Olive Mill Road Beauty Rises Again

ife is full of coincidences. On December 4, 2017, my friend Marco stopped by my office with a present for me: a little lucky dog statuette that looked like an uncannily accurate caricature of my dog, Scout. Marco didn’t know that December 4 is my birthday. He just saw the statue, knew I would like it, and got it for me just because. He was right. I love it and keep it on a shelf in my living room. Of course, we also didn’t know that December 4, 2017, was the date that the Thomas Fire would begin. As I was out to dinner with friends that night for my birthday, we all started getting news alerts about a fire in Ventura County. We now know what transpired over the following month, culminating on January 9, 2018, with the Montecito debris flow that stunned our already-raw community, took so many lives, and changed local history forever. People who didn’t know my friend Marco before that event soon did. Like many Montecito residents, Marco woke up that early January morning to a glow in the sky, a deep rumbling noise, and a wall of mud rushing toward his house. But unlike most other victims in the path of the debris flow, Marco recorded the event as it unfolded. The chilling footage of Marco realizing what was happening and yelling to his parents and neighbors to wake up and flee to safety was replayed internationally, and it is one of the only firsthand real-time accounts of the disaster.
Marco Farrell and his dad, Jeff, are a real estate team. It’s fitting that the house for sale that they invited me to visit last week is their first listing since returning to work full-time since the debris flow. The house — at 139 Olive Mill Road in Montecito — is one of the first homes damaged in the disaster to be listed for sale. It’s also fitting because Marco and Jeff have lived in the house next door for almost 40 years. To say that they know the neighborhood well — and what it has been through in the past 16 months — is an understatement. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I pulled up. The house is a skeleton, but it’s the grandest, classiest skeleton I’ve ever seen. Built in 1926, it’s a classic Spanish Colonial Revival–style home, with a white stucco facade, a red tile roof, and wooden windows framed by turquoise shutters. Agave and yuccas dot the front yard, and a hill rises behind the house to surround its two-story silhouette in greenery. Walking through the house felt intimate, like watching a surgery in progress. Local firm Allen Construction was called in to care for the house after it was damaged. They cleared the mud and debris from the property and then removed all of the interior walls on the first floor of the house so that the redwood studs could be properly examined and cleaned. The house’s framework is exposed right now, but its pedigree is still evident. The scale of the living room, with a high timbered ceiling and imposing fireplace, is impressive. Two sets of French doors lead through to the brick patio and large, terraced backyard beyond. With help, I could identify the other rooms downstairs: a formal dining room, kitchen, laundry room, two bathrooms, and two bedrooms, including the master suite. The upstairs layout is much more apparent, because the walls and beautiful hardwood floors are intact. A curved stairway leads
up to three bedrooms and another bathroom. I stood at one of the bedroom windows and looked out over the beautiful patina of the roof tiles to the spot where the garage once stood and admired bright-yellow wildflowers all along the side of the house. Before I left, Marco and I stood in the front yard talking. The house is set back on the lot, with a semicircle driveway reaching out toward the street, holding fruit trees, boulders, and more bright-yellow wildflowers in its center. When I remarked upon the flowers, Marco mentioned that they weren’t there prior to the disaster 16 months ago. Their seeds washed down from the hills and lay dormant until now, only recently surprising the neighbors with their vibrant beauty. I reminded Marco of the timing of his accidental birthday gift to me some 16 months ago. We talked about all that has transpired since then. Life is full of coincidences, and it’s also full of unexpected surprises, like flowers appearing after a disaster. Marco and Jeff are right where they are supposed to be right now, helping to find a new owner for 139 Olive Mill Road, to blend its history with their own future story, complete with great next-door neighbors.

