm and eventually became a partner with Smith. She and others carried on his practice for a few years after his sudden death in 1930 until the existing projects were completed. Riggs is thus responsible for the drawings and design elements of many of Santa Barbara’s most notable buildings created under the Smith masthead: the Lobero Theatre, the El Paseo complex, and Casa del Herrero, to name just a few. While she did complete a number of commercial projects, clearly her passion was for residential buildings. There are many still present in the community — most very private, so it is difficult to see them. Among some of her notable projects under her own hand are the Santa Barbara Cemetery Chapel and site, the Baron and Baroness Maximilian von Romberg residence, and Wright Ludington’s residence. Ludington was an avid art collector and was responsible for a wing at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Riggs passed in 1984, and a few year prior, the American Institute of Architects Santa Barbara Chapter created the Lutah Maria Riggs award in her honor. She became the first recipient of the award, which is bestowed upon an individual in the community who has made a significant contribution to the built environment or set a high standard in service to the public. A few of the past recipients include Lutah Maria Riggs, FAIA (1979); the Architectural Firm of Edwards and Pitman (1980); Fred Noel, AIA (1982); David Gebhard, HAIA (1986); Jean Graffy (1988); and Brian Cearnal, AIA (2017).
