had strong pangs of déjà vu driving up Highway 154 last week. My son John and his bride, Natalie, got married in a magical weekend-long celebration at Lake Cachuma last month, using one of Cachuma’s lakeside group campsites, so that their friends from across the country could camp out, catch up, and enjoy each other and the occasion. As the mother of the groom, that meant driving up and over the pass quite a few times that wedding weekend, which I didn’t mind one bit. In fact, every drive to the wedding site felt like a wellchoregraphed scene in a musical. Each time I left Santa Barbara, the sky would be cloaked in a drizzly gray blanket of fog, but at a particular point on the pass, as if on cue, the clouds would part, the sky would turn blue, and the sun would shine. I considered it a sign of good luck for the bride and groom. Last week, I drove the same route to visit a house for sale at 282 Rosario Park Road. At my appointed turnoff to Stagecoach Road, the clouds performed their same well-rehearsed parting, making way for blue skies and sunshine. I soon learned that a different kind of love story awaited me. Rosario Park Road is an enchanted setting: a private community of 20 homes on a quiet mountain road surrounded by a tranquil backdrop of tall, mature trees and lush green hillsides. It feels like Big Sur, yet the neighborhood is within walking distance of Cold Springs Tavern,
and it is just a short drive down the hill to Santa Barbara. Also known by the locals as “Cabin 12,” 282 Rosario Park Road is a two-bedroom, one-bath home built in 1945, with just under 700 square feet of living space. I was fortunate to be shown around the property by the owner himself. It soon became obvious that he knows and loves every inch of the house. Jason and his wife, Katie, bought the house in 2015. In the years since, the arrival of their two daughters, two years apart, has made the house feel a little too cozy for them, but no less cherished. Jason toured me around and pointed out improvements he has made inside and out: from new windows to a new heating system and brand-new fence around the yard. He told me about the community, which has its own water district with a private community well. I barely refrained from asking, “Are you sure you want to leave?” The house is adorable, and the setting is magical. I imagine that growing up here would be an enchanting experience, with all the lessons that nature can teach. Built into the hillside, the house is, in essence, two stories, with the main living area on the top floor. A large front patio, with a lovely hilltop view, leads to the front door, which opens onto the living room. Large and bright, with an inviting brick fireplace against one wall, this main room also offers a view alcove perfect for a window seat or reading nook. The two bedrooms are on either side of the living room, with the bathroom just inside the larger of the two. The master bedroom also has a wall of windows overlooking the front of the house, with a treetop view that must be mesmerizing year-round, watching nature’s changing display throughout the seasons. The kitchen is along the back of the house and has been completely remodeled with quartz countertops, recessed lighting, and newer appliances. A back door opens onto another deck with a different view, plus
another staircase downstairs, providing good traffic flow in and around the house and yard. Down below, a large, unfinished “man cave” provides an excellent storage or workroom space. Another finished room with a separate entrance is currently being used as the laundry room, but it’s big enough to be a guest room. A large patio on this lower level with a built-in barbecue pit is the perfect outdoor entertaining space. The front yard is large and flat, with a chicken coop, fruit trees, a big area outfitted with chairs and a fire pit, and a terraced vegetable garden on one side. Two girls rode by on horses and called hello to Jason. We walked down the road to the edge of the property to check out the newly rebuilt garage and to enjoy the house from a different viewpoint. Just about everything that I remarked upon, from the beautiful flowering bushes out front to the fenced garbage area, was Jason’s handiwork. As I was saying goodbye, a neighbor drove up the street and paused to chat. Everyone knows everyone on Rosario Park Road. When Jason introduced me, the neighbor jokingly asked me not to tell too many people about their special community. This mountain enclave, only minutes from town, offers solitude, tranquility, and friendly living unlike anywhere else. As I drove back down the pass, tendrils of fog curled around me like a dream sequence in a movie, willing me to forget that magical Rosario Park Road ever existed. But it was an experience I wouldn’t soon forget.