Pacific Pride Foundation Holds Royal Ball
O
n May 4, the Pacific Pride Foundation (PPF) held its extraordinary biennial fundraiser: the Royal Ball. About 400 supporters of the LGBTQ center gathered at the Rosewood Miramar Beach for a wildly entertaining evening. Two years in the making, with prices ranging from $350 for a basic ticket to $50,000 for one of the royal boxes, the event is expected to raise about $300,000. Many guests heeded the invitation’s call to dress in black tie or “your most regal silver, gold or glimmering attire,” with tuxes and gowns abounding, and plenty of bling, royal robes, crowns, and tiaras. Guests mingled on the Grand Lawn overlooking the ocean and in the Chandelier Ballroom and its foyer, patios, and lawn. On one side of the exquisitely decorated silver ballroom, toplevel sponsors entertained in elegantly appointed royal boxes, replete with sofas and armchairs, while other VIPs relaxed at premier dining tables with stunning floral and candle arrangements — all the work of Merryl Brown Events. Instead of the traditional sit-down dinner, long speeches, and auction, the event featured dining at one’s leisure from buffet stations throughout the evening, a short program, lots of mingling and dancing, and an incredible floor show. During the program, Executive Director Colette Schabram shared how PPF reaches more than 10,000 people annually with its youth leadership development programs, advocacy for seniors, work on hate crimes, and HIV education and prevention. Each year, PPF serves more than 100 families, couples, and individuals in therapy, tests 1,200 people for HIV, distributes 5,000 safe-sex kits, supports 250 youth, and trains 1,500 people on LGBTQ best practices. PPF’s programs, Schabram emphasized, save lives and heal families. She cautioned that LGBTQ people remain targeted minorities and that the battle for equality is far from won — pointing to last week’s release by the Department of Health and Human Services of a new regulation allowing health-care provid-
ers to opt out of medical care based on religious beliefs. To drive home the needs of LGBTQ youth, Schabram cited alarming statistics: 30 percent of lesbian, gay, and bisexual teenagers will attempt suicide this year alone, and half of all transgender teenagers will attempt suicide before the age of 20. She concluded by declaring that PPF will remain on the frontlines locally to increase safety for the LGBTQ community. Luis Oviedo, who participated in PPF’s PROUD Youth Program 10 years ago, and his brother, Emilio Villafranco, a current program member, shared, in a moving and articulate manner, the difficulties they have encountered because of their sexual orientations and their immense gratitude for the support they received from PPF. A wildly entertaining floor show followed, with the four-man singing group Boy Band performing Culture Club, Queen, and Elton John hits and a plethora of scantily attired Elan Artists dancers performing on stage and on the dance floor. Music spun by DJ Ash kept guests dancing into the night. A major component of the PROUD Youth Program is its PROUD Youth Groups, which are therapeutic social support groups for youth ages 12-17 meeting weekly in Santa Barbara and monthly in Santa Maria. On average, about a dozen youth attend in each location. Another key component is its (90) Days of Summer Program — a life-skills-building program for youth ages 12-17. Separate programs run weekly in North and South County focused on a specific facet of LGBTQ advocacy and leadership development. PPF has been serving Santa Barbara County for 42 years and has long had offices in both Santa Barbara and Santa Maria but last year moved to a new location in each city. This year, counseling services were added to the Santa Maria location.

Those who are leaving California are mostly middle class and almost entirely comprised of people who make less than $100,000. In 2017, the minimum income required to buy a median-priced home in California was $110,890, while the annual mean wage for a variety of professions, including Registered Nurse ($102,700), Police and Sheriff’s Patrol Officer ($93,550),
Elementary School Teacher ($77,990), and Firefighter ($73,860) was well below that minimum. Outmigration is even more problematic in areas that have poor affordability, most notably the Bay Area. In San Francisco the minimum income required to buy a median-priced home reached $290,630 in 2017, while the income of those same professions did not even reach half the income requirement.

utmigration continues to be a big concern for the California housing market. Caused by the state’s housing affordability issue, outmigration has resulted in about 800,000 people leaving California since 2010. As of the fourth quarter of 2018, only 28 percent of California households could afford to purchase the medianpriced home. While this number is up from 27 percent in the third quarter of 2018, it is down from 29 percent one year ago. The high cost of housing is forcing Californians out of their current county or out of the state entirely.
