I

’ve got a thing for front doors. I know I’m not the only one because there are coffee table books, jigsaw puzzles, and Instagram posts galore all focused on front doors. As the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression, and a front door provides the first impression to every home. The adorable house at 2412 Chapala Street somehow rises above that wisdom because it has two front doors, and both of them provide a distinctive impression. The home sits behind a tall hedge on upper Chapala Street, one block off State Street and just two blocks from the bustling shopping and restaurant scene on upper De la Vina. Passing through the hedge on a recent sunny afternoon, I found the house itself surrounded by a low stone wall. A flagstone walkway leads through an iron entry gate and up a short set of stone stairs to a recessed front porch flanked by two sharply peaked roofs. The sage-green Tudor façade is offset by original white wood trim and bursts of color from the drought-tolerant front garden. Straight ahead, a cardinal-red Dutch door leads into the dining room, while on the left, a matching solid door opens into the living room. Both display distinctive period hardware that hints at the delightful details inside the house. Stepping into the living room, one of the most striking fireplaces I’ve ever seen greets me straight ahead. Decorative edging curls around the grate, while a white surround and mantel host a curved niche above. The lines angle subtly upward, contrasting with the curved ceilings of the room. Period light fixtures on either side of the fireplace reiterate the home’s art deco pedigree. The planks of the home’s hardwood floors are set in a concentric pattern, showing off the grain and beauty. The dining room lies beyond the living room, with builtin cabinetry and wall alcoves offering both style and function. From the dining room, a hallway leads back to the bedrooms, and the kitchen is straight ahead, through an arched doorway. In front of the kitchen, a huge bay window graces an extra room that looks out over the front yard. This small space would be a perfect breakfast nook or charming office. The kitchen itself is long and bright, with white wooden

cabinets and a row of windows. The kitchen leads into a laundry room, with extra storage and a handy exterior side door. All three bedrooms are spacious, and both full baths have colorful original tile and light fixtures. Two of the three bedrooms have French doors onto the backyard, and stepping into either room, I found it hard not to gravitate outside. After admiring the view from the flagstone porch, I have to step down and explore every corner. The large yard consists of several distinct spaces, all lushly landscaped. A grassy lawn is bordered by a wall with a mural on one side and completely fenced all around. A back area boasts fruit trees and plenty of garden space. Closest to the house, a terraced lounge space is graced with boulders and a fountain. Wisteria covers a redwood pergola that shades a built-in tiled barbecue and perfect entertaining zone. The finished two-car garage has a huge back window and French doors that open onto the patio. The long paver driveway offers plenty of space for parking, making the garage a prime option for a future recreation room, man cave, or she shed. Walking back through the house, I kept noticing captivating details. The windows have original hardware, with both cranks and latches to open the panes and screens, a style that I’m told was invented by famed builder Alex D’Alfonso. Similar vintage details too numerous to mention are found throughout this charming house. As I started to take my leave, the door knocker on one

of the front doors caught my eye. Its inescapably art deco chevron pattern echoed many of the decorative features I’d seen throughout this charming house. I knew that this door — and the entire home — would leave a lasting impression.

n June 4, about 650 people gathered for the South Coast Business & Technology Awards, which celebrate South Coast innovators and raise funds for the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara. With leaders from every segment of the business community present, along with many government and nonprofit leaders, this is the premier networking event of the year. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the event began with an extended reception in the Plaza del Sol at the Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. Guests were then welcomed in the Grand Ballroom by Event Co-chairs Arnold Brier, Yardi Systems VP and general counsel, and Renee Grubb, Village Properties founder. Scholarship Foundation Board Chair Don Logan remarked on how the awards program has partnered with the Scholarship Foundation since 2001 and generated more than $2 million in scholarships for Santa Barbara County students. In emphasizing the deserving nature of these students, he noted that this year the recipients have an average GPA of 3.91 and 52 percent of them are first-generation college students. A recent recipient, Juliet Ho, shared her gratitude. The Excellence in Service Award went to CALM, whose programs prevent and treat childhood trauma in our county. CALM serves families and caregivers directly and through partnerships with myriad entities. Montecito Bank & Trust Chair and CEO Janet Garufis presented the award, expressing her sincere gratitude for CALM’s invaluable work serving thousands of families each year. CALM CEO Alana Walczak shared how the award’s name, Excellence in Service, embodies what CALM aims to do every day in support of the most vulnerable children and families in the community through cutting-edge trauma prevention and treatment services. The Entrepreneur of the Year Award went to Kevin O’Connor, who was the founder, while still in college, of Intercomputer Communications Corp (acquired by DCA), cofounder and CEO of DoubleClick (acquired by Google), and founder and CEO of Graphiq (acquired by Amazon). Among the companies he has provided venture capital to are Procore, Surfline, HG Data, and MeetUp. With his son Cormac, he recently started ScOp Venture Capital, which focuses on technology companies

with scalable opportunities. The Company of the Year Award went to Procore Technologies, a leading provider of cloud-based applications for the construction industry. Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Carpinteria, the company now has 1,400 employees and 12 offices. Last year, more than 140,000 construction projects were completed using its software. The Executive of the Year Award went to American Riviera Bank President and CEO Jeff DeVine. Since he took the helm in 2008, the bank has grown from one branch and less than $100 million in assets to five branches and more than $600 million. DeVine was responsible for the 2016 merger with The Bank of Santa Barbara. The Pioneer Award went to Reicker, Pfau, Pyle & McRoy founding partner Mike Pfau, who provides legal services for the general business, real estate, securities, tax, and financing needs of his clients. He served on the board and as president of the UCSB Economic Forecast Project, on the board of three banks, and as a founding boardmember and president of the S.B. Chamber of Commerce. He has also served on the boards and/or as president of myriad other nonprofits. A new category was introduced this year: the Rising Stars Awards, which honor young companies on the cusp of success. Recipients were Apeel Sciences, Next Energy Technologies, and ParentSquare. This year’s event grossed about $300,000. The net proceeds will go to students pursuing degrees in business and technology-related fields. An all-volunteer Steering Committee selected the honorees. The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara is the largest community-based scholarship organization in the nation, having awarded $115 million over the past 57 years. This year, it awarded nearly $8 million in college and vocational scholarships to about 2,600 students throughout the county. But more often than not, they work with Griffin & Crane to draw from Santa Barbara’s incredible pool of creative talent. Both parties benefit — artisans get to apply and hone their skills on challenging projects, and the

homeowners receive a custom product that can be found nowhere else on Earth. About 10 years ago, for instance, Giffin & Crane had the pleasure of working with a newly married couple relocating to Santa Barbara from the Midwest. They purchased a Montecito home with a classic craftsman design highlighted with hacienda stylings (pictured). The home’s roomy layout offered plenty of space for the owners’ extensive art and furniture collection, but its age — about 70 years old — was starting to show, especially on its original sandstone foundation and structural beamwork, much of which had been poorly fastened to begin with. In California’s earthquake country, that’s an issue. Stabilizing the building — with engineer Thom Hume running point — was just the first round of a comprehensive remodel. Once that was complete, Griffin & Crane opened the front door to a group of Santa Barbara artisans, including but not limited to welder Gerry Endeman of Elephant Iron, cabinet maker Charlie Starbuck of Starbuck Minikin, bronze and metalworker Phil Brainard, glass artist Brian McNally, and