Arts & Lectures Donors Dine with Fareed Zakaria

n May 13, UCSB Arts & Lectures hosted an intimate, elegant, and fascinating 60th Anniversary Party and fundraiser with Fareed Zakaria. Sara Miller McCune generously opened her Montecito estate, and she and her Sage Publishing underwrote all expenses. Proceeds from the $2,500 tickets go to Arts & Lectures’ (A&L) extensive education and community outreach programs. The evening began with the 60 donors and Zakaria mingling on the terrace and lawn while members of UCSB Jazz Ensemble with Dr. Jon Nathan provided background music. A tasty three-course meal served on the terrace followed, with guests seated at tables named for some of A&L’s special stars and adorned with framed photos of the stars with guests at the table. At my Scott Kelly table, supporter Sheila Wald was greeted with a photo of her and Jeff Goldblum. During dessert, Miller McCune Executive Director Celesta Billeci ran a fun trivia contest, including how old Yo-Yo Ma was when he first performed for A&L (22) and what eminent historian stated “Arts & Lectures is a stunning example of the great good that generous citizens working together can accomplish with their community” (David McCullough). Guests then adjourned to the living room for a talk and Q&A with Zakaria. Billeci reminded guests of A&L’s mission to educate, entertain, and inspire, and that its education program is about access for all. Zakaria, who hosts Fareed Zakaria GPS on CNN and is a columnist for the Washington Post, gave a fascinating, wide-ranging talk that delved into such issues as why the pollsters got the 2016 election wrong, how Trump got elected and the wide-ranging implications of this for American society, and the rise of nationalist movements throughout the world and how technology and globalization will only exacerbate them. Zakaria described Trump as a great salesman who told voters what they wanted to hear, which was a nationalist message — their problems were caused by China, Mexico, and Muslims. Zakaria explained how this nationalism has spread to many countries throughout the world, yet it has not taken hold in Japan because there is little immigration in that country. In this country, he observed that the strongest anti-immigrant furor is where there is the least immigration, in rural America, while in urban centers with major immigrant populations, there isn’t the back-
lash in part because there is familiarity with immigrants. He closed on a positive note — that the younger generation is resisting the nationalist ideology, which offers some hope. The Host Committee for the event was Annette Caleel, Meg Burnham, Monica Babich, Maxine Prisyon, Heather Sturgess, Anne Towbes, and Sherry Villanueva. Major donors are critical to Arts & Lectures as ticket sales and support from UCSB cover less than half of A&L’s costs. Contributions help fund A&L’s extensive education and community outreach Bridget Yin with A&L Council Member Lynda Weinman programs. About half of all visiting artists and lecturers engage in some form of outreach or educational activity. Through A&L’s novel Arts Adventure Program, area children are transported to The Granada Theatre for engaging programs, which have included astronaut Scott Kelly, Dorrance Dance, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and National Geographic photographer Bertie Gregory. After some of the performances, students go to UCSB for lunch, tours, and STEM activities. he Santa Barbara REALTORS® Protecting Homeowners Campaign gathered over 11,000 signatures in order to place the Homeowners Fairness Initiative on the City of Santa Barbara’s ballot this November. This initiative will repeal Zoning Information Reports (ZIRs), which are required for most property sales in the City of Santa Barbara.

In 2015, the Santa Barbara County Grand Jury investigated ZIRs and deemed that “while ZIRs had an important role to play in preserving neighborhoods from overcrowding, time has caught up with them and they no longer hold the relevance they once had.”
On May 9, 2019, the Santa Barbara REALTORS® Protecting Homeowners Campaign submitted to the City of Santa Barbara Clerk more than the required 110% of qualified signatures. Once the city clerk verifies the signatures by a random sample, the city council will have the opportunity to adopt the initiative as law or place it on the ballot. “We need to protect Santa Barbara homeowners from this outdated and unnecessary city ordinance that requires sellers to pay hundreds of dollars to have a zoning inspector come to their home to look for violations,” Schultheis said. “As Realtors, we are the only organization protecting homeowners from unreasonable laws that undermine the rights of home ownership. Hardscaping includes paths, patios, walls, retaining walls, and fencing—all the elements built in the landscape that are not plants. When considering flat work such as paths and patios, it is important to think about percolation. Materials like gravel, unmortared flagstone, and pavers keep precious water out of storm drains and allow it to be absorbed into the soil. It is important to be aware of the ecological implications of the materials one uses in hardscaping. Local
materials, as well as repurposed materials, make great options. Once one understands plants, water, soil, and hardscape, the work of putting it all together to create a practical and aesthetically pleasing landscape begins. Consider the ways the garden will be used and the constraints that may exist on the property. Will the landscape be for children, or for hosting large parties? Is privacy needed? Are there views to be accentuated or downplayed? Finally, one’s landscape style should ideally blend with the architecture of existing structures to create a beautiful space that is beneficial to human, plant, and anin mal life.

In California, landscaping accounts for 50 percent of domestic water use. Efficiently irrigated properties save a lot of water and still provide beautiful settings. Rainwater can be stored in the soil for months if it is directed from roof gutters to the garden, and when plants with low water needs are used in conjunction with rainwater kept on-site, it is possible to get by without any added irrigation. If irrigation is required, then system efficiency must be maximized. Drip lines and multi-trajectory rotating spray heads reduce runoff and water loss from evaporation, and learning to properly program one’s system allows optimal water run times for changing seasons and weather conditions. Healthy soil, rich in biodiversity, is the backbone of a landscape. Whether sand, silt, or clay, the greater the biodiversity in one’s soil, the better one’s plants will perform. Pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers all reduce the biota in soil, whereas compost, composted manures, and worm castings all increase biodiversity. Mulch helps create and maintain healthy soil. Carbon-based mulches such as wood chips, leaf litter, and straw serve as food to the soil biota and also retain water and reduce weeds. Having biodiverse soil and using mulch is one of the primary ways that

California native plants, as well as edible plants, are great landscape choices because their adaptation to the regions of the state makes them resilient, and they require fewer inputs such as water, fertilizers, and pesticides than other plants typically do. California native plants also provide a habitat for native birds and insects. Edible and productive landscaping includes growing vegetables, herbs, flowers for cutting and more.
